N16 is an active protein existing in Pinctada martensi. Our previous studies have demonstrated that N16 inhibited osteoclast differentiation in vitro. To better understand how N16 regulates osteoclast differentiation, RAW264.7 cells, a murine monocytic cell line and murine bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMMs) were adopted. Treatment of RAW264.7 cells with RANKL activated osteoclastogenesis and N16 inhibited the formation of multinucleated osteoclasts and TRAP activity. The suppression occurred at the early stage of osteoclastogenesis. Moreover, we found that N16 inhibited PU.1 and MITF expressions, mirroring the inhibition of RANK expressions, indicating that N16 inhibited RANK expression by down-regulating the expressions of MITF and PU.1, thus preventing osteoclastogenesis.

The recognition and classification of the multi-channel microseismic waveform are important for mine hazard prediction. It is widely used to design the corresponding waveform feature for recognition and classification of the microseismic waveform by hand. The process of designing features manually is arduous and the results of recognition and classification are not ideal. In this paper, we propose a method combining Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (DCNN) with Support Vector Machine (SVM) for identifying the microseismic waveform automatically. We constructed a DCNN structure to train the optimal weight model named the DCNN-Model. The DCNN-Model is used as a tool for extracting features from multi-channel waveforms. After combining the extracted features, we used SVM to classify multi-channel waveforms. We compared the outputs of other classifiers, such as Random Forest and k-Nearest Neighbor (KNN). To extend the dataset of DCNN training and extract the essential characteristics of waveform images more accurately, we pre-process the raw data by means of filtering and de-nosing. The experiment shows that the recognition and classification method is of practical value, and the accuracy rate can reach as high as 98.18%.

The exploration of low-cost, long-term stable, and highly electrochemically active cathode catalysts is important for the practical application of microbial fuel cell (MFC). In this work, a series of the 3D hierarchical porous Co–N–C (3DHP Co–N–C) materials are designed and synthesized by a metal-organic framework ZIF-67 as a precursor and SiO2 sphere of different sizes as the hard template. The 3DHP Co–N–C-2 with 129 nm macropore exhibits excellent ORR performance in 0.1 M KOH solution with a half-wave potential of 0.80 V vs. RHE and superior durability than Pt/C (20%) due to the specific macropore-mesopore-micropore structure that exposes a large number of active sites and accelerates the electrolyte transport and oxygen diffusion. The MFC with 3DHP Co–N–C-2 as the cathode catalysts shows excellent performance with a maximum power density of 426.9 ± 7.87 mW m−2 and favorable durability after 50 d of operation. In addition, 16s rDNA results reveal the presence of different dominant electrogenic bacteria and different abundance of important non-electrogenic bacteria in the anode biofilm in MFCs using cathode catalysts with different ORR activity. And 3DHP Co–N–C-2 was found to be beneficial to the synergistic effect of electrogenic and non-electrogenic bacteria. This study explores electrocatalysts in terms of both electrocatalytic activity and anode microorganisms, providing new and comprehensive insights into the power generation of MFC.

Root length density (RLD) is an essential parameter for modeling crop growth and root uptake in soil-plant systems. However, it is challenging to measure and monitor under field conditions. Several RLD models contain many parameters that are built with the essential data obtained by some destructive sampling methods, such as the soil drilling and excavation methods, and thus they have limited application. Linear, polynomial, power, exponential and logarithmic models are commonly used to describe the RLD distribution, but it is not clear whether different models can simulate RLD profiles and the most suitable model for RLD distribution under soil salt stress. Therefore, the comparison of five winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) RLD distribution models under salt stress were conducted using RLD data that was obtained from the two field experiments in 2014 and 2015 based on the minirhizotron and digital image processing techniques, and a new simulation method, log-normal model was proposed in this study. The results showed that among the five common models, the exponential model had the highest coefficient of determination (R2) for RLD distribution simulation in soil, with the average R2 was 0.926, but the model could not accurately fit RLD in all soil depths, and it is especially meaningless above 10 cm soil layers. Compared with the five common models, the proposed log-normal model was the most suitable for fitting the observed RLD distributions under soil salt stress in different winter wheat growth with an average R2 of 0.986, and had a better describes the distribution of roots in soils. The results indicated that the proposed log-normal model was the most optimal for fitting the observed RLD distribution in saline soils.

Based on novel topological considerations, we postulate a gauge symmetry for living cells and proceed to interpret it from a consistent Eastern perspective: the li organization principle. In our framework, the reference system is the living cell, equipped with general symmetries and energetic constraints standing for the intertwined biochemical, metabolic and signaling pathways that allow the global homeostasis of the system. Environmental stimuli stand for forces able to locally break the symmetry of metabolic/signaling pathways, while the species-specific DNA is the gauge field that restores the global homeostasis after external perturbations. We apply the Borsuk-Ulam Theorem (BUT) to operationalize a methodology in terms of topology/gauge fields and subsequently inquire about the evolution from inorganic to organic structures and to the prokaryotic and eukaryotic modes of organization. We converge on the strategic role that second messengers have played regarding the emergence of a unitary gauge field with profound evolutionary implications. A new avenue for a deeper investigation of biological complexity looms. Philosophically, we might be reminded of the duality between two essential concepts proposed by the great Chinese synthesizer Zhu Xi (in the XIII Century). On the one side the li organization principle, equivalent to the dynamic interplay between symmetry and information; and on the other side the qi principle, equivalent to the energy participating in the process-both always interlinked with each other. In contemporary terms, it would mean the required interconnection between information and energy, and the necessity to revise essential principles of information philosophy.

In recent years, resource constrained hardware makes the operating system simplicity a most crucial design criterion. The majority of research in such operating systems has focused on the reactive nature of an event-driven kernel. However, the event-based kernel may result in the latency of processing events and erroneous energy profiling. Most battery-driven wireless sensor nodes use the radio event to wake up sleeping nodes, but the radio always consumes more energy than other components during the transmission intervals. The contribution of this paper is that we present EXOS, a timer-driven operating system which can both process periodic events on time and obtain rapid responses to external signals. The system kernel can be easily ported to any other memory-constrained target platforms. EXOS is able to provide the detailed prediction of each component's energy consumption during program execution. The evaluation has demonstrated that EXOS can be practically integrated into wireless sensor networks.

Incrementally-formed, metabolically-inert tissues have been used extensively to study marine animal trophic habitat retrospectively throughout their lifetime. In this study, sequential stable isotopic values of δ13C and δ15N in eye lenses were measured to investigate ontogenetic shifts in the trophic geography of Dosidicus gigas. A total of 617 segments from 73 lenses were examined with δ13C ranging from −20.45 to −15.47‰ and δ15N ranging from 4.34 to 18.74‰. A Generalized Additive Models (GAMs) result showed significantly increased isotopes across the eye lens which significantly differed between years and sexes. Sequential increasing but a variation in δ13C and δ15N values in eye lenses suggests that D. gigas opportunistically feeds on available prey but as it grows, it becomes progressively able to consume prey from higher trophic levels, perhaps to maximize feeding success. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed squid to have significant ontogenetic differences in δ13C but not in δ15N at different growth stages. These ontogenetic isotopic changes cannot be explained solely by trophic growth and may also be due to geographic movement. The corrected standard ellipse area (SEAc) of the embryonic, paralarval, juvenile, adult and dying phases were 10.802‰, 11.552‰, 9.152‰, 4.512‰ and 4.372‰, which suggests squid in early life span live in wide areas with different isotopic baseline values, but adult squid forage in the same habitat and become more specialized on particular prey. There were high and medium isotopic overlaps between the two consecutive stages for before juvenile and after juvenile, respectively, which reflect the squid nursery and foraging strategy. The lack of isotopic overlap between embryo and adult squid suggests that maternal squid have different trophic and spatial ecology compared with their offspring.

An increasing number of applications that use virtual reality technology have appeared in the classroom recently. Augmented reality (AR) uses humanized and interactive operations to allow students to learn from a total immersion experience. The market for keyboard- and mouse-based gaming is gradually being replaced by real-time interactive and sensory games. The application of AR technology can be seen in a variety of areas such as news, travel, sports, and commercials in which tangible and exciting experiences occur. Educators and technical developers are beginning to exploit the capabilities of AR technologies to enable new forms of learning in various fields. AR uses virtual objects that simulate a real environment and, if it can integrate image recognition and detection technology, its influence in gaming and education could be powerful. This study develops an AR system and tries to determine its advantage and drawbacks.

To determine the potential effects of climate change on crop phenological development and productivity, an integrated analysis was conducted based on the observed climatic and phenological records of Northeast China from 1992 to 2012. A set of quality assurance procedures, including repeated record checks, agro-meteorological station selection, internal consistency checks, temporal outlier checks, spatial outlier checks, and interpolation of missing data, were designed and applied to the phenology datasets of spring maize and paddy rice. Our results indicated that almost all phenological dates of spring maize and paddy rice became increasingly delayed from 1992 to 2012. The duration of the growing season was prolonged, particularly for the grain-filling stage (GS3). The prolonged growing season was beneficial to productivity. For spring maize, the average precipitation during GS3 decreased at a rate of 27.46 mm/decade, and the annual accumulated temperature over 10°C increased at a rate of 31.07°C/decade. Farmers initiatively adjusted crop cultivars and selected drought-resistant crops to cope with the challenges of drought.

The proform of the WF146 protease, an extracellular subtilase produced by thermophilic Bacillus sp. WF146, matures efficiently at high temperatures. Here we report that the proform, which contains an N-terminal propeptide composed of a core domain (N*) and a linker peptide, is intrinsically able to mature via multiple pathways. One autocatalytic pathway is initiated by cis-processing of N* to generate an autoprocessed complex N*-I(WT), and this step is followed by truncation of the linker peptide and degradation of N*. Another autocatalytic pathway is initiated by trans-processing of the linker peptide followed by degradation of N*. Unlike most reported subtilases, the maturation of the WF146 protease occurs not only autocatalytically but also hetero-catalytically whereby heterogeneous proteases accelerate the maturation of the WF146 protease via trans-processing of the proform and N*-I(WT). Although N* acts as an intramolecular chaperone and an inhibitor of the mature enzyme, the linker peptide is susceptible to proteolysis, allowing the trans-processing reaction to occur auto- and hetero-catalytically. These studies also demonstrate that the WF146 protease undergoes subtle structural adjustments during the maturation process and that the binding of Ca(2+) is required for routing the proform to mature properly at high temperatures. Interestingly, under Ca(2+)-free conditions, the proform is cis-processed into a unique propeptide-intermediate complex (N*-I(E)) capable of re-synthesis of the proform. Based on the basic catalytic principle of serine proteases and these experimental results, a mechanism for the cis-processing/re-synthesis equilibrium of the proform and the role of the linker peptide in regulation of this equilibrium has been proposed.

Taibus County, Inner Mongolia, China, lies in a farming-pastoral ecotone, where severe wind erosion and various aeolian sand hazards are prevalent and fixed and semi-fixed sand dunes occur frequently. This study was conducted to investigate the relationships between sand transportation rate and wind speed for the fixed and semi-fixed sand dunes based on field measurements. The annual quantity of soil erosion by wind was estimated using meteorological wind data. The results indicated that the sand transportation rate in Taibus County in 2000 was 57.38 kg cm−1 year−1 for the semi-fixed dunes and 4.56 kg cm−1 year−1 for the fixed dunes. The total duration of erosive winds covered 12.5% of the time of the year, and spring posed the highest potential of sand transportation. Wind with low speed (≤ 17 m s−1) and high frequency plays a dominant role in sand transportation, while strong wind (≥ 17 m s−1) with low frequency significantly enhanced the sand transportation. Erosive wind speed, directions, and frequency were three crucial dynamic factors influencing sand hazards in the farming-pastoral ecotone. The dominant factors intensifying sand and dust storms in Taibus County might be related to the favorable wind condition in combination with the durable drought, which led to land desertification and vegetation degradation.

Single-stage input-queued (IQ) switches are attractive for implementation of high performance routers because they require no speedup in the used memory. It has been shown that IQ switches can provide 100% throughput under admissible traffic when using maximum-weight matching schemes or iterative maximal-weight matching schemes with a speedup of two or more. These different approaches require either high computation complexity or high memory costs that can make them infeasible. Therefore, there is a need for low-complexity and fast matching schemes that provide high throughput under several admissible traffic patterns, including those with nonuniform distributions, without recurring to speedup nor multiple iterations. In this paper, we introduce the concept of captured frame and apply it to matching schemes. As a result, we propose two weightless matching schemes, one based on round-robin selection, called uFORM, and the other based on random selection, called uFPIM. We analyze the throughput improvement achieved by uFPIM, and show that these matching schemes provide high throughput under a variety of admissible traffic patterns, including those with nonuniform distributions, when using a single iteration and no speedup. Furthermore, we study the scalability of the captured-frame concept in matching schemes for memory-space-memory multiple-stage Clos-network switches, and show the achieved high switching performance and low implementation complexity.

Na 5 Eu(MoO 4 ) 4 and Na 5 Eu(WO 4 ) 4 are two good stoichiometric host luminescent materials having high concentrations of Eu 3+ . The effect of hydrostatic high pressure on their luminescent spectra has been investigated. The emission spectra of Na 5 Eu(MoO 4 ) 4 and Na 5 Eu(WO 4 ) 4 were measured at pressures up to 40 kbar and 80 kbar, respectively, using a high pressure microspectroscopic system in conjunction with a gasketed diamond anvil cell at room temperature. The red shift of the emission lines and energy levels under high pressure have been measured. According to crystal field theory, the pressure dependence of the crystal field parameters have been deduced from the experimental data.
