5. Tetrahedral satellite formation: Geomagnetic measurements exchange and interpolation

Abstract

This note presents a study of a four-satellite tetrahedral formation to collect, process, and exchange multipoint measurements of geomagnetic field in a near-polar orbit. The study is conducted as a series of numerical experiments based on simulated spacecraft orbits and corresponding geomagnetic field models output. The four satellites are assumed to move in near-circular orbits specifically chosen to maintain the tetrahedron quality. The satellites exchange their simulated magnetometers readings and the collected multipoint measurements are processed on board of any of them thus creating an instantaneous interpolated map of the geomagnetic field in the interior of the tetrahedron. Interpolation is carried out with the use of Kriging algorithms, known in geostatistics for capturing spatial correlation of the data and taking into account statistical properties of the interpolated variables. We propose a concept of a servicing formation, and analyze interpolation accuracy for different formation sizes. It is then discussed how the processed multipoint measurements can be provided as a service to other nearby satellites. Finally, we show that using the existing COTS magnetometers it is possible to obtain real-time interpolation data, which are more precise at a given point and time than a conventional onboard magnetic field model, thus ensuring better attitude determination routines performance in the serviced spacecraft.

These measurements were carried out to improve knowledge of the proton electromagnetic form factor ratio R=μpGEp∕GMp at large values of Q2 and to search for effects beyond the Born approximation in polarization transfer observables at Q2=2.5GeV2. The final results of both experiments were reported in a recent archival publication. A full reanalysis of the data from both experiments was carried out in order to reduce the systematic and, for the GEp-2γ experiment, statistical uncertainties. This technical note provides additional details of the final analysis omitted from the main publication, including the final evaluation of the systematic uncertainties.

Abstract

The gas pressure control units are widely used for various applications. Very often such units operate at large flow rates and pressure drops, thus becoming a powerful noise sources. The problem of noise reduction and protection is a formidable challenge for the design and operation of such units. One of the ways for noise reduction is a muffler installation. However, the in-line installation of such devices may cause malfunction of the pressure reducing valve. Any variation in the output line impedance may provoke instability and self-exited oscillation of the regulator. In this paper the muffler's effect on pressure reducing valve dynamics is studied. The subject of research is a muffler installed at the pressure reducing valve outlet. The mathematical model of this system is implemented in the Simulink software to analyze the muffler impact on pressure reducing valve static and dynamic characteristics and to estimate the system noise level. The dependences between the system and muffler parameters are obtained as a result of simulation. The experimental research at the pneumatic bench is implemented for mathematical model verification. The muffler effect on transient process quality is analyzed. Stability domains are calculated and the muffler influence on system stability margin is evaluated. The theoretical results demonstrate acceptable correlation with experimental data.

Abstract

Power plant of shunting locomotive is a powerful source of infrasound. If the level of infrasound is more than 100 dB, the time of operator work should be limited. The paper presents a simultaneous measurement of infrasound and low-frequency vibration at various modes and loads. The levels of infrasound and low-frequency vibration were measured inside the cabin and near the shunting locomotive. It was detected that infrasound depends on low-frequency vibration. There was a relationship between the level of infrasound and the opened window inside the cabin. Some recommendations to reduce the infrasound level were developed. The results indicate, overall, that the level of infrasound exceeds the standard values. The implementation of developed recommendation could reduce the level of infrasound.

Abstract

International audience; We study a novel architecture for quantum dot (QD) solar cells. While all models and experiments on QD solar cells studied QDs located in the depletion region, we focused on the solar cell structure in which an electron-blocking barrier spatially separates type-II QD absorber from the depletion region. It is important that these QDs are still within the diffusion length from the depletion region. Inter-band QD absorption of the part of solar spectrum with the photon energy less than the energy band gap in the spacers generates a large number of localized excitons in type-II QDs solar cells. The energy of such photons is not utilized in conventional solar cells. However, the proposed architecture enables QD solar cells to benefit from additional photocurrent generated by disintegrating of localized excitons. Hereby we show that hot photoelectron collision with QDs facilitates exciton disintegration. One fifth of solar photons have energy exceeding GaAs bandgap by more than 0.5 eV. They generate hot photoelectrons that usually relax by releasing the excess energy to optical phonons in 1 ps time scale by multiple electron-phonon scattering. Our study has shown that collisions with QDs may compete with the scattering with optical phonons in GaSb/GaAs type-II QD absorber. The excess energy is transferred to confined holes. Such collisions enable confined holes to escape from QDs into mobile states in the valence band of absorber and dissociate excitons into mobile electrons and holes. Collection of these mobile carriers will increase both photocurrent and conversion efficiency limit of GaAs solar cells by estimated 50%, well above the Shockley-Queisser limit. Abstract

Mesoporous TiO2 nanocrystals have been synthesized through sol gel method in presence of triblock copolymer as the structure directing agent. The as-prepared TiO2 nanocrystals have been calcined at different temperatures, i.e., at 400 °C, 500 °C, 600 °C, 700 °C, and 800 °C to demonstrate how their structural properties (morphology, mesoporosity, crystallite phases and sizes) affect the photocatalytic performance. The TEM images indicate that TiO2 nanocrystals calcined at 500 °C have a mesoporous structure with particle sizes of approximately 10–15 nm. However, the TiO2 calcined at 800 °C shows a lower mesoporosity and particle sizes of ∼75 nm. The photocatalytic performance of the newly synthesized photocatalysts has been evaluated through the photodegradation of two different pollutants, i.e., the herbicide imazapyr and phenol, and has been compared to that of the commercially available nonporous Aeroxide TiO2 P-25. For the imazapyr photodegradation, the newly synthesized mesoporous TiO2 nanocrystals show an initial degradation rate around 2 times higher than the rate observed with the non-porous Aeroxide TiO2 P25. The highest photocatalytic activity is observed for the samples calcined at 500 °C followed by those calcined at 800 °C. In contrast to that, a different behavior is found for the photodegradation of phenol. The results indicate that the TiO2 samples calcined at 500 °C show the highest photocatalytic activity for phenol photodegradation. It is proposed that the behavior of the photocatalysts in term of their photocatalytic efficiency and rate constants varies based on the pollutant type. TiO2 calcined at 500 °C can be considered as economically more efficient by saving energy through the lower temperature required in the calcination process.

Abstract

Two-photon absorption of 1560 nm light was used to generate polarized electron beams from unstrained GaAs photocathodes of varying thickness: 625 μm, 0.32 μm, and 0.18 μm. For each photocathode, the degree of spin polarization of the photoemitted beam was less than 50%, contradicting earlier predictions based on simple quantum mechanical selection rules for spherically-symmetric systems but consistent with the more sophisticated model of Bhat et al. (Phys. Rev. B 71 (2005) 035209). Polarization via two-photon absorption was the highest from the thinnest photocathode sample and comparable to that obtained via one-photon absorption (using 778 nm light), with values 40.3±1.0% and 42.6±1.0%, respectively.

Abstract

Thermal decomposition of Ag nitrate on fumed silica resulted in catalysts which showed higher efficiency in CO oxidation as compared to the Ag catalysts described in the literature. The catalysts were active at sub-ambient temperatures, ensured complete conversion of CO at temperatures near ambient (specific activities > 50 h − 1 per total mass of Ag, 30 °C) and remained selective in H 2 -containing mixtures. Water vapors in ppm quantities in the feed gave positive effect on catalytic activity. The catalysts were stable during testing for several hours and could be reactivated after long-term testing with a full retention of activity.

The parity-conserving single-spin beam asymmetry of elastic electron-proton scattering is induced by an absorptive part of the two-photon exchange amplitude. We demonstrate that this asymmetry has logarithmic and double-logarithmic enhancement due to contributions of hard collinear quasi-real photons. An optical theorem is used to evaluate the asymmetry in terms of the total photoproduction cross section on the proton, predicting its magnitude at a few parts per million for high electon beam energies and small scattering angles. Abstract

Even at moderate energy machines, there is a regime where hard pion electroproduction proceeds by a perturbatively calculable process. The process, they claim, is not the leading twist fragmentation one but rather a higher twist process that produces kinematically isolated pions. Semiexclusive data may teach us more about parton distribution functions of the target and the pion distribution amplitude. In addition, there is a connection to generalized parton distribution calculations of exclusive processes in that the perturbative kernel is the same. The subject of this report is semiexclusive photoproduction of hard pions, and the semiexclusive deep inelastic scattering version of the same, e + p {yields} e + {pi} + X, which we can also write as p(e,e{prime}{prime})X. The authors are interested in pions with large transverse momentum (that is what ''hard'' means), and particularly in pions that are kinematically isolated, rather than pions that are part of a jet. And further, they shall hope to isolate processes that can be calculated perturbatively using Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD).

Abstract

The electronic and vibrational properties of 2D honeycomb structures of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) subjected to strain have been investigated using first-principles calculations based on density functional theory. We have studied the evolution of the electronic properties of bulk and layered MoS2, going down from a few layers up to a mono-layer, and next investigated the effect of bi-axial strain on their electronic structure and vibrational frequencies. Both for tensile and compressive biaxial strains, the shrinking of the energy band-gap of MoS2 with increasing level of applied strain is observed and a transition limit of the system from semiconducting to metallic is predicted to occur for strains in the range of 8-10%. We also found a progressive downshift (upshift) of both the E-2g(1) and A(1g) Raman active modes with increasing level of applied tensile (compressive) strain. Interestingly, significant changes in the curvature of the conduction and valence band near their extrema upon the application of strain are also predicted, with correlated variations of the electron and hole effective masses. These changes present interesting possibilities for engineering the electronic properties of 2D structures of MoS2. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
