Economic resilience has been a popular issue in recent years. Along with the consideration of severe shocks caused by the financial crisis of 2007–2008 and globalization of industry and the upgradation of knowledge and technology, economic resilience has brought in much attention. About 50 years of development of planned industrial parks in Taiwan has resulted in considerable economic scale; however, due to changes in interior demands and the exterior environment with time, rearrangement and industrial transformation have made the development of industrial parks difficult. Accordingly, the resilience of planned industrial parks in Taiwan, when encountering a variety of shocks, need to be reviewed and examined. This study selects 12 planned industrial parks from Tainan and Kaohsiung, in southern Taiwan, as subjects and had a complete understanding of economic resilience and factors that influence economic resilience from literature reviews. Four quadrant model constituted by the indicators of economic resistance and recovery as well as discriminant analysis are implemented to analyze the resilience of industrial parks with different backgrounds and various shocks, as well as the elements influencing the resilience. Analytical results indicate that planned industrial parks with industrial structures based on specialized variety or with a steady input of knowledge and innovation to research and development benefited the industrial parks in better resilience, while complete infrastructure planning and governance are fundamental conditions for resilience.

We have previously shown fluorescent cationic starch nanoparticles (FCSNs) penetrate enamel surface porosity of active carious lesions, potentially aiding their detection. Here, we evaluate the in vitro diagnostic accuracy of FCSNs in detecting occlusal caries compared to histologic reference standard.100 extracted human teeth were selected with sound (50), or either non-cavitated (25) or cavitated (25) lesions. A region of interest (ROI) on the occlusal surface was assessed for fluorescence by two independent examiners, after immersion in FCSN solution, water rinse, and illumination by dental curing lamp viewed through orange UV-filter glasses. ROIs were sectioned and evaluated by histology (Downer Criteria) as a gold standard for caries presence. Cohen's Kappa was determined for inter- and intra-examiner agreement, and sensitivity, specificity, and area under the curve of Receiver Operator Curves (ROCFCSN use resulted in substantial inter-user (k=0.74±0.07), and high intra-user agreement (k=0.80±0.06; 0.94±0.03, by examiner). Sensitivity, specificity and ROCFCSNs are a reproducible and accurate novel technology for occlusal caries detection, with high sensitivity and specificity compared to histology. Future clinical validation is necessary. FCSNs can improve early caries detection and shift treatment towards non-invasive approaches, improving oral health.

Objective To assess the sensitivity and specificity of arteriovenous malformation (AVM) nidal component identification and quantification using an unsupervised machine learning algorithm and to evaluate the association between intervening nidal brain parenchyma and radiation-induced changes (RICs) after stereotactic radiosurgery. Methods Fully automated segmentation via unsupervised classification with fuzzy c-means clustering was used to analyze the AVM nidus on T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging studies. The proportions of vasculature, brain parenchyma, and cerebrospinal fluid were quantified. These were compared with the results from manual segmentation. The association between the brain parenchyma component and RIC development was assessed. Results The proposed algorithm was applied to 39 unruptured AVMs in 39 patients (17 female and 22 male patients), with a median age of 27 years. The median proportion of the constituents was as follows: vasculature, 31.3%; brain parenchyma, 48.4%; and cerebrospinal fluid, 16.8%. RICs were identified in 17 of the 39 patients (43.6%). Compared with manual segmentation, the automated algorithm was able to achieve a Dice similarity index of 79.5% (sensitivity, 73.5%; specificity, 85.5%). RICs were associated with a greater proportion of intervening nidal brain parenchyma (52.0% vs. 45.3%; P = 0.015). Obliteration was not associated with greater proportions of nidal vasculature (36.0% vs. 31.2%; P = 0.152). Conclusions The automated segmentation algorithm was able to achieve classification of the AVM nidus components with relative accuracy. Greater proportions of intervening nidal brain parenchyma were associated with RICs.

Background Previous studies point out a positive association between academic performance and school surrounding greenness, but the population included in these studies only recruited single-grade students. Objectives To design a more all-rounded investigation of the association between school surrounding greenness and students’ academic performance in general in Massachusetts, USA. Methods We included a total of 27,493 3rd–10th grade students from public schools over 9 years (2006–2014) in the study. Academic performance (i.e. English and Mathematics achievement level) were primarily based on Composite Performance Index (CPI) as well as the percentage of students who scored “Proficient and Higher” (AP%) in the examination. Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and green land use area (within 250–2000 m circular buffer) were used to server the index of school surrounding greenness). We applied generalized linear mixed models (GLMMs) to investigate the relationship between surrounding greenness and academic performance with adjustment on socio-economic and demographic factors. Results We found a significant positive association (p Conclusions A higher surrounding greenness contributes a better academic performance in students of all grades. This finding could serve as a reference for designing green landscape especially near school areas.

Prenatal perfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) exposure has been linked to adverse birth outcomes, but the underlying mechanism has yet to be elucidated. DNA methylation changes in mesoderm-specific transcript (MEST) imprinted gene may be a mechanism of the prenatal exposure effects of PFASs on fetal growth. The aim was to investigate the prenatal PFASs exposure effects on DNA methylation changes in MEST imprinted gene involved in fetal growth. Among 486 mother-infant pairs from the Taiwan Birth Panel Study, PFASs and DNA methylation levels at 5 CpG sites of MEST promoter region were measured in cord blood. Univariable and multivariable linear regressions were performed to estimate the associations between prenatal PFAS exposure, MEST DNA methylation levels, and child birth outcomes. Mediation analysis was performed to examine the potential pathway of MEST methylation between PFASs and birth outcomes. We found that higher prenatal perfluorooctyl sulfonate (PFOS) exposure was significantly associated with lower methylation levels at 5 CpG sites of MEST promoter region (an adjusted β range: -1.56, -2.22). Significant negative associations were also found between MEST methylation levels and child birth weight. Furthermore, the associations between PFOS and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) exposure and MEST methylation levels were more profound in girls than in boys. The mediated effect of average MEST methylation level between PFOS exposure and birth weight was 18.3 (95% CI = 2.1, 40.2; p = 0.014). The direct effect of PFOS exposure to birth weight independent to average MEST methylation level was -93.2 (95% CI = -170.5, -17.8; p = 0.018). In conclusion, our results suggest that prenatal PFAS exposure, especially PFOS, is associated with lower methylation levels at MEST promoter region, which not only leverages the role of imprinted gene in ensuring the integrity of fetal growth but also provides a potential mechanism for evaluating the prenatal exposure effect.

In utero perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) exposures have been linked to adverse birth outcomes, but the underlying mechanism remains elusive. Epigenetic regulations such as changes in DNA methylation profiles in mesoderm-specific transcript (MEST) imprinted gene may provide a potential mechanism of the prenatal exposure effects of PFASs on fetal growth. The aim of the study was to investigate the prenatal exposure effects of PFASs to DNA methylation changes at MEST imprinted gene involved in fetal growth. A total of four hundred and eighty-six mother-infant pairs were included in the analyses from Taiwan Birth Panel Study (TBPS), collecting from 2004 to 2005 in four hospitals in Taipei city and New Taipei City. PFASs were measured by UPLC-MS/MS in cord blood. DNA methylation levels of MEST gene were measured from cord blood. Univariable and multivariable linear regressions were performed to estimate the associations between prenatal PFASs exposures, MEST DNA methylation levels, and the child birth outcomes. Mediation analysis was performed to examine the potential pathway of MEST methylation in the relationship between PFASs and birth outcomes. We found that higher prenatal exposures to perfluorooctyl sulfonate (PFOS) was significantly associated with lower methylation levels at 5 CpG sites of MEST promoter region, after considering potential confounding factors. Significant negative associations were also found between MEST methylation levels and child birth weight. Gender difference was observed in the association between PFASs exposure and MEST methylation level. Prenatal PFOS exposure effect on birth weight might be mediated by MEST methylation. In conclusion, our results suggest that prenatal PFASs exposures, especially PFOS, are associated with lower methylation levels at MEST promoter region, which not only leverage the role of imprinted gene for ensuring the integrity of fetal growth but also provide a potential mechanism for evaluating the prenatal exposure effect. The effects of inclusion size and chemical composition on acicular ferrite (AF) nucleation and possible nucleation mechanisms were discussed. With the use of low-carbon structure steel containing 13 ppm Mg, the chemical composition and size of inclusions were quantified by scanning electron microscopy combined with an energy dispersive spectroscopy system. Results showed that the complex inclusions MgO-MnS and MgO-Al2O3-MnS are the most effective inclusions for inducing AF nucleation in Mg-containing A36, and their probabilities of AF nucleation are 35.8% and 41.4%, respectively. Moreover, the inclusion size in the range of 1–2 μm exhibits the most remarkable ability to induce AF formation. AF nucleates at the interface of MgO and MgO-Al2O3 because of the low lattice misfit with AF. Complex inclusions, such as MgO-MnS and MgO-Al2O3-MnS, present a better ability of inducing AF formation than that of MnS due to the Mn-depleted zone.

Objective To evaluate effectiveness of early Gamma Knife radiosurgery (GKRS) in treatment of medically refractory trigeminal neuralgia (TN). Methods This retrospective review comprised 108 consecutive patients with medically refractory idiopathic TN between 2006 and 2014. All patients underwent GKRS targeting the root entry zone with a median maximum dose of 90 Gy and isodose line of 20%. Outcomes pertaining to pain and facial numbness were scored using Barrow Neurological Institute scales. Results Following a median latency period of 4 weeks, we observed complete or adequate pain relief (Barrow Neurological Institute scores of I–IIIB) in 86 of 108 patients (90%). At a median time of 17 months, 22 patients (26%) experienced pain recurrence. New-onset facial numbness was reported by 59 patients (55%). Treatment failure rates were highest among patients with a longer history of pain. Compared with patients with pain history of ≤5 years, patients with pain history of >5 years experienced longer latency before pain relief (P = 0.027). Univariate and multivariate analyses demonstrated that pain history of ≤5 years was a significant predictor of pain relief (P = 0.049 and P = 0.045, respectively). Conclusions GKRS achieves a high rate of pain relief among patients with medically refractory idiopathic TN. Pain history of ≤5 years is a reliable predictor of pain relief and appears to be associated with shorter latency to pain relief after GKRS. Therefore, early GKRS for patients with medically refractory idiopathic TN is recommended.

Prenatal exposure to phenols, phthalates (PAEs), and organophosphate (OP) pesticides may increase the risk of abnormal birth outcomes. However, many previous studies have examined exposure to a limited number of chemical classes or exposure profiles limited to a specific stage of pregnancy. This study aims to characterize the concurrent exposure scenario throughout pregnancy by simultaneously monitoring internal doses of several endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs), including 2 phenols (nonylphenol (NP) and bisphenol A (BPA)), 9 PAEs, and 6 OP pesticide metabolites and to assess the relationships between concurrent exposure to EDCs and infant birth weight, length, and head and chest circumference. One hundred and sixty two women provided three spot urine samples at approximately 11 and 26weeks gestation and at delivery. We applied multivariable linear regression and ridge regression models to estimate the effects of separate and correlated exposures. Multivariable linear regression models revealed that women with short birth-length infants had significantly higher urinary second-trimester NP levels (50th percentile, 5.03μg/g creatinine) (β=-0.47cm; 95% CI=-0.93 to -0.01). Similarly significant relationships were observed between second-trimester mono-methyl phthalate (MMP) exposure and short birth length, second-trimester ΣPAEs and short birth length, second-trimester ΣPAEs exposure and reduced head and chest circumference, second-trimester diethylphosphate (DEP) exposure and reduced birth weight and length, and second-trimester ΣDEPs exposure and short birth length. Women with urinary BPA above the 75th percentile or ΣPAEs levels above the 50th percentile in the third trimester had infants with significantly reduced head circumference. These observations suggest that the second trimester may be the critical stage of susceptibility for fetal development. In ridge regression models, for which women with fewer measures for exposure to NP, BPA, MMP, ΣPAEs, DEP and ΣDEPs simultaneously were available, no relationships were found with infant size at birth. Additional studies with larger sample sizes are warranted.

Previous studies have confirmed the beneficial effects of green space exposure on depressive disorders, but the majority of them were conducted in developed countries. Given the difference in utilization of green spaces in countries with agriculturally heavy economies such as Indonesia, the effects of green space remain unknown. This study aimed to investigate the association between green space exposure and depressive disorders, focusing on Indonesia. Depressive disorders data provided by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation was used. Exposure to the green space was based on the normalized difference vegetation index (MODIS-NDVI) and green land-cover data provided by the Geospatial Information Agency of Indonesia. A generalized additive mixed model was conducted, followed by a sensitivity test and positive-negative control analysis, to evaluate the association. Stratified analysis was employed to assess the effects of green space on depressive disorders in areas with different levels of urbanization. Exposure to green space significantly reduced the risk of depressive disorders by up to 5% per interquartile unit increment of NDVI. Moreover, there was a 12.4% reduced risk of depressive disorders coinciding with an 8.4% increase in the proportion of forest and total vegetation. In high-urbanization areas, the results of sensitivity analysis illustrated that green spaces reduced the risk of depressive disorders by 10%. Exposure to green spaces was confirmed to be associated with a reduced risk of depressive disorders in Indonesia. Findings of this ecological study could serve as references for urban planning, considering the health benefits of green spaces in developing countries.

Background Although the breast cancer mortality has slowed down from 2008 to 2017, breast cancer incidence rate continues to rise and thus, new and/or improved treatments are highly needed. Among them, oncolytic virotherapy which has the ability of facilitating the antitumor adaptive immunity, appears as a promising anticancer therapy. Oncolytic measles virus (MV) is particularly suitable for targeting breast cancer due to the upregulation of MV's receptor nectin-4. Nonetheless, with limited clinical success currently, ways of boosting MV-induced breast cancer oncolysis are therefore necessary. Oncolytic virotherapy alone and combined with chemotherapeutic drugs are two strategic areas with intensive development for the search of anticancer drugs. Considering that baicalein (BAI) and cinnamaldehyde (CIN) have demonstrated antitumor properties against multiple cancers including breast cancer, they could be good partners for MV-based oncolytic virotherapy. Purpose To assess the in vitro effect of BAI and CIN with MV and assess their combination effects. Methods We examined the combinatorial cytotoxic effect of oncolytic MV and BAI or CIN on MCF-7 breast cancer cells. Potential anti-MV activities of the phytochemicals were first investigated in vitro to determine the optimal combination model. Synergism of MV and BAI or CIN was then evaluated in vitro by calculating the combination indices. Finally, cell cycle analysis and apoptosis assays were performed to confirm the mechanism of synergism. Results Overall, the viral sensitization combination modality using oncolytic MV to first infect MCF-7 breast cancer cells followed by drug treatment with BAI or CIN was found to produce significantly enhanced tumor killing. Further mechanistic studies showed that the combinations ‘MV-BAI’ and ‘MV-CIN’ display synergistic anti-breast cancer effect, mediated by elevated apoptosis. Conclusion We demonstrated, for the first time, effective combination of oncolytic MV with BAI or CIN that could be further explored and potentially developed into novel therapeutic strategies targeting nectin-4-marked breast cancer cells.

This study utilized a long-term satellite-based vegetation index, and considered culture-specific emission sources (temples and Chinese restaurants) with Land-use Regression (LUR) modelling to estimate the spatial-temporal variability of PM 2.5 using data from Taipei metropolis, which exhibits typical Asian city characteristics. Annual average PM 2.5 concentrations from 2006 to 2012 of 17 air quality monitoring stations established by Environmental Protection Administration of Taiwan were used for model development. PM 2.5 measurements from 2013 were used for external data verification. Monthly Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) images coupled with buffer analysis were used to assess the spatial-temporal variations of greenness surrounding the monitoring sites. The distribution of temples and Chinese restaurants were included to represent the emission contributions from incense and joss money burning, and gas cooking, respectively. Spearman correlation coefficient and stepwise regression were used for LUR model development, and 10-fold cross-validation and external data verification were applied to verify the model reliability. The results showed a strongly negative correlation (r: −0.71 to −0.77) between NDVI and PM 2.5 while temples (r: 0.52 to 0.66) and Chinese restaurants (r: 0.31 to 0.44) were positively correlated to PM 2.5 concentrations. With the adjusted model R 2 of 0.89, a cross-validated adj-R 2 of 0.90, and external validated R 2 of 0.83, the high explanatory power of the resultant model was confirmed. Moreover, the averaged NDVI within a 1750 m circular buffer ( p p p = 0.06) were selected as important predictors during the stepwise selection procedures. According to the partial R 2 , NDVI explained 66% of PM 2.5 variation and was the dominant variable in the developed model. We suggest future studies consider these three factors when establishing LUR models for estimating PM 2.5 in other Asian cities.

A sieving step was developed to recover corn fiber from whole stillage of a dry grind process as a cellulosic ethanol feedstock, and to reduce fiber contents in distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS). Several processes have been developed to recover fiber in the dry grind process, such as wet fractionation, dry fractionation and elusieve process. Wet fractionation and dry fractionation recover fiber before liquefaction, but addition of these steps to existing plants requires considerable modifications with high capital costs. The elusieve process recovers fiber from DDGS, but it requires drying of DDGS. To simply integrate fiber recovery to current dry grind plants with less operating and capital costs, sieving was applied to whole stillage. Commercial whole stillage samples were ground, incubated with protease or with a surfactant, and sieved. Sieving was effective to recover neutral detergent fiber (NDF), and NDF contents in retentate samples were increased by 45–101%. In addition, permeate samples, called enhanced DDGS, exhibited decreased fiber contents and increased oil contents. Among treatments, grinding before sieving was more effective to recover fiber with high NDF contents and low protein and oil contents. Fiber recovered from whole stillage and ground whole stillage were hydrolyzed for cellulosic sugars. Whole stillage and ground whole stillage were sieved in a scaled-up (15×) vibrator shaker. The retentate samples were pretreated with dilute acid followed by hydrolysis. Ground whole stillage showed higher sugar yields than whole stillage. After hydrolysis, glucose, xylose and arabinose yields from ground whole stillage were 90.78, 92.93 and 76.99%, respectively. Grinding before sieving produces more eDDGS, and could potentially increase downstream ethanol yields.

The mechanisms of the strong inward rectification in inward rectifier K(+) (Kir) channels are controversial because the drop in electrical potential due to the movement of the blocker and coupling ions is insufficient to explain the steep voltage-dependent block near the equilibrium potential. Here, we study the "driving force"-dependent block in Kir channels with a novel approach incorporating concepts from the non-equilibrium thermodynamics of small systems, and computer kinetic simulations based on the experimental data of internal Ba(2+) block on Kir2.1 channels. The steep exponential increase in the apparent binding rate near the equilibrium potential is explained, when the encounter frequency is construed as the likelihood of transfer events down or against the electrochemical potential gradient. The exponent of flux ratio, nf=2.62, implies that the blockage of the internal blocker may be coupled with the outward transport of 2 to 3K(+) ions. The flux-coupled block in the single-file multi-ion pore can be demonstrated by the concentration gradient alone, as well as when the driving force is the electrochemical potential difference across the membrane.

Background Atypical and anaplastic meningiomas have much higher recurrence rates after surgical resection compared with benign meningiomas, but the role of adjuvant radiosurgery remains unclear. This study was undertaken to evaluate the outcomes of gamma knife radiosurgery for patients with atypical and anaplastic meningiomas. Methods In this retrospective analysis of a prospectively maintained database, 46 patients with histologically proven atypical or anaplastic meningiomas by current World Health Organization (WHO) criteria underwent postoperative Gamma Knife radiosurgery between 1993 and 2013. The median follow-up period was 32.6 months. The median tumor volume and margin dose were 11.7 mL (range, 2–53 mL) and 13.1 Gy (range, 12.0–16.5 Gy), respectively. Results Local control at 3 and 5 years was 50.6% and 32.1%, respectively. Gender ( P = 0.013) and marginal dose less than or equal to 13Gy ( P = 0.049) were associated with the local control. The 3- and 5-year overall survival for patients with WHO grade II was 97.1% and 88.3%, respectively, compared with 66.7% and 66.7% for patients with WHO grade III meningiomas. Radiation therapy before Gamma Knife radiosurgery (GKRS; P = 0.018) and tumor grade ( P = 0.019) were the factors associated with a worse overall survival rate. Fourteen patients (30.4%) developed adverse radiation effects after GKRS treatment, and all were Radiation Therapy Oncology Group grade I. Conclusions Postoperative GKRS treatment for patients with atypical and anaplastic meningioma is challenging. More aggressive treatment, including of safely maximizing the extent of surgical resection and using a higher margin dose (>13Gy), should be applied to achieve better local control.

Background The prevalence of allergic rhinitis (AR) continues to increase, and the greatest increases were observed mostly in non-Western regions, particularly Asian and Pacific regions; however, only a few studies have been conducted in Asia. Objectives Using Taiwan as an example of a typical Asian country, this study aimed to evaluate the association between green areas and the frequency of clinical visits for AR among children in Asia. Methods We used the Longitudinal Health Insurance Database to identify subjects diagnosed with AR at four years old in 2003, who were then followed up with until 2011. Greenness exposure was assessed using the MODIS Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). The Generalized Additive Mixed Model (GAMM) was applied to examine the association between green areas and the rate of AR after controlling for confounders. Results The major results indicate a positive correlation, as green areas significantly increased the risk of AR by up to 8.4%. Further, sensitivity test analyses confirmed the robustness of the model estimates, even after adjusting for confounders. Stratified analysis results also display areas with high humidity and low temperatures increasing the risk of AR by up to 14% and 27%, respectively. In contrast, areas with low humidity and high temperatures decreased the risk of AR by up to 4% and 22%, respectively. Moreover, the positive relationship between greenness and AR among children was consistent across different sub-populations. Conclusions Greenness exposure contributes to an increased risk of allergic rhinitis (AR). This finding could serve as a reference for designing green landscapes, especially in residential areas.

Atmospheric polychlorinated-dibenzo-dioxins/dibenzo-furans (PCDD/Fs) remains an important environmental health concern. Although the total emission inventories of PCDD/Fs in Taiwan decreased from 320 to 52.1 g-I-TEQ/year during 2002–2016, the resulting concentrations of atmospheric PCDD/F and distributions in Taiwan are unknown. We, therefore, conducted a comprehensive investigation of spatial and seasonal variations and apportioned potential sources of ambient PCDD/F concentrations in Taiwan-based on 11-year observation data. A total of 1,008 atmospheric PCDD/F samples were collected from 25 air monitoring stations (from seven areas) and 1 background station for 2006–2016. Linear regression was used to model changes in PCDD/F concentrations. Principal component analysis (PCA) and positive matrix factorization (PMF) were used to identify potential contributors. PCDD/F concentrations in the ambient air gradually decreased during the study period, with a median concentration of 28.2 fg I-TEQ/m3 over 11 years. The highest median PCDD/F concentrations were found in the highly industrialized regions of western Taiwan (38.0–43.4 fg I-TEQ/m3). Lower concentrations were found in eastern Taiwan (∼10 fg I-TEQ/m3). Background stations reported the lowest concentrations of PCDD/Fs, with a median concentration of 1.47 fg I-TEQ/m3. Overall, the concentrations of atmospheric PCDD/Fs in Taiwan were higher in winter (13.4–86.7 fg I-TEQ/m3) than in summer (9.65–27.2 fg I-TEQ/m3). The PCA results indicated that PCDD/F profiles varied by both region (industrialized, urbanized, and background areas) and season. The PMF model for the overall data revealed that the major sources of PCDD/Fs were industrial activities (71.2%). However, in less industrialized areas, traffic activities, long-range transport, and open burning were dominant.

The rising prevalence and incidence of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) have been noted around the world. However, no study has been conducted to examine the effect of surrounding environment on incidence of ESRD. This study assessed the associations of exposure to PM2.5 level and surrounding green spaces, separately, with incidence of ESRD in Taiwan. Demographic and clinical data used in this study was retrieved from the National Health Insurance Research Database from 2003 to 2012. PM2.5 data collected from the Environmental Protection Administration of Taiwan and a hybrid land-use regression model was used to approximate long-term exposure to PM2.5. Percentage of exposure to surrounding green spaces was used to determine individual exposure level. Cox proportional hazards models with a generalized estimating equation were applied to investigate the effect of surrounding environment on incidence of ESRD. The results showed significant positive association between exposure to PM2.5 level and incidence of ESRD; but inverse association between exposure to surrounding green spaces and incidence of ESRD (adjusted hazard ratio (AHR) = 1.08, 95% CI: 1.00–1.15 for exposure to PM2.5 level; AHR = 0.90, 95%CI: 0.84–0.98 for surrounding green spaces). Together, the findings from this study have added suggestive evidence on the adverse effect of exposure to PM2.5 level and the beneficial effect of exposure to surrounding green spaces on the incidence of ESRD in a general population in Taiwan.

Objective Gamma-knife radiosurgery (GKS) for vestibular schwannomas (VSs) has become popular during the last two decades, and a promising tumor control rate has been reported. Therefore, the evaluation and preservation of auditory-vestibular nerve function after GKS have become more and more important in these patients with long-term survival. We have traditionally used pure-tone audiometry (PTA) for evaluation of auditory nerve function, and the caloric test for superior vestibular nerve function. Vestibular-evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) has recently emerged from various neurophysiological examinations for assessment of the integrity of the inferior vestibular nerve function. This novel tool has been established to represent a sacculo-collic reflex. By using these three tools, the auditory-vestibular nerve function of VS patients can be evaluated and monitored before and after GKS. Methods Fourteen patients with unilateral VS that underwent GKS were prospectively recruited. All of them received a battery of auditory-vestibular function tests including PTA, caloric, and cVEMP tests before and after GKS at each time point (1, 6, and 12 months). Our data also included the tumor volumes and their relationship with the PTA, caloric, and cVEMP test results. Results The PTA, caloric, and cVEMP tests showed abnormal results before GKS in 85.7%, 78.6% and 78.6% of our VS patients, respectively. The PTA, caloric, and cVEMP results did not show strong correlations between each other. However, there was a tendency that when the tumor grew larger, the auditory-vestibular function deficits became more severe. The PTA and cVEMP test results remained stable during the 1-year follow-up after GKS. However, the caloric test showed transient deterioration at the 6th month follow-up, which then recovered by the 1-year follow-up. Conclusion The combination of these three tests can help us diagnose VS and assess the change in auditory-vestibular nerve function during the post-GKS follow-up period. The results of these three tests were independent for smaller tumors, but all tests may show abnormal findings with larger tumors. Although the study is still ongoing, the preliminary data showed that GKS treatment would not affect the auditory-vestibular nerve function within a 1-year follow-up period.

Layered-type α- and γ-In 2 Se 3 crystals were simultaneously grown by chemical vapor transport (CVT) method using ICl 3 as the transport agent. The crystalline state, surface state, and structural polytype of the as-grown In 2 Se 3 were observed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The direct band edges of α- and γ-In 2 Se 3 were evaluated by thermoreflectance (TR) measurements. For α-In 2 Se 3 , a surface oxidation layer α-In 2 Se 3−3 x O 3 x (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) can easily form on the crystal face in environmental air by oxygen detection (∼250 nm/day). The surface formation oxide can be easily removed by laser treatment ( λ = 266 nm, P = 60 mW) and the oxygen detection can be repeated again. For γ-In 2 Se 3 , the HRTEM and Raman measurements reveal amorphous and polycrystalline state existing in the as-grown crystals. The amorphous effect renders erasable optical-memory switching of γ ↔ α inter-phase transition occurred inside the γ-In 2 Se 3 layer with laser heating treatment. The phase transition of In 2 Se 3 is fast and easily by using the laser treatment. The phase transformation of γ ↔ α was verified by Raman and TR measurements. The optical-memory switching and oxygen detection behavior for the as-grown γ- and α-phase In 2 Se 3 are demonstrated herein.
