This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of the albumin/fibrinogen ratio (AFR) in the assessment of malnutrition and to compare its ability to predict early postoperative periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) in patients with aseptic revisions.Four hundred sixty-six patients undergoing revision total hip or knee arthroplasty between February 2017 and December 2019 were recruited in this retrospective study. We compared the differences in nutritional parameters between patients undergoing revision for septic and aseptic reasons. We used multivariate logistic regression and assessed the association between nutritional parameters and risk of PJI. 207 patients with aseptic revision were then evaluated for the incidence of acute postoperative infection within 90 days. The predictive ability of nutritional markers was assessed by receiver operating characteristic curves.In the multivariate logistic regression analysis, low albumin level (adjusted OR 1.56, 95% CI 1.16-2.08, P = .003), low prognostic nutritional index (PNI) (adjusted OR 1.57, 95% CI 1.01-2.43, P.043), and low AFR (adjusted OR 2.54, 95% CI 1.92-3.36, P.001) were independently associated with revision surgery for septic reasons. In accordance with the receiver operating characteristic analysis, the AFR exhibited a greater area under the curve value (0.721) than did the prognostic nutritional index and albumin. An elevated AFR (≥11.7) was significantly associated with old age, joint type, high Charlson comorbidity index, high American Society of Anesthesiologist, and diabetes (P.05).Our findings demonstrated AFR may be an effective biomarker to assess nutrition status and predict acute PJIs after revision TJA.

Background Patients with native joint septic arthritis are one of the highest risk groups for developing complications following total joint arthroplasty (TJA), especially periprosthetic joint infection(PJI). There is a paucity of information on the risk factors for developing PJI and the optimal treatment modality of the native septic joint that can mitigate that risk. This multicenter study aimed to determine these risk factors, including prior treatment. Methods A retrospective study of 233 TJAs performed, following prior septic arthritis at five institutions, was conducted. Comorbidities, organism profile, prior surgery, etiology of septic arthritis, and other relevant variables were reviewed. The primary outcome was the development of PJI, defined by Musculoskeletal Infection Society criteria. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were performed to identify risk factors for PJI. Results Overall, the PJI rate was 12.4% in patients who underwent TJA after native septic arthritis. Predisposing risk factors for PJI included antibiotic-resistant organisms, male gender, diabetes, and a postsurgical cause of septic arthritis eg open reduction internal fixation. When controlling for potential confounders, multivariate analysis revealed that male gender, diabetes, and a postoperative etiology were predictors of PJI. The definitive treatment modality for the septic joint did not affect the rate of PJI for both arthroscopy vs irrigation and debridement (I&D), and two-stage exchange vs single-stage procedure. Discussion This study has identified several risk factors for developing PJI in patients with prior septic joint arthritis, some of which are modifiable. The initial treatment modality of the native septic joint has no bearing on the development of PJI after TJA.

An unusual tensile deformation behaviour in the form of a propagating band along the sample gauge was observed in two neutron-irradiated 316 stainless steel samples during room-temperature tests, leading to a combination of high strength and high ductility. These bands were not observed in an unirradiated counterpart. With the help of in situ high-energy synchrotron x-ray diffraction, the phase-specific crystal information was tracked at different deformation levels in each sample. Post-irradiation and post-deformation samples were examined using electron microscopy to characterize various microstructural features. All samples displayed a deformation-induced martensitic phase transformation, which was identified as a second strain-hardening mechanism accompanying the dislocation hardening. The deformation-induced martensitic transformation was rationalized by the effect of applied stress on the effective martensite start temperature. The results showed that the irradiation did not alter the dislocation hardening and the martensitic transformation mechanisms, but the increased yield strength in irradiated materials facilitated the localized phase transformation at the onset of plastic deformation, in contrast to the unirradiated material which required pre-straining. The hardening effect of the martensitic transformation reduced the tendency towards necking and mitigated the loss of ductility in the irradiated material by carrying the deformation in the form of a propagating band. Despite the beneficial effect from the martensitic transformation, this study indicates that this mechanism cannot not be activated at typical operating temperatures of nuclear reactors.

In this paper, we introduce a general framework of the self-exciting point process with the truncated generalized Pareto distribution to measure the extreme risks in the stock markets under price limits. We incorporate the predictable marks, defined as the variance of mark distribution depending on the previous events via the intensity, into the model setting. The proposed process can well accommodate many important empirical characteristics, such as the thick-tailness, extreme risk clustering and price limits. We derive a closed-form solution for the objective likelihood, based on which the proposed model can be estimated via the standard maximum likelihood estimation algorithm. Furthermore, the closed-form measures of the Value-at-Risk and Expected Shortfall are also derived. For empirical illustration, we use the China Securities Index 300 (with ± 10 % price restriction) in the analysis. In general, the results from both in-sample fitting and out-of-sample forecasting measures show that the proposed process can explain the empirical data well. We also investigate the cascade effect of the China stock market by introducing the branching process to distinguish the endogenous risks from the exogenous risks.

Background Diagnosing acute periprosthetic joint infection remains a challenge. Several studies have proposed different acute cutoffs resulting in the International Consensus Meeting recommending a cutoff of 100 mg/L, 10,000 cell/μL and 90% for serum C-reactive protein (CRP), synovial white blood cell count (WBC), and polymorphonuclear percentage (PMN%), respectively. However, establishing cutoffs are difficult as the control group is limited to rare early aseptic revisions, and performing aspiration in asymptomatic patients is difficult because of a fear of seeding a well-functioning joint arthroplasty. This study (1) assessed the sensitivity of current thresholds for acute periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) and (2) identified associated factors for false negatives. Methods We retrospectively reviewed patients with acute PJIs (n = 218), defined as less than 6 weeks from index arthroplasty, treated between 2000 and 2017. Diagnosis of PJI was based on 2 positive cultures of the same pathogen from the periprosthetic tissue or synovial fluid samples. Sensitivities of International Consensus Meeting cutoff values of CRP, synovial WBC, and PMN% were evaluated according to organism type. Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to determine associated factors for false negatives. Results Overall, the sensitivity of CRP, synovial WBC, and PMN% for acute PJI was 55.3%, 59.6%, and 50.5%, respectively. Coagulase-negative Staphylococcus (CNS) demonstrated the lowest sensitivity for both CRP (37.5%) and WBC (55.6%). CNS infection was identified as an independent risk factor for false-negative CRP. Conclusions Current thresholds for acute PJI may be missing approximately half of PJIs. Low virulent organisms, such as CNS, may be responsible for these false negatives. Current thresholds for acute PJI must be reexamined.

Summary Background It is not known whether age alone or the increased comorbidities in older patients are responsible for the higher rate of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) in older patients. Aim To test the hypothesis that age alone is not a risk factor for PJI after total joint arthroplasty. Methods This retrospective study included the review of 23,966 patients undergoing primary total hip and knee arthroplasty between January 1st, 2010 and December 31st, 2016 at a single institution. Patients who developed PJI, as defined by International Consensus Meeting criteria, were identified. Studies evaluating the influence of age on the incidence of PJI should take into account the other confounding variables that contribute to PJI.

Aromatic compounds, including many polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), are suspected carcinogens and may originate from different sources. To investigate the impact of anthropogenic emission reductions on unknown aromatic compounds in particulate matter, we collected samples during the pre-COVID period in 2020, the COVID-19 lockdown period in 2020, and the same period as the lockdown in 2019. Besides the 16 PAHs, other aromatic compounds were analyzed by Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry and comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography-time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Four main compound classes were identified: CH, CHO, CHNO, and CHOS. Hierarchical cluster analysis showed the aromatic compounds varied during the different periods. Compared with before the pandemic, the relative abundances of aromatic compounds with low degrees of unsaturation and long alkyl chains (e.g., alkylbenzenes) increased. These compounds probably mainly arose from fossil fuel combustion and petrochemical industry emissions. The CHO compounds, which were dominated by those with high degrees of oxidation, might originate from secondary organic aerosols. Aromatic aldehydes (e.g., cyclamen aldehyde) and benzoates (e.g., 2-ethylhexyl benzoate) probably with high toxicity deserve more attention. Comammox bacteria have proved to be one dominant and significant ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms (AOMs) in municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), however, it still remains unknown about their abundance and diversity in industrial WWTPs. In this study, activated sludge samples from 8 municipal WWTPs and 6 industrial WWTPs treating refinery wastewater were taken and analyzed using qPCR and amoA gene sequencing. Intriguingly, quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) results suggested that comammox bacteria had a higher numerical abundance compared with ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) in municipal WWTPs but did not in refinery WWTPs. Moreover, comammox amoA sequences obtained from high-throughput sequencing were retrieved from all the 8 municipal samples but only 1 industrial sample. Further phylogenetic analysis revealed that N. nitrosa cluster accounted for as high as 79.56% of the total comammox affiliated sequences, which was the most numerically abundant comammox species in municipal WWTPs. This study provided new insights into the abundance and diversity of comammox bacteria in the biological nitrification process in municipal and refinery wastewater treatment systems.

Real-time performance and reliability are two critical indicators in an industrial wireless sensor network (IWSN). Several time-division multiple-address (TDMA)-based industrial standards such as WirelessHART and ISA100 are widely used in IWSNs. However, to simplify the analysis, standard TDMA supports only one or two slot types in each frame, and each slot is usually 10 ms, which severely limits transmissibility and real-time responses in TDMA-based IWSNs where the number of transmissions is large but the length of most packets is small. In this paper, we propose a TDMA frame containing slots of different lengths to address this issue. The key ideas are to waste fewer slot resources and achieve on-demand slot allocation. First, we study the matching problem in a TDMA frame; then, we propose two scheduling methods, the split scheduling algorithm (SSA) and the double plug-in algorithm (DPA), under our TDMA frame. Extensive simulations and real testbed results show that the proposed solution DPA can significantly improve network performance and reliability. Real-time comparisons with other existing scheduling schemes show that the proposed solution improves the acceptance ratio by 48.8% compared to the rate-monotonic scheme.

Autonomous driving, which can free our hands and feet, is of increasing importance in our daily lives. However, the capacity of onboard computation and communication limits the rapid development of autonomous driving. To address this issue, this paper proposes a novel model named the edge computing-based lanes scheduling system (ECLSS) to study lane scheduling for each vehicle around crossroads with real-time edge devices. There are several edge computing devices (ECD) deployed around crossroads in ECLSS that can collect information from vehicles and road conditions with short-range wired/wireless transmissions. Based on the strong computing power of ECDs and their real-time transmission performance, we propose two centralized management lane scheduling methods: the searching for efficient switching algorithm (SESA) and special vehicles lane switching algorithm (SVLSA). These edge computing-based autonomous driving methods aim to achieve high speed passing through crossroads and guarantee that special vehicles can pass through crossroads within a certain time. Extensive simulations are conducted, and the simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed approaches over competing schemes in typical lane switching scenarios.

The fabrication of a bionic super-hydrophobic metallic surface without any low-surface-energy modification is investigated, in which picosecond laser ablation, electropolishing and electrodeposition are used sequentially. The micro-cone structure is formed via laser ablation, and then the nano-pyramid structure is electrodeposited on the micro-cone structure, resulting in a hierarchical structure that is important for achieving super-hydrophobicity on an intrinsically hydrophilic material surface. In this study, the surface morphology and material removal mechanism are discussed with respect to the laser-ablated surface and the subsequent electropolished/electrodeposited surfaces. The condensation experiments results show that both types of surfaces are associated with relatively high contact angles (CAs) at normal temperatures, and the CAs are 147° and 160°, respectively. However, the CA on the laser-ablated surfaces at low temperatures decreases to as less as 107°, which may be owing to the easy transition from Cassie state to a metastable state or even the Wenzel state, leading to a degraded hydrophobic surface. By contrast, the CA on the sequentially processed surfaces still maintains at 150°, which should be attributed to the densely distributed nano-scale structures. The sequentially processed surfaces also show excellent long-term durability. Furthermore, this technique has been employed for fabricating super-hydrophobic surfaces with CAs > 151° and the sliding angles (SAs)

A novel EMD-based denoising method, referred to as EMD with soft thresholding and Savitzky-Golay, is proposed for single photon lidar denoising. After the discrimination of the high-frequency and low-frequency IMFs, the soft thresholding and Savitzky-Golay filter are applied, respectively. The proposed denoising method has a better denoising performance and less signal distortion on simulated single photon lidar data than that of EMD partial reconstruction and wavelet transform method. With the proposed method, the SNR of real single photon lidar increased from 12.36 to 15.32 dB and false alarm rate is reduced obviously.

In the present work, we show the preparation of (In,Ga,Mn)As films with different Ga concentration by Mn ion implantation and pulsed laser melting. All films are confirmed to be well recrystallized by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry/channeling and to be ferromagnetic by magnetometry measurements, respectively. Their Curie temperatures depend on the Ga concentration. Our results show the perspective of ion implantation in the preparation of different III-Mn-V quaternary alloys as new members of diluted ferromagnetic semiconductors.
