Most lepidopteran species are herbivores, and interaction with host plants affects their gene expression and behavior as well as their genome evolution. Gustatory receptors (Grs) are expected to mediate host plant selection, feeding, oviposition and courtship behavior. However, due to their high diversity, sequence divergence and extremely low level of expression it has been difficult to identify precisely a complete set of Grs in Lepidoptera. By manual annotation and BAC sequencing, we improved annotation of 43 gene sequences compared with previously reported Grs in the most studied lepidopteran model, the silkworm, Bombyx mori, and identified 7 new tandem copies of BmGr30 on chromosome 7, bringing the total number of BmGrs to 76. Among these, we mapped 68 genes to chromosomes in a newly constructed chromosome distribution map and 8 genes to scaffolds; we also found new evidence for large clusters of BmGrs, especially from the bitter receptor family. RNA-seq analysis of diverse BmGr expression patterns in chemosensory organs of larvae and adults enabled us to draw a precise organ specific map of BmGr expression. Interestingly, most of the clustered genes were expressed in the same tissues and more than half of the genes were expressed in larval maxillae, larval thoracic legs and adult legs. For example, BmGr63 showed high expression levels in all organs in both larval and adult stages. By contrast, some genes showed expression limited to specific developmental stages or organs and tissues. BmGr19 was highly expressed in larval chemosensory organs (especially antennae and thoracic legs), the single exon genes BmGr53 and BmGr67 were expressed exclusively in larval tissues, the BmGr27-BmGr31 gene cluster on chr7 displayed a high expression level limited to adult legs and the candidate CO2 receptor BmGr2 was highly expressed in adult antennae, where few other Grs were expressed. Transcriptional analysis of the Grs in B. mori provides a valuable new reference for finding genes involved in plant-insect interactions in Lepidoptera and establishing correlations between these genes and vital insect behaviors like host plant selection and courtship for mating. International audience; Expansion of aquaculture has increased concern over its environmental impact. The composition of effluents from intensive aquaculture is well documented, but few data on extensive aquaculture are available. During 12 draining operations, 523 water samples were collected downstream from six extensively-managed fishponds in northeastern France. Study ponds had surface areas of 2–620 ha and were managed for production of Cyprinids and Percids. Concentrations of total suspended solids, total phosphorus, and Kjeldahl nitrogen in effluents from the ponds were greatest during the final stage of draining. Loads of phosphorus were higher than those reported for effluents of more intensive aquaculture ponds in the USA, but the source of the potential pollutants was catchments and sediment rather than feeds and fertilizer. It will be necessary to reduce the water drawdown rate during the fishing stage and possibly implement other best management practices to prevent the TSS concentration from exceeding 1 g/L. Effluent phosphorus loads were higher than those reported for more intensive aquaculture ponds, but the pollutant source was catchments rather than feeds and fertilizers.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to validate a prognostic index [surgical complete response 1 (sCR1)] in patients with postchemotherapy viable nonseminomatous germ-cell tumors (NSGCT). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Data and specimens from 61 patients with normalized tumor markers and postchemotherapy viable nonteratomatous NSGCT treated in 13 institutions were collected. RESULTS: With a median follow-up of 5.4 years, the 5-year progression-free survival (PFS) rate was 65%; the 5-year overall survival (OS) rate was 72%. International audience; Using immunofluorescence, evidence of a somatostatin (SRIF)-like antigen has been found in the brain and digestive tract of rainbow trout. In the diencephalon, periventricular SRIF immunoreactive hypendymocytes are located in the region dorsal to the nucleus preopticus (NPO). SRIF immunoreactive perikarya are concentrated anterior to the NPO in the nucleus preopticus periventricularis, scattered in small cells in the nucleus lateralis tuberis (NLT) pars anterior, and in a few cells located in an unnamed nucleus in the dorsomedial hypothalamus. In the pituitary SRIF immunoreactive material is located in the neurohypophysial tissue in the proximal pars distalis. In the gut, SRIF cells have been found in the endocrine pancreas and in the gastric mucosa. Comparatively, material immunoreactive for luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone has the same distribution in the pituitary as SRIF, whereas neurophysin immunoreactivity was found in only the neurophysial tissue of the neurointermediate lobe. A few cells reacting with anti-α-endorphin were seen in the NLT in the pituitary stalk region. All the pars intermedia cells in the neurointermediate lobe react with anti-α-endorphin.

The effects of [ d -Ala 6 , Pro 9 -NEt]-LHRH (LHRH-A) alone and in combination with drugs which influence the actions of dopamine or the synthesis of catecholamines on gonadotropin (GtH) secretion and ovulation in the loach ( Paramisgurnus dabryanus ) were investigated. LHRH-A alone stimulated an increase in serum GtH levels in the loach, but was a relatively ineffective treatment for the induction of ovulation. Injection of the dopamine receptor antagonist pimozide caused a marked potentiation of the GtH-release response to LHRH-A, and combined injections of pimozide and LHRH-A were an effective treatment for the induction of ovulation. Reserpine, a drug which causes depletion of catecholamines from presynaptic terminals, also caused a marked potentiation of the GtH-release response to LHRH-A and combined treatment induced ovulation. Similarly, administration of α-methyl- para -tyrosine to block conversion of tyrosine to l -dopa, or carbidopa to block conversion of l -dopa to dopamine, potentiated the GtH-release response to LHRH-A and induced ovulation. In contrast, the use of diethyldithiocarbamate, to block conversion of dopamine to norepinephrine, failed to augment the action of LHRH-A on GtH release and ovulation. The present results provide further evidence to suggest that dopamine functions as a gonadotropin release-inhibitory factor in teleosts, and demonstrate that the use of drugs which block either the synthesis or the actions of dopamine potentiates the action of LHRH-A in teleosts.
