ObjectiveTo report a case of early pregnancy loss successfully managed by hysteroscopic resection, review the literature comparing hysteroscopic resection to dilation and curettage for retained products of conception, and review potential advantages of hysteroscopic resection over dilation and curettage for management of early pregnancy loss.DesignCase report.SettingPrivate practice.PatientsOne woman with early pregnancy loss.InterventionsHysteroscopic resection using a mechanical morcellation device.Main outcome measuresComplete uterine evacuation after hysteroscopic resection as demonstrated by a normal transvaginal ultrasound and cessation of bleeding 2 weeks after surgery.ResultsThe hysteroscopic fluid deficit was 365 ml, with minimal blood loss. Products of conception were confirmed on pathologic examination. There were no intraoperative or postoperative complications. A saline infusion sonogram obtained 4 months after surgery demonstrated a normal endometrial cavity with no intrauterine adhesions.ConclusionsSurgical management of early pregnancy loss may be complicated by retained products of conception (RPOC) or intrauterine adhesion formation, which can lead to adverse fertility outcomes in the future. Hysteroscopic resection of RPOC has been associated with fewer cases of intrauterine adhesions, more cases of complete tissue removal, and earlier time to conception compared with dilation and curettage. Early pregnancy loss can also be characterized as RPOC with potentially similar benefits from hysteroscopic resection. Thus, hysteroscopic resection can be considered as an alternative surgical technique for management of early pregnancy loss. This case report demonstrates the successful application of hysteroscopic resection in a case of early pregnancy loss.

Remote spectroscopy of terrestrial ecosystems generally falls into one of two categories: UV, Visible and ShortWave InfraRed (VSWIR) methods measuring reflected solar illumination, and Thermal InfraRed (TIR) methods measuring radiation emitted from the Earth's surface. Both interpret the measured radiance with inversion algorithms that estimate surface reflectance, emissivity, surface temperatures, and the atmospheric state. However, the two regimes have traditionally used independent inversion methods. Here we present the first simultaneous inversion of the upwelling radiance spectrum from the UV through the VSWIR and the Thermal Infrared. Maximum A Posteriori estimation determines the surface and atmosphere state that is most consistent with measured radiance across the entire range. We find that the complementary information in the two intervals improves estimates of atmospheric properties, surface emissivity, and surface temperature. Posterior uncertainty is 40% lower in surface temperature and 60% in air temperature. Spurious correlations between atmospheric and surface state are also reduced, with 90% lower correlated uncertainty between total column water vapor and both surface and air temperature. Temperature-emissivity separation also improves, with a 33% reduction in correlated posterior uncertainty between the parameters. We demonstrate the method on coincident data from the Classic Airborne Visible Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS-C) operating in the VSWIR range, and the Hyperspectral Thermal Emission Spectrometer (HyTES) in the TIR range, during flights on NASA's high-altitude ER-2 aircraft. Measurements spanning 0.4 to 12 microns can improve estimates of surface and atmospheric properties, significantly advancing studies in terrestrial ecosystems, geology, agriculture, and urban management.

Study Objective To develop a new endometriosis classification system for scoring intraoperative surgical complexity and to examine its correlation with patient-reported pain and infertility. Design Multicenter study of patients treated at 3 recognized endometriosis centers. Setting Three specialized endometriosis surgical centers in Sao Paulo, Brazil and Barcelona, Spain. Patients Patients aged 15 to 45 years with histologically proven endometriosis and no history of pelvic malignancy underwent laparoscopic treatment of endometriosis. Interventions Demographic data and clinical history, including dysmenorrhea, noncyclic pelvic pain, dyspareunia, dysuria and dyschezia, were prospectively recorded. All patients were staged surgically according to the new 2021 American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists (AAGL) and revised American Society of Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) classification systems. The staging for each system was compared against a 4-level surgical complexity scale defined by the most complex procedure performed. Measurements and Main Results A total of 1224 patients undergoing surgery met inclusion criteria. The AAGL score discriminated between 4 stages of surgical complexity with high reproducibility (κ = 0.621), whereas the ASRM score discriminated between the complexity stages with poor reproducibility (κ = 0.317). The AAGL staging system correlated with dysmenorrhea, dyspareunia, dyschezia, total pain score, and infertility comparably with the ASRM staging system. Conclusion The AAGL 2021 Endometriosis Classification allows for identifying objective intraoperative findings that reliably discriminate surgical complexity levels better than the ASRM staging system. The AAGL severity stage correlates comparably with pain and infertility symptoms with the ASRM stage.

The 2017–2027 National Academies' Decadal Survey, Thriving on Our Changing Planet, recommended Surface Biology and Geology (SBG) as a “Designated Targeted Observable” (DO). The SBG DO is based on the need for capabilities to acquire global, high spatial resolution, visible to shortwave infrared (VSWIR; 380–2500 nm; ~30 m pixel resolution) hyperspectral (imaging spectroscopy) and multispectral midwave and thermal infrared (MWIR: 3–5 μm; TIR: 8–12 μm; ~60 m pixel resolution) measurements with sub-monthly temporal revisits over terrestrial, freshwater, and coastal marine habitats. To address the various mission design needs, an SBG Algorithms Working Group of multidisciplinary researchers has been formed to review and evaluate the algorithms applicable to the SBG DO across a wide range of Earth science disciplines, including terrestrial and aquatic ecology, atmospheric science, geology, and hydrology. Here, we summarize current state-of-the-practice VSWIR and TIR algorithms that use airborne or orbital spectral imaging observations to address the SBG DO priorities identified by the Decadal Survey: (i) terrestrial vegetation physiology, functional traits, and health; (ii) inland and coastal aquatic ecosystems physiology, functional traits, and health; (iii) snow and ice accumulation, melting, and albedo; (iv) active surface composition (eruptions, landslides, evolving landscapes, hazard risks); (v) effects of changing land use on surface energy, water, momentum, and carbon fluxes; and (vi) managing agriculture, natural habitats, water use/quality, and urban development. We review existing algorithms in the following categories: snow/ice, aquatic environments, geology, and terrestrial vegetation, and summarize the community-state-of-practice in each category. This effort synthesizes the findings of more than 130 scientists.

Terahertz absorption spectroscopy was employed to measure the ground state pure rotational transitions of the water isotopologue HD 18 O . A total of 105 pure rotational transitions were observed in the 0.5–5.0 THz region with ∼ 100 kHz accuracy for the first time. The observed positions were fit to experimental accuracy using the Euler series expansion of the asymmetric-top Hamiltonian together with the literature Microwave, Far-IR and IR data in the ground state and ν 2 . The new measurements and predictions reported here support the analysis of astronomical observations by high-resolution spectroscopic telescopes such as SOFIA and ALMA where laboratory rest frequencies with uncertainties of 1 MHz or less are required for proper analysis of velocity resolved astrophysical data.

This study reports the results from analyzing a number of high resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) spectra in the 2.06-μm spectral region for pure CO2 and mixtures of CO2 in dry air. A multispectrum nonlinear least squares curve fitting technique has been used to retrieve the various spectral line parameters. The dataset includes 27 spectra: ten pure CO2, two 99% 13C-enriched CO2 and fifteen spectra of mixtures of 12C-enriched CO2 in dry air. The spectra were recorded at various gas sample temperatures between 170 and 297 K. The absorption path lengths range from 0.347 to 49 m. The sample pressures for the pure CO2 spectra varied from 1.1 to 594 Torr; for the two 13CO2 spectra the pressures were ∼10 and 146 Torr. For the air-broadened spectra, the pressures of the gas mixtures varied between 200 and 711 Torr with CO2 volume mixing ratios ranging from 0.014% to 0.203%. The multispectrum fitting technique was applied to fit simultaneously all these spectra to retrieve consistent set of line positions, intensities, and line shape parameters including their temperature dependences; for this, the Voigt line shape was modified to include line mixing (via the relaxation matrix formalism) and quadratic speed dependence. The new results are compared to select published values, including recent ab initio calculations. These results are required to retrieve the column averaged dry air mole fraction (XCO2) from space-based observations, such as the Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 (OCO-2) satellite mission that NASA launched in July 2014.

Pressure-broadened line shapes in the 30013←00001 (ν1+4 ν 2 0 +ν3) band of 12C16O2 at 6228 cm−1 are reanalyzed using new spectra recorded with sample temperatures down to 170 K. High resolution, high signal-to-noise (S/N) laboratory measurements of line shapes (Lorentz air- and self-broadened half-width coefficients, pressure-shift coefficients and off-diagonal relaxation matrix element coefficients) as a function of gas sample temperatures for various pressures and volume mixing ratios are presented. The spectra were recorded using two different Fourier transform spectrometers (FTS): (1) the McMath-Pierce FTS located at the National Solar Observatory on Kitt Peak, Arizona (and reported in Devi et al., J Mol Spectrosc 2007;245:52-80) and, (2) the Bruker IFS-125HR FTS at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. The 19 spectra taken at Kitt Peak were all recorded near room temperature while the 27 Bruker spectra were acquired both at room temperature and colder temperatures (170-296 K). Various spectral resolutions (0.004–0.011 cm−1), absorption path lengths (2.46–121 m) and CO2 samples (natural and 12C-enriched) were included in the dataset. To maximize the accuracies of the various retrieved line parameters, a multispectrum nonlinear least squares spectrum fitting software program was used to adjust the ro-vibrational constants (G,B,D etc.) and intensity parameters (including Herman-Wallis terms) instead of directly measuring the individual line positions and intensities. To minimize systematic residuals, line mixing (via off-diagonal relaxation matrix elements) and quadratic speed dependence parameters were included in the analysis. Contributions from other weakly absorbing bands: the 30013←00001 and 30012←00001 bands of 13C16O2, the 30013←00001 band of 12C16O18O, hot bands 31113←01101 and 32212←02201 of 12C16O2, as well as the 40013←10001 and the 40014←10002 bands of 12C16O2, present within the fitted interval were also measured. Results from previous works and new calculations are compared to present measurements, where appropriate.

Recent warming of the Arctic has motivated assessments of methane (CH4) release from the North Slope Region of Alaska (NSRA). This study examines the contributions of thermogenic emissions from the Prudhoe Bay Oil Field (PBOF) to the elevated concentrations of atmospheric CH4 observed across the NSRA. We report high precision atmospheric measurements of CH4 and ethane (C2H6) within and downwind of the PBOF. Biogenic CH4 emissions, due to methanogenic processes within the Arctic tundra, are not co-emitted with C2H6. We show that the thermogenic gas emanating from oil and gas extraction point sources contains on average 1 mol of C2H6 for every 16 mol of CH4. We use a mass balance approach to estimate total emissions of thermogenic CH4 from two days in the summer of 2016 and find 2–5 times greater emissions than the sum of all sources in the PBOF reported to the EPA Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program in 2016. Although higher than reported, these emissions are much smaller than estimates of CH4 emissions from other oil and natural gas production areas in the US, and they make a very small contribution to total CH4 emissions from the North Slope.

We present new high accuracy measurements of the (30012)←(00001) CO 2 band near 1575 nm recorded with a frequency-agile, rapid scanning cavity ring-down spectrometer. The resulting spectra were fit with the partially correlated, quadratic-speed-dependent Nelkin-Ghatak profile with line mixing. Significant differences were observed between the fitted line shape parameters and those found in existing databases, which are based upon more simplistic line profiles. Absolute transition frequencies, which were referenced to an optical frequency comb, are given, as well as the other line shape parameters needed to model this line profile. These high accuracy measurements should allow for improved atmospheric retrievals of greenhouse gas concentrations by current and future remote sensing missions.

In this report, we extend our Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy measurements of CO2 in the ν3 region (2200–2450 cm−1, 65–75 THz) to the 18O-, and 13C-substituted isotopologues, using the JPL Bruker IFS-125HR Fourier Transform Spectrometer (JPL-FTS). High quality (S/N ∼ 2000) spectra were obtained separately for each of the 18O-, and 13C-isotopically enriched samples. The absolute wavenumber accuracies were better than 3 × 10−6 cm−1 (∼100 kHz) for strong, isolated transitions, calibrated against the highest accuracy reported CO and 16O12C16O (626) frequency measurements. The JPL-FTS performance and calibration procedure is shown to be reliable and consistent, achievable through vigorous maintenance of the optical alignment and regular monitoring of its instrumental line shape function. Effective spectroscopic constant fits of the 00011 ← 00001 fundamental bands for 16O12C18O (628), 18O12C18O (828), and 16O13C16O (636) were obtained with RMS residuals of 2.9 × 10−6 cm−1, 2.8 × 10−6 cm−1, and 2.9 × 10−6 cm−1, respectively. The observed bands encompassed 79 lines over the Jmax range of P67/R67, 47 lines over P70/R62, and 60 lines over P70/R70 for 628, 828, and 636, respectively. These results complement our recent work on the 17O-enriched isotopologues (Elliott et al., 2014), providing additional high-quality frequency measurements for atmospheric remote sensing applications.

IR spectra of trans -diazene (diimide, HN NH) have been recorded in nitrogen and argon matrices at 20 K. An IR spectrum of a mixture of trans -diazene- d 1 and - d 2 in a nitrogen matrix has also been recorded. The method for preparing pure trans-diazene has been clarified. Revised assignments are reported for these spectra. A definitive experimental assignment of the wavenumbers of normal modes the three hydrogen/deuterium isotopologues is given. Attempts were made to photoisomierize matrix-isolated trans -diazene into the elusive cis isomer. No bands for the cis isomer were found.

Video Objective To educate the minimally invasive gynecologist on the rare diagnosis of an undescended ovary and to demonstrate a laparoscopic technique for ovarian transposition to facilitate trans-vaginal oocyte monitoring and retrieval. Setting Community hospital in the suburbs of Chicago. Interventions Left ovarian transposition and ovarian drilling. Conclusion Laparoscopic ovarian transposition is a feasible, safe option to facilitate oocyte retrieval in cases of undescended ovaries.

Absolute transition frequencies were measured for a series of transitions in the (30013)←(00001) near-infrared 12C16O2 band. These measurements were referenced to a cesium atomic clock through the use of an optical frequency comb. Combined standard uncertainties as low as 18 kHz (6×10−7 cm−1) were achieved. Importantly, deviations as large as 5 MHz were observed relative to the HITRAN 2008 database. These measurements were then included in a global fit of 416 CO2 mid-infrared and near-infrared measurements each of which was absolute. The resulting spectroscopic parameters provide a series of secondary frequency standards with kHz-level uncertainties across a wide frequency range and should significantly improve spectroscopic retrieval algorithms for space-based measurements of atmospheric CO2.

Partial column-averaged carbon dioxide (CO_2) mixing ratio in three tropospheric layers has been retrieved from Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON) spectra in the 1.6 μm CO_2 absorption band. Information analysis suggests that a measurement with ∼60 absorption lines provides three or more pieces of independent information, depending on the signal-to-noise ratio and solar zenith angle. This has been confirmed by retrievals based on synthetic data. Realistic retrievals for both total and partial column-averaged CO_2 over Park Falls, Wisconsin on July 12, 15, and August 14, 2004, agree with aircraft measurements. Furthermore, the retrieved total column averages are always underestimated by less than 1%. The results above provide a basis for CO_2 profile retrievals using ground-based observations in the near-infrared region.

We observed electric quadrupole transitions in the O_2 A-band, b^(1)Σ_(g)^(+)←X^(3)Σ_(g)^(−)(0,0), in high solar zenith angle atmospheric spectra recorded with the high-resolution solar-viewing Fourier transform spectrometer at Park Falls, WI. We identified 12 ΔN=±3 transitions for the first time, including the first detection of ^(N)O-branch transitions and extended the ^(T)S-branch observations of Brault [J Mol Spectrosc 1980;80:384–8] up to N″=23. Additionally, we observed six electric quadrupole transitions of the ΔN=−1 ^(P)O-branch. These observations demonstrate the excellent sensitivity and long-term stability of the new generation of solar-viewing Fourier transform spectrometers.

We describe frequency-stabilized cavity ring-down spectroscopy (FS-CRDS), an ultraprecise refinement of conventional CRDS. We review the technique and highlight some recent studies that have utilized FS-CRDS to perform precision measurements of molecular transitions in the near-infrared. We describe system enhancements that are currently under implementation, including Pound–Drever–Hall locking and optical frequency comb-stabilization, which have the potential to reduce the uncertainty in both the absorption and frequency axes of our spectra by more than an order of magnitude. Finally, we describe high impact applications of this capability that can exploit frequency axis uncertainty at the 10 kHz level and signal-to-noise ratios exceeding 200000:1.

Frequency-stabilized cavity ring-down spectroscopy (FS-CRDS) was employed to measure over 100 transitions in the R-branch of the b^(1)Σ^(+)_(g)←X^(3)Σ^(-)_(g) (0,0) band for the rare O_2 isotopologues. The use of ^(17)O- and ^(18)O-enriched mixtures allowed for line positions to be measured for the ^(16)O^(17)O, ^(16)O^(18)O, ^(17)O_2, ^(17)O^(18)O, and ^(18)O_2 isotopologues. Simultaneous fits to the upper and lower states were performed for each isotopologue using the FS-CRDS positions supplemented by microwave, millimeter, submillimeter, terahertz, and Raman ground state positions from the literature. Positions, line intensities, pressure broadening parameters, and collisional narrowing parameters are reported for the ^(16)O^(18)O and ^(16)O^(17)O isotopologues which are based upon the present study and our earlier FS-CRDS work (Long et al. J Quant Spectrosc Radiat Transfer 2010;111:2021 [18] and Robichaud et al. J Phys Chem A 2009;113:13089 [15]). The calculated line intensities include a term for the observed Herman–Wallis-like interaction and correct a frequency-dependent error, which is present in current spectroscopic databases.

The McMath-Pierce Fourier transform spectrometer located at the National Solar Observatory (NSO) on Kitt Peak, Arizona, was used to record infrared high resolution absorption spectra of CO 2 spectra broadened by O 2 . These spectra were analyzed to measure O 2 -broadened half-width coefficients, O 2 -induced pressure-shift coefficients and speed dependent parameters for transitions in the 30013←00001 and 30012←00001 bands of 16 O 12 C 16 O located near 6227 and 6348 cm −1 , respectively. All spectra were obtained at room temperature using the long path, 6 m base path White cell available at NSO. A multispectrum nonlinear least-squares fitting algorithm employing Voigt line shapes modified to include line mixing and speed dependence was used to fit simultaneously a total of 19 spectra in the 6120–6280 cm −1 (30013←00001) and 6280–6395 cm −1 (30012←00001) spectral regions. 16 of the 19 spectra analyzed in this work were self broadened and three spectra were lean mixtures of CO 2 in O 2 . The volume mixing ratios of CO 2 in the three spectra varied between 0.06 and 0.1. Lorentz half-width and pressure-induced shift coefficients were measured for all transitions in the P(50)–R(50) range in both vibrational bands. The results obtained from present analysis have been compared with measurements available in the literature for self-, air-, oxygen- and argon-broadening. No significant differences were observed between the broadening and shift coefficients of the two bands. The N 2 -broadened half-width and pressure-shift coefficients were computed from measured air- and O 2 -broadened width and shift coefficients.

Numerous satellite and ground-based remote sensing measurements rely on the ability to calculate O_2 A-band [b^1Σ_g^+←X^3Σ_g^−(0,0)] spectra from line parameters, with combined relative uncertainties below 0.5% required for the most demanding applications. In this work, we combine new ^(16)O_2 A-band R-branch measurements with our previous P-branch observations, both of which are based upon frequency-stabilized cavity ring-down spectroscopy. The combined set of data spans angular momentum quantum number, J′ up to 46. For these measurements, we quantify a J-dependent quadratic deviation from a standard model of the rotational distribution of the line intensities. We provide calculated transition wave numbers, and intensities for J′ up to 60. The calculated line intensities are derived from a weighted fit of the generalized model to an ensemble of data and agree with our measured values to within 0.1% on average, with a relative standard deviation of ≈0.3%. We identify an error in the calculated frequency dependence of the O_2 A-band line intensities in existing spectroscopic databases. Other reported lineshape parameters include a revised set of ground-state energies, self- and air-pressure-broadening coefficients and self- and air-Dicke-narrowing coefficients. We also report a band-integrated intensity at 296 K of 2.231(7)×10^(−22) cm molec^(−1) and Einstein-A coefficient of 0.0869(3) s^(−1).

A major challenge in retrieving CO_2 concentrations from thermal infrared remote sensing comes from the fact that measurements in the 4.3 and 15 μm absorption bands (AIRS or TES) are sensitive to both temperature and CO_2 variations. This complicates the selection of absorption channels with maximum CO_2 concentration information content. In contrast, retrievals using near infrared (NIR) CO_2 absorption bands are relatively insensitive to temperature and are most sensitive to changes of CO_2 near the surface, where the sources and sinks are located. The Orbiting Carbon Observatory (OCO) was built to measure reflected sunlight in three NIR spectral regions (the 0.76 μm O_2 A-band and two CO_2 bands at 1.61 and 2.06 μm). In an effort to significantly increase the speed of accurate CO_2 retrieval algorithms for OCO, we performed an information content analysis to identify the 20 best channels from each CO_2 spectral region to use in OCO retrievals. Retrievals using these 40 channels provide as much as 75% of the total CO_2 information content compared to retrievals using all 1016 channels in each spectral region. The CO_2 retrievals using our selected channels have a precision better than 0.1 ppm. This technique can be applied to the retrieval of other geophysical variables (e.g., temperature or CH_4), or modified for other instruments, such as AIRS or TES.

High precision rotational spectra of isotopic oxygen O 2 (with O 16 or O 18 ) in its Σ g − 3 electronic ground state have been measured in selected frequency regions between 0.4 and 2.0 THz. The main isotopic species, O 2 16 , was also investigated in its first excited electronic state Δ 1 . The new data, analyzed together with previous measurements, yielded improved spectroscopic parameters.

We report frequency-stabilized cavity ring-down spectroscopy (FS-CRDS) measurements of high-J O_2 A-band magnetic dipole line parameters. Our goals were to measure intensities and line shape parameters for the primary isotopologue of O_2 in the A-band region and to understand how these quantities compare to, and build on those contained in the Hitran database. These experiments quantify line parameters of some of the weakest transitions ever observed in the laboratory. We have measured line intensities as low as 1 × 10^(−30) cm molecule^(−1). Our data extend available data in the P-branch up to J′ = 50. Additionally, we have characterized the self-broadened and air-broadened line widths and provide new J-dependent correlation functions.

The U.S. Department of Energy's National Energy Technology Laboratory, under the Office of Fossil Energy's Innovations for Existing Plants Program, carried out a comprehensive Hg research and development program for coal-fired power generation facilities since the mid-1990s. Working collaboratively with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Electric Power Research Institute, power plant operators, state and local agencies, and a host of research organizations and academic institutions, the Program identified the major factors that affect mercury speciation and capture in coal combustion flue gas and funneled this knowledge into the development of a suite of mercury control technologies for the diverse fleet of U.S. coal-fired power plants. The high performance observed during full-scale field testing has given coal-fired power plant operators the confidence to begin deploying technology. As of March 2009, more than 130 full-scale activated carbon injection systems have been ordered by the U.S. coal-fired power generators. These contracts include both new and retrofit installations and represent over 55 GW of coal-based electric generating capacity.

Objective To assess the efficacy and safety of a vaginal progesterone (P4) insert (Endometrin) for luteal support for assisted reproductive technology (ART). Design Multicenter, randomized, open-label (assessor-blinded) phase III clinical trial. Setting Twenty-five U.S. ART centers. Patient(s) A total of 1,211 ART patients randomized to three groups: Endometrin 100 mg twice daily (n = 404), Endometrin 100 mg three times daily (n = 404), and P4 90 mg 8% gel daily (n = 403). Intervention(s) In vitro fertilization and ET were performed according to site-specific protocols. The day after oocyte retrieval, Endometrin or vaginal P4 gel was begun for luteal support and continued for up to 10 weeks of pregnancy. Main Outcome Measure(s) Biochemical, clinical, and ongoing pregnancy and live birth rates. Result(s) Pregnancy rates were high and similar in all treatment groups, with biochemical rates exceeding 50%, clinical and ongoing rates ≥40%, and live birth rates at 35%–38%. The adverse event profiles were similar across groups. Conclusion(s) Pregnancy rates and live birth rates for Endometrin (twice daily and three times daily) were high and similar to those for P4 gel. The adverse event profiles for both were similar to that for P4 gel and primarily due to IVF stimulation and oocyte retrieval. Endometrin was safe and well tolerated.

Line positions and strengths of 16O13C16O (636), 16O13C18O (638) and 16O13C17O (637), and 18O13C18O (838) bands were measured using natural and 13C- and 18O-enriched samples of CO2 at room temperature. Twenty-five near infrared (NIR) absorption spectra were recorded at 0.01–0.013 cm−1 resolution with the McMath–Pierce Fourier transform spectrometer located at the National Solar Observatory on Kitt Peak, Arizona. Absorption cells with optical path lengths ranging from 0.347 m to 385 m were used with pressures ranging between 0.5 and 147 torr. Line strengths were obtained for 17 bands of (636) between 4697 and 6797 cm−1, 13 bands of (638) between 2192 and 4954 cm−1, 4 bands of (637) between 3437 and 4981 cm−1 and 7 bands of (838) between 2182 and 4888 cm−1. Band strengths and Herman–Wallis-like F-factor coefficients were determined from least-squares fits to over 2000 measured transition intensities involving 41 different bands. The observed line positions of several bands were analyzed to obtain the upper state term values and rotational constants. Five of the 18O13C18O bands and two of the 16O13C18O bands were modeled for the first time.

Frequencies for 32 P-branch transitions of the O2 A-band (b1Σ+g ← Χ3Σ-u) were measured between 12975 and 13115 cm^−1 using the frequency-stabilized cavity ring-down spectrometer located at National Institute of Standards and Technology, Gaithersburg, MD. Absolute line positions were calibrated using the hyperfine components of 39K D1 and D2 atomic transitions yielding uncertainties

A new spectroscopic database for carbon dioxide in the near infrared is presented to support remote sensing of the terrestrial planets (Mars, Venus and the Earth). The compilation contains over 28,500 transitions of 210 bands from 4300 to 7000 cm−1 and involves nine isotopologues: 16O12C16O (626), 16O13C16O (636), 16O12C18O (628), 16O12C17O (627), 16O13C18O (638), 16O13C17O (637), 18O12C18O (828), 17O12C18O (728) and 18O13C18O (838). Calculated line positions, line intensities, Lorentz half-width and pressure-induced shift coefficients for self- and air-broadening are taken from our recent measurements and are presented for the Voigt molecular line shape. The database includes line intensities for 108 bands measured using the McMath–Pierce Fourier transform spectrometer located on Kitt Peak, Arizona. The available broadening parameters (half-widths and pressure-induced shifts) of 16O12C16O are applied to all isotopologues. Broadening coefficients are computed using empirical expressions that have been fitted to the experimental data. There are limited data for the temperature dependence of widths and so no improvement has been made for those parameters. The line intensities included in the catalog vary from 4×10−30 to 1.29×10−21 cm−1/(molecule cm−2) at 296 K. The total integrated intensity for this spectral interval is 5.9559×10−20 cm−1/(molecule cm−2) at 296 K.

Line intensities, self- and air-broadened linewidths, pressure-induced shifts, and collisional narrowing coefficients were measured from 2 ⩽ J′ ⩽ 32 in the P branch of the O2 A-band (12 975–13110 cm−1) utilizing Galatry line profiles. We describe a high-precision method for measuring pressure shifting of absorption lines. The technique involves the acquisition of high-resolution spectra using a cavity ring-down spectrometer whose length is continuously locked to a frequency-stabilized reference laser over a range of sample pressures. We discuss a relatively large correction arising from the pressure-dependence of dispersion in the cavity modes, and we demonstrate pressure shifting measurements in air for transitions in the 16 O 2 A -band. Pressure shifts in the range - 0.011 to - 0.007 cm - 1 atm - 1 are reported. We measured relative positions of line centers to within 70 kHz and determined pressure shifting coefficients over a 5 kPa pressure range with relative uncertainties approximately equal to 1.0%, which constitutes a five-fold improvement over previous measurements.

We conducted two experiments that investigated a non-obvious prediction of a Level of Aspiration (LOA) model of group decision making. In both experiments, groups chose among three alternatives, A, B, and C, with C always being least preferred by all of the group members. In each experiment, by manipulating the nature of alternative C, we created two conditions differing in whether only A or only B was acceptable to all members. In support of the LOA model, groups tended to choose the alternative acceptable to all members, even when (Experiment 2) a majority of members most preferred a different alternative. Implications of the results for the LOA model are discussed in the context of social choice theory.

Previously we obtained self-broadened halfwidth and self-induced shift coefficients at room temperature for 15 near infrared CO 2 bands between 4750 and 7000 cm −1 [R.A. Toth, L.R. Brown, C.E. Miller, V.M. Devi, D.C. Benner, J. Mol. Spectrosc., 239 (2006) 243–271]. The present study expands our work on the near infrared line parameters of CO 2 to include air broadening coefficients. Here we report nearly 400 air-broadened half width and air-induced pressure shift coefficients spanning 11 different CO 2 vibrational bands in the 4750–7000 cm −1 region. Retrievals have been performed using Voigt line profiles over three distinct spectral intervals: (a) 4750–5200 cm −1 , covering the 20011 ← 00001, 20012 ← 00001, and 20013 ← 00001 Fermi Triad and three associated hot bands 21111 ← 01101, 21112 ← 01101, 21113 ← 01101; (b) 6100–7000 cm −1 , covering the 30011 ← 00001, 30012 ← 00001, 30013 ← 00001 and 30014 ← 00001 Fermi Tetrad; (c) near 6950 cm −1 for the 00031 ← 00001 overtone band. The air-broadened halfwidth and air-induced pressure shift coefficients have been modeled with empirical expressions and compared to other measurements available in the literature.

Line position, intensity and line shape parameters (Lorentz widths, pressure shifts, line mixing, speed dependence) are reported for transitions of the 30013 ← 00001 band of 16O12C16O (ν0 = 6227.9 cm−1). The results are determined from 26 high-resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio spectra recorded at room temperature with the McMath-Pierce Fourier transform spectrometer. To minimize the systematic errors of the retrieved parameters, we constrained the multispectrum nonlinear least squares retrieval technique to use quantum mechanical expressions for the rovibrational energies and intensities rather than retrieving the individual positions and intensities line by line. Self- and air-broadened Lorentz width and pressure-induced shift, speed dependence and line mixing (off-diagonal relaxation matrix elements) coefficients were adjusted individually. Errors were further reduced by simultaneously fitting the interfering absorptions from the weak 30012 ← 00001 band of 16O13C16O as well as the weak hot bands 31113 ← 01101, 32213 ← 02201, 40014 ← 10002 and 40013 ← 10001 of 16O12C16O in this spectral window. This study complements our previous work on line mixing and speed dependence in the 30012 ← 00001 band (ν0 = 6347.8 cm−1) [V.M. Devi, D.C. Benner, L.R. Brown, C.E. Miller, R.A. Toth, J. Mol. Spectrosc. 242 (2007) 90-117] and provides key data needed to improve atmospheric remote sensing of CO2.

Line positions and strengths of 16O12C18O (628), 18O12C18O (828) and 17O12C18O (728) were measured between 2200 and 7000 cm−1 using 22 near infrared (NIR) absorption spectra recorded at 0.01–0.013 cm−1 resolution with the McMath–Pierce Fourier transform spectrometer located at the National Solar Observatory on Kitt Peak, Arizona. These data were obtained at room temperature using absorption cells with optical path lengths ranging from 2.4 to 385 m; the cells were filled with natural and 18O-enriched samples of CO2 at pressures ranging from 0.54 to 252 torr. The observed line positions were analyzed to obtain the upper state band centers and rotational constants for 17 bands of 16O12C18O, 19 bands of 18O12C18O and 8 bands of 17O12C18O. The majority of the 18O12C18O and 17O12C18O bands were measured for the first time. In addition, the rotational constants for the lower states 00001, 01101e and 01101f were derived for all three species using the method of combination differences in which the averaged values obtained from the line positions of two or more bands were least-squares-fitted. Rovibrational parameters were also obtained for the 02201e, 02201f, 10002 and 10001 states of 18O12C18O. The line position analysis revealed that transitions of the levels 38 ⩽ J′ ⩽ 46 of the 11111f ← 01101f band of 18O12C18O are perturbed. Perturbed transitions were also observed for the 12212 ← 02201 band and in the high-J transitions (J′ ⩾ 49) of the 20012 ← 00001 band of 18O12C18O. Band strengths and Herman–Wallis-like F-factor coefficients were determined for 21 bands of 16O12C18O, 25 bands of 18O12C18O and 8 bands of 17O12C18O from least-squares fits to more than 3700 measured transition intensities; band strengths and line positions for 34 of these bands were obtained for the first time.

Intensity and line shape parameters which predict spectral lines with absolute accuracies better than 0.3% have been determined for transitions of the 30012 ← 00001 band of 16 O 12 C 16 O centered near 6348 cm −1 from 26 high resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio spectra recorded at room temperature with the McMath–Pierce Fourier transform spectrometer. To maximize the accuracies of the retrieved parameters, the multispectrum non-linear least squares retrieval technique was modified to adjust the rovibrational constants ( G , B , D , etc.) and intensity parameters, including Herman–Wallis terms, rather than retrieving the individual positions and intensities. Speed-dependent Voigt line shapes with line mixing were required to remove systematic errors in the fit residuals. Self- and air-broadening (widths and pressure-induced shifts, speed dependence parameters) and line mixing (off-diagonal relaxation matrix elements) coefficients were thus obtained in the multispectrum fit. Remaining errors were minimized by fitting the weak 30011 ← 00001 band of 16 O 13 C 16 O as well as the weak hot bands 31112 ← 01101, 32212 ← 02201, 40012 ← 10001, and 40013 ← 10002 of 16 O 12 C 16 O that contribute interfering absorptions in this spectral window. This study presents the most extensive set of measurements to date for self- and air-broadening and self- and air-shift coefficients of a near infrared band of CO 2 . This is also the first study where line mixing parameters have been experimentally determined for any parallel CO 2 band.

In the previous paper, we report line strength measurements for 58 bands of 12CO2 between 4550 and 7000 cm−1 [R.A. Toth, L.R. Brown, C.E. Miller, V. Malathy Devi, D. Chris Benner, J. Mol. Spectrosc., this issue, doi:10.1016/j.jms.2006.008.001 .]. In the present study, self-broadenedwidth and self-induced pressure shift coefficients are determined in two intervals: (a) between 4750 and 5400 cm−1for bands of the Fermi triad (20011 ← 00001, 20012 ← 00001, 20013 ← 00001), three corresponding hot bands (21111 ← 01101, 21112 ← 01101, 21113 ← 01101) and the 01121← 00001 combination band; (b) between 6100 and 7000 cm−1 for the Fermi tetrad (30014 ← 00001, 30013 ← 00001, 30012 ← 00001, 30011 ← 00001), two associated hot bands (31113 ← 01101, 31112 ← 01101), as well as 00031 ← 00001 and its hot band 01131 ← 01101. Least-squares fits of the experimental width and pressure shift coefficients are modeled using empirical expressions: b 0 = exp ∑ i a ( i ) x ( i ) for widths where x ( 1 ) = 1 , x ( 2 ) = m , x ( 3 ) = m 2 , x ( 4 ) = m 3 , x ( 5 ) = m 4 , x ( 6 ) = 1 m , and d 0 = ∑ i a ( i ) x ( i ) for pressure shifts where x ( 1 ) = 1 , x ( 2 ) = 1 m , x ( 3 ) = m , x ( 4 ) = m 2 , x ( 5 ) = 1 m 2 , x ( 6 ) = 1 m 3 , x ( 7 ) = m 3 , x ( 8 ) = m m The modeled width coefficients generally agree with the experimental values with standard deviations of less than 1%, while the standard deviations of the modeled values for the pressure-induced shift coefficients range between 2.3% and 6.7%. The largest percentage error is associated with the system of the three hot bands: 21111 ← 01101, 21112 ← 01101, and 21113 ← 01101. It is observed that transitions with the same rotational quantum numbers have slightly different widths in some of the bands. As expected, pressure-induced-shift coefficients vary as a function of the band center, but there are also subtle differences from band to band for transitions with the same rotational quanta.

Line positions and strengths of 12 C 16 O 2 were measured between 4550 and 7000 cm −1 using near infrared absorption spectra recorded at 0.01–0.013 cm −1 resolution with the McMath-Pierce Fourier transform spectrometer located at the National Solar Observatory at Kitt Peak, Arizona. These were retrieved from 42 laboratory spectra obtained at room temperature with five absorption cells having various optical path lengths (from 0.1 to 409 m) filled with natural and enriched samples of CO 2 at pressures ranging from 2 to 581 Torr. In all, band strengths and Herman–Wallis-like F -factor coefficients were determined for 58 vibration–rotation bands from the least-squares fits of over 2100 unblended line strengths; strengths of 34 of these bands had not been previously reported. Band strengths in natural abundance generally ranged from 3.30 × 10 −20 to 2.8 × 10 −25 cm −1 /molecule cm −2 at 296 K. It was found that the high J transitions ( J ′ ⩾ 61) of the 20012 ← 00001 band centered at 4977.8347 cm −1 are perturbed, affecting both measured positions and strengths. Two other interacting bands, 21113e ← 01101e and 40002e ← 01101e, were also analyzed using degenerate perturbation theory. Comparisons with corresponding values from the literature indicate that absolute accuracies better than 1% and precisions of 0.5% were achieved for the strongest bands.

The space-based Orbiting Carbon Observatory (OCO) mission will achieve global measurements needed to distinguish spatial and temporal gradients in the CO2 column. Scheduled by NASA to launch in 2008, the instrument will obtain averaged dry air mole fraction ( X CO 2 ) with a precision of 1 part per million (0.3%) in order to quantify the variation of CO2 sources and sinks and to improve future climate forecasts. Retrievals of X CO 2 from ground-based measurements require even higher precisions to validate the satellite data and link them accurately and without bias to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) standard for atmospheric CO2 observations. These retrievals will require CO2 spectroscopic parameters with unprecedented accuracy. Here we present the experimental and data analysis methods implemented in laboratory studies in order to achieve this challenging goal. To cite this article: C.E. Miller et al., C. R. Power series expansions of water eigenstate energies in J and K converge poorly and show alternating signs of the coefficients of the power series. Euler series can be used effectively to change an alternating series into one where all the coefficients have the same sign and where the radius of convergence is increased. This paper extends the Euler series to a two-dimensional series in K 2 and [ J ( J + 1) − K 2 ]. Application of this Euler series to the rotational energies of the ground state and the first 4 excited vibrational states of water allows a fit to experimental accuracy to J = 22 and K = 22. This fit has good convergence and also has predictive capability. It is much easier to fit the perturbed states because the Euler series allows the zero-order energy the perturbed states to be predicted with more confidence.

The existence of methane in the martian atmosphere may be an indicator of subsurface life. Biological processes are known to fractionate the common isotopologues of methane, and hence measuring these isotopic ratios may yield constraints on the nature of the methane source. Any measurement of the isotopic ratios of atmospheric methane must consider the additional fractionation due to photochemistry in order to quantify the isotopic ratios of the source. Using a one-dimensional photochemical model, we find that photochemistry has a small (4.5‰) contribution to δ^(13)C(CH_4) but has a large (114‰) contribution to δD(CH_4). Confirmation of these fractionation values will require additional laboratory data on key model inputs, particularly the ultraviolet absorption cross sections of ^(13)CH_4 and kinetic rate coefficients for the reactions of ^(13)CH_4 and CH_3D with OH and O(^1D) at pressures and temperatures relevant to the martian atmosphere.

High-resolution near-infrared (4000–9000 cm−1) spectra of carbon dioxide have been recorded using the McMath–Pierce Fourier transform spectrometer at the Kitt Peak National Solar Observatory. Some 2500 observed positions have been used to determine spectroscopic constants for 53 different vibrational states of the 16O12C16O isotopologue, including eight vibrational states for which laboratory spectra have not previously been reported. Calibration by simultaneous use of CO near 4200 cm−1 and C2H2 near 6500 cm−1 provides absolute line position accuracies of 6.0 × 10−5 cm−1 (RMS) for strong, isolated transitions throughout the observed range. Fits with RMS errors

High-resolution near-infrared (4000–8500 cm −1 ) spectra of 13 C-enriched carbon dioxide have been recorded using the McMath-Pierce Fourier transform spectrometer at the Kitt Peak National Solar Observatory. We observed over 1000 line positions for the 16 O 13 C 16 O isotopologue, the majority of which have previously been observed only in spectra of the Venusian atmosphere [J. Mol. Spectrosc. 67 (1977) 304]. These have been analyzed to determine spectroscopic constants for 28 different vibrational states. The analysis yielded RMS fitting residuals −4 cm −1 for the strongest bands and RMS residuals −4 cm −1 for most other fitted bands. A 5% 18 O-enrichment in the sample enabled us to observe 410 line positions from 5 near-infrared vibrational bands of the 16 O 13 C 18 O isotopologue. Analysis of the 16 O 13 C 18 O bands yielded RMS fitting residuals −4 cm −1 . Additionally, the first fits for the 16 O 13 C 18 O 11101 ← 01101 and 11102 ← 01101 hot bands yielded RMS residuals of 2.3 × 10 −4 and 2.2 × 10 −4 cm −1 , respectively. Critical reevaluations of the spectroscopic constants for the low lying vibrational states for both isotopologues have been performed as part of the analysis.

Two experiments examined the effects of majority and unanimity decision rules on group decisions involving continuous alternatives. Each experiment used mock civil juries to test three hypotheses related to the claim that when the distribution of group members’ initial preferences is skewed, the group’s decision will be influenced more by the presence of outlier members under unanimity rule than under majority rule. Experiment 1 tested the hypotheses using a punitive damages case and positively skewed preference distributions. Experiment 2 tested the hypotheses using a compensatory damages case and manipulating the skewness of preference distributions in a 2 (group decision rule) × 2 (valence of skewness) factorial design. In both experiments, the extreme (outlier) member’s individual preference was significantly correlated with the group decision only under unanimity rule. A simple thought experiment based on the experimental results is suggested regarding the implications of using unanimity or majority rule for making decisions in civil juries.
