In 1932, seven burials were discovered on a Texas plantation that was originally the site of a 17th-century Caddo Indian village. Of the seven excavated graves, one set of remains (an adult male) was notably buried in a manner inconsistent with traditional Caddoan burial practices and has long been purported to be the remains of Sieur de Marle (a member of the French explorer La Salle's last expedition). Diary accounts of La Salle's expedition scribe report that Sieur de Marle died along a river near an Indian village during a trek to Canada to find help for colonists left behind at the ill-fated Fort St. Louis. Additionally, two lead projectiles recovered from the grave were ballistically analyzed and determined to be consistent with ammunition used in 17th-century weaponry. In the 1980s, anthropologists requested access to the remains for study, but the skull was missing. Cranial measurements recorded in 1940 and 1962 (by two independent anthropologists) were used to investigate the ancestry of this individual; and the Giles-Elliot (G-E) discriminant function was calculated to be 18.1, within the Anglo-European range. Dietary isotope testing on non-cranial skeletal elements determined that this unknown male's diet was rich in animal/marine protein sources, which differs appreciably from Caddo Indian populations of that time period. In order to genetically assess this individual's biogeographic ancestry and to provide further support that this individual is of European descent, mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequencing was performed using the Applied Biosystems™ Precision ID mtDNA Whole Genome Panel. mtDNA sequencing of multiple sections from two different long bones yielded compiled results consistent with either Haplogroup H or R, both predominantly European mtDNA haplogroups. Further anthropological calculations were conducted using cranial measurements, FORDISC™ software, and discriminant function analysis. Two-way, four-way, and multigroup discriminant function analyses further classify this set of unidentified remains as being White (European) in origin, with posterior probabilities of 0.999, 0.881 and 0.986, respectively. Combined with historical records of Sieur de Marle's death, as well as overlays of historical and contemporary maps which demonstrate that the plantation site aligns with Joutel's diary accounts of de Marle's burial, these collective results support that these remains are of a European male and may possibly belong to this prominent member of La Salle's expedition team.

In this study, we evaluate the effect of strong sediment/bedrock impedance contrasts on soil amplification in Boston, Massachusetts, for typical sites along the Charles and Mystic Rivers. These sites can be characterized by artificial fill overlying marine sediments overlying glacial till and bedrock, where the depth to bedrock ranges from 20 to 80 m. The marine sediments generally consist of organic silts, sand, and Boston Blue Clay. We chose these sites because they represent typical foundation conditions in the City of Boston, and the soil conditions are similar to other high impedance contrast environments. The sediment/bedrock interface in this region results in an impedance ratio on the order of ten, which in turn results in a significant amplification of the ground motion. Using stratigraphic information derived from numerous boreholes across the region paired with geologic and geomorphologic constraints, we develop a depth-to-bedrock model for the greater Boston region. Using shear-wave velocity profiles from 30 locations, we develop average velocity profiles for sites mapped as artificial fill, glaciofluvial deposits, and bedrock. By pairing the depth-to-bedrock model with the surficial geology and the average shear-wave velocity profiles, we can predict soil amplification in Boston. We compare linear and equivalent-linear site response predictions for a soil layer of varying thickness over bedrock, and assess the effects of varying the bedrock shear-wave velocity (VSb) and quality factor (Q). In a moderate seismicity region like Boston, many earthquakes will result in ground motions that can be modeled with linear site response methods. We also assess the effect of bedrock depth on soil amplification for a generic soil profile in artificial fill, using both linear and equivalent-linear site response models. Finally, we assess the accuracy of the model results by comparing the predicted (linear site response) and observed site response at the Northeastern University (NEU) vertical seismometer array during the 2011 M 5.8 Mineral, Virginia, earthquake. Site response at the NEU vertical array results in amplification on the order of 10 times at a period between 0.7–0.8 s. The results from this study provide evidence that the mean short-period and mean intermediate-period amplification used in design codes (i.e., from the Fa and Fv site coefficients) may underpredict soil amplification in strong impedance contrast environments such as Boston.

We demonstrate that the pyrrhotite that commonly occurs as inclusions in diamonds is capable of carrying strong and stable remanent magnetizations. This suggests that with suitable samples, it may be possible to use such inclusions to obtain information about the geomagnetic field, such as the paleointensity, during key intervals of geologic time. The pyrrhotite inclusions examined here exhibit a strong and pronounced anisotropy of magnetic remanence that is coupled to the crystal structure of the diamond. While this anisotropy of remanence may complicate efforts to obtain paleointensity data, we propose that it may provide a valuable way to uniquely identify individual diamonds that contain even minute inclusions of pyrrhotite.

Duplicate records of the Cobb Mountain Subchron were obtained from two holes (Holes 1063B at 33°41.204′N, 57°36′W and 1063C at 33°41.181′N, 57°36′W) drilled in a sediment drift at Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 1063 on the northeast Bermuda Rise. We sub-sampled the cores from both holes using U-channels (up to 1.5 m long samples with 2×2 cm cross-section) focusing on continuous sampling through the late Matuyama interval containing the Cobb Mountain Subchron. Results of standard progressive alternating field demagnetization experiments reveal that these sediments generally have a stable characteristic component after removal of a low-coercivity drilling overprint. Additional discrete samples (∼7 cm 3 oriented cubes) used in progressive thermal demagnetization studies display similar behavior. By taking duplicate sets of U-channels, we were able to identify and remove several measurement artifacts, such as edge effects that affect measurements made near the ends of the U-channel samples. The upper normal-to-reverse polarity transition was not obtained because of a coring gap or an interval of coring deformation. After removing measurement artifacts, the records from the two holes were stacked to obtain a composite record. Virtual geomagnetic poles (VGPs) computed from the composite record follow a path through the central Pacific during the lower polarity transition, very similar to VGP paths from Cobb Mountain Subchron records from other sites around the world. Furthermore, the VGPs cluster near southern Africa early in the reversal process and then group in a nearly antipodal patch in the north Pacific late in the reversal. Taken together, these records indicate that the transitional field remained nearly dipolar through the polarity reversal, or at least during the beginning and end of the reversal when the field was dominated by an axial dipole tilted about 20–40° to the spin axis. If a tilted dipole is an inherent part of the initiation and ending of a reversal, it may help explain why many sediment recorders, which are thought to smooth the field, record antipodal VGP paths through many reversals.

Adenosine-enhanced ischemic preconditioning extends the protection of ischemic preconditioning by both significantly decreasing infarct size and significantly enhancing postischemic functional recovery.The effects of adenosine-enhanced ischemic preconditioning on necrosis and apoptosis were investigated in the sheep heart using models of stunning (15 minutes regional ischemia, 120 minutes reperfusion) and ischemia-reperfusion (30 and 60 minutes regional ischemia, 120 minutes reperfusion). Ischemic preconditioned hearts received 5 minutes regional ischemia, 5 minutes reperfusion before ischemia. Adenosine-enhanced ischemic preconditioned hearts received a 10 mmol/L adenosine bolus (10 mL) through the left atrium coincident with ischemic preconditioning. Adenosine hearts received a 10 mmol/L bolus (10 mL) of adenosine. Regional ischemic hearts received no pretreatment.Minimal apoptosis (45 per 3,000 myocytes) was observed in the stunning models but was significantly increased with ischemia-reperfusion in regional ischemic hearts after 30 minutes (p0.05 versus ischemic preconditioning, adenosine, or adenosine-enhanced ischemic preconditioning) and in adenosine and ischemic preconditioned hearts after 60 minutes ischemia (p0.05 versus adenosine-enhanced ischemic preconditioning). DNA laddering was apparent after 60 minutes ischemia in regional ischemia, adenosine, and ischemic preconditioning but not in adenosine-enhanced ischemic preconditioned hearts.Adenosine-enhanced ischemic preconditioning significantly ameliorates necrosis and apoptosis in the regional ischemic blood-perfused heart.

The Cobb Mountain Subchron is one of the few short polarity intervals for which transition records have been obtained both from a wide geographical distribution and from different types of paleomagnetic recorders. These records exhibit VGP paths that are remarkably similar. Given the wide geographic distribution of these sites, the similarity in VGP paths is most simply interpreted as the presence of very large scale, if not dipolar, symmetries in the transitional fields. Only the records from western California and the Lau Basin exhibit VGP paths that are markedly different from the others. New dates for the Punaruu lavas suggest that they recorded a new geomagnetic cryptochron rather than the Cobb Mountain [Singer, B.S., Hoffman, K.A., Chauvin, A., Coe, R.S., 1999. Dating transitionally magnetized lavas of the late Matuyama Chron: Toward a new 40 Ar / 39 Ar timescale of reversals and events. J. Geophys. Res. 104, 679–693]. This new age indicates a revised correlation of some of the other California records whose ages agree better with the Punaruu cryptochron. A re-examination of the Lau Basin records reveals that much of the difference between these and the other records results from a bias introduced when the paleomagnetic data were smoothed. Reanalysis of these records shows that the Lau Basin VGP paths are very similar to those obtained from western Pacific, and the North Atlantic.

The Suva Marl (Fiji) provides a rare opportunity to integrate Early Pliocene biostratigraphic, magnetostratigraphic and chronostratigraphic data. We present new paleomagnetic data that extend the previously reported magnetostratigraphy [P. Rodda, I. McDougall, R.A. Cassie, D.A. Falvey, R. Todd, J.A. Wilcoxon, Isotopic ages, magnetostratigraphy, and biostratigraphy from the Early Pliocene Suva Marl, Fiji, Geol. Soc. Am. Bull. 96 (1985) 529–538] of the Suva Marl down section, and suggest a revision of the original correlation with the geomagnetic polarity time scale (GPTS). 40 Ar 39 Ar laser incremental-heating analyses of mineral separates from the interbedded tuffs yield refined age constraints for previously reported K Ar dates for the Suva Marl polarity reversals. The new dates and the new magnetostratigraphic data are most consistently interpreted as supporting the revised Early Pliocene polarity time scale [W.A. Berggren, D.V. Kent, C.C. Swisher III, M.P. Aubry, A revised Cenozoic geochronology and chronostratigraphy, in: W.A. Berggren, D.V. Kent, M.P. Aubry, J. Hardenbol (Eds.), Geochronology, Time Scales and Global Stratigraphic Correlation, Soc. Econ. Paleontol. Mineral. Spec. Publ. 54 (1996) 129–212]. The ages of the Suva Marl reversals derived from the 40 Ar 39 Ar dates provide a revised direct calibration of the early Pliocene GPTS, bringing it in synch with those calibrations produced by orbital tuning of Milankovitch cycles (astronomical time scale).

Stoopes and Sheridan have mapped a volcanic debris avalanche of Nevado de Colima which has an exceptionally long runout (120 km) and low fall-height to length ratio (H/L = 0.04). We present paleomagnetic results from this volcanic debris avalanche deposit which provide evidence that this avalanche was emplaced at elevated temperatures. The majority of samples, collected from lithic clasts in the volcanic debris avalanche deposit, exhibit two-component remanent magnetizations with a low-temperature component (25–350°C) which is well grouped about the geomagnetic field direction at Colima and a high-temperature component (350–580°C) which is randomly oriented. Although the temperature of the deposit most likely varied with distance from the volcanic source and the thickness of the deposit, our results suggest an emplacement temperature of approximately 350°C at intermediate distances (18–26 km) from the source. In order for the rock clasts (20–40 cm diameter) to be heated to these temperatures, the avalanche was most likely the results of a magmatic, Bezymianny-type eruption. The mixing of hot, juvenile gases with the clasts provides an explanation for the high degree of fluidization of this material, as evidenced by the long runout of this avalanche deposit.

One aim of this study was to determine the incidence of new radiographic pulmonary abnormalities during hospitalization after cardiac surgery. Another aim was to determine if such abnormalities are more common among patients who had left internal mammary artery (LIMA) grafting. The predictive value of radiographic abnormalities for clinically important pulmonary morbidity was also determined. The anteroposterior chest radiographs of 152 patients obtained by portable equipment were evaluated to determine the incidence of new postoperative radiographic pulmonary abnormalities such as atelectasis, consolidation, infiltrate, and pleural effusion. Clinically important pulmonary morbidity was defined as a delay in tracheal extubation or discharge from the hospital because of a pulmonary reason. Among the 89 patients who had LIMA grafting and left pleurotomy, there was an 88% incidence of left-sided pulmonary abnormalities; a 73% incidence of left-sided atelectasis; and a 55% incidence of left-sided effusion. Among the 63 patients who had saphenous vein grafting only and/or valvular surgery, the respective incidences were 68%, 54%, and 35%, which were lower (P less than or equal to 0.05) than those in the patients who had LIMA grafting. There was no significant difference in abnormalities between the saphenous vein grafting and the valvular surgery groups. The 35% incidence of left-sided pleural effusion when LIMA grafting and pleurotomy were not performed was unexpectedly high. There was no association between radiographic abnormalities and age, the duration of cardiopulmonary bypass, and the duration of aortic occlusion, indicating that cardiopulmonary bypass was not a primary etiology of these radiographic abnormalities.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Paleomagnetic records of the Matuyama-Brunhes polarity reversal obtained recently from the northern, equatorial and southern latitudes of the Atlantic sector display a distinct symmetry with respect to the Equator. The virtual geomagnetic pole (VGP) paths from the mid-latitude sites in the northern and southern hemispheres (DSDP Site 609 and Core V16-58) are nearly coincident, tracking northward through the Americas. The VGP path from the equatorial site (ODP Site 664) tracks northward through eastern Asia, nearly antipodal to the other two paths. Modeling results indicate that superimposing an h 1 3 geometry onto a reversing axial dipole explains the sense of equatorial symmetry exhibited by these three records. These results are consistent with the bulk of the data available from other records of this polarity transition, suggesting that the transitional VGPs during this reversal tend to fall along two distinct longitudinal bands. The grouping of transitional VGPs suggests that there is a strong geographical control over the reversal process. An apparent correlation between the longitudinal bands of transitional VGPs and the location of the major flux concentrations in the radial component of the historical geomagnetic field at the core-mantle boundary [1] suggests that the processes which cause these flux concentrations may have influenced the geometry of the Matuyama-Brunhes transitional field.

In many patients with peripheral vascular disease, conventional arteriograms are not adequate to make proper preoperative decisions. In the past, these inadequate studies led to surgical exploration of vessels and intraoperative angiography to determine operability. Such efforts prolonged operating time and potentially had adverse effects on amputation levels. Recently, intra-arterial digital subtraction angiography (IDSA) has provided an excellent means to further evaluate these patients preoperatively. We presently have 30 patients in whom IDSA supplemented routine aortography and runoff studies. When standard angiographic studies were considered inadequate, the catheter was positioned appropriately and IDSA was obtained. Inadequate lower extremity distal runoff in 23 patients and no proximal or distal runoff in seven patients prompted the IDSA. The IDSA study yielded further information on all patients, and 26 of 30 patients underwent successful bypass operation. In all 17 patients having femoropopliteal or femorotibial bypass, the IDSA was confirmed by an intraoperative (after bypass) angiogram. Nine patients had inflow procedures, and operative findings corroborated the IDSA. Two patients refused surgery and two patients were not candidates for revascularization. The IDSA study provided an accurate "road map," eliminated unnecessary vessel exploration, saved vital operative time, and prevented compromise of potential amputation levels.

A left ventricular aneurysm developed in 3 patients sustaining blunt chest injury. Evidence of an acute myocardial infarction on the electrocardiogram and enzyme analysis prompted cardiac catheterization, which revealed total occlusion of the left anterior descending coronary artery in 2 of the 3 patients. Ventricular aneurysmectomy was performed in each patient. A review of the literature revealed 32 previously reported patients with left ventricular aneurysm caused by blunt trauma. Clinical features, catheterization or autopsy findings, and outcome are examined.

Leg 94 of the Deep Sea Drilling Project has provided a unique set of paleomagnetically dated cores, taken along a N-S transect in the North Atlantic. High deposition rates in the sediments, combined with the palaeomagnetic ages, have enabled existing planktonic foraminiferal zonations to be tested and a new zonation for the mid- to high latitudes to be erected. The PL zonation of Berggren (1973, 1977) is shown to be adequate as far north as 41°N, although both the LAD's ofGlobigerina nepenthes andGloborotalia margaritae occur earlier than in tropical regions. North of 41°N these two species have very diachronous LAD's, even though they are common during their range in the northern sites. The new zonation for the mid to high latitude North Atlantic is based on the FAD ofG. margaritae, FAD ofG. puncticulata, LAD ofG. cf. crassula, LAD ofN. atlantica, FAD ofG. inflata and FAD of sinistrally coiled encrustedN. pachyderma.

Largemouth bass ( Micropterus salmoides ), when starved for 1 day, almost totally abstain from eating toad ( Bufo americanus and Bufo woodhousei ) tadpoles. However, there is a positive relationship between bass hunger levels and the acceptability of Bufo larvae as food items. With experience, there is a decrease in the number of toad tadpoles engulfed (taken into the mouth), and that actually consumed by the bass, while the number of larvae expelled (spat out) increases. Bass strongly prefer Hyla crucifer tadpoles to B. americanus larvae, and learn to distinguish between the two species. These results agree with the hypothesis that the schooling behaviour found in B. americanus tadpoles functions, at least in part, as a deterrent to predation.
