The aim of the present study was to evaluate, through a Collaborative Fisheries Research (CFR) project, the efficacy of artificial dens as a possible integrative action for the management of O. vulgaris in the wild. Artificial dens, anchored on rocky substrates at a depth of 38–42 m in a temporary Fully Protected Area (FPA) off the western coast of Sardinia (central western Mediterranean Sea), showed their effectiveness as a temporary and/or safe site for Octopus vulgaris spawning. The suitability of these artificial dens was demonstrated by the presence of egg strings and females in parental care, and by the fact that all of the brooding-phases until the hatching had taken place inside. The presence of abundant cobbles, appeared to be a key factor in the building of a solid barrier for protection at the entrance of the spawning artificial dens, similar to those seen in natural dens. In addition, our results demonstrate the potential coexistence of artificial dens with natural ones, suggesting their potential use as integrative tool for the management of O. vulgaris. Close collaboration with fishermen in the framework of a CFR project within FPA may increase the success of this management action, through the enforcement of the area. Brooding details and laid egg features revealed by the monitoring are reported and discussed.

Marine litter is an ever-increasing problem that demands immediate reduction plans and mitigation actions that should act synergically to efficiently meet ambitious goals. Since the seafloor has been recognized as the major sink for marine debris, the study of litter accumulation dynamics represent a fundamental tool to evaluate possible removal actions. We analysed a 7 years (2013–2019) standardized data series collected along Sardinian fishing grounds through MEDiterranean International Trawl Survey, for which estimates of density and weight of seafloor macro-litter were calculated for over 707 hauls. Results show the absence of any temporal trend in seafloor macro-litter density and weight, but rather indicate a spatial and bathymetric segregation of different litter categories. Our data showed how different sources and physical features of macro-litter items (i.e., plastic and fishing gear, rubber, glass, metals, and cloth) led to spatially segregated accumulation hotspots. We also point out here how the identification of seafloor macro-litter hotspots using aggregated data that include plastic items could obscure the identification of other segregated but yet relevant hotspots of other macro-litter categories accumulated in the marine environment. These hotspots often occurred at shallower depths and closer to coastlines, thus representing potential spots where eventual future litter removal action could be prioritized.

Occurrence, abundance and size trends of 25 demersal Chondrichthyes (10 Sharks: 3 Carcharhiniformes, 2 Hexanchiformes, 5 Squaliformes; 14 Batoids: 3 Myliobatiformes, 8 Rajiformes, 3 Torpediniformes and 1 Holocephalan: 1 Chimaeriformes) collected from 22 years (1994–2015) of Mediterranean International Trawl Surveys (MEDITS) around Sardinian seas, were given. Data relative to two strata, the continental shelf (10–200 m), the slope (201–800 m), and the overall (10–800 m), were analyzed in order to identify the general species distribution of their habitat preference. From the gathered data it appeared that the shelf was mostly inhabited by batoids while the slope by sharks. Only the small-spotted catshark Scyliorhinus canicula and the thornback skate Raja clavata were equally distributed with high values of occurrence and abundance both in the shelf and in the slope. All the other species showed a preferential distribution only in one stratum (shelf or slope). In general, temporal trends of abundance indexes were stable or increasing in all strata. GAM analysis also confirmed a stable trend. Almost all species displayed stable in size structure analysis, apart from R. brachyura and Dipturus oxyrinchus that showed a statistically increasing trend. Although the investigated chondrichthyan species seemed to display a not alarming status of conservation in Sardinian seas, more investigation should be done to assure a proper management of this threatened resource.

From late April until mid-June Atlantic bluefin tuna, Thunnus thynnus (Linnaeus, 1758), migrates along the western coast of Sardinia to reach spawning grounds of the Mediterranean. Despite the substantial information on the reproductive biology of the species, the tracking of its reproductive parameters along the migratory pathways is far to be completed. This study provides some reproductive parameters for adult bluefin tuna collected from the last trap fishery Tonnara of the Mediterranean. The following points summarize our results: (i) gonadosomatic index (GI) was positively correlated with fork length (FL) and varied significantly between sexes, having higher values in males; (ii) ovaries contained a mixture of oocyte stages with primary growth oocytes representing 72%, cortical alveoli 16%, primary and secondary vitellogenic stages 4.6% and 6% respectively, only a small proportion of late vitellogenic oocytes and atretic follicles; (iii) batch fecundity was 95–125 oocytes per gram of body mass and varied from 1.6 million for a female of 105 cm FL, to 29.5 million eggs for a 233 cm FL specimen; (iv) sex ratio differed significantly from 1:1, with males being predominant both for the size classes and years analyzed. These findings suggest that bluefin tuna from western Sardinia exhibits intermediate reproductive characteristics between specimens migrating through the Strait of Gibraltar and those from the spawning grounds of the Balearic Islands.

The movements of Octopus vulgaris were investigated by a mark–recapture study (1604 specimens tagged), carried out during a commercial octopus traps fishery, at a depth of 20–50 m, over a rocky substrate area of the Sardinian Sea (central western Mediterranean Sea). Overall 87 specimens (56 males and 31 females) were recaptured after 4 and 63 days from the tagging. The difference between the depth at release and recapture varied up to 5.0 m but in 100% of males and in 80% of females the variation was less than 3.0 m. Theoretical straight distances travelled by recaptures ranged from 9 to 5800 m in males and from 9 to 1700 m in females, regardless of the days of freedom. There was no correlation between distances and sex or body size and no marked orientation was found except for medium males that move preferentially in the south western direction. The movements of O. vulgaris , generally linked to the availability of food, partners and/or shelters, in this study were limited within 1 km in most of the recaptures (84–86%). This high site fidelity, within the rocky area investigated, could represent useful information for management plans of this species like the creation of small no-take areas.

Coleoid cephalopods go through a single breeding period in their life cycle, i.e., they are semelparous, although a great flexibility has been observed in their reproductive strategies, which range from simultaneous terminal spawning over a short period at the end of the animal׳s life to continuous spawning over a long period of the animal׳s life. So far, the information available on deep-sea species reproductive strategies is still poor and most of our knowledge about squid reproduction relates to females. In particular, not much is known on what strategy male squids have evolved to store sperm into spermatophores and adapt to semelparity. In this study an investigation of male reproductive strategy of the deep-sea umbrella squid Histioteuthis bonnellii (Ferussac, 1835) is presented. The reproductive system was examined in 119 males caught in the Sardinian waters (Central Western Mediterranean) and is described for the first time. Results indicate that this species produces and stores spermatophores over a considerable period of time. The total number of spermatophores found in the reproductive system ranged between 12 and 3097 and the size of spermatophores stored by a single individual varied greatly, up to over 300%. Spermatophore length (SpL) gradually decreased towards the distal end of the reproductive system, so that spermatophores found in the proximal part of Needham׳s Sac were larger than those found in the terminal organ. Body size and SpL of spermatophores from the proximal part of Needham׳s Sac were positively correlated. Both indices of the sperm mass and of the ejaculatory apparatus decreased with the increase of SpL, while the cement body index increased, indicating that larger spermatophores contain less sperm and are equipped with larger cement bodies. Up to 64 spermatangia were found, exclusively in the terminal organ. The large size range of mature males (ML: 60.0–198.0 mm; TW: 113.50–2409.00 g) and the variation in spermatophore number and size indicate that in H. bonnellii males the allocation and storage of sperm start early in the individual life and extends in time, while animals continue to grow and produce spermatophores presumably more successful in attaching to female tissues. This pattern enlarges the time window available for reproduction and likely maximizes the percentage of mating success as the animals grow older and chances of mating events become comparatively lower, due to the basic low density of specimens in the deep-sea environment. Both aspects are potentially indicative of adaptation to the deep sea.
