The general aggression model has shown that both individual and situational factors can predict aggression. However, past research has tended to discuss these two factors separately, which might lead to inconsistency. This study addresses this gap by examining the importance of each predictor of aggression in a Chinese compulsory drug treatment population and further explores the predictors of aggression in various substance use disorder populations.Analyses were conducted using a sample of 894 male participants (mean = 38.30, SD = 8.38) in Chinese compulsory drug rehab. A machine learning model named LightGBM was employed to make predictions. We then used a game-theoretic explanatory technique, SHAP, to estimate the effect of predictors.In the full-sample model, psychological security, parental conflict, and impulsivity were the top 3 predictors. Depression, childhood abuse, and alexithymia positively predicted aggression, whereas psychological security, family cohesion, and gratitude negatively predicted aggression. There were significant differences in the predictive effects of depressants and stimulants. Although the importance of predictors varied between drug-use groups, several individual and situational factors were consistently the most important predictors.All participants in this study were male, and the data were acquired through self-reports from the participants. Domestic and nondomestic aggression are not distinguished. Additionally, our findings cannot support causal conclusions.This study tested a series of classical theories of the predictors of aggression in China's compulsory drug treatment context and extended the ideas of the GAM to various substance use disorder groups. The findings have important implications for aggression treatment.

Background: This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of a solution-focused approach on anger management and violent behavior in adolescents. Method: The study was an experimental and randomized controlled trial including pre-test and post-test measurements and control group. The sample of experimental (n = 24) and control groups (n = 24) of the study consisted of 48 students. A 7-session program of anger management and prevention of violent behavior based on a solution focused approach was applied to the experimental group. Results: There were no statistically significant differences between trait anger, anger in, anger out, anger control sub-dimensions and VTS scores of the experimental and control groups before the intervention (p > 0.05). In post-test and follow-up test, trait anger (23.32 ± 2.83) (21.10 ± 3.51), anger-out (14.95 ± 4.16) (15.50 ± 3.49) and the mean scores of VTS (30.77 ± 4.01) (32.80 ± 4.53) of the individuals in the experimental group were significantly lower, whereas their mean score of anger control (24.86 ± 3.62) (23.65 ± 4.44) were significantly higher than the control group. Conclusion: Solution-oriented approach programs should be used by psychiatric nurses to provide anger management and reduce violence tendencies in adolescents. © 2022 Elsevier Inc.

Managing the physical sequelae of facial trauma is routine for the maxillofacial surgeon. However, managing the psychological consequences is more challenging. The often violent mechanism of injury, changes in appearance, altered self-perception, and self-confidence can significantly impact daily life. This review summarises the literature regarding post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and facial trauma, highlighting evidence to guide clinical practice. PubMed and MEDLINE were searched for relevant keywords and MeSH headings. Articles between 2000-2022 were independently reviewed by two authors. Articles were excluded if the full text was not available in English, did not relate to facial trauma, or was not related to PTSD/psychological sequelae. A total of 211 articles were retrieved. The most common reasons for exclusion were papers not reporting psychological outcomes (n = 68) or not relating to facial trauma (n = 35). Articles were sub-categorised to enable evaluation of key themes. Categories included children and adolescents, cross sectional, longitudinal studies, and interventional studies. Whilst there were potential confounders such as socioeconomic factors, overall, patients who had experienced facial trauma (regardless of the mechanism of injury) had an increased risk of PTSD and anxiety/depression. PTSD following facial injury is increasingly recognised as an important issue. A robust evidence base is desirable to inform clinical practice and provide holistic care to often vulnerable patients. Identifying those at increased risk of negative psychological sequelae is essential. We have appraised the literature relevant to OMFS trauma clinicians.

Hostile attribution bias (HAB) has been considered as a risk factor of various types of psychosocial adjustment problem, and contributes to displaced aggression (DA). The neural basis of HAB and the underlying mechanisms of how HAB predicts DA remain unclear.The current study used degree centrality (DC) and resting-sate functional connectivity (RSFC) to investigate the functional connection pattern related to HAB in 503 undergraduate students. Furthermore, the "Decoding" was used to investigate which psychological components the maps of the RSFC-behavior may be related to. Finally, to investigate whether and how the RSFC pattern, HAB predicts DA, we performed mediation analyses.We found that HAB was negatively associated with DC in bilateral temporal poles (TP) and positively correlated with DC in the putamen and thalamus; Moreover, HAB was negatively associated with the strength of functional connectivity between TP and brain regions in the theory of mind network (ToM), and positively related to the strength of functional connectivity between the thalamus and regions in the ToM network. The "Decoding" showed the maps of the RSFC-behavior may involve the theory mind, autobiographic, language, comprehension and working memory. Mediation analysis further showed that HAB mediated the relationship between some neural correlates of the HAB and DA.The current results need to be further tested by experimental methods or longitudinal design in further studies.These findings shed light on the neural underpinnings of HAB and provide a possible mediation model regarding the relationships among RSFC pattern, HAB, and displaced aggression.

There is limited evidence for the association among soft drink consumption, aggressive behaviors, and depressive symptoms among the adolescents.Data were derived from a national representative sample of Youth Risk Behavior Surveys of United States during 2011 to 2019. Binary logistic regression models with complex sampling design were used to estimate the effect of soft drink consumption on aggressive behaviors and depressive symptoms. Mediating analysis was used to explore the association between soft drink consumption and depressive symptoms by aggressive behaviors.The total prevalence of depressive symptoms was 3l.2 % (30.3 %-32.0 %). Compared with none of soft drink consumption,1 time/day (OR: 1.29, 95%CI: 1.19-1.41), 1-2 times/day (OR: 1.49, 95%CI: 1.33-1.67), and ≥3 times/day (OR: 1.95, 95%CI: 1.70-2.24) were significantly associated with increased risk of aggressive behaviors. High levels of soft drink consumption (1-2 times/day, OR: 1.19, 95%CI: 1.07-1.32; ≥3 times/day, OR: 1.61, 95%CI: 1.42-1.81) and aggressive behaviors (OR: 1.98, 95%CI: 1.84-2.13) were found to be significantly associated with increased risk of depressive symptoms. A linear dose-response relationship of soft drink consumption with aggressive behaviors and depressive symptoms was found in this study (all p 0.001). Aggressive behaviors partially mediated the association between soft drink consumption and depressive symptoms and each pathway was statistically significant.The causal relationship was not able to certain because of the cross-sectional design.The mediating role of aggressive behaviors on the association of high levels of soft drink consumptions with depressive symptoms should be paid more attention among the adolescents.

Introduction Although delusional jealousy accounts for merely 10% of delusional disorders, it is associated to risk of serious violence and suicide. With this clinical case, we intend to explore the difficulties in the pharmacological approach of delusional jealousy disorder and to summarise the most recent findings in the treatment of this condition. Methods Case report. Case presentation A 76-year-old man involuntarily admitted to a psychiatric ward due to threats of physical aggression to his wife in the context of irreducible ideas of her infidelity. Initially, we observed an improvement of symptomatology with risperidone and its long-acting injectable formulation, but the emergence of hypotensive side effects required the off-label use of paliperidone palmitate 50 mg/ml. Conclusions Few studies, mainly case reports, look at the specific treatment of delusional jealousy. Given the negative consequences for patients and for their spouses, better scientific evidence to treat this condition is needed.

Aggressive driving contributes to crashes, which often result in serious or fatal injuries. Efforts to reduce road trauma need to include strategies to reduce emotional and aggressive driving. Thus far, solutions have not comprehensively addressed the reasons why drivers become aggressive. This study provides preliminary evidence of the effectiveness of the Reduce Aggressive driving (RAD) program in improving driver behavior. The RAD is based on group discussion, feedback, and goal setting to encourage more positive responses to triggers for aggressive driving. The aim of this study was to evaluate the delivery of the RAD and its impact on driver anger and aggression.A total of 94 drivers, ranging in age from 18 to 74 years (Mean = 38; SD = 15; 56% males) attended one two-hour online RAD session during which they identified triggers for their aggression and developed individual strategies to avoid aggressive driving. Most (87%) participants agreed that the RAD helped them generate realistic strategies to avoid aggressive driving. A subset of 67 participants provided self-reported anger and aggressive driving tendencies one month, and four months after the RAD.When these were compared to baseline measures taken before participation in the RAD, decreases across all measures were observed. Thus, anger and aggressive driving significantly decreased one month after the RAD, and these decreases were maintained at the four month follow up; providing evidence of the effectiveness of the RAD in reducing these dangerous behaviors. Further research is needed to objectively measure changes in behavior to and support broader roll-out of the RAD program.

Aggressive behaviors could be considered as a dynamic of communication, in which aggression is a language to be understood, to be deciphered by two protagonists : the aggressor coping with a stressful and threatening situation and the aggressed individual coping with an aggressive acting out. The following questions are addressed: (a) What does aggression mean to the aggressor, what does it mean to the aggressed individual? (b) What does the aggressor want or try to express, and why does he or she use this mode of expression and action over another? (c) How does the aggressed individual react, and what is the impact of his or her response on the aggressor? This article reviews studies on the definition of aggression, its measurement, its developmental role and its associated risk factors in children and adolescents. First, aggression in children and adolescents with typical and atypical development is examined based on a developmental approach, clinical case studies in child and adolescent psychiatry, and an empirical study on aggression in autism. Then, in light of these studies, the problem of violence among younger and younger children and adolescents, is discussed. Finally, taking together these studies and discussion, a model is proposed that accounts for factors involved in aggressive behaviors and for different possible levels of intervention. Physical and/or psychic threats generate stress and may therefore lead to offensive or defensive aggression. Stress has to be considered in its physiological dimension (biological stress responses) and psychological dimension (perceived stress). This model reveals a vicious circle: when the main response to aggression is repression, it may reinforce physical/psychic threats and stress perceived by the aggressor, and in turn aggressive behaviors. Intervention can occur at three levels: the stressful situation, the aggressor (perception of the stressful situation and his or her response), and the aggressed individual (perception of the aggression and his or her response). This model, like all models, is limited but it offers a discussion and perspectives to understand the different links that form the "chain of aggressive behavior" and the relationships between exposure to violence and expression of violence. The article concludes on the interest of a muldisciplinary approach to aggression integrating physiological, psychological and sociological dimensions.

The present study attempted to identify risk factors for suicidality and hostility/aggression in patients with bipolar disorders. Data on 3521 patients were extracted from the Japanese Adverse Drug Event Report (JADER) database. There were 134 reports regarding suicidal behavior/ideation, and 129 patients were judged to have it. Standardized Medical Dictionary for Regulatory Activities queries indicated that 248 adverse drug events pertained to hostility/aggression, and 218 patients were considered to show hostility/aggression. A multiple logistic regression analysis revealed the association of the risk for suicidal behavior/ideation with bipolar II disorder [adjusted odds ratio (aOR): 4.55, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.90-10.9], male sex (aOR: 1.23, 95% CI: 1.02-1.48), age50 years (aOR: 1.75, 95% CI: 1.43-2.15), the administration of aripiprazole (aOR: 1.27, 95% CI: 1.00-1.60), and akathisia (aOR: 3.05, 95% CI: 1.80-5.18), while lithium carbonate decreased its odds (aOR: 0.664, 95% CI: 0.537-0.821). The risk of hostility/aggression was associated with male sex (aOR: 1.22, 95% CI: 1.06-1.40), lithium carbonate (aOR: 0.823, 95% CI: 0.710-0.953), and carbamazepine (aOR: 0.693, 95% CI: 0.500-0.961). No association between suicidal behavior/ideation and hostility/aggression was recognized. The present study proposes factors related with suicidal behavior/ideation and hostility/aggression in patients with bipolar disorders using the JADER database. Lithium carbonate appeared to decrease the risks of suicidal behavior/ideation and hostility/aggression in patients with bipolar disorders, and akathisia may be associated with the former risk. Further studies are required to evaluate the identified signals.

To quantify the relative odds of self-reported seriously violent behavior in adolescence and young adulthood given one's self-reported violent media diet in childhood.Baseline data were collected nationally online from 1,586 youth 10-15 years of age in 2006. Follow-up data were collected in 2010-2011 and 2016. Children reported the amount of music, video games, television, websites with real people, and cartoons that depicted "physical fighting, hurting, shooting, or killing." Seriously violent behavior was assessed 5 and 10 years later.887 adolescents completed the survey at baseline and 5-year follow-up. The relative odds of reporting seriously violent behavior over time were 2.45-fold higher (p.001) with each incremental increase in one's baseline violent media diet. After adjusting for other potentially influential characteristics, results persisted (aOR = 1.70, p = .01). The relative odds also were elevated for those frequently exposed to violence in music (aOR = 3.28, p = .03), television (aOR = 3.51, p.001), and video games (aOR = 3.27, p = .02). 760 young adults completed measures at baseline and 10-year follow-up. The relative odds of seriously violent behavior increased 2.18-fold (p = .001) with each incremental increase in one's baseline violent media diet. After adjusting for other factors, the association persisted (aOR = 1.72, p = .03). Frequent exposure to violence in video games (aOR = 3.28, p = .03) and television (aOR = 3.14, p = .02) also were implicated.Exposure to violent media in childhood may be one modifiable influence on seriously violent behavior in adolescence and adulthood, even for those who have other risk factors.

While alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a well-established risk factor for intimate partner aggression (IPA), effective treatments for co-occurring AUD and IPA (AUD/IPA) are lacking. Oxytocin is one promising pharmacological candidate for AUD/IPA given its potential to modulate social behavior and attenuate alcohol use. However, emerging data suggests that oxytocin's prosocial effects are inconsistent, and a small number of studies have also found that oxytocin might have the potential to be aggressogenic. No studies have directly examined the impact of oxytocin on alcohol- or IPA-related outcomes in a dyadic context.The goal of this double-blind, randomized, and placebo-controlled trial was to examine the effects of a single dose of intranasal oxytocin (40 international units) on cue-induced alcohol craving, subjective aggression, laboratory task-based IPA, and cortisol reactivity in a sample of 100 couples (N = 200 individuals) with AUD and physical IPA in their current relationship.There were no statistically significant differences between the oxytocin and placebo conditions for any of the primary outcomes.Findings suggest that a single dose of intranasal oxytocin was not efficacious in mitigating alcohol craving or aggression in this sample. Although hypotheses were not supported, the findings provide important evidence that oxytocin was not aggressogenic in this high-risk sample. Future research investigating dispositional and contextual moderators of oxytocin response in addition to the therapeutic effects of more intensive oxytocin dosing or administration strategies on alcohol craving and aggression is warranted.

To explore the effect of cognitive-behavioral programs on aggression and self-concept among institutionalized children with conduct disorder. A quiz-experimental design was employed in this study.Conduct Disorder (CD) is defined as repetitive and persistent behavior that violates the rules of society and social norms. It is also characterized by aggressive behaviors toward people or animals, dishonesty or theft, destruction of property, or serious violation of rules, and persists in children or adolescents in the past 12 months before age 18.This research was carried out at the Dammam Observation Center in Saudi Arabia and the Cairo Caring Center in Egypt. Approximately 100 institutionalized children with conduct disorder who had evidence of conduct disorder were included in the study as part of a purposive sampling procedure. The information was gathered through the use of three different tools: Aggressive behavior and self-concept scales, as well as a sociodemographic data sheet.According to the findings, children with conduct disorder exhibited less aggression after participating in cognitive behavioral sessions (p = .011), resulting in lower mean aggression scores for the intervention group than the control group. After the training, about 64% of them had a moderate level of self-concept, whereas 44% of them had a moderate level of self-concept before the program. The study also revealed a statistically significant negative correlation between aggressive behavior and self-concept.The post-intervention remediation of aggressive behaviors and self-concept improvement point to the positive effect of the cognitive-behavioral program. The current study recommended that a cognitive-behavioral program is an effective, low-cost, and noninvasive intervention to improve self-concept and minimize aggressive behavior among institutionalized children with conduct disorder.

Background/purpose Gay and bisexual men are at a higher risk of mental and physical health problems than heterosexual men, reporting higher frequencies of harassment and discrimination in both housing and employment domains. Psychological inflexibility/experiential avoidance (PI/EA) refers to behaviors that are rigidly guided by psychological reactions rather than direct contingencies or personal values; PI/EA referring to a key psychopathology behavior related to greater mental illness. The objective of the study was to examine the association of various types of harassment with PI/EA and the effects of multiple types and site harassment on PI/EA among Taiwanese emergent adult gay and bisexual men. Methods A total of 305 gay and bisexual men aged between 20 and 25 years were recruited into this study. The level of PI/EA and types of harassment were evaluated and further analysis the effect of harassment on PI/EA. Results Findings indicated that various types of harassment exerted significant effects on PI/EA in emergent adult gay and bisexual men; furthermore, the effect was cumulative. The result also revealed that victims of verbal ridicule and relational exclusion, victims of physical aggression and theft of belongings, and victims of cyber harassment had significantly higher PI/EA. Conclusion Harassment experiences appeared to be significantly associated with PI/EA, and the effects could be cumulative. It would be beneficial to construct a friendly world for emergent adult gay and bisexual men. Evaluation and intervention with PI/EA improvement should be considered for emergent adult gay and bisexual men with traditional and cyber harassment experiences.

The goal of this study was to elucidate the fundamental connectivity-resting-state connectivity-within and between nodes in the olfactory and prosocial (PS) cores, which permits the expression of social monogamy in males; and how differential connectivity accounts for differential expression of prosociality and aggression.Using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging, we integrated graph theory analysis to compare functional connectivity between two culturally/behaviorally distinct male prairie voles (Microtusochrogaster).Illinois males display significantly higher levels of prosocial behavior and lower levels of aggression than KI (Kansas dam and Illinois sire) males, which are associated with differences in underlying neural mechanisms and brain microarchitecture. Shared connectivity 1) between the anterior hypothalamic area and the paraventricular nucleus and 2) between the medial preoptic area and bed nucleus of the stria terminalis and the nucleus accumbens core suggests essential relationships required for male prosocial behavior. In contrast, Illinois males displayed higher levels of global connectivity and PS intracore connectivity, a greater role for the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis and anterior hypothalamic area, which were degree connectivity hubs, and greater PS and olfactory intercore connectivity.These findings suggest that behavioral differences are associated with PS core degree of connectivity and postsignal induction. This transgenerational system may serve as powerful mental health and drug abuse translational model in future studies.

The current study explored the temporal stability in relational aggressor's profiles over a 6-month period. Data were gathered at two time points from a sample of 2207 Greek junior high school students (52.8% females) aged between 13 and 16 (M = 14.04, SD = 0.81) years. This study also considered the role of callous-unemotional traits and hostile attribution bias in predicting profile membership. Results of latent profile and latent transition analyses revealed three distinct relational aggression profiles (i.e., low relational aggression, moderate relational aggression/high reactive indirect relational aggression, and high relational aggression). The examination of the short-term longitudinal stability of these profiles over a period of 6 months showed that their basic structure remained stable at both the within-sample and within-person level across measurement points. In addition, this study showed that callous-unemotional traits and hostile attribution bias affect adolescents' possibility of membership in all three profiles. Adolescents scoring high on callous-unemotional traits and hostile attribution bias were more likely to be associated with the more aggressive profiles, namely with the high relational aggression, and to a lesser extent, with the moderate relational aggression profile. Overall, this study demonstrated that the basic structure of relational aggression profiles remained stable across a short-term time period and provides numerous crucial practical implications including social-cognitive reframing interventions, as well as enhancement of social skills and empathic reactions.

Bullying victimization has been linked to an elevated risk of both internalizing and externalizing problems, yet the mechanisms underlying these associations, especially from the perspective of naturally occurring informal cliques, are not well understood. Based on two contrasting hypotheses from the healthy context paradox and the peer contagion hypothesis, the current 2-year longitudinal study (a) investigated the interaction effects of individual victimization (i.e., physical, verbal, and relational forms) and clique victimization norms on their reactive-proactive aggression and (b) examined whether they were distinct to these effects on depressive symptoms. Objective Despite its clinical relevance to pediatric mental health, the relationship of irritability with anger and aggression remains unclear. We aimed to quantify the relationships between well-validated, commonly used measurements of these constructs and informant effects in a clinically relevant population. Method A total of 195 children with primary diagnoses of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, disruptive mood dysregulation disorder, or no major disorder and their parents rate irritability, anger, and aggression on measures of each construct. Construct and informant relationships were mapped via multi-trait, multi-method factor analysis. Results Parent- and child-reported irritability and child-reported anger are highly associated (r = 0.89) but have some significant differences. Irritability overlaps with outward expression of anger but diverges from Anger in anger suppression and control. Aggression has weaker associations with both Irritability (r = 0.56) and Anger (r = 0.49). Across measures, informant source explains a substantial portion of response variance. Conclusion Irritability, albeit distinct from Aggression, is highly associated with Anger, with notable overlap in child-reported outward expression of anger, providing empirical support for formulations of clinical irritability as a proneness to express anger outwardly. Diagnostic and clinical intervention work on this facet of anger can likely translate to irritability. Further research on external validation of divergence of these constructs in anger suppression and control may guide future scale revisions. The proportion of response variance attributable to informant may be an under-recognized confound in clinical research and construct measurement.

Background Sleep-related problems are highly prevalent comorbidities in Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Objective This study aimed to investigate the associations between sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) and behavioral and cognitive functions in children with and without ADHD. Methods A total of 341 children were included (ADHD group: 155, control group: 186; age: 6–10 years). The participants' sleep-related symptoms were assessed using a parent-rated questionnaire, and they were categorized into low- and high-risk SDB groups based on their scores. Behavioral symptoms were assessed using the Behavioral Assessment System for Children, Second Edition (BASC-2), and cognitive sustained attention and inhibitory control were assessed using a computer-based continuous performance test. Results In the ADHD group, the high-risk SDB children showed significantly higher scores than the low-risk SDB group in externalizing problems (F = 4.22; P = 0.042), including hyperactivity (F = 4.65; P = 0.033) and attention problems (F = 8.19; P = 0.005), but not internalizing problems. Meanwhile, in the control group, the high-risk SDB children showed significantly higher scores than the low-risk SDB group in internalizing problems (F = 9.89; P = 0.002), depression (F = 9.45; P = 0.002), and somatization (F = 7.83; P = 0.006), as well as in externalizing problems (F = 7.72; P = 0.006), including hyperactivity (F = 6.23; P = 0.013), aggression (F = 5.00; P = 0.027), and conduct problems (F = 6.79; P = 0.010). Contrary to the behavioral outcomes, none of the attention performance subscale scores showed significant differences between the high- and low-risk SDB groups in either the ADHD or control group. Conclusions The present findings suggest that SDB is associated with behavioral problems in children with ADHD and controls, with stronger associations in control children. On the contrary, SDB has no association with cognitive attention performance. This study extends our understanding of the associations of SDB with behavioral symptoms and cognitive functions in children.

Violence and aggressive behaviors among youth are a leading cause of Emergency Department (ED) mental health (MH) encounters. A consistent method is needed for public health research, to identify ED encounters associated with aggression. The aim of this study was to develop such a screening procedure.Electronic records and administrative claims data related to MH related ED encounters at one of Pediatric Health Information System (PHIS) Children's Hospitals in the United States from January 1, 2019 to December 31, 2019.The authors selected a combination of ICD-10 codes to screen MH ED encounters for aggression; and then conducted a chart review to compare characteristics of groups that screened positive vs. screened negative, and groups with confirmed vs. without confirmed aggression.Unique ED encounters associated with a MH related ICD-10 code from a one-year period at the study institution were extracted (n = 3092 MH ED encounters). Encounters with any aggression-associated codes were identified as "screen-positive" (N = 349). From the remaining "screen-negative" encounters, 352 unique encounters were randomly selected as a comparison group. Both groups were chart reviewed to investigate the accuracy of the screening method.Chart review confirmed aggression in 287 of 349 screen-positive and 48 of 352 select screen-negative, chart-reviewed encounters. Additional codes were added, with a goal of finding the combination of codes with the highest accuracy. The resulting screen had sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values of 0.901, 0.817, 0.818, and 0.864, respectively.This paper presents a screening method for identifying ED encounters related to aggression. A replication study will be necessary to validate the method prior to applying to large claims data. If validated, it will support future research on this important population.

Silent corticotroph adenomas (SCAs) behave more aggressively than other non-functioning adenomas (NFAs). This study aims to expand the body of knowledge of the behavior of SCAs.Retrospective analysis of 196 non-corticotroph NFAs and 20 SCAs from 2012-2017 was completed. Demographics, clinical presentation, imaging, and biochemical data were gathered. The primary endpoint was to identify features of SCAs versus other NFAs that suggest aggressive disease, including pre-surgical comorbidities, postoperative complications, extent of tumor, and recurrence. Golden-angle radial sparse parallel (GRASP) magnetic resonance images were obtained from a subset of SCAs and NFAs. Permeability data were obtained to compare signal-to-time curve variation between the 2 groups.With multivariate regression analysis, SCAs showed higher rates of hemorrhage on preoperative imaging than NFAs (P = 0.017). SCAs presented more frequently with headache (P = 0.012), vision changes (P = 0.041), and fatigue (P = 0.028). SCAs exhibited greater extent of tumor burden with increased occurrence of stalk deviation (P = 0.008), suprasellar invasion (P = 0.021), optic chiasm compression (P = 0.022), and cavernous sinus invasion (P = 0.015). On GRASP imaging, SCAs had significantly lower permeability of contrast than NFAs (P = 0.001). Thirty percent of SCAs were noted to recur with a 14% recurrence rate in other NFAs, though this difference was not of statistical significance (P = 0.220).SCAs exhibit features of more aggressive disease. Interestingly, a significant increase in recurrence was not seen despite these features. The results of this study support the growing body of evidence that SCAs behave more aggressively than other NFPAs and was able to provide some insight into factors that may contribute to recurrence.

Describe the demographic and clinical characteristics of children presenting to the emergency department (ED) for agitation and aggression from school versus other sites.We performed a retrospective cross-sectional study of children 5 to 18 years old who were evaluated in an urban tertiary care pediatric ED with a chief complaint of agitation or aggression. We examined demographics, disposition, and payments for children presenting from school versus other sites. We conducted multivariable logistic regression to identify predictors of referral site (school versus all other sites, school versus home) and discharge status (home versus higher level of psychiatric care).Of the 513 included children, 147 (29%) presented from school. Children were more likely to present from school versus other sites if they were Black (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 2.26, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.32, 3.88), Latinx (aOR 2.91, 95% CI 1.42, 5.97), or had special educational needs (aOR 2.55, 95% CI 1.64, 3.97). These associations persisted in the analysis of school versus home referrals. Children presenting from school versus all other sites were more likely to be discharged home (aOR 1.60, 95% CI 1.05, 2.44), although this difference did not persist when comparing school versus only home referral. A total of $154,269 (median $367 per encounter) was paid for school referrals to the ED.Children with agitation and aggression referred from school were more likely to be Black, Latinx, or have special educational needs. Future efforts should identify and address root causes of this disparity to decrease ED referrals, reduce healthcare spending, and address inequities.

Based on claims that dogs are less aggressive and show more sophisticated socio-cognitive skills compared with wolves, dog domestication has been invoked to support the idea that humans underwent a similar 'self-domestication' process. Here, we review studies on wolf-dog differences and conclude that results do not support such claims: dogs do not show increased socio-cognitive skills and they are not less aggressive than wolves. Rather, compared with wolves, dogs seek to avoid conflicts, specifically with higher ranking conspecifics and humans, and might have an increased inclination to follow rules, making them amenable social partners. These conclusions challenge the suitability of dog domestication as a model for human social evolution and suggest that dogs need to be acknowledged as animals adapted to a specific socio-ecological niche as well as being shaped by human selection for specific traits.

To examine caregiving predictors of maternal reported sleep problems and child behavioral and cognitive outcomes in early childhood.A prospective longitudinal study from 6 to 84 months of age.Lab visits, assessments, and questionnaires conducted with a community-based sample.One hundred sixty-four African American and White children, their mothers, and teachers.Parenting behavior was measured during a free-play task at 6 months of age, maternal-report of child sleep problems was completed at 6 timepoints, and teacher report of child aggression and attention was collected in kindergarten and second grade.Latent growth curve modeling revealed that maternal reported sleep problems decreased in children from 18 to 84 months and harsh-intrusive parenting at 6 months predicted sleep problems at 18 months. Maternal reported sleep problems at 18 months predicted aggressive behaviors in kindergarten and second grade.Parenting at 6 months of age exerts an influence on sleep quality at 18 months which is associated with aggressive behavior in early childhood.

Aggression affects nearly all mental disorders and constitutes a burden for society in general and the mental health sector in particular. An incomplete understanding of its underlying neurobiological mechanisms limits treatment efficacy and hinders the development of precision medicine approaches. Here we review recent efforts employing neuroimaging, hormonal and (epi)genetic data to develop biomarkers for aggression. Our goal is to discuss limitations of these previous studies and propose strategies which may help overcome these limitations in order to achieve both: transdiagnostic classification and prediction of individual treatment outcomes. In order to develop clinically relevant biomarkers for aggression, candidate biomarkers have to be combined and their reliability and validity has to be tested rigorously in large patient cohorts. Besides generating a better mechanistic understanding, we should strive to create multimodal biomarkers that medical professionals can utilize in clinical practice to guide and improve the management and clinical outcome of pathological aggression.

Urban free-ranging dogs (UFDs) are opportunistic and feed on leftovers, whether given to them or scavenged from trash cans while they wander about the streets. Most free-ranging dogs living in rural areas (RFDs) protect property and cattle. Depending on their behaviors, such as aggression or roaming, both UFDs and RFDs can be a health problem for people and other animals. The aim of this study was to investigate behavioral differences between UFDs and RFDs. Due to the guardian role of RFDs, it was hypothesized that they would be more aggressive and present less locomotor activity than the UFDs. In this study, 40 UFDs living on the Federal University of Viçosa (UFV) campus and 15 RFDs living on 6 rural properties in Viçosa, Brazil, were examined. The dogs were observed for twelve months, at different times during a 24-hour cycle, with 14 behavioral categories being recorded. RFDs showed significantly more vigilance (P< 0.01) and interspecific agonistic behavior (P< 0.01) than UFDs. UFDs showed significantly more locomotor behavior (P< 0.01) than RFDs. UFDs are less aggressive than RFDs, but they move more often. Resource availability, such as scattered food, influenced the locomotor activity in UFDs, whereas RFDs did not experience the same effect as they were supplied with a temporal and spatial feeding schedule. To the RFDs, concentrated resources such as food and shelter are highly defensible. This study showed that, in Viçosa (Brazil), RFDs and UFDs displayed different behaviors. These differences are most likely driven by the resource-defense behavior of RFDs. Background Affective dysregulation (AD), or synonymously "irritability," is a transdiagnostic construct that serves as a diagnostic criterion in various childhood mental disorders. It is characterized by severe or persistent outbursts of anger and aggression. Emotional self-regulation is highly dependent on the ability to process relevant and ignore conflicting emotional information. Understanding neurophysiological mechanisms underlying impairment in AD may provide a starting point for research on pharmacological treatment options and evaluation of psychotherapeutic intervention. Methods A total of 120 children 8 to 12 years of age (63 with AD and 57 typically developing) were examined using an emotional Stroop task. Signal-decomposed electroencephalographic recordings providing information about the affected sensory–perceptual, response selection, or motor information processing stage were combined with source localization. Results Behavioral performance revealed dysfunctional cognitive-emotional conflict monitoring in children with AD, suggesting difficulties in differentiating between conflicting and nonconflicting cognitive-emotional information. This was confirmed by the electroencephalographic data showing that they cannot intensify response selection processes during conflicting cognitive-emotional situations. Typically developing children were able to do so and activated a functional–neuroanatomical network comprising the left inferior parietal cortex (Brodmann area 40), right middle frontal (Brodmann area 10), and right inferior/orbitofrontal (Brodmann area 47) regions. Purely sensory–perceptual selection and motor execution processes were not modulated in AD, as evidenced by Bayesian analyses. Conclusions Behavioral and electroencephalogram data suggest that children with AD cannot adequately modulate controlled response selection processes given emotionally ambiguous information. Which neurotransmitter systems underlie these deficits and how they can be improved are important questions for future research.

Desensitization, the reduction of cognitive, emotional, and/or behavioral responses to a stimulus, is an automatic and unconscious phenomenon often experienced in everyday life. Exposure to violent media, especially violent video games, may cause desensitization to real-life violence. Desensitization to violence blocks empathy which is needed to trigger the moral reasoning process that triggers prosocial responding. Representative research was reviewed to examine links between exposure to violent video games and desensitization to violence in children and adolescents. It was concluded that exposure to violent video games increases the risk of desensitization to violence, which in turn may increase aggression and decrease prosocial behavior. Parents should be counseled to discuss the differences between real and screen violence, to encourage nonviolent problem-solving, and to provide empathy-building experiences for their children.

Road rage is a serious issue impacting road safety on Australian roads. This study investigated the psychological antecedents involved in aggressive driver behaviours. Specifically, the study investigated the relationships between metacognitive beliefs, anger rumination, trait driver anger, and driver aggression; and examined the extent of aggressive behaviours in a sample of Australian drivers (N = 246). An inspection of cross-tabulations indicated that nearly all drivers engaged in verbal driver aggression (94%), approximately half of the drivers engaged in vehicle aggression (53%), and approximately a quarter of the drivers engaged in physical aggression (27%). Driver aggression was more commonly reported from males, open licensed, and middle-aged drivers. Structural path analysis indicated that there was a hierarchical series of relationships present, in that metacognitive beliefs influenced cognitive constructs such as anger rumination and constructive expression. Additionally, such factors were shown to more prominently influence trait driver anger, and the degree to which it was expressed. Bivariate correlations also demonstrated that the relationships carried forward to more specific dimensions of anger rumination and driver aggression styles. The findings of this study may assist to identify the origins of psychological mechanisms involved with anger progression and expression and inform potential interventions for aggressive driving behaviours.

Alternative reproductive tactics (ARTs) exist when individuals of one sex (usually males) adopt different strategies to achieve reproductive success. Although it is well known that the males adopting the different tactics often vary in their morphological, physiological and mating-based behavioural traits, what is not well understood is whether variation also exists in their behaviour outside the mating context. Here, we used the round goby, Neogobius melanostomus, a globally prolific invasive species where males exhibit ARTs, to address this knowledge gap. The nonmating behaviour of sneaker and guarder males were compared for differences in boldness, exploration, activity, aggression, sociality and dispersal. We found that sneaker males were more active, explorative and bold, as well as less aggressive compared to guarder males. Additionally, in an exploratory analysis, we found that while many behavioural traits were positively correlated in guarder males, few were correlated in sneaker males, suggesting that sneaker males might be more behaviourally plastic. The results of this study help expand our knowledge of the many ways that alternative reproductive tactics may differ from each other, particularly in nonmating contexts.

Combat exposure has been linked to increased risk of suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, and death by suicide, and suicidality has been linked with altered testosterone levels. In this study, we examined morning baseline free and total testosterone levels and the effect of dexamethasone administration on testosterone levels in male combat veterans with or without a history of suicide attempt. Demographic and clinical parameters of the study participants were assessed and recorded. Blood samples were collected between 8:00 and 8:30 a.m. on the day prior to and following dexamethasone (0.5 mg) ingestion. Suicide attempters had higher schedule for suicidal ideation (SSI) scores in comparison to non-attempters. Baseline free and total testosterone levels were lower in suicide attempters compared to non-attempters. In the whole sample, both baseline free and total testosterone levels negatively correlated with SSI scores. Free testosterone levels decreased after dexamethasone administration among non-attempters but not among attempters. Free testosterone post-dexamethasone levels positively correlated with aggression scores among non-attempters but not among suicide attempters. Our findings indicate that there are substantial differences in the testosterone regulation between combat veterans with or without a history of suicide attempt. Studies of the relation between the testosterone function and suicidal behavior among combat veterans may lead to improvement in detection of suicidality and finding new pharmacological targets for prevention of suicide among veterans.

Background and purpose We aimed to examine epidemiological data and identify risk factors for sexual assault. This study included women seeking care at the Geneva University Hospitals emergency obstetrics and gynaecological unit. Method Retrospective, sociodemographic, and clinical data were collected from the medical reports. Results We reviewed 836 medical charts and registered 92.8 women and girls per year who consulted the emergency department after sexual assault. The average age was 26 (±12) years, with a median of 23 years. Body lesions were reported in 525 patients (63%) and genital traumatic lesions were reported in 230 (28%) patients. Sexual assault by a stranger was reported in 436 cases (52%). Thirty percent of patients knew their aggressor. Aggressions were predominantly committed on the weekend, accounting for 367 cases (46%), with nearly two-thirds (65%, n = 474) occurring between 10 pm and 6 am. In total, 399 (48%) patients who were sexually assaulted reported having consumed alcohol and 102 (12%) reported having taken drugs prior to the aggression; 80 (10%) patients had consumed both and 286 (34%) had amnesia. Half of the sample sought and received medical care within 24 h from the time the aggression took place. Conclusion Sexual assault risk factors in our study population in Geneva included use of drugs and alcohol, with amnesia. Future prevention and education interventions should target these areas.

This paper postulates a distinction between two types of discursive aggression in the context of humour production. This theoretical argument is supported by a qualitative (meta)pragmatic analysis of posts on the RoastMe subreddit devoted to an online community's original humorous practice based on jocular insults. The study of emic (community members') and etic (outsiders') metapragmatic evaluations of the content on the subreddit yields divergent insider/outsider interpretations of the practice at hand; it also uncovers some ambivalence in the polysemous folk concepts of roasting and cyberbullying and the relationship between them. “Roasting” and “cyberbullying” are formally distinguished based on the intended form of aggression on which each relies. Also, the points of convergence between humour and aggression are surveyed. First, mock aggression underlies benevolent humour (typified by roasting proper); second, genuine aggression (exemplified by cyberbullying proper) may amuse individuals other than the target of discursive aggression.

The issue of aggressive behaviours among military populations is important for a number of reasons, including the potential associated occupational, social and functional impacts. Controlled aggressive behaviour is an adaptive requirement of some military roles, however, this aggression can become maladaptive when uncontrolled, or contextually inappropriate. Elevated aggression among deployed veterans has been identified in a number of studies, although the reasons for it are not well understood. Deployed populations have elevated levels of stress and trauma exposure, have higher rates of childhood and other lifetime trauma exposures and have a heightened risk for subsyndromal or full PTSD. Both trauma exposure and PTSD have been found to be associated with executive function deficits, and increased anger and aggressive behaviours. The purpose of this paper was to explore the contribution of both early PTSD symptoms and cognitive disinhibition in predicting increased aggressive behaviour following deployment in a healthy active serving cohort. After controlling for pre-deployment PTSD symptoms and cognitive function, there were significant main effects of both PTSD symptoms and cognitive function on increased aggression at post-deployment. Furthermore, the positive association between PTSD symptoms and post-deployment aggression was moderated by response inhibition deficits in the domains of false positive errors as well as faster reaction times. Subsidiary analyses showed that the effects of increased reaction time in particular increased the likelihood of PTSD symptoms being coupled with increased aggression. These findings highlight the potential effects of repeated occupational stress exposure and point to possible cognitive adaptations and long-term risk for disorder.

Facial expressions are important social communicators. In addition to communicating social information, the specific muscular movements of expressions may serve additional functional roles. For example, recalibration theory hypothesizes that the anger expression exaggerates facial cues of strength, an indicator of human fighting ability, to increase bargaining power in conflicts. Supporting this theory is evidence that faces displaying one element of an angry expression (e.g. lowered eyebrows) are perceived to be stronger than faces with opposite expression features (e.g. raised eyebrows for fear). The present study sought stronger evidence that more natural manipulations of facial anger also enhance perceived strength. We used expression aftereffects to bias perception of a neutral face towards anger and observed the effects on perceptions of strength. In addition, we tested the specificity of the strength-cue enhancing effect by examining whether two other expressions, fear and happy, also affected perceptions of strength. We found that, as predicted, a face biased to be perceived as angrier was rated as stronger compared to a baseline rating, whereas a face biased to be more fearful was rated as weaker, consistent with the purported function of fear as an act of submission. Interestingly, faces biased towards a happy expression were also perceived as stronger, though the effect was smaller than that for anger. Overall, the results supported the recalibration theory hypothesis that the anger expression enhances cues of strength to increase bargaining power in conflicts, but with some limitations regarding the specificity of the function to anger.

By examining a set of Twitter interactions following a 2018 media event, this article contributes to a growing body of research addressing the fluid and shifting nature of relational work in digital contexts. The Twitter interactions were posted in response to a tweet by documentarian Hari Kondabolu, in which he thanked actor Hank Azaria for Azaria's apology about voicing the controversial character of “Apu” on the long-running animated television program, The Simpsons. Kondabolu's tweet prompted responses from over 500 Twitter users, some of whom contributed to larger discussions about racism and structural inequality on one hand, to extreme political correctness on the other. As they participated in acts of online stancetaking to express their often-opposing positions, Twitter users simultaneously engaged in face-work to manage the interpersonal dimensions of their communication. Providing a micro-analysis of two case study examples, I highlight some of the relationally-oriented discourse-pragmatic strategies employed by Twitter users in interaction with others. One instance shows how a dismissal of the other user's perspectives leads to increased aggression, while the other instance offers insights into how users might signal their willingness to engage in a civil exchange, despite opposing stances.

Although rare among group-living primates, infanticide by females has been reported in several chimpanzee, Pan troglodytes, populations. We examined 13 infanticidal attacks over 47 years at Gombe National Park, Tanzania to evaluate three adaptive hypotheses. (1) Exploitation of the infant as a food resource – by eating a vulnerable neonate, attackers gain calories that may be important during periods of food scarcity or energetic stress. (2) Resource competition – Gombe females concentrate their foraging in overlapping core areas and dominance rank influences foraging success. By killing the infant of a female with high core area overlap, the perpetrator removes a current and future competitor, improving her access to food. (3) Low cost – female chimpanzees mature and reproduce slowly, and longevity increases reproductive success. Physical aggression causes risk of severe injury or death, so females will only mount attacks when risks to the perpetrator are low. In support of hypothesis 1, females usually consumed the carcass. However, attacks were not more likely in times of resource or energy scarcity. In support of hypothesis 2, females attacked others with whom they shared core areas, but attacks did not cause shifts in ranging patterns. In support of hypothesis 3, one or more attackers always outranked the victim, the attacks often involved coalitions and victims usually lacked kin support. Attacks were more likely to be successful when attackers were not hindered by clinging infants and victims could not retreat. Our results provide further evidence for female competition and the adaptive value of female-led infanticide in this species.

Foreign body (FB) ingestion in dogs can threaten the animal's life and often result in an emergency surgery. The causes of pica (ingestion of non-nutritive substance) remain unexplored, although behavioral conditions including hyperactivity, impulsivity, obsessive-compulsive oral/ingestive disorders, anxiety or attachment related troubles have been implicated. Such behavioral causes of pica were investigated with two grids: Lit's owner-based questionnaire, which measures inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity, and Beata's clinical 4A grid which investigates aggression, anxiety, attachment, and autocontrols of dogs. These grids were fulfilled for 42 FB ingesting dogs and 42 pair-matched control dogs. The main results show that FB ingestion is rarely related to digestive pain (12% of cases) but is primarily of a behavioural nature (88% of cases). Total Scores from both grids are significantly different between FB and control group (Lit scores: Wilcoxon signed-rank test, W = 665.5; P = 0.007; 4A: Wilcoxon signed-rank test, W = 41; P Behavioral pathology should be assessed not only for dogs ingesting non-edible objects, but also for those shredding objects. This exacerbated oral exploration is a sufficient sign for veterinarians to consider a behavioral investigation.

In this paper, we examine the phenomenon of mimesis, i.e. the way in which people copy each other's behaviour. We focus on an understudied type of mimesis, which we define as ‘performative mimesis’. This type of mimesis tends to occur in complex participatory settings where the interactants follow a perceived ‘scripted’ form of pre-existing behaviour. Our data consists of transcripts of Chinese university ‘military trainings’, i.e. training courses organised for first year university students in China. In analysing this data we focus on expressions and speech acts through which the trainers in military trainings conventionally realise aggression associated with the script they are mimicking. Our analysis provides a systematic way to examine performative mimesis, hence filling a major knowledge gap in the field.

Sport is a place of fulfilment, dreams and pleasure. But far from these principles, there are situations where it becomes a place of violence of all kinds. In the name of performance and success, sportsmen and women suffer aggression, most often committed by the person who is supposed to protect them, namely the coach. In recent years, several sportswomen have testified and journalists have investigated. A heavy silence has been broken. Analysing the meaning of this silence is a necessary step in welcoming and taking into account what has been said.

Purpose The national prevalence of adolescent dating violence (ADV) in Canada is currently unknown. This study presents the first nationally representative Canadian data on prevalence and correlates of ADV victimization and perpetration. Methods This study analyzed data from the 2017/2018 Health-Behavior in School-Aged Children (HBSC) dataset. Youth from all 10 provinces and two territories participated. The analysis sample includes 3,711 participants (mean age = 15.35) in grades 9 and 10 who reported dating experience in the past 12 months. Youth were asked to report on physical, psychological and cyber ADV victimization and perpetration. To explore correlates of ADV, we included grade in school; gender (male, female or non-binary); race/ethnicity; family structure; immigration status; family affluence; food insecurity; and body mass index. Results We found that over one in three Canadian youth who had dated experienced and/or used ADV in the past 12 months. Specifically, past 12-month ADV victimization prevalence was 11.8% (95% CI: 10.4, 13.0) for physical aggression; 27.8% (25.8, 30.0) for psychological aggression; and 17.5% (15.8, 19.0) for cyber aggression, while perpetration prevalence was 7.3% (6.2, 9.0) for physical aggression; 9.3% (8.0, 11.0) for psychological aggression; and 7.8% (6.7, 9.0) for cyber aggression. Both victimization and perpetration were highest among non-binary youth (as compared to cisgender males and females). Overall, use and experience of ADV was greatest among youth experiencing social marginalization (e.g., poverty). Conclusions ADV impacts a substantial minority of Canadian youth, and is a serious health problem. ADV prevention programs that focus on root causes of violence (e.g., poverty) are needed.

Introduction Workplace violence is prevalent in the emergency department, putting patients and staff at risk for harm. An ED-specific standardized tool is needed to promote a consistent assessment process to strengthen documentation of escalating patient behaviors, give justification for de-escalating interventions, and reduce restraints. The purpose of this project was to design, implement, and evaluate feasibility of an ED-specific tool to help nurses proactively identify and intervene with patients’ escalating behaviors, capture better documentation of aggressive/violent patient events, and reduce restraint usage. Methods A quality improvement design was used. The Emergent Documentation Aggression Rating Tool was constructed by combining evidence-based behavioral cues for potential aggression/violence with observed behaviors and successfully implemented interventions in patients. Nurses were trained on how to use the tool to rate patients’ behaviors and take necessary action. Chart data were collected from August 2018 to December 2019 at a Midwestern suburban hospital emergency department. Chart audits and just-in-time education were conducted after implementation. Survey data were collected to evaluate nurses’ perception of the tool's usefulness. Results Use of the novel Emergent Documentation Aggression Rating Tool increased over time (67.36% in Quarter 3 2018 to 97.55% in Quarter 4 2019). After Emergent Documentation Aggression Rating Tool implementation, visual inspection of the time series indicated a decrease in percent restraints, and there was an overall increase in documented escalations de-escalations over time. The patients that escalated most frequently had diagnoses of alcohol use, suicidal ideations, pain-related complaints, or mental health issues. Conclusion The Emergent Documentation Aggression Rating Tool was feasible for emergency nurses to proactively identify and intervene with patients at risk for aggression/violence.

Background Recently, histologic grade was removed from salivary tumor nomenclature by the WHO to include disease of higher grade. One such entity, cribriform adenocarcinoma (CAC), is an aggressive group of polymorphous adenocarcinoma (PAC), with frequent nodal metastasis and locoregional recurrence. We aim to examine the biologic behavior of this disease as compared with the PAC general cohort inclusive of all subtypes. Methods A systematic review of the literature on polymorphous adenocarcinoma and cribriform adenocarcinoma was completed. A descriptive analysis was performed for the following predictor variables: nodal and distant metastasis, in addition to recurrence. The outcome variables, disease free recurrence, and disease specific survival, where plotted using Kaplan-Meier curves. Results PAC and CAC both show median age of diagnosis in the sixth decade of life and a female predominance. CAC occurs most frequently in the tongue and PAC in the palate. The 2 groups show a similar biologic behavior in regards to incidence of distant metastasis (4.1 vs 5.5%), recurrence (12.5 vs 17.8%), and death from disease (3 vs 2.7%). However, there was an increased incidence of nodal metastasis in CAC (53%) as compared with that in PAC of all subtypes (14%). Conclusions CAC exhibits more aggressive biologic behavior as compared with the PAC cohort. Although CAC is not an officially recognized entity, these tumors likely comprise a significant portion of the cases of PAC with poor outcomes and are deserving of attention and consideration for escalation in oncologic treatment.

Individuals whose threats of force are more effective, such as those with greater bodily formidability, have advantages when the social environment condones violence. This benefit shapes incentives regarding norms and preferences allowing aggressive behavior. More physically imposing people may, in particular, be likelier to approve of police use of violent tactics, one recent social flashpoint concerning attitudes to physical aggression. Archival data concerning more than 1600 respondents to the 2014 and 2018 iterations of the United States' General Social Survey confirm this hypothesis, with taller respondents (as the proxy for formidability) likelier to approve of police officers hitting male citizens in several circumstances, as well as corporal criminal-justice punishment in the form of the death penalty. Black respondents show less relationship between physical size and condoning of violent policing.

A primary approach to establishing hierarchy is through contests, in which conflicts are settled using various behavioural patterns. Although dominance ranks in a hierarchy are determined by quality-related innate factors, how the inequality of competitors is assessed and triggers the formation of a hierarchy by means of behavioural interactions remains unclear. Here, we report the sequence of aggressive behaviours that mediates the onset of hierarchy formation in eusocial bumble bee workers by continuously monitoring pairwise contests. Sequential analysis characterized the dynamics of the behavioural repertoire during hierarchy formation in Bombus terrestris; this was organized in phases associated with a divergence in dominance rank and included mutual pumping (a dorsoventral abdominal movement), bilateral physical contact and unilateral strikes. Escalated bilateral aggression served as a mutual assessment strategy and caused a rapid divergence in rank in evenly matched contests. Head butting was subsequently performed by dominants, suggesting it is a badge of higher rank. The behavioural progression was also similar in two other Bombus species despite interspecific variation in behavioural patterns. Size asymmetry reduced the duration of bilateral aggression, while age advantages over callow workers eliminated bilateral aggression. These results suggested potential roles of mutual assessment by ritualized fighting in hierarchy formation in queenless bumble bee societies.
