Abstract: International audience; This paper deals with fault detection and isolation (FDI) in complex embedded wired communication networks. The considered faults are soft faults which do not prevent the communication, but may evolve into hard faults, i.e. short or open circuit. A novel FDI method based on power line communication (PLC) transmission systems is proposed. In these PLC systems, the transmission coefficients between the source and each receiver are estimated for communication purposes using orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). Health indicators and residuals are computed by comparing the online estimated transmission coefficients with the reference coefficients. A methodology for dealing with complex networks, such as bus networks, is proposed. It is based on the decomposition of the network into several Y-shaped sub-networks. Each of these sub-networks is monitored to detect the presence of a fault. The FDI method is first validated using real data extracted from a Y-shaped network test bench. Then, the proposed approach is validated on a more complex network using realistic simulated data.

Abstract: International audience; In this work, we propose an optimization scheme based on a multi-objective Genetic Algorithm (GA) for the design of orthogonal filter banks for speech compression. A parameterization is adopted to assure that the resulting filter banks satisfy perfect reconstruction and have at least two vanishing moments. We search for a parameter set that optimizes the coding gain and the frequency selectivity. As the objectives are conflicting, we investigate the solution that realizes the best compromise between the objectives criteria using the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm (NSGAIII). Experimental results have shown that the optimized filter banks provide a significant gain in coding performances when comparing with the Daubechies orthogonal filter banks for test speech signals.

Abstract: International audience; Development of multifunctional and high-performance silicone aerogel is highly required for various promising applications. However, unstable cross-linking structure and poor thermal stability of silicone network as well as complicated processing restrict the practical use significantly. Herein, we report a facile and versatile ambient drying strategy to fabricate lightweight, wide-temperature flexible, super-hydrophobic and flame retardant silicone composite aerogels modified with low-content functionalized graphene oxide (FGO). After optimizing silane molecules, incorporation of γ-aminopropyltriethoxysilane functionalization is found to promote the dispersion stability of GO during the hydrolysis-polymerization process and thus produce the formation of unique strip-like co-cross-linked network. Consequently, the aerogels containing ∼2.0 wt% FGO not only possess good cyclic compressive stability under strain of 70% for 100 cycles and outstanding mechanical reliability in wide temperature range (from liquid nitrogen to 350 °C), but also display excellent flame resistance and super-hydrophobicity. Further, the optimized silicone/FGO aerogels display exceptional thermal insulating performance superior to pure aerogel and hydrocarbon polymer foams, and they also show efficient oil absorption and separation capacity for various solvents and oil from water. Clearly, this work provides a new route for the rational design and development of advanced silicone composite aerogels for multifunctional applications.

Abstract: International audience; Pancreatic β-cell expansion and functional maturation during the birth-to-weaning period plays an essential role in the adaptation of plasma insulin levels to metabolic needs. These events are driven by epigenetic programs triggered by growth factors, hormones, and nutrients. These mechanisms operating in the neonatal period can be at least in part reactivated in adult life to increase the functional β-cell mass and face conditions of increased insulin demand such as obesity or pregnancy. In this review, we will highlight the importance of studying these signaling pathways and epigenetic programs to understand the causes of different forms of diabetes and to permit the design of novel therapeutic strategies to prevent and treat this metabolic disorder affecting hundreds of millions of people worldwide.

Abstract: International audience; This work describes the preparation of ternary bismuth ferrite oxide nanoparticles (Bi2Fe4O9 NPs) with an enzyme mimetic activity for dopamine (DA) qualitative and quantitative detection. Bi2Fe4O9 NPs were prepared using a facile, low cost, and one-pot hydrothermal treatment. The chemical composition, morphology, and optical properties of Bi2Fe4O9 nanozyme were characterized using different techniques such as Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction pattern (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA), dynamic light scattering (DLS), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) imaging, FESEM-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), UV–vis absorption, and fluorescence emission spectroscopy. Bi2Fe4O9 NPs were utilized to catalyze the oxidation of a typical chromogenic peroxidase substrate, 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB), to form the blue-colored oxidized product (oxTMB), in the presence of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). All reactions occurred in acetate buffer solution (pH 3.5) to generate hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and the kinetics were followed by UV–vis absorbance at 654 nm. The steady-state kinetic parameters were obtained from the Michaelis-Menten equation and exhibited a good catalytic efficiency of Bi2Fe4O9 NPs as enzyme mimetics. Michaelis–Menten constant (Km) values were estimated as 0.07 and 0.73 mM for TMB and H2O2, respectively. The presented method is efficient, rapid, cost-effective, and sensitive for the colorimetric detection of dopamine with a linear range (LR) from 0.15 to 50 μM and a detection limit (LOD) of 51 nM. The proposed colorimetric sensor was successfully applied for the detection of different concentrations of dopamine in spiked fetal bovine serum (FBS) and horse serum (HS) samples. It is anticipated that Bi2Fe4O9 nanozyme holds great potential in biomedical analysis and diagnostic applications of dopamine-related diseases.

6. BM-Seg: A new bone metastases segmentation dataset and ensemble of CNN-based segmentation approach

Abstract: International audience; A B S T R A C TIn recent years, Machine Learning approaches (ML) have shown promising results in addressing many tasks inmedical image analysis. In particular, the analysis of Bone Metastases (BM) has attracted considerable interestfrom both the medical and computer vision communities due to its critical and challenging aspect. Despitethe research efforts, the detection of BM is still an open problem, mainly due to the lack of available datasets.This is due to two main obstacles: (i) the enormous time required for data collection and annotation, and(ii) privacy constraints. To overcome these challenges, we propose BM-Seg, a new dataset for segmenting BMfrom CT-scans. Our BM-Seg dataset consists of 1517 CT images from 23 patients where BM and bone regionswere labeled by three radiologists. BM-Seg is constructed to cover the diversity of bone metastases in termsof location, organ and severity.We also propose a new CNN-based approach to segmentation of BM, presenting two main contributions.First, we introduce Hybrid-AttUnet++, a new Unet++ derived architecture with dual decoders that performssegmentation of BM and bone regions simultaneously. Second, we use an ensemble of trained HybridAttUnet++ models (EH-AttUnet++) to optimize segmentation performance. Our experiments show that theEH-AttUnet++ architecture achieves better performance compared to state-of-the-art approaches for variousevaluation metrics. The purpose of this work is to provide a benchmark dataset with new state-of-the-artperformance in bone metastasis segmentation. This will facilitate further research in this area and help to putautomatic detection and segmentation of bone metastases into practice.

Abstract: International audience; Mixed Integer Linear Programs (MILPs) are usually NP-hard mathematical programming problems, which present difficulties to obtain optimal solutions in a reasonable time for large scale models. Nowadays, metaheuristics are one of the potential tools for solving this type of problems in any context. In this paper, we focus our attention on MILPs in the specific framework of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), where the determination of a score of technical efficiency of a set of Decision Making Units (DMUs) is one of the main objectives. In particular, we propose a new hyper-matheuristic grounded on a MILP-based decomposition in which the optimization problem is divided into two hierarchical subproblems. The new approach decomposes the model into discrete and continuous variables, treating each subproblem through different optimization methods. In particular, metaheuristics are used for dealing with the discrete variables, whereas exact methods are used for the set of continuous variables. The metaheuristics use an indirect representation that encodes an incomplete solution for the problem, whereas the exact method is applied to decode the solution and generate a complete solution. The experimental results, based on simulated data in the context of Data Envelopment Analysis, show that the solutions obtained through the new approach outperform those found by solving the problem globally using a metaheuristic method. Finally, regarding the new hyper-matheuristic scheme, the best algorithm selection is found for a set of cooperative metaheuristics ans exact optimization algorithms.

8. An efficient cobalt-nickel phosphate positive electrode for high-performance hybrid microsupercapacitors

Abstract: International audience; Flexible energy storage devices play significant role in wearable and portable electronics. Herein, a cobalt-nickel phosphate (CoNiP2O7) composite was synthesized on conductive carbon nanotubes (CNTs) substrate by facile one-step electrochemical deposition method, forming a binder-free CoNiP2O7@CNTs positive electrode for microsupercapacitors (MSCs). Combined with a CNTs substrate on the opposite side of interdigitated electrodes, a CoNiP2O7@CNTs//CNTs hybrid MSC device was assembled. It displayed good electrochemical performance with a largest areal capacitance of 20.9 mF·cm−2 at 0.08 mA·cm−2 and an energy density of 2.9 μWh·cm−2. To construct a self-powered solar cell energy storage system, the proposed MSC device was utilized for energy storage and further provided power for red light-emitting diode (LED), forming natural energy collection-conversion-storage-utilization system. The results of this study offer a simple design route for flexible energy storage devices.

Abstract: International audience; DNA-based aptamers are widely employed as bioreceptors, owing to their tuneable affinity and specificity towards their targets. The use of peptide nucleic acids (PNAs) has instead proven challenging for this purpose, due to the absence of selection methods for the independent discovery of suitable receptors and due to the difficult mimicry of established DNA-based ones. Despite that PNAs exceed homologous DNA or RNA in terms of complementary base pairing, they can fail to reproduce alternative modes of binding because of their different structural features. The remarkable stability and charge distribution of PNAs could be beneficial to produce sensing bioreceptors, especially in the development of electronic devices such as field-effect transistor-based (FET) biosensors. We hereby report for the first time a high-affinity PNA aptamer for cardiac Troponin I (cTnI), a biomarker of acute myocardial infarction, able to interact with this specific protein in the picomolar range. The PNA aptamer was immobilized onto a graphene-based FET (gFET) transducer, and its ability in the direct detection of cTnI was compared with that of a DNA-based one of the same sequence. Similar dissociation constants were recorded for both receptors in 0.01 × PBS, as well as comparable detection limits of 6.0 ± 1.0 pg mL-1 (PNA aptamer) and 3.3 ± 0.7 pg mL-1 (DNA aptamer). Apart from the non-trivial demonstration that a PNA can behave as an aptamer, the tested receptor proved to be more consistent upon working in more complex biological matrices.

Abstract: International audience; Distracted driving is one of the main causes of deaths and injuries in the world. Monitoring driver behaviors through Driver Action Recognition (DAR) contributes significantly to building safer transportation systems. However, in naturalistic driving settings, this task is complex and challenging because of numerous difficulties, such as high illumination variation and cluttered and dynamic background. In this paper, we introduce a novel hard attention network that highlights the most pertinent driving-scene information while filtering out irrelevant data. Specifically, only local discriminative salient regions are exploited through a hard attention mechanism. The experimental results indicate that our approach significantly enhances DAR performance. We evaluated our network on three diverse state-of-the-art datasets recorded in real-world conditions: it achieves up to 95.83% in terms of safe driving recognition and up to 99.07% in terms of distraction detection. The proposed approach outperforms the soft attention-based DAR not only in detection and recognition performance but also in computation complexity by 38.71% less runtime. Abstract: International audience; Research on micro-supercapacitors remains one of the most important activities in the area of electrochemical energy storage for powering smart and miniaturized electronic devices. Here we design an asymmetric micro-supercapacitor (A-MSC) combining sputtered vanadium nitride film (VN) and electrodeposited hydrous ruthenium oxide (hRuO2) film. Taking advantage of their complementary electrochemical potential windows in 1 M KOH electrolyte, the A-MSC achieves a cell voltage up to 1.15 V, associated to high specific capacitance values for the device (≈ 100 mF cm−2). The energy density of this asymmetric VN / hRuO2 micro-supercapacitor reaches 20 µWh cm−2 at a power density of 3 mW cm−2. Taking benefit from the asymmetric configuration, a 5-fold enhancement factor in energy density is demonstrated for the VN / hRuO2 asymmetric micro-supercapacitor as compared to symmetric VN / VN and hRuO2 / hRuO2 microdevices.

Abstract: International audience; Clustering is inherently a process of exploratory data analysis. It has attracted more attention recently because much real-world data consists of multiple representations or views. However, it becomes increasingly problematic when dealing with large and heterogeneous data. It is worth noting that several approaches have been developed to increase computational efficiency, although most of them have some drawbacks: (1) Most existing techniques consider equal or static weights to quantify importance across different views and samples, so common and complementary features cannot be used. (2) The clustering task is performed by arbitrary initialization without caring about the rich structure of the joint discrete representation, and thus poorly executed. In this paper, we propose a novel approach called “Auto-Weighted Binary Multi-View Clustering Via Deep Initialization” for large-scale multi-view clustering based on two main scenarios. First, we consider the distinction between different views based on the importance of samples, and therefore apply a dynamic learning strategy for the automatic weighting of views and samples. Second, in the context of initializing binary clustering, we develop a new CNN feature and use a low-dimensional binary embedding by exploiting the efficient capabilities of Fourier mapping. Moreover, our approach simultaneously learns a joint discrete representation and performs direct clustering using a constrained binary matrix factorization; the optimization problem is perfectly solved in a unified learning model. Experimental results conducted on several challenging datasets demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed approach over state-of-the-art methods in terms of accuracy, normalized mutual information, and purity.

Abstract: International audience; Understanding the morphological changes to the electrodes during electrochemical processes is important to many fields. These morphological changes often lead to dendrite formation and significant heat generation that can be detrimental to the process, especially the performance and lifetime of batteries. In situ infrared thermometry and microscopy are used to study the evolution of temperature profiles during the microscale electrodeposition of copper from copper sulfate. Under certain conditions, the growth front of the deposit receded and the fastest growing dendrites would suddenly stop growing. Analysis of physicochemical, temperature, and current changes show that many dynamic phenomena are correlated and associated with localized pH changes that change the chemistry of electrodeposition and potential drops occurring across the electrodes that alter the transport around dendrites.

Abstract: International audience; Temperature-dependent photoluminescence (PL) and surface photovoltage (SPV) measurements were carried out to detect radiative and non-radiative transitions on InGaN/GaN quantum well (QW) blue light-emitting device (LED). The emissions, peaking at 3.03 eV and 2.89 eV, were present in both PL and SPV spectrum and shifted with the temperature in a decrease-increase-decrease manner; the so-called S-shaped behavior between 30-150 K. Remarkably, the shift continued with an increase in energy (blue shift) and finally saturated for a temperature above 150 K. The first variation below 150 K was explained by the composition fluctuation of In atom in the InGaN MQW layer. In contrast, the second significant shift in peak energy was caused to the localization effect, around 60 meV. The degree of localized (σ) value agreed with the activation energy of thermal quenching of PL intensity. A strong localization effect was also attributed to the sub-bandgap trap level in the quantum well and originated negative capacitance in admittance spectroscopy measurement.

Abstract: International audience; Electrochemical biosensors are one of the best choices for the sensing of biomarkers due to their high performance, low cost, miniaturization, and wide applicability. However, like for any sensing process, electrode fouling affects severely the analytical performance of the sensor, such as sensitivity, detection limit, reproducibility, and overall reliability. Fouling arises from nonspecific adsorption of different components present in the sensing medium and in particular in complex biofluids such as full blood. The complex composition of blood where biomarkers are present at extremely low concentrations compared to the rest of the fluid composition makes electrochemical biosensing challenging. Direct biomarker analysis within full blood samples remains however central for the future development in electrochemical-based diagnostics. Herein, we aim to provide short discussion of past and more recent strategies and concepts employed to diminish background noise due to surface fouling and overcome current hurdles for the implementation and commercialisation of electrochemical-based biosensors for medical diagnostics of protein biomarkers in a point of care format.

Abstract: International audience; AbstractThe present study reports the impact of structural parameters on optoelectronic properties of InGasb/GaSb based quantum well structures (Qws). The laser diodes are designed to operate at 2.3 μm at 300 K. Numerical calculations of the emission wavelength, optical and modal gain of TE mode in InGaSb/GaSb laser diode structure have been carried out for various well material compositions, well thickness, number of quantum wells and temperature. The optical confinement factor and threshold current density are also simulated and reported. The calculations were performed using the 8-bands k.p model. For an injected carrier concentration of 1.56 × 1018 cm−3 at 300 K, peak gain value of the order of 1400 cm−1 is reached and a modal gain of 94 cm−1 can be obtained. A threshold current density around 3 kA/cm2, is expected to be obtained through optical losses of about 50 cm−1. The results show that InGaSb/GaSb quantum wells are appropriate for mid-infrared lasers operating at 300 K.

Abstract: International audience; The rapidly increasing power demand, downsizing of power electronics and material specific limitation of silicon has led to development of AlGaN/GaN heterostructures. Commercial GaN power devices are best available for radio frequency (RF) and high voltage switching applications. Emerging Al x Ga 1-x N channel based heterostructures are promising to enhance the limits of next generation high voltage GaN power switching devices. In this work, we report on the study of electrical performance of AlGaN channel HEMTs-on-Silicon using various Al content. The fabricated devices exhibited outstanding buffer breakdown electric field above 2.5 MV/cm considering the submicron thin heterostructures grown on silicon substrate. Furthermore, we also experimentally demonstrate high temperature operation of fabricated AlGaN channel HEMTs.

Abstract: The line graph of a graph G has one node per each edge of G, two of them being adjacent only when the corresponding edges have a node of G in common. In this work, we consider the problem of finding the minimum number of edges to delete so that the resulting graph is a line graph, which presents an interesting application in haplotyping of diploid organisms. We propose an Integer Linear Programming formulation for this problem. We compare our approach with the only other existing formulation for the problem and explore the possibility of combining both of them. Abstract: International audience; We present an analytical and numerical study of the possibility of existence of surface localized modes, the so-called Tamm states, in a one-dimensional (1D) comb-like phononic crystal (PnC). The structure is made out of periodic array of stubs of lengths d2grafted along a waveguide and separated from each other by a tube of length d1. We show the existence of surface modes for the semi-infinite structure. In particular, when one considers two complementary semi-infinite systems obtained by cutting the infinite one into two parts, we obtain one surface mode per gap induced by the surface of the two complementary systems. Furthermore, we demonstrate that these surface modes can be detected from the maxima and minima of the transmission spectrum, when the finite structure is grafted vertically along a homogeneous acoustic waveguide. That means that one can observe experimentally this type of modes for acoustic waves in slender tubes. These results may find many practical applications in noise control and highly sensitive PnC sensors. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract: International audience; We consider the first closed-loop separation control experiment on an Ahmed body using a robust, model-based strategy called "sliding mode control" (SMC). The goal is to reduce and further maintain the aerodynamic drag of the square-back Ahmed body flow at Re h = 9 × 10 4 (based on the body height). This study also investigates the practical feasibility of this approach which shows a great promise for industrial applications. The flow is manipulated by a slotted jet placed on the top trailing edge, combined with a predefined angle direction, and sensed by a drag balance. Base pressure and lift measurements are also obtained in real-time. The interaction between the air jet actuator and the mean near-wake flow are depicted by means of Particle Image Velocimetry. In order to compare this closed-loop strategy we first present two open-loop ones. Continuous blowing is initially used to directly influence the recirculation area and hence achieve a reduction in the drag. Approximately a drag reduction of 8% is accomplished making this approach the "optimal case" control strategy. However, because steady blowing mechanisms lead to the highest energy consumption scheme, this strategy will only serve as the first open-loop control reference. The second open-loop strategy involves three periodic forcing frequencies, St A = 0.0765, 0.135 & 0.405. The influence of these frequencies on the near-wake, and its further drag modification, will be further examined. The proposed sliding mode control (closed-loop strategy) is applied to the same Ahmed body configuration and compared to the open-loop cases. It will be designed on the basis of a simplified input-output model which was recently defined for another flow control application. Last, a second experiment is conducted so to show the disturbance rejection of the controller, corroborating the robustness and efficiency of this control approach. Its limitations and difficulties on an experimental setup are also discussed. SMC is able to reduce and maintain the drag to a desire set-point regardless external flow perturbations. Our control strategy was recently used in another context (flow reattachement on a wing) with the same robustness. These successes make guess it is applicable to multiple experimental and industrial contexts.

The control is based on the universal approximation properties of artificial neural networks (ANNs) applied on a certain class of homogeneous nonlinear functions. The adaptation laws for the DNNs parameters are obtained with the application of the Lyapunov stability theory and the homogeneity properties of the approximated nonlinear system. The stability analysis of the closed loop system with the proposed controller is presented. The estimation error in the approximation of the uncertain homogeneous functions is considered in the stability analysis. The performance of the controller is illustrated by means of a numerical simulation of a homogeneous model.

Abstract: This paper discusses some issues related with the design of a bank of interval observers for uncertain switched systems, in which several sources of uncertainty are considered: parametric uncertainties, unknown disturbances, measurement noise, and unknown switching signal. More specifically, this paper focuses on analyzing the interval estimation accuracy when changes of active mode induce non-positivity of the interval state estimation errors. In particular, it is shown that by combining two types of interval observers, referred to as local and global, the accuracy and reliability of the estimation can be improved. The properties of the obtained so-called glocal observer are investigated and illustrated by means of numerical simulations. Abstract: International audience; This work addresses the problem of robust control of the continuous bioreactor-namely the chemostat-using an observer-based approach. We design a control law aiming to regulate the growth of a certain species and to stabilize the output-a growth-associated product of interest-in a prescribed level. In addition, to avoid the single-species dogma (which takes only one species into account for control design), we add to the microbial community unknown species competing for the limiting substrate. Finally, this control architecture is able to maintain the productivity, despite this competing heterogeneity (or biodiversity) of the community.

Abstract: International audience; Although Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have been shown to be highly effective in image classificationtasks, designing their architecture to achieve optimal results is often challenging. This process is time consuming, requires significant effort and expertise, and is complicated by the large number of hyperparameters. Toaddress this problem, in this work we propose an approach that reduces human intervention and automaticallygenerates the best CNN design. Our approach uses a variant of Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), calledParticle Swarm Optimization without Velocity (PSWV), to speed up convergence and reduce the numberof iterations required to determine the optimal CNN hyperparameters. We developed a novel strategy todetermine the updated position of each particle using a linear combination of the best position of the particleand the best position of the swarm without relying on the velocity equation. Our algorithm harnesses thepower of the variable-length encoding strategy to represent particles within the population, thereby providingswift convergence towards the best architecture. We evaluate our proposed algorithm against several recentalgorithms in the literature by using nine benchmark datasets for classification tasks and comparing it to 27other algorithms, including state-of-the-art ones. Our experimental results show that our proposed method,pswvCNN, is able to quickly find effective CNN architectures that provide comparable performance to the bestcurrently available designs, indicating its significant potential.

Abstract: International audience; This work reports information on the transience of hole doping in epitaxial graphene devices when nitric acid is used as an adsorbent. Under vacuum conditions, desorption processes are monitored by electrical and spectroscopic means to extract the relevant timescales from the corresponding data. It is of vital importance to understand the reversible nature of hole doping because such device processing can be a suitable alternative to large-scale, metallic gating. Most measurements are performed post-exposure at room temperature, and, for some electrical transport measurements, at 1.5 K. Vacuum conditions are applied to many measurements to replicate the laboratory conditions under which devices using this doping method would be measured. The relevant timescales from transport measurements are compared with results from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy measurements, with the latter performed at ambient conditions and accompanied by calculations of the spectra in the Reststrahlen band.

Abstract: Artificial Intelligence; International audience; Osteoporosis is characterized by decrease of bone mineral density and alterations of the bone microarchitecture, leading to bone fragility and an increased risk of fractures. Discrimination between osteoporotic and healthy subjects using X-ray images presents a major challenge for medical image analysis and classification. This work introduces a new approach based on multifractal texture analysis for the characterization of the trabecular bone microarchitecture to distinguish between Control Subjects (CS) and Osteoporotic Patients (OP). The proposed method enables a description of both local and global regularity and roughness of the trabecular bone on radiographic images. To this end, the multifractal spectrum is exploited to extract new texture attributes and reveal bone microarchitecture changes due to osteoporosis. To assess the proposed approach effectiveness, tests were carried out for the classification of two populations (CS and OP) using a logistic regression model. A classification rate of 98.01% was reached showing that the proposed approach presents a promising potential as a complementary tool for osteoporosis diagnosis.

Abstract: International audience; Detecting proteins via surface assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (SALDI-MS) method is still highly challenging, and only few examples of nanomaterials have been demonstrated to perform such detection so far. In this study, carbon nanowalls (CNWs), vertically aligned graphene sheet-based materials, presenting specific morphology, dimensions, and boron doping levels have shown improved performances for both qualitative and quantitative detection of Cytochrome C under optimized experimental conditions. Boron doped carbon nanowalls (B-CNWs) with a [B]/[C] ratio of 5000 ppm and growing time of 4 h have shown the best performance in terms of signal intensity and reliability. Then, the detection of ricin, a ribosomal-inhibiting protein (RIP) classified as category B bioterrorism agent by CDC (Centre of Disease and Control and Prevention), was performed. For the first time, direct SALDI-MS detection of ricin B chain was reported without tedious sample preparation steps or database interrogation, and results were obtained within few minutes and a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.5 pmol/μl was obtained. Thanks to the introduction of galactosamine residues on B–CNW, we were able to selectively detect ricin B chain protein in complex media such as serum and soft drinks with enhanced signal intensity. B-CNWs are not toxic and are adaptable to any commercial MALDI-TOF mass spectrometer, showing their great potential as SALDI based materials.

Abstract: International audience; Nowadays, breast and cervical cancers are respectively the first and fourth most common causes of cancer death in females. It is believed that, automated systems based on artificial intelligence would allow the early diagnostic which increases significantly the chances of proper treatment and survival. Although Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have achieved human-level performance in object classification tasks, the regular growing of the amount of medical data and the continuous increase of the number of classes make them difficult to learn new tasks without being re-trained from scratch. Nevertheless, fine tuning and transfer learning in deep models are techniques that lead to the well-known catastrophic forgetting problem. In this paper, an Incremental Deep Tree (IDT) framework for biological image classification is proposed to address the catastrophic forgetting of CNNs allowing them to learn new classes while maintaining acceptable accuracies on the previously learnt ones. To evaluate the performance of our approach, the IDT framework is compared against with three popular in-cremental methods, namely iCaRL, LwF and SupportNet. The experimental results on MNIST dataset achieved 87 % of accuracy and the obtained values on the BreakHis, the LBC and the SIPaKMeD datasets are promising with 92 %, 98 % and 93 % respectively.

Abstract: International audience; Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting has drawn great attention of scientists as an appreciated approach for converting solar energy into renewable fuels. So far, semiconductor-based photoanodes are considered as promising candidates for conventional light harvesters due to their chemical robustness, earth abundance and adequate band gap. However, single semiconductor usually suffers from short diffusion length, fast recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, difficulty to accelerate the interfacial charge transfer, poor electrical conductivity and sluggish oxygen evolution reaction kinetics, which limit their efficacy in PEC devices. Transition metal carbides, nitrides and carbonitrides (MXenes) is a new class of two-dimensional materials that has brought new opportunities to design synergistic systems for energy storage and conversion because of their interesting characteristics including rich interlayers groups, functional terminal groups and tunable optical and electronic properties. Therefore, decoration of semiconductors by MXene nanolayers or hybridization of MXene with semiconductor materials may facilitate to overcome the common obstacles including carriers’ separation efficiency, and poor electrochemical properties. MXene/semiconductor hybrid materials can boost the photogenerated carriers’ separation and transport and importantly revealed a significant performance as photoanodes. In fact, the new concept based on exploitation of MXene properties is crucial to generate enough space for accommodating charges (depletion zone, Schottky barriers) and enhance the electrical conductivity. Herein, an overview on MXene/semiconductor photoanodes current challenges and promising technologies for effective water oxidation is provided.

Abstract: International audience; With the progress of the technology, the presence of transient faults (e.g. bit-flipping errors) in cache memories becomes a challenge, especially in embedded real-time systems. These are mission critical systems that are often subject to both fault-tolerant and real-time constraints.To reduce the impact of transient faults, hardware protection mechanisms are usually proposed. However, these mechanisms introduce too much pessimism in the computation of the worst-case execution time of a task, decreasing the overall system performance.In this paper, we propose a methodology to evaluate and reduce the vulnerability of hard real-time applications to soft errors in IL1 cache memories.We use static analysis tools to analyze a binary program and compute the overall vulnerability of its instructions. Then, we propose to reduce this vulnerability by invalidating some cache blocks at specific instants during the execution, thus forcing vulnerable instruction blocks to be reloaded from higher layers of memory. Since adding invalidation points will likely increase the WCETs of the tasks, we perform a static analysis to guarantee that the application deadlines are respectedFinally, we analyze how our methodology can be combined with hardware protection mechanisms as ECC memories, and we evaluate the performance on a set of benchmarks.

Abstract: International audience; Electrochemical supercapacitors as energy storage devices are trademarks in current electronic and industrial applications, as they are the source of top-notch power output. Supercapacitors supply fast power output, which is suitable to cover the energy demand of future electronic devices. Electrode materials of supercapacitors play an essential role in the electrochemical process of charge storage and determine the final device's cost and capacitive performance. Consequently, much attention has been paid to developing supercapacitor electrode materials to enhance energy storage performance and fulfill the high demand of current electronic devices. Electrode materials based on metal compounds such as metal oxides, metal nitrides, and metal carbides have been considered ideal for highly efficient electrochemical supercapacitors. Recently, many efforts have been devoted to metal nitride-based electrodes and their diverse compositions as they possess higher electrical conductivity, better corrosion resistance, electrochemical stability, and chemical reactivity. Electrode material, as well as the synthesis process of the electrode and assembling design of the final device, significantly impact the capacitive performance of the contrived electrochemical supercapacitor. This review gives a brief overview of supercapacitor configuration with methods for electrode synthesis and focuses mainly on the stable metal nitride components and their application as electrode materials for supercapacitors. Each element of the periodic table group has unique properties for electrochemical reactions, and stable metal nitrides can be synthesized with only a few elements of the periodic table. The electrochemical properties of metal nitride electrodes for supercapacitors depend upon the selected group of parent metals. In the conclusion of this review, we highlighted the recent trends and future aspects of metal nitride-based electrodes in energy storage devices.

Abstract: International audience; This paper presents a flexible and wearable (on-body) dual band antenna operating in two Industrial, Scientific and Medical (ISM) frequency bands. The central frequencies selected are equal to 2.45 GHz and 5.8 GHz. In order to make the antenna suitable for Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN) applications, it is fabricated on a flexible biopolymer called cellulose laurate (CL). The proposed antenna, that has been designed and optimized on ANSYS HFSS, is realized using a process based on copper adhesive tape and laser structuring. The characterization of the antenna in terms of reflection coefficient, gain and radiation patterns shows a good agreement with the simulation data. Compared to state-of-the-art antennas, the investigated solution demonstrates competitive results. The proposed antenna also features stable performance under bending conditions and the estimated specific absorption rate (SAR) is well below the limits defined by international standards. All these results suggest that the proposed antenna is very well suited for potential wearable applications and is a step towards fully green electronics.

Abstract: International audience; A mechanical system under strongly nonlinear potential and dissipative forces, with nonlinear nonstationary perturbations having zero mean values, is studied. Proposing a special construction of Lyapunov function, the conditions are found, under which the perturbations do not influence the asymptotic stability of the trivial equilibrium position of the system. These conditions include the requirements on asymptotic stability of the disturbance-free system and the relations of the nonlinearity orders between potential and dissipative forces. The developed approach is extended to the problem of monoaxial stabilization of a rigid body.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper, we analyzed the sensing performance of the multifunctional surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensors based on bimetallic film (Ag/Al2O3), and a hybrid nanostructure of BaTiO3 and 2D nanomaterials (Ti3C2T, black phosphorus and BlueP/MoS2 heterostructure). Using excitation light at 633 nm, we numerically analyze performance such as angular sensitivity, peak sensitivity, figure of merit, and electric field strength. The study shows the proposed biosensor design exhibits a highest sensitivity of 504 deg/RIU with a 320% improvement over the conventional SPR sensor reported so far on similar 2D nanomaterials, and can also maintain a good quality SPR curve. The results of different proposed and optimized nano-configurations show that the improved angular sensitivity of 120%, 60%, 290% and 80% for BaTiO3, Ti3C2T, Black phosphorus and BlueP/MoS2, respectively, for a change in the refractive index (RI) of the sensing medium of RIU. Similarly, the variation in field intensity at the sensing interface further confirms the high sensitivity obtained for our proposed SPR biosensor. Therefore, our proposed design would be practically suitable for biosensing with higher performance with the available fabrication technologies.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper, an event-triggered observation scheme is considered for a perturbed nonlinear dynamical system connected to a remote location via a communication channel, which can only transmit a limited amount of data per unit of time. The dynamical system, which is supposed to be globally Lipschitz, is subject to bounded state perturbations. Moreover, at the system’s location, the output is measured with some bounded errors. The objective is to calculate estimates of the state at the remote location in real-time with maximum given error, whilst using the communication channel as little as possible. An event-triggered communication strategy is proposed in order to reduce the average number of communications. An important feature of this strategy is to provide an estimation of the relation between the observation error and the communication rate. The observation scheme’s efficiency is demonstrated through simulations of unicycle-type robots.

Abstract: International audience; Thermal characterization of GaN-based components is an important and challenging issue that requires the measurement of the self-heating temperature of the channel, the metal contact surface and the substrate with high accuracy. This paper points out that all these thermal parameters can be measured by combining confocal Raman spectroscopy and micro-Raman thermometers. To prove these assertions, thermal resistance and Thermal Boundary Resistance (TBR) were accurately estimated experimentally. In addition, temperature measurements with TiO2 and CeO2 micro-Raman thermometers were carried out to determine which is more accurate and reliable in measuring the surface self-heating temperature of these components.

Abstract: International audience; A large number of methods have been developed to characterize the adhesion of a thin film to a substrate. Among them, tape test is still one of the most popular methods. Acoustic waves and especially ultra-high frequency acoustic waves are also sensitive to adhesion defects as they affect the way acoustic waves are reflected at such an interface. In this work, we first prepare a series of identical thin-film samples with a variable adhesion at the interface between the film and its substrate. To modulate adhesion of some samples, an ultrathin gold layer is deposited on the substrate before thin-film sputtering. Si+ ion implantation is also used to reinforce locally gold adhesion. The samples are then characterized using two much different techniques: picosecond acoustics (PA) for measuring thickness and acoustic reflection coefficient (R) at the interface and tape test to have an independent evaluation of the adhesion through the peeled area (P). On the samples series, R is found to vary from −0.46 the expected value for a perfectly bonded Ni/Si interface to almost −0.83 not far from −1 which corresponds to delamination. An excellent correlation is found between R and P: high |R| value samples are easily peeled off and P is large. That work demonstrates the capability of PA to perform adhesion test in a totally non-destructive manner and furthermore locally.

Abstract: International audience; In order to improve the solar cell efficiency, quantum multi-wells have been implanted into the intrinsic region of the structure. We can absorb the photons that have a lower energy than the bandgap energy. In this work, physical and optical phenomena that influence the efficiency of the solar cell have been modeled, simulated and optimized. In addition, the effects of indium (x) and nitrogen (N) concentrations, the quantum wells number (nQWs) and the quantum well width (Lw) on structural stability, bandgap energy, external quantum efficiency and the solar cell output parameters were studied. For indium and nitrogen concentrations x = 35%, y = 3.5% respectively, a quantum well width LW = 8 nm and quantum wells number nQWs of 50, we have obtained a strain (ε) of about 1.77%. The obtained external quantum efficiency (EQE) in this case is about 86.23%, while the efficiency (η) is 33.60%. We can improve this work by using other materials.

41. Electromechanical properties of sodium bismuth titanate thin films

Abstract: International audience; Lead-free piezoelectric sodium bismuth titanate (BNT) films are promising candidates for actuators applications as an alternative to lead zirconate titanate films. We focused in this work on the growth and characteristics of BNT films deposited by sputtering on silicon substrates with LaNiO3 electrodes. The films are amorphous previous to post-annealing treatments. We studied the influence of the crystallization state and film thickness on their electromechanical properties. Namely, we evaluated the piezoelectric properties, reduced elastic modulus, and hardness. BNT films fully crystallized (f-c) in the desired perovskite structure, without second phase, after post-annealing at 650°C. Relative permittivity grew from 60 to 540 for an amorphous vs. a f-c film and the d33eff coefficient improved with film thickness to 60 pm/V for a 450 nm thick film. The BNT film's mechanical properties increased with film crystallization from the amorphous structure to the f-c: 134 to 149 GPa for reduced modulus and 7 to 9 GPa for hardness. However, the film thickness did not remarkably modify the mechanical properties, yet a slight decrease for the 450 nm film was explained by previous cracking on the surface.

Abstract: International audience; Context: Literals are constant values (numbers, strings, etc.) used in the source code. Magic literals are such values used without an explicit explanation of their meaning. Such undocumented values may hinder sourcecode comprehension, negatively impacting maintenance. Relatively little literature can be found on the subject beyond the usual (and very old) recommendation of avoiding literals and preferring named constants. Yet, magic literals are still routinely found in source code. Objective: We studied literal values in source code to understand when they should be considered magic or not (i.e., acceptable). Methods: First, we perform a qualitative study of magic literals, to establish why and under which conditions they are considered harmful. We formalize hypotheses about the reasoning behind how literals are considered magic. Second, we perform a quantitative study on seven real systems ranging from small (a few classes) to large (thousands of classes). We report the literals' types (number, string, Boolean,. . .), their grammatical function (e.g., argument in a call, operand in an expression, value assigned,. . .), or the purpose of the code in which they appear (test methods, regular code). Third, we report on another study involving 26 programmers who analyzed about 24,000 literals, to understand which ones they consider magic. Finally, we evaluate the hypotheses defining specific conditions under which literals are acceptable. Results: We show that (1) literals still exist and are relatively frequent (found in close to 50% of the methods considered); (2) they are more frequent in test methods (in 80% of test methods); (3) to a large extent, they were considered acceptable (only 25% considered magic); and (4) the hypotheses concerning acceptable literals are valid to various degrees. Conclusion: We thus pave the way to future research on magic literals, for example, with tools that could help developers deciding if a literal is acceptable.

Abstract: JIF=4.384; International audience; Zero correlation zone (ZCZ) codes have been recently adopted for many communication systems based on code division multiple access (CDMA). In this paper, we focus on the use of ZCZ codes in quasi-synchronous direct-sequence (QS-DS) CDMA. To ensure Interference-free communication, spreading ZCZ codes must be carefully designed. Indeed, numerous ZCZ code constructions with various correlation properties have been proposed and studied in literature. However, most of them are not adequately designed for communication systems. Here, we aim at determining specific criteria in order to choose the suitable ZCZ code family. A new bit error rate (BER) for QS-DS-CDMA as a function of the code's even and odd periodic correlation functions (PCFs) is derived. It is shown that the adequate spreading codes are those with zero even and odd PCFs

Abstract: International audience; Cloud computing has emerged as the main paradigm for hosting and delivering computing resources as services over Internet. It provides a delivery model for computing resources at infrastructure, platform, and software levels. However, there is a plethora of cloud providers offering different resource management interfaces. Due to this diversity, the consumption, provisioning, management, and supervision of cloud resources are subjected to four key issues, i.e., heterogeneity, interoperability, integration, and portability. To cope with these issues, Open Cloud Computing Interface (OCCI) is proposed as a community-based and open recommendation standard for managing any kind of cloud resources. Currently, only runtime implementations exist for OCCI, and each one targets a specific cloud service model such as Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), or Software as a Service (SaaS). Thus, OCCI lacks an approach to model and execute different OCCI artifacts. Our approach provides a generic modeling framework coupled with a generic runtime implementation. In this article, we propose the OCCIware approach, which represents the first approach to design, validate, generate, implement, deploy, execute, and supervise everything as a service with OCCI. This approach provides OCCIware Studio, the first model-driven tool chain for OCCI. It is built around OCCIware Metamodel, which defines the static semantics for the OCCI standard in Ecore and OCL. In addition, it proposes OCCIware Runtime, the first generic OCCI runtime implementation targeting all the cloud service models (IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS). OCCIware provides a unique and unified framework to manage OCCI artifacts and, at the same time, it represents a factory to build cloud domain-specific modeling frameworks where each framework targets a specific cloud domain. OCCIware has been applied in various cloud domains and use-cases, which validate its applicability.

Abstract: International audience; This study investigates the processing of voice signals for detecting Parkinson's disease. This disease is one of the neurological disorders that affect people in the world most. The approach evaluates the use of eighteen feature extraction techniques and four machine learning methods to classify data obtained from sustained phonation and speech tasks. Phonation relates to the vowel /a/ voicing task and speech to the pronunciation of a short sentence in Lithuanian language. The audio tasks were recorded using two microphone channels from acoustic cardioid (AC) and a smartphone (SP), thus allowing to evaluate the performance for different types of microphones. Five metrics were employed to analyze the classification performance: Equal Error Rate (EER) and Area Under Curve (AUC) measures from Detection Error Tradeoff (DET) and Receiver Operating Characteristic curves, Accuracy, Specificity, and Sensitivity. We compare this approach with other approaches that use the same data set. We show that the task of phonation was more efficient than speech tasks in the detection of disease. The best performance for the AC channel achieved an accuracy of 94.55%, AUC 0.87, and EER 19.01%. When using the SP channel, we have achieved an accuracy of 92.94%, AUC 0.92, and EER 14.15%.

Abstract: Similarity and metric learning provides a principled approach to construct a task-specific similarity from weakly supervised data. However, these methods are subject to the curse of dimensionality: as the number of features grows large, poor generalization is to be expected and training becomes intractable due to high computational and memory costs. In this paper, we propose a similarity learning method that can efficiently deal with high-dimensional sparse data. This is achieved through a parameterization of similarity functions by convex combinations of sparse rank-one matrices, together with the use of a greedy approximate Frank-Wolfe algorithm which provides an efficient way to control the number of active features. We show that the convergence rate of the algorithm, as well as its time and memory complexity, are independent of the data dimension. We further provide a theoretical justification of our modeling choices through an analysis of the generalization error, which depends logarithmically on the sparsity of the solution rather than on the number of features. Our experiments on datasets with up to one million features demonstrate the ability of our approach to generalize well despite the high dimensionality as well as its superiority compared to several competing methods., Comment: Long version of arXiv:1411.2374 (AISTATS 2015), to appear in Neurocomputing. Abstract: International audience; Power system state estimation relies increasingly on PMU measurements to ef-fectively control and monitor growing and stressed transmission networks whichare also affected by transient and dynamic events. High PMU cost has moti-vated optimal PMU placement solutions but recent works have shown the effectof communication infrastructure cost in PMU configuration. In this paper,we present a new method for the design of Wide Area Measurement Systems.A topological analysis algorithm based on the Variable Neighbourhood Searchheuristic is proposed and tested in several networks, including the common IEEEtest networks and the 5804-bus Brazilian transmission system. Our results showthe flexibility, effectiveness, and scalability of the proposed methodology whencompared with recent research presented in the literature.

Abstract: International audience; We investigated electromagnetic induced transparency (EIT) resonances and bound in continuum (BIC) states in a simple mesoscopic structure made of double Aharonov-Bohm rings of lengths d1 and d2 threaded by a magnetic flux and coupled by a wire of length d0. These investigations are accomplished through an analysis of the amplitude of the transmission coefficient obtained using the Green's function method. This structure may exhibit a large band gap and an EIT resonance in the transmission spectrum without introducing any impurity in one arm of the loop. In addition, we show that the shape of the EIT resonances and the width of the band gaps can be tuned by means of the magnetic flux and the geometry of the structure. These results may have important applications for electronic transport in mesoscopic systems. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract: International audience; We investigate numerically the plasmon analogue of electromagnetic induced transparency (EIT) in a compact graphene-based waveguide coupled to two rectangular nano-cavities-like structures made out of graphene nanoribbons. The cavities are placed symmetrically on each side of the bus waveguide, giving rise to a V-like state in analogy with three level atomic systems. In this configuration, the cavities are directly coupled to the waveguide, and consequently both play the role of the bright mode. By slightly detuning the Fermi energy level of the cavities, we show the possibility of generating a narrow transparency window, that's, the plasmon induced transparency (PIT). The resonance peak occurs as a consequence of destructive interference between the cavities acting like coupled radiative oscillators. We also demonstrate that by appropriately shifting (symmetrically) the Fermi energy levels of the cavities, one could dynamically tune the resonance peak frequency. The proposed structure may help the design of highly integrated optical devices.

Abstract: International audience; In this article, we study the division of a non-laminar Savart sheet into individual jets by mean of local disturbances. We paint a precise portrait of a free non-laminar Savart sheet formed by the vertical impact of a jet on a horizontal disk, its evolution in the air and its break up.We then generate local disturbances, outside of the disk circumference, triggered by N radial triangular prisms placed directly in the non-laminar sheet. We show that, under given flow conditions and geometrical parameters for the triangular prisms, the sheet splits into individual jets. Depending on the incoming flow rate Q and on the geometry of the prism, the number of jets n can be either stable (and equal to N jets) or variable due to elastic coalescing of neighboring jets. Phase diagrams (Q, n) are obtained from experimental measurements for different geometrical parameters of triangular prisms. A semi-empirical model, which explains the generation of individual jets, is established. Finally, we characterize the droplets emitted from the non-laminar Savart sheet and from the jets in terms of diameters.
