Conifers ,Mass resin production ,Resin ,Cretaceous ,Amber - Abstract
Amber is fossilized resin that preserves biological remains in exceptional detail, study of which has revolutionized understanding of past terrestrial organisms and habitats from the Early Cretaceous to the present day. Cretaceous amber outcrops are more abundant in the Northern Hemisphere and during an interval of about 54 million years, from the Barremian to the Campanian. The extensive resin production that generated this remarkable amber record may be attributed to the biology of coniferous resin producers, the growth of resiniferous forests in proximity to transitional sedimentary environments, and the dynamics of climate during the Cretaceous. Here we discuss the set of interrelated abiotic and biotic factors potentially involved in resin production during that time. We name this period of mass resin production by conifers during the late Mesozoic, fundamental as an archive of terrestrial life, the `Cretaceous Resinous Interval (CREI)., This work was supported by the Spanish Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades [research agreement CRE CGL2017-84419 AEI/FEDER, UE] and by the Consejería de Industria, Turismo, Innovación, Transporte y Comercio of the Gobierno de Cantabria through the public enterprise EL SOPLAO S.L. Introduction Information on experience/management of severe hypoglycaemic events (SHEs) among people with insulin-treated diabetes (PWD) and caregivers (CGs) providing care to PWD was sought. Materials and methods An online cross-sectional survey was conducted in eight countries. Inclusion criteria: PWD (aged ≥ 18 years; self-reported type 1 [T1D] or insulin-treated type 2 [T2D] diabetes; experienced ≥1 SHE [hypoglycaemia requiring external assistance] in past 3 years); CGs (layperson aged ≥18 years; caring for PWD meeting all criteria above except age [≥4 years]). This descriptive analysis provides data from Spain. SHE-associated data relate to the most recent SHE. Results Across all groups (T1D PWD, n = 106; T2D PWD, n = 88, T1D CG, n = 87; T2D CG, n = 96), 76–89% reported that the SHE occurred at home; most common cause was eating less than planned (38–53%). Most usual action during the SHE was to intake carbohydrates (67–84%); glucagon use was low (9–36%). Discussion of the SHE with their healthcare provider (HCP) was reported by 70–75% of PWD. During the SHE, 35–69% of PWD/CGs reported feeling scared, unprepared and/or helpless. Conclusions Most SHEs occurred outside the healthcare setting; treatment therefore depends greatly on CGs. SHEs have a negative emotional impact on PWD/CGs, underscoring the need for HCPs to discuss SHEs with PWD/CGs, and to provide tools and strategies to prevent and effectively manage SHEs.

This work aims at testing the suitability of waste wood as feedstock in an industrial combustion unit. Firstly, an extensive characterization of properties relevant for combustion was performed on two samples of waste wood and one sample of natural wood for comparison. Both waste wood samples were found to contain significantly higher amounts of metals such as iron and titanium than natural wood. However, one sample was much richer than the other one in all types of impurities, which resulted in a particularly high amount of ash (about 10 w %), and the sample was also found to contain many fine particles. These observations seemed to be explained by an external pollution of the sample by soil. Then, experiments were carried out in a bench-scale fixed-bed combustion unit on the different samples under variable conditions of air flow. All samples could be successfully burnt. However, the waste wood sample polluted with soil appeared to have a lower conversion rate due to its heterogeneity of particle size. A separation between fines and the rest of the sample seemed to solve this issue. Regarding gas emissions, as expected, both waste wood samples gave rise to higher amounts of NOx emissions than natural wood due to their content.

International audience; Aminoxyl radicals (nitroxides) are a class of compounds with important biomedical applications, serving as antioxidants, spin labels for proteins, spin probes of oximetry, pH, or redox status in electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), or as contrast agents in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). However, the fast reduction of the radical moiety in common tetramethyl-substituted cyclic nitroxides within cells, yielding diamagnetic hydro-xylamines, limits their use in spectroscopic and imaging studies. In vivo half-lives of commonly used tetra-methyl-substituted nitroxides span no more than a few minutes. Therefore, synthetic efforts have focused on enhancing the nitroxide stability towards reduction by varying the electronic and steric environment of the radical. Tetraethyl-substitution at alpha position to the aminoxyl function proved efficient in vitro against reduction by ascorbate or cytosolic extracts. Moreover, 2,2,6,6-tetraethyl-4-oxo(piperidin-1-yloxyl) radical (TEEPONE) was used successfully for tridimensional EPR and MRI in vivo imaging of mouse head, with a reported half-life of over 80 min. We decided to investigate the stability of tetraethyl-substituted piperidine nitroxides in the presence of hepatic microsomal fractions, since no detailed study of their "metabolic stability" at the molecular level had been reported despite examples of the use of these nitroxides in vivo. In this context, the rapid aerobic transformation of TEEPONE observed in the presence of rat liver microsomal fractions and NADPH was unexpected. Combining EPR, HPLC-HRMS, and DFT studies on a series of piperidine nitroxides-TEEPONE, 4-oxo-2,2,6,6-tetramethyl(piperidin-1-yloxyl) (TEMPONE), and 2,2,6,6-tetraethyl-4-hydroxy(piper-idin-1-yloxyl) (TEEPOL), we propose that the rapid loss in paramagnetic character of TEEPONE is not due to reduction to hydroxylamine but is a consequence of carbon backbone modification initiated by hydrogen radical abstraction in alpha position to the carbonyl by the P450-Fe (V) =O species. Besides, hydrogen radical abstraction by P450 on ethyl substituents, leading to dehydrogenation or hydroxylation products, leaves the aminoxyl function intact but could alter the linewidth of the EPR signal and thus interfere with methods relying on measurement of this parameter (EPR oximetry).

Summary Background Standardization of aortic valve repair by the external ring annuloplasty approach is an alternative to valve replacement to avoid prosthetic valve-related events. Although the benefit of exercise training to improve postoperative exercise tolerance has been demonstrated in many conditions after cardiac surgery, it has never been described after aortic valve repair. Objectives To evaluate the feasibility of an early exercise training programme after aortic valve repair. Methods Consecutive patients were prospectively included in 13 postoperative centres. Patients underwent an exercise training programme for approximately 3–5 weeks. Transthoracic echocardiography and a cardiopulmonary exercise test were performed before and after the exercise training programme. Results Fifty patients (mean ± standard deviation [SD] age: 50 ± 13 years) were included a mean of 13.6 ± 12.0 days after aortic valve repair. The preoperative degree of aortic insufficiency was moderate to severe in 35 patients (70%) and the aortic valve was bicuspid in 24 patients (48%). Valve-sparing root replacement and isolated aortic valve repair (including 10% supracoronary aorta replacement) were performed in 64% and 36% of patients, respectively. We found no aortic insufficiency occurrence or worsening and no adverse clinical events after the exercise training programme. Mean left ventricular ejection fraction increased significantly (from 54% ± 8% to 57% ± 9%; P = 0.0007). Mean peak oxygen consumption and first ventilatory threshold increased from 17.0 ± 5.3 to 22.5 ± 7.8 mL/kg/min (32% increase) and from 12.0 ± 3.9 to 14.3 ± 5.2 mL/kg/min (19% increase), respectively (both P Conclusion Exercise training early after aortic valve repair is safe and seems to significantly improve exercise capacity.

In France, clinical research involving human beings is regulated by the Jarde's law since November 2016. The law distinguishes interventional and non-interventional studies. Both need to be authorized by a Persons Protection Committee. Studies performed on medical data collected during standard clinical care are not considered as studies involving human beings. Medical data are personal data. French Data Protection Authority National has an important role, guarantying the respect of regulation on personal data. We summarize in this article the different types of studies and the role of regulatory authorities.
