1. Metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions of iron(II) cage complexes: New furyl-containing macrobicyclic scaffold, a reactive halogenoclathrochelate precursor and its ribbed-functionalized derivatives

Abstract

Condensation of α-furyldioxime with the macrocyclic iron(II) bis-α-benzyldioximate gave the 2-furyl-containing iron(II) clathrochelate with non-equivalent aromatic chelate fragments. The selective bromination of its furyl ribbed substituents with N-bromosuccinimide afforded the dibromoclathrochelate precursor, Suzuki–Miyaura and Sonogashira reactions of which with 4-carboxyphenylboronic acid and trimethylsilylacetylene in the presence of a generated in situ palladium-containing catalyst gave the target ribbed-functionalized cage complexes with inherent aromatic substituents; aromatic nucleophilic substitution of this precursor with a derivative of piperazine led to the corresponding monofunctionalized iron(II) monobromoclathrochelate. The diamagnetic low-spin iron(II) complexes obtained were characterized using elemental analysis, MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, IR, UV–vis, 1H, 11B, 13C and 19F{1H} NMR spectroscopies, and by X-ray diffraction. The FeN6-coordination polyhedra of X-rayed molecules of clathrochelate scaffold, dibromomacrobicyclic precursor and monofunctionalized iron(II) monobromoclathrochelate possess a similar distorted trigonal prismatic–trigonal antiprismatic geometry with the distortion angles φ of approximately 26°; their heights h and the bite angles α are approximately 2.31 A and 39.0°. So, metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions of a dibromine derivative of the new furyl-containing tris-dioximate iron(II) clathrochelate have been successfully used, for the first time, for the synthesis of ribbed-functionalized cage complexes with inherent functionalized aromatic substituent(s). This expands our ability to create clathrochelate complexes of different structures, symmetries and functionalities that meet criteria for practical use as transcription inhibitors, DNA intercalators as well as versatile entities for molecular (photo)electronic devices; the monofunctionalized iron(II) cage complex seems to be a suitable bromoclathrochelate precursor for further functionalization via metal-catalyzed reactions.

Abstract

Perfluoroalkylation of an iron(II) diiodoclathrochelate precursor with trifluoromethyltrimethylsilane and copper(I) iodide in THF using 2,5-dithiahexane as a co-ligand and potassium fluoride as the base afforded mono- and bis-trifluoromethylated cage complexes in moderate yields. These complexes were characterized using elemental analysis, MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, IR, UV–Vis, 1 H, 11 B, 19 F and 13 C{ 1 H} NMR spectroscopies, and by X-ray crystallography. The geometry of their FeN 6 -coordination polyhedra is intermediate between a trigonal prism and a trigonal antiprism, the encapsulated iron(II) ions are located almost in the center of these polyhedra. The average Fe–N distances (av. 1.91 A), the distortion φ angles (approximately 26°) and the heights h of the coordination polyhedra (2.31 A) are characteristic of the boron-capped iron(II) clathrochelates. The anodic ranges of the cyclic voltammograms for the trifluoromethylated iron(II) clathrochelates contain one-electron waves of an irreversible oxidation assigned to the metal-centered redox process Fe 2 +/3 + , while those in their cathodic ranges were assigned to the Fe 2 +/+ reduction. The ribbed functionalization of the iron clathrochelates with trifluoromethyl substituent(s) destabilizes both their oxidized and reduced forms.

Abstract

The halogen exchange reaction of the macrobicyclic iron(II) complex FeBd2(Cl2Gm)(BF)2 (where Bd2– and Cl2Gm2– are α-benzyldioxime and dichloroglyoxime dianions, respectively) with two-fold excess of CuI and stoichiometric amounts of NaI in NMP gave the mixture of initial compound with diiodo- and iodochloroclathrochelates as well as the small amounts of the cage by-products of side hydrodehalogenation and homo-coupling reactions of this precursor. The chromatographically isolated complex FeBd2(IGmCl)(BF)2 has been characterized using elemental analysis, MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, IR, UV–vis, 1H and 13C{1H} NMR spectroscopies, and X-ray diffraction crystallography. This clathrochelate possess a geometry intermediate between that of a trigonal prism and a trigonal antiprism (the distortion angle φ = 23.6°). The Fe–N distances vary in a narrow range (1.91–1.92 A), the height h of the FeN6-coordination polyhedron and the averaged bite angle α are equal to 2.34 A and 39.2°, respectively. The reaction studied occurs only in the case of the vic-dihalogenosubstituted macrobicycles with CuI as both the catalyst and the reagent, and with iodide anions coordinated to the copper(I) ions. The proposed mechanism of this reaction is similar to that for copper-catalyzed Finkelstein-type reactions of aryl halides and the intermediate anion-radical species are effectively generated with CuI–N-methylpyrrolidone complex.

4. The effect of the melt-spinning processing parameters on the rate of cooling

Abstract

The effect of the melt-spinning processing variables such as wheel speed, gas ejection pressure and melt temperature on cooling rates measured by a thermoelectric technique has been investigated. It is found that cooling rates during melt spinning of Fe40Ni40P14B6 ribbons increase in the range 4×104–6.9×106 K s−1 while ribbon thickness decreases from 92 to 18 μm with increasing wheel speed from 9 to 30.5 m s−1. The resultant strong dependence of the rate of cooling on ribbon thickness (in this case T ∝d −3.1 ) is obtained. Cooling rates and ribbon thickness are found to increase with increasing ejection pressure and to decrease as melt superheat grows. As a result of improving thermal contact at the wheel–ribbon interface with increasing gas ejection pressure, the cooling rates of melt-spun ribbons tend to increase with their thickness.

Abstract

Structural evidence for the existence of a ‘vinylogous’ anomeric effect is presented for a series of 4H-4-benzotriazolyl-2,6-diarylpyrans 1a,b and for their benzo-fused derivatives 2–5 and nitrogen analogue 6. X-Ray crystal structure analyses reveal changes in the geometry of the central ring and exocyclic C–N bond, which are discussed in terms of an interaction of the benzotriazole fragment with a heteroatom through four bonds.

Abstract

We have studied J ψ production in p p collisions at s = 1.8 TeV with the DO detector at Fermilab using μ+μ− data. We have measured the inclusive J ψ production cross section as a function of J ψ transverse momentum, pT. For the kinematic range pT > 8 GeV/c and |η| σ(p p → J ψ + X) · Br ( J ψ → μ + μ − ) = 2.08 ± 0.17( stat) ± 0.46(syst) nb. Using the muon impact parameter we have estimated the fraction of J ψ mesons coming from B meson decays to be fb = 0.35 ± 0.09(stat)±0.10(syst) and inferred the inclusive b production cross section. From the information on the event topology the fraction of nonisolated J ψ events has been measured to be fnonisol = 0.64 ± 0.08(stat)±0.06(syst). We have also obtained the fraction of J ψ events resulting from radiative decays of χc states, fχ = 0.32 ± 0.07(stat)±0.07(syst). We discuss the implications of our measurements for charmonium production processes.

Abstract

The distribution of the transverse energy in jets has been measured in p p collisions at s =1.8 TeV TeV using the DO detector at Fermilab. This measurement of the jet shape is made as a function of jet transverse energy in both the central and forward rapidity regions. Jets are shown to narrow both with increasing transverse energy and with increasing rapidity. Next-to-leading order partonic QCD calculations are compared to the data. Although the calculations qualitatively describe the data, they are shown to be very dependent on renormalization scale, parton clustering algorithm, and jet direction definition and they fail to describe the data in all regions consistently.

Abstract

A search for a heavy charged gauge boson, W′, using the decay channels W′ → eν and W′ → τν → eνν ν is reported. The data used in the analysis were collected by the DO experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron during the 1992-93 p p collider run from an integrated luminosity of 13.9 ± 0.8 pb−1 at s =1.8 TeV . Assuming that the neutrino from W′ decay is stable and has a mass significantly less than mW′, an upper limit at the 95% confidence level is set on the cross section times branching ratio for p p → W′ → eν . A W′ with the same couplings to quarks and leptons as the standard model W boson is excluded for mW′

Abstract

The DO experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider is currently studying proton-antiproton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.8 TeV. The data-acquisition system for the experiment was designed with two independent pathways for communication between the front-end computers, which interface with the detector electronics, and the host-level computers, where the event data is logged and where the experiment is monitored and controlled. The event data path employs multiple, high-bandwidth, unidirectional busses while the control path, which uses standard local area network components, handles all control, configuration setting, alarm, and monitoring communications. This paper discusses the software components associated with the control communication path, with emphasis upon the design philosophy, user interface, database, and networking issues.

Abstract

From sequence comparisons between the tobamovirus genomes an open reading frame (ORF-X) potentially encoding a small, positively charged protein (33- to 45-amino-acids long) was found to overlap the immediate 3′ and 5′ sides of the transport protein gene and coat protein gene, respectively. In vitro translation of the monocistronic artificial transcripts generated with T7 RNA polymerase yielded a protein of M r 4000 (p4) and an unexpected trypsin-sensitive complex of M r 54000 that was resistant to reduction with 2-mercaptoethanol but could be dissociated by 8 M urea. Assembly of this complex was inhibited completely by site-directed mutagenesis within a conserved, positively charged 5-amino-acid long segment of the ORF-X protein. After centrifugation in low salt buffer the 54-kDa complex remained mostly associated with ribosomes. Apparently this complex represents a specific aggregate of the p4 product of ORF-X with a protein of approximate M r 50000 that is a component of the translation apparatus.

Abstract

The energy differences Δϵ of the n-orbitals n+ and n− (HOMO and HOMO-1) in the tricyclic and bicyclic diaziridines 1, 2, 5 and 6 have been determined by photoelectron spectroscopy and AM1 calculations. It has been found that Δϵ is determined mainly by the pyramidality of the nitrogen atoms. Although the interactions with the Walsh orbital ωA are considerable, they are of minor importance for the MO separation.

Abstract

Amination of 2-methoxycarbonyl-3-chloro-1-pyrroline 1 with H2NOSO3H occurs predominantly from the anti side with respect to chlorine to afford the bicyclic diaziridine 2 with axial orientation of the 4-chloro substituent. Chlorination of 2 takes place exclusively in the 6-endo position to give 3a. 4,6-Dichlorodiaziridine is transformed from chair 3a into boat 3b as a result of endo-exo isomerization.
