International audience; Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) have been proved to effectively protect and restore fish assemblages. There is mixed evidence regarding the effects of MPAs on benthic assemblages, habitat complexity, and how protection might mediate the effects of habitat features (including biotic and abiotic components) on fish assemblages, with very little information concerning temperate areas. Here, our aim is to assess how protection 1) influences benthic assemblages and habitat complexity, and 2) mediates the effects of habitat complexity on fishes.Using non-destructive methods (photosampling for shallow rocky benthic assemblages, and underwater visual census using strip transects for fish assemblages) to characterize benthic and fish assemblages, we sampled 15 Mediterranean locations, each including protected and unprotected sites. In all, we sampled 90 sites, and analyzed 2,760 photos and 800 replicated transects, gathering information on 44 benthic and 72 fish taxa. Abiotic, biotic and synthetic (i.e. combining the previous two) complexity indices have been computed to synthesize habitat features. Overall, whole benthic assemblages did not significantly differ between protected and unprotected conditions, but higher cover of the ecologically important erect algae belonging to the genus Cystoseira sensu lato was recorded within MPAs. Abiotic, biotic and synthetic complexity did not show clear patterns related to protection levels, displaying inconsistent responses between different locations. Our findings highlight that protection has a generally positive effect on fish biomass, this latter variable responding independently of the habitat complexity.Our study, in conclusion, confirms that MPAs can be effective to protect and restore rocky-reef assemblages, highlighting the need for more in-depth exploration of the mechanisms determining the different responses of benthic taxa to protection and how this can influence the associated fish assemblages.

International audience; On October 1st, 2005, Santa Ana volcano (El Salvador) underwent a VEI 3 phreatomagmatic eruption after approximately one century of rest. Casualties and damages to some of the local infrastructures and surrounding plantations were followed by the evacuation of the nearby communities. The analysis of MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) infrared data reveals that the main explosion was preceded by a one-year-long thermal unrest, associated to the development of a fumaroles field, located at the western rim of the summit crater lake. By combining space-based thermal flux and ground-based measurements (seismicity, sulfur emissions and lake temperatures), we suggest that the activity observed at Santa Ana between 2004 and 2005 was driven by the gradual intrusion of an undegassed magma body at a very shallow depth. Magma injection induced thermal anomalies associated with sustained degassing from the fumaroles field and promoted the interaction between the magmatic-hydrothermal system and the overlying water table. This process culminated into the VEI 3 phreatomagmatic eruption of October 2005 that strongly modified the shallow structure of the crater area. The subsequent three-years-long activity resulted from self-sealing of the fracture system and by the opening of a new fracture network directly connecting the deeper hydrothermal system with the crater lake. Our results show that satellite-based thermal data allow us to detect the expansion of the high-temperature fumarolic field. This may precede an explosive eruption and/or a lava dome extrusion. In particular, we show that thermal records can be analyzed with other geochemical (i.e. SO2 emissions) and geophysical (seismicity) data to track a shallow magmatic intrusion interacting with the surrounding hydrothermal system. This provides a remarkable support for volcano monitoring and eruption forecasting, particularly in remote areas where permanent ground data acquisition is hazardous, expensive and difficult.

This work studies the thermal stability, heat-induced structural deformations, and dehydration/rehydration dynamics of a synthetic high silica mordenite. It is of special interest because this particular phase has proven to be an ideal host for the encapsulation of several kinds of organic molecules making it a promising scaffold for drug delivery. The dehydration process was followed by thermal analysis, infrared spectroscopy in controlled atmosphere, in situ synchrotron XRPD, and structural refinement. Overall, all the results indicate weak interactions of H2O molecules with the silicatic mordenite framework and evidence the presence of hydroxyl groups with different condensation responses at high temperature. Infrared characterization highlighted how the desorption of adsorbed H2O molecules under degassing is already complete at rT. The unit cell parameters exhibit very slow and almost isotropic changes upon heating. Above 550 °C an increase in slope is observed for all parameters. This corresponds to the marked silanol condensation and consequent framework reassessment observed at this temperature by infrared characterization. Overall cell contractions are 0.67%, 1.18%, and 0.81% for a, b, c, respectively and 2.64% for cell volume. HS-MOR undergoes very moderate T induced deformations, indicating a very rigid and stable framework.

We report the results of an in-situ synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction study - performed using silicone oil as 'non-penetrating' pressure transmitting medium - of the elastic behavior of three zeolites with MFI-type framework: the natural zeolite mutinaite and two silicalites (labeled A and B) synthesized under different conditions. While in mutinaite no symmetry change is observed as a function of pressure, a phase transition from monoclinic (P2{sub 1}/n) to orthorhombic (Pnma) symmetry occurs at about 1.0 GPa in the silicalite samples. This phase transition is irreversible upon decompression. The second order bulk moduli of silicalite A and silicalite B, calculated after the fulfillment of the phase transition, are: K{sub 0}=18.2(2) and K{sub 0}=14.3 (2) GPa, respectively. These values makes silicalite the most compressible zeolite among those up to now studied in silicone oil. The structural deformations induced by HP in silicalite A were investigated by means of complete Rietveld structural refinements, before and after the phase transition, at P{sub amb} and 0.9 GPa, respectively. The elastic behaviors of the three MFI-type zeolites here investigated were compared with those of Na-ZSM-5 and H-ZSM-5, studied in similar experimental conditions: the two silicalites - which are the phases with the highest Si/Al ratiosmore » and hence the lowest extraframework contents - show the highest compressibility. International audience; A detailed tephrostratigraphic study supported by stable isotope (δ 18 O) analyses and AMS 14 C dating was carried out on a high sedimentation rate deep-sea core recovered in the northern Ionian Sea. Eight tephra layers were recognised, all originated from explosive eruptions of southern Italian volcanoes. These tephra layers are correlated with terrestrial proximal counterparts and with both marine and lacustrine tephra already known in the central Mediterranean area. The oldest tephra (dated at ca. 19.4 ka cal BP) is tentatively correlated to the Monte Guardia eruption from Lipari Island. Two other rhyolitic tephra layers were correlated with the explosive volcanic activity of Lipari Island: Gabellotto-Fiumebianco/E-1 (8.3 ka cal BP) located close to the interruption of Sapropel S1 deposit, and Monte Pilato (ca. AD 1335) in the uppermost part of the core. The Na-phonolitic composition of the other five recognised tephra layers indicates the Somma-Vesuvius as the source. The composition is quite homogeneous among the five tephra layers, and fits that of the Mercato proximal deposits. Beyond the striking chemical similarity with the Mercato eruption, these tephra layers span over ca. 2000 years, preventing correlation with the single well known Plinian eruption of the Somma-Vesuvius. Therefore, at least two of these tephra layers were assigned to an interplinian activity of the Somma-Vesuvius between the eruptions of Mercato and Avellino, even though these eruptions remains poorly constrained in the proximal area. By contrast, the most prominent tephra layer (2 mm white tephra visible at naked eyes) was found within the S1a Sapropel interval. Despite the possible complication for the presence of similar eruption with different ages we argue that Mercato is probably a very good marker for the onset of sapropelic condition in the Ionian Sea and can be used for land-sea correlations for this important climatic event. More in general, these data allow a significant update of the knowledge of the volcanic ash dispersal from Lipari and Somma-Vesuvius volcanoes.

International audience; Antipatharians (black corals) are major components of mesophotic ecosystems in the Mediterranean Sea. The arborescent species Antipathella subpinnata has received particular attention as it is the most abundant and forms dense forests harbouring high levels of biodiversity. This species is currently categorized as “Near Threatened” in the IUCN Red List, due to increasing fishing pressure and bottom-trawling activities. Yet, the effects of ocean warming have never been investigated for this species, nor for any other antipatharians from temperate regions. Our study aimed at evaluating the effects of increasing seawater temperatures on A. subpinnata, by combining predictive distribution modelling with a physiological tolerance experiment. During the latter, we exposed A. subpinnata for 15 days to different temperature conditions spanning the current seasonal range to forecasted temperatures for 2100, while measuring biological endpoints such as oxygen consumption rates and different signs of stress (tissue necrosis, total antioxidant capacity). Unexpectedly, no stress was found at organism nor cellular level (wide thermal breadth) suggesting low susceptibility of this species to mid-term temperature increase. If the response to the 15-days heat stress is representative of the response to longer-term warming, ocean warming is unlikely to affect A. subpinnata. The species distribution model predicted the presence of A. subpinnata at depths that correspond to temperatures colder than its maximum thermal tolerance (as determined by the physiology experiment). This suggests that the presence of A. subpinnata at shallower depths is not limited by physiological constraints but by other ecological factors including interspecific competition.

Although lithium is widely used in current practice to treat bipolar disorder (BD) and treatment-resistant major depressive disorder (MDD) among older adults, little is known about its efficacy and tolerability in this population, which is generally excluded from randomized clinical trials. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of long-term use of lithium among older adults with BD and MDD.Data from the Cohort of individuals with Schizophrenia and mood disorders Aged 55 years or more (CSA) were used. Two groups of patients with BD and MDD were compared: those who were currently receiving lithium versus those who were not. The effects of lithium on psychiatric (i.e., depressive symptoms severity, perceived clinical severity, rates of psychiatric admissions in the past-year), geriatric (overall and cognitive functioning) and physical outcomes (i.e., rates of non-psychiatric medical comorbidities and general hospital admissions in the past-year) were evaluated. All analyses were adjusted for age, sex, duration of disorder, diagnosis, smoking status, alcohol use, and use of antipsychotics, antiepileptics or antidepressants.Among the 281 older participants with BD or MDD, 15.7% were taking lithium for a mean duration of 12.5(SD = 11.6) years. Lithium use was associated with lower intensity of depressive symptoms, reduced perceived clinical global severity and lower benzodiazepine use (all p 0.05), without being linked to greater rates of medical comorbidities, except for hypothyroidism.Data were cross-sectional and data on lifetime history of psychotropic medications was not assessed.Our results suggest that long-term lithium use may be efficient and relatively well-tolerated in older adults with BD or treatment-resistant MDD.

The Vallerano district in Rome is built on an alluvial valley with a very complex geological setting (highly heterogeneous soil deposits) due to the depositional activity of Tiber River tributaries ongoing since the Pleistocene age. A high-resolution engineering-geological model of the valley was reconstructed through field investigations, boreholes log-stratigraphies and geophysical investigations. 2D FEM numerical modelling of the alluvial valley allowed to assess the local response in terms of seismic wave propagation on surface, amplification function and cumulative kinetic energy. Soil layering and basin effects combine to induce a complex local seismic response. Different typologies of seismic waves are present in the seismograms and surface waves have been also detected. Retrograde Rayleigh surface waves have been identified and extracted through a procedure based on the time-frequency Normalized Inner Product. The spatial analysis of the extracted Rayleigh waves highlights that the local seismic response of the valley is strongly influenced by edge-generated surface waves. The results suggest that amplification is strongly related to the thickness of the soil deposits, whereas the elongated duration is more related to a layered basin structure. The soil layering and the basin effects on the generation of surface waves have been assessed and quantified.

International audience; The paper aims to provide a new field-scale depositional model for the Upper Jurassic Arab Formation, in order to enlarge the stratigraphic and facies architecture knowledge in the onshore Abu Dhabi (UAE). The goal is reached following a threefold workflow structured by: (i) subsurface high-resolution facies analysis; (ii) well correlations; and (iii) paleofacies maps.The facies analysis was based on 540 m of cores and 277 thin sections. Eighteen facies were defined, and were grouped into five facies associations, representative of a shallow marine carbonate ramp succession. The ramp ranges from outer ramp to supratidal and intertidal environments, with a shoal complex protecting a lagoon. A micropaleontological approach helped at defining the field-scale evolution of the different sedimentary environments through time and space. The results were integrated with well log data (Gamma Ray and Density-Neutron Log), and were used to establish the stacking pattern of the Arab Formation. The vertical and lateral distribution of the facies associations in the area of study were highlighted by the well correlations. These latter were useful to generate several new paleofacies maps corresponding to key stratigraphic surfaces identified within the succession. The model reveals different directions of progradation, suggesting a local topographic control on the deposition of the Arab Formation. The cyclical arrangement of the facies associations and the peculiarities of this new model have been discussed at regional scale, suggesting a new paleogeographic scenario.

The Ivrea crustal section from the Italian-Swiss Alps is a nearly coherent section of the pre-Alpine, lower to upper continental crust, which became part of a passive continental margin in the Middle Jurassic. Here we apply the U Pb rutile thermochronometer to amphibolites collected along mid levels of the Ivrea section, in order to improve the understanding of the thermal evolution of extending continental margins. Relict rutile in the Monte Gambarogno amphibolite lens from the northeastern Ivrea crustal section provided a Permian age (284 ± 24 Ma). On the other hand, an Upper Triassic (215 ± 6 Ma) age was acquired for relict rutile in the Alpe Morello amphibolite lens, which is exposed along the southwestern Ivrea crustal section. We attribute these ages to U Pb isotope re-equilibration of rutile crystallized in pre-Permian times, in response to two distinct heating events. The first is related to the Lower Permian post-Variscan extension and is inferred to have reset the U Pb system of rutile from middle and deep levels of the whole Ivrea crustal section. The subsequent thermal perturbation of Upper Triassic age is most likely related to the onset of the rifting process that ultimately led to crustal breakup in the Middle Jurassic. We propose that the latter heating event was not able to disturb the U Pb system of middle crustal rutile along the future proximal domain of the extending continental margin.

Emission of volcanic gas is thought to be the dominant process by which volatiles transit from the deep earth to the atmosphere. Volcanic gas emissions, remain poorly constrained, and volcanoes of Peru are entirely absent from the current global dataset. In Peru, Sabancaya and Ubinas volcanoes are by far the largest sources of volcanic gas. Here, we report the first measurements of the compositions and fluxes of volcanic gases emitted from these volcanoes. The measurements were acquired in November 2015. We determined an average SO 2 flux of 15.3 ± 2.3 kg s − 1 (1325-ton day − 1 ) at Sabancaya and of 11.4 ± 3.9 kg s − 1 (988-ton day − 1 ) at Ubinas using scanning ultraviolet spectroscopy and dual UV camera systems. In-situ Multi-GAS analyses yield molar proportions of H 2 O, CO 2 , SO 2 , H 2 S and H 2 gases of 73, 15, 10 1.15 and 0.15 mol% at Sabancaya and of 96, 2.2, 1.2 and 0.05 mol% for H 2 O, CO 2 , SO 2 and H 2 S at Ubinas. Together, these data imply cumulative fluxes for both volcanoes of 282, 30, 27, 1.2 and 0.01 kg s − 1 of H 2 O, CO 2 , SO 2 , H 2 S and H 2 respectively. Sabancaya and Ubinas volcanoes together contribute about 60% of the total CO 2 emissions from the Central Volcanic zone, and dominate by far the total revised volatile budget of the entire Central Volcanic Zone of the Andes.

International audience; The origin of highly evolved magmas (e.g. rhyolites) has been a long-standing controversy in earth sciences. They are commonly thought to be generated in the upper crust by melt extraction from mush zones, but due to the rapid cooling of magma reservoirs in such shallow and typically cold environments, high magma emplacement rates of intermediate magmas are thought to be necessary to maintain large silicic mushes above the solidus long enough for the high-SiO2 melts extraction to occur. Late-stage redistribution of interstitial melts (i.e. heat and mass) by channels/dikes within those mushes has been invoked as a mechanism to preserve silicic mushes above their solidi for longer periods (i.e. delaying their final crystallization), but the nature of this process and its implications on plutons zonation are still poorly understood.Here, using time-dependent numerical modeling, we study the feasibility of late-stage interstitial melt extraction/redistribution by channels/dikes from a crystalline mush. Our model accounts for magma fluid dynamics, extraction of residual melts and thermal evolution of the crystallizing magma system and its hosting rocks, considering the thermal effect of the redistributing material. The model was applied to explain the anatomy of the well-documented La Gloria pluton (LGP, Central Chile), which exhibits increasing contents of SiO2 and abundant leucocratic dikes toward the margins, interpreted as trapped residual melts generated elsewhere in the magma chamber.Our results suggest that favorable conditions for extracting late-stage residual melts are reached at temperatures of ~ 750 °C (60 vol% crystallinity), at least for compositions similar to LGP dikes. Simulations correspond to 30 kyr of reservoir cooling, when the concentric compositional zonation of LGP is reproduced after a short period of extraction (< 15 kyr) and outward redistribution of silicic melt, with an extracted mass fraction of up to 0.17. An inward growing crystal-dominated domain is the main source of interstitial melts. A total extracted melt volume of ~ 7.5 km3 and a mean extraction rate of ~ 0.5 km3/kyr were calculated for LGP conditions. For small magma reservoirs, the extracted rhyolitic melt could reach the upper levels of the magma chamber and the overlying host rock, but it seems unlikely that it can reach the surface to feed large rhyolitic eruptions, at least once recharges have stopped.

International audience; Sexual steroids influence reproductive behaviours and promote secondary sexual traits. In male lizards,increasing levels of testosterone (T) bolster conspicuous colouration, stimulate territoriality, and triggerantagonistic interactions among rivals. Moreover, in colour polymorphic species, reproductive strategy,aggressiveness and T levels can differ between morphs. Therefore, T level is considered as an importantmechanism that regulates the expression of colour polymorphism and sexual behaviours of males. But inthe polymorphic territorial wall lizard (Podarcis muralis), a lack of relationship between morphs andaggressiveness challenges the notion that T plays such a role. To examine this issue, we compared adultT levels among three colour morphs (white, yellow and red) through repeated sampling during themating season. High T levels were observed at the onset of the mating season followed by a significantdecrease, a pattern documented in other lizard species. Mean T levels did not differ among morphs.However, yellow males maintained significantly higher T levels over time and displayed a stronger subsequentdecline. Overall, in this species, seasonal T patterns differ among morphs, not mean values.Previous studies revealed that T suppresses the immune response; suggesting that a strong initial investmentpromoted by high T levels may trade-off against immunity (maintenance). Further experimentalinvestigations are required to clarify the relationship between T and reproductive effort in polymorphicspecies that exhibit complex temporal pattern of T levels.

International audience; Understanding the development of foreland-foredeep systems and the influence exerted by pre-existing structures on their evolution is an important step for defining the key factors that control long-term basin and lithosphere dynamics, comprehending the associated seismic hazard and assessing their economic potential in the domain of hydrocarbon exploration.The Po Valley is a rather unique foreland basin for two major reasons: a) it developed intermittently at the front of two different mountain chains, the Northern Apennines and the Southern Alps, progressively converging one towards the other; b) the inherited structures, mainly derived from the Mesozoic extensional tectonics, are oriented at high angle to the advancing belts. The coexistence of these two factors and their various implications make the Po Valley basin a complex case study that deserves attention.Taking advantage of the recent building of a 3D structural model across the region, we reconstructed the possible geometry and migration pattern of the Tertiary basins that developed at the front of the Northern Apennines and the Southern Alps, as part of the Po Valley tectonic evolution. In addition, a number of sections sliced from the 3D model across selected domains have then been used to restore the present-day structural units to their pre-compressional setting, while highlighting the key stages of their geological history.Results from the model analysis show that the Mesozoic extension-related tectonics and the associated carbonate facies geometry and distribution localized and constrained the Alpine structures inside/around the basin. Their control on the Cenozoic deformation and sedimentation is evident during the Paleogene and the Miocene whereas it becomes more subtle during the Plio-Pleistocene when lithospheric-scale mechanisms need to be invoked.Notwithstanding the model uncertainties and its explicit regional significance, our results may be taken as reference for any foreland-foredeep setting worldwide, especially in complex systems where tectono-sedimentary inhomogeneity is spatially and temporally dominant.

Since the discovery of the ancient harbor of Naples in 2004 during construction work on an underground railway, geoarchaeological studies undertaken on the archaeological excavation have revealed the main stratigraphic and paleo-environmental levels of the harbor site near the Piazza Municipio. However, knowledge of the dynamics and paleoenvironmental changes in the water column of the harbor, as well as the processes of transport and deposition of sediments that led to siltation and infilling of the harbor basin, has been lacking due to the absence of high-resolution data. To fill these gaps, we have undertaken a threedimensional study (longitudinal, transverse and vertical) of the harbor deposits by carrying out geochemical and sedimentological analyses of four stratigraphic sections of the archaeological excavation. The results show that after a phase of relative calm during the first half of the 1st c. AD, siltation of the harbor progressed exponentially up to the 5th c. AD, when dredging operations were carried out to obtain a water level sufficient for the development of maritime and harbor activities. We attribute this acceleration of siltation to a combination of climatic, anthropic and volcanic factors. Volcanic activity was responsible for a high-energy, tsunami-type event during the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. From the 5th c. AD onwards, the harbor basin of Neapolis does not appear to have been functional as evidenced by its transformation into a lagoon following coastal progradation. The last stage of infilling was the development of a flood-dominated fan delta under the combined influences of climatic cooling in the Early Medieval Cool Period and agro-pastoral activities in the catchment area of the harbor. Several generations of paleo-channels, containing flash flood deposits, as well as sheet wash from sheet floods, are indicative of high environmental instability in this period.

International audience; The Messinian Salinity Crisis (MSC) is a controversial geological event that influenced the Mediterranean Basin in the late Miocene leaving behind a widespread Salt Giant. Today, more than 90% of the Messinian evaporitic deposits are located offshore, buried below the Plio-Quaternary sediments and have thus been studied mainly by marine seismic reflection imaging. Onshore-offshore records’ comparisons and correlations should be considered a key approach to progress in our understanding of the MSC.This approach has however not been widely explored so far. Indeed, because of the erosion on the Messinian continental shelves and slopes during the MSC, only few places in the Mediterranean domain offers the opportunity to compare onshore and offshore records that have been preserved from erosion. In this paper, we compare for the first time the MSC records from two basins that were lying at intermediate water depths during the MSC and in which salt layers emplaced in topographic lows: the Central Mallorca Depression (CMD) in the Balearic Promontory, and the Caltanissetta Basin (CB) in Sicily. The reduced tectonic movements in the CMD since the late Miocene (Messinian) till recent days, favored the conservation of most of the MSC records in a configuration relatively close to their original configuration, thus allowing a comparison with the reference records outcropping in Sicily. We perform seismic interpretation of a wide seismic reflection dataset in the study area with the aim of refining the mapping of the Messinian units covering the Balearic Promontory (BP) and restituting their depositional history based on a detailed comparison with the Messinian evaporitic units of the Sicilian Caltanissetta Basin. We discuss how this history matches with the existing 3-stages chrono-stratigraphic model. We show that the Messinian units of Central Mallorca Depression could be an undeformed analog of those outcropping on-land in the Sicilian Caltanissetta Basin, thus questioning the contemporaneous onset of the salt deposition on the Mediterranean scale. We show a change in seismic facies at a certain range of depth between stage 1 MSC units, and wonder if this could reflect the threshold/maximum depth of deposition of bottom growth PLG selenites passing more distally to pelagic snowfall cumulate gypsum. Moreover, we confirm that PLG could be deposited in water depths exceeding 200m.

International audience; The building of oceanic crust at Oceanic Core Complexes (OCC) has been described as a complex process involving multiple intrusions of magma over a protracted period of time. The migration of primitive magmas (i.e., Mid Ocean Ridge Basalts, MORBs) can lead to melt-rock interactions during reactive porous flow processes through the lithosphere. The timescales of these reactive processes and the subsequent cooling of the modified crystal matrix remain unconstrained. Diffusion modelling has beenwidely used to retrieve timescales of magmatic processes. In this study, we use diffusion models to constrain (i) the minimum timescales of melt-rock interactions and (ii) the cooling rates of the gabbroic sequence forming the oceanic crust at an OCC.We chose samples of the most primitive olivine-rich troctolites fromthe gabbroic sequence sampled in IODP Hole U1309D (AtlantisMassif OCC, Mid-Atlantic Ridge 30°N). Olivine-rich troctolites were interpreted as marking local partial assimilation of mantle intervals into the oceanic crust, and thus allowed to understand the dynamics of mantle assimilation and the formation of slow-spreading oceanic crust at the Atlantis Massif OCC. Olivines in olivine-rich troctolites represent relicts of pre-existing mantle olivine, while clinopyroxenes and plagioclases are crystallized during reactive percolation. Olivine chemical compositions show that olivine-rich troctolites inherit chemical heterogeneity from the mantle precursor. Flat geochemical profiles in olivine indicate complete chemical re-equilibration of olivine crystals with the locally modified percolating melt. Exception is made for most Ca profiles that show lower Ca contents at the olivine rim compared to the relative crystal core, as the result of subsolidus cooling. Three-dimensional (3D) diffusion models at magmatic conditions (T = 1210–1300 °C and P = 2 kbar) reveal that complete chemical re-equilibration of 4 mm-size mantle-derived olivine with percolating MORB-type melts can be attained within durations of less than 300 yr. The Ca-in-olivine geospeedometer reveal that cooling rates from ~1200 °C to ~1050 °C are constant downhole and on average 0.004 °C/yr; they are comparable with lower temperature cooling rates (850 °C–250 °C) estimated at the AtlantisMassif OCC. The minimumtimescales from 3D models point to rather fast re-equilibration of olivine. The downhole chemical heterogeneity inherited from the precursor mantle, coupled with the timescales of diffusive re-equilibration suggest that the partial assimilation of the upwelling mantle and its incorporation into the oceanic crust occurred in the time-frame of a single melt input. Our cooling data are consistentwith building of the oceanic crust at OCCs controlled by continuous uplift, in turn governed by long-lived detachment faults. The latter contribute to the rapid cooling of the assimilated mantle intervals and the magma bodies. Diffusion models of geochemical profiles in olivine from a single crustal section allow to reconstitute the early magmatic processes leading to mantle assimilation and early crystallization of gabbros, and the cooling history of the oceanic crust at OCC from magmatic conditions to hydrothermalism.

Crystallization experiments on two pantellerites from Pantelleria, Italy, provide new evidence for the relationships between mineral phases in pantelleritic rocks as well as the influence of temperature and redox conditions on mineral assemblages. Experiments were performed at 1 kbar with temperature ranging between 750–900°C, and fluid saturation conditions with XH2O (=H2O/H2O+CO2) between 0 and 1. Redox conditions were fixed at, or slightly below, the FMQ buffer. Results show that at temperature of 900 °C pantelleritic magmas are well above the liquidus regardless their water content; we also observed a decrease in liquidus temperature (800°C) with increasingly reducing conditions. Mineral assemblages of the natural rocks have been successfully reproduced, particularly the relationship between fayalite and aenigmatite, which appear to be strongly controlled by melt peralkalinity, temperature and redox conditions. This is the first time that fayalitic olivine have been synthetized in experimental studies on pantellerites, which was found to be stable only for temperatures ≥750°C while amphibole can be stable at temperatures as high as 800°C at high fF2. Experimental results have been compared with the composition of mineral phases as well as with the results obtained from mineral equilibrium, geothermometry, and oxygen barometry studies on pantelleritic lava and tuffs from Pantelleria (Italy), Eburru (Kenya) and Menengai (Kenya). Petrological characteristics appear similar at different locations worldwide, with typical assemblages of anorthoclase and sodian clinopyroxene with variable fayalite, aenigmatite, Fe-Ti oxides and amphibole.

International audience; The relationships between volcanic activity and tectonics at the southernmost termination of the Main Ethiopian Rift (MER), East Africa, still represent a debated problem in the MER evolution. New constraints on the timing, evolution and characteristics of the poorly documented volcanic activity of the Dilo and Mega volcanic fields (VF), near the Kenya-Ethiopia border are here presented and discussed. The new data delineate the occurrence of two distinct groups of volcanic rocks: 1) Pliocene subalkaline basalts, observed only in the Dilo VF, forming a lava basement faulted during a significant rifting phase; 2) Quaternary alkaline basalts, occurring in the two volcanic fields as pyroclastic products and lava flows issued from monogenetic edifices and covering the rift-related faults. 40Ar/39Ar dating constrains the emplacement time of the large basal lava plateau to ~3.7 Ma, whereas the youngest volcanic activity characterising the two areas dates back to 134 ka (Dilo VF) to as recent as the Holocene (Mega VF). Volcanic activity developed along tectonic lineaments independent from those of the rift. No direct relations are observed between the Pliocene, roughly N-S-trending major boundary faults of the Ririba rift and the NE-SW-oriented structural trend characteristic of the Quaternary volcanic activity. We speculate that this change in structural trend may be the expression of (1) inherited crustal structures affecting the distribution of the recent volcanic vents, and (2) a local stress field controlled by differences in crustal thickness, following a major episode of reorganization of extensional structures in the region due to rift propagation and abandonment

Detailed stratigraphic, sedimentary facies and palaeosol analyses were performed on an outcrop on Late Quaternary deposits in the coastal area of Tuscany. The outcrop was selected as representative of one of the major Quaternary alluvial fan complexes of Central Italy, the ancient Cecina river fan, and as showing contrasting, if related, palaeosols. The oldest relic palaeosol was identified as an Ultisol, representative of the most developed soil type normally found as relic soil in Italy, and about whose possible ages only approximate interpretations presently exist. OSL dating set the whole succession of sediments, palaeosols and geomorphic surfaces into a firm chronological setting. As a result, evolution of the Cecina fan complex in Late Pleistocene could be fully reconstructed. Assessment of the age of the relic Ultisol produced results contrasting with current interpretations, showing how such a soil type can have developed in Italian conditions in a relatively short time, i.e. since about MIS 5d.

International audience; We evaluate the topographic evolution of the southwestern Alps using Eocene to Pleistocene pollen data combined with existing sedimentological, petrographic and detrital geo-and thermochronological data. We report 32 new pollen analyses from 10 sites completed by an existing dataset of 83 samples from 14 localities situated across the southwestern Alps, including both the pro-and the retro-foreland basins. The presence of microthermic tree pollen (mainly Abies, Picea) indicates that this part of the mountain belt attained elevations over 1900 m as early as the Oligocene. Inferred rapid surface uplift during the mid-Oligocene coincided with a previously documented brief phase of rapid erosional exhumation, when maximum erosion rates may have reached values of up to 1.5–2km/Myr. Slower long-term average exhumation rates of ∼0.3km/Myr since the Late Oligocene helped maintaining the high Alpine topography of the southwestern Alps until today. The relative abundances of meso-microthermic tree pollen (Cathaya, Cedrusand Tsuga) and microthermic tree pollen (Abies, Picea) in the pro-and retro-foreland basin deposits, indicate that the present-day asymmetric topography, with a relatively gentle western flank and steeper eastern flank, was established early in the southwestern Alps, at least since

International audience; Foraminifera and ostracods have been quantitatively studied in core MD01-2472, from the upper continental slope (at water depth of 501 m), to evaluate their relationship with bottom water condition variability and decipher the control of the Levantine Intermediate Water (LIW) current on benthic faunas. The occurrence of reworked ostracod species (originating from the continental shelf) and, the presence of shallow water Elphidium/Ammonia benthic foraminifera are used to estimate the degree of along-slope transport at the core site. This has revealed two intervals of along-slope transport also associated with coarse-grained contourite deposits, deposited during the YD and HS2 episodes. Planktonic-benthic foraminiferal and ostracod assemblages reflect climate oscillations. Peaks of the polar planktonic Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (left-coiling S) may be used to identify Heinrich Events. Interstadials are marked by abundant ostracod species such as Paracypris sp., Argilloecia acuminata, and Cytheropteron alatum and the presence of benthic foraminifera like Bulimina marginata, Bulimina costata and Gyroidina altiformis. The B–A and Holocene are characterized by abundant warm water species of planktonic foraminifera and by the ostracod species Polycope sp. We hypothesize that there is relationship between LIW intensification during cold rapid climate events and benthic fauna assemblage variations due to changes in: 1) bottom water ventilation; and 2) the export of nutrients and/or sediment particles by bottom currents.

International audience; High-pressure metamorphic rocks exhumed in mountain belts provide a unique window on deep processes at subduction zones, such as the progressive transformation of blueschist into eclogite, which has important geochemical and geophysical implications, along with information on their exhumation mechanism. We provide a detailed characterization of the field and metamorphic relationships between blueschist- and eclogite-facies terranes of Alpine Corsica (France), where both primary, pre-subduction structures and Alpine high-pressure assemblages are very well preserved. We then compare our data with available observations from the Western Alps. Altogether, these data show systematic metamorphic patterns across the blueschist–eclogite boundary: temperature increases progressively without any gap across the contact, whereas a significant pressure jump (ca. 0.4 GPa) is observed. Lithostratigraphy in the two units suggests that they belong to two different types of oceanic (or transitional) crust, structures of which may have controlled their different mechanisms of decollement, accretion and exhumation. Lastly, the comparison of the exhumed terranes in Alpine belts with structures of modern analogues in present-day oceans, such as large detachment faults and oceanic core-complexes, stresses the importance of inherited extensional structures for subduction, exhumation and orogenic processes.

Spring waters issuing from serpentinized ultramafic rocks of the Taro-Ceno Valleys (Northern Apennine, Emilia-Romagna region, Italy) were analyzed for major element, trace element and dissolved gas concentrations and ?11B, ?7Li, ?18O(H2O), ?2H(H2O), ?13C(CH4) and ?2H(CH4) isotope compositions. Similar to other springs worldwide that issue from serpentinites, the chemical composition of the waters evolves with water-rock interaction from Ca-HCO3, through Mg-HCO3 and ultimately to a hyperalkaline Na-(Ca)-OH composition. Most of the Ca- and Mg-HCO3 springs have ?11B ranging between +16.3? and +23.7?, consistent with the range of low P-T serpentinites. Very high ?11B in two springs from Mt. Prinzera (PR10: +39?; PR01: +43?) can be related to isotopic fractionation during secondary phase precipitation, as also inferred from ?7Li values. In contrast to typical abiogenic isotope signatures of CH4 from serpentinized rocks, dissolved CH4 from the Taro-Ceno hyperalkaline springs has an apparent biotic (thermogenic and/or mixed thermogenic-microbial) signature with ?13C(CH4) ranging from -57.5? to -40.8?, which is similar to that of hydrocarbons from production wells and natural seeps in adjacent hydrocarbon systems. The data suggest that CH4 in the hyperalkaline springs investigated in this study may derive from organic matter of the sedimentary (flysch and arenaceous) formations underlying the ophiolite unit. However, small amounts of H2 were detected in one hyperalkaline spring (PR10), but for two springs with very low CH4 concentrations (PR01 and UM15) the ?2H value could not be measured, so the occurrence of some abiotic CH4 cannot be excluded. The occurrence of thermogenic CH4 in ophiolites may be a widespread phenomenon, and thus the characterization of serpentinization-related gases requires accurate evaluation of the regional context including a careful knowledge of the relationships with surrounding sedimentary rocks and their hydrocarbon potential.

International audience; Concretions of various compositions are common in the Paleozoic terrigenous successions of the north Gondwana margin. This study focuses on phosphatic (P) and siliceous (Si) concretions present in some successions of the Armorican Massif (NW France) and SW Sardinia (W Italy). It shows that they consist of mudstones, fine- to very fine-grained sandstones or shellbeds with a more or less abundant P-cement and form a continuum between a phosphatic end-member and a siliceous biogenic end-member. The P2O5 contents are ranging from 0.26% to 21.5% and are related to apatite. The SiO2 contents vary from 25% to 82% and are linked both to a terrigenous phase and to a biogenic silica phase. Concretions showing the lower P-contents (P2O5b1.5%) are often enriched in biogenic silica (SiO2/Al2O3>5). Comparison with the surrounding sediments shows that all the concretions are enriched in chlorite and in Middle Rare Earth Elements (Las/Gds: 0.12-0.72) and some of them in Y (up to 974 ppm), Rare Earth Elements (more than 300 ppm) and Sr (260-880 ppm). The concretions with highest biogenic silica concentrations are contained in the outer shelf sediments whereas the other concretions are present fromthe proximal part of the inner shelf to the outer shelf. A geneticmodel in two stages is proposed. During early diagenesis, the dissolution of shells and degradation of organicmatter progressively enrich the pore water in dissolved Si, Ca and P.When the suboxic zone is reached, P-precipitation begins, leading to the formation of protoconcretions. In shallow environments, the relative permeability of sediments and the winnowing or reworking of the upper few centimetres by bottom currents allow for suboxic conditions to be maintained, leading to P-rich concretion formation. In deeper environments, the anoxic zone is reached more rapidly, thereby preventing extensive phosphogenesis. Nevertheless in the protoconcretions the early P-cement preserves pore spaces from compaction. In the presence of biogenic siliceous particles, the fluids are enriched in dissolved silica and diffuse towards the protoconcretions. Silica precipitation can thus occur later in the intergranular spaces.

A palaeolandscape reconstruction of the Southern Apennine chain for the late Early and the Middle Pleistocene is presented with the main aim of highlighting the evolution of this sector of the chain during a key-period for the diffusion of Palaeolithic humans in the Italian peninsula. During the Calabrian stage (1.8–0.78 Ma) Italy was an elongated peninsula, narrower than present, extended between the Tyrrhenian and the foreland seas with two big islands (nowadays Gargano and Murge) in the central part of the foredeep basin. This area started to emerge at the end of Early Pleistocene (1.2–0.78 Ma) when occasional communications among the islands and the Southern Apennine peninsula may have occurred, probably in conjunction with eustatic low-stands. This scenario opens interesting questions on the migration pathways followed by ancient Palaeolithic humans to reach the site of Pirro Nord (1.6–1.3 Ma; NW Gargano). The definitive emersion of the studied area was completed at the beginning of the Ionian stage when several lakes punctuated the axial portion of the chain together with two great active volcanoes: Roccamonfina and Vulture. In the surroundings of the palaeo-lakes, Palaeolithic humans started moving from 600 to 200 ka, as indicated by the artefacts of Acheulean tradition recovered, among others, at Isernia La Pineta and Notarchirico.

International audience; A new Early Cretaceous, late Aptian plant assemblage collected near the village of Cusano Mutri in the southern Apennines (Campania, Italy) is examined. The fossils consist mainly of impressions and compressions of sterile foliage shoots and reproductive structures of conifers, and a few angiosperm leaves. Cuticular analyses are provided. The genera Cupressinocladus, Pagiophyllum, Araucarites, Frenelopsis and Montsechia are documented. The occurrence of Montsechia vidalii outside of Spain is recorded for the first time. A description of a new cheirolepidiacean species, Frenelopsis cusanensis is supplied and macroscopical and cuticular characters as seen under light and scanning electron microscopes are given. Xeromorphic features displayed by almost all taxa suggest semi-arid or arid conditions in a subtropical or tropical climate. The floral assemblage displays a strong affinity with the Euro-Sinian Province of the Northern Hemisphere, which is confirmed by the absence of typical Gondwanan representatives. The discovery of this new late Aptian flora in the Apenninic Carbonate Platform domain and its palaeoecological significance provide new insights into the relationships between the platform and the mainland within the Early Cretaceous Tethyan realm

A new black quaternary oxide Sr 5 BiNi 2 O 9.6 was synthesized by solid state reaction at 1200 °C. Its structure was solved by electron crystallography and X-ray powder refinement, yielding a tetragonal structure with space group I 4/ mmm , a =5.3637 (2) A, c =17.5541(5) A, Z =4. The structure can be described as a stacking of (Bi,Sr)–O rocksalt slabs and SrNiO 3− δ perovskite slabs. The initial nickel valence is close to +3.1. Thermogravimetry and high-temperature oxygen coulometry showed that this compound has variable oxygen content as a function of temperature and oxygen pressure, and ultimately decomposes when heated in low oxygen pressure above 800 °C. It is a metallic conductor with n-type conduction. Its thermoelectric power was determined and found to be −20 and −38 μV/K at 300 and 650 °C, respectively. Magnetic measurements confirm the nickel valence close to +3 and show evidence of magnetic ordering at 20 K.

The present study focuses on new palaeobotanical data (pollen, phytoliths and fruits) from three of the oldest Early Palaeolithic sites in Eurasia (Dmanisi in Georgia, Ca’ Belvedere di Monte Poggiolo in Italy and Pont-de-Lavaud in France). The main aim is to examine the ecological factors associated with the first human dispersals out of Africa into Eurasia. The palaeoecological data are discussed with regards to chronology and geographical location of the settlements. The vegetation pattern of each site consists of temperate Eurasian and Mediterranean taxa, subtropical trees being more or less recorded depending on climatic and geographic features. The new palaeobotanical data show that different vegetation structures occurred between the first human dispersal in Caucasus and the later dispersals in western Eurasia. However, in all cases hominins seemed to be adapted to temperate ecosystems. In Caucasus, human occupation took place at 1.7 Ma in a forest-steppe environment, while at ca 1 Ma human populations occupied various settings such as open landscapes or dense forests. These data suggest that during the Early Pleistocene, human populations evolved and dispersed in western Eurasia, gradually increasing their degree of adaptation to diversified environments.

International audience; A Late Ordovician benthic assemblage containing trilobites (Colpocoryphe, Onnia) and diploporid echinoderms (Aristocystites) taxa that are usually typical of open shelf environments is preserved in protected marine settings in the lower part of the Kermeur Formation (Armorican Massif, NW France). A facies analysis carried out on the Veryac'h section (Crozon Peninsula) allows identification of four sedimentary facies (SF), ranging from the bay/lagoon domain (SF1 and SF2) to the back-barrier (SF3) and barrier (SF4) domains. A benthic fauna comprising of trilobites, brachiopods and diploporids is found in the SF1 and SF2. In SF1, fossils are randomly scattered in sediments (taphofacies 1, TF1) showing two different preservation stages: TF1a with complete articulated skeletons and TF1b with disarticulated shells. These two preservation stages can be related either to the different modes of life of the taxa (i.e., recumbent, burrowing or nektobenthic) or to a composite assemblage with both autochthonous and allochthonous taxa. In this benthic assemblage, some trilobites and echinoderms taxa are mostly preserved either as complete exoskeletons and exuviae (Colpocoryphe grandis) or complete thecae (Aristocystites sp.), indicating an autochthonous origin. These taxa are usually found in low-energy open shelf settings. Their occurrence in a protected environment results from the combination of both allocyclic factors (i.e., change in sea level) and local conditions (i.e., shelf morphology, environmental conditions). Indeed, the lower part of the Kermeur Formation was deposited during a transgressive phase following a significant sea-level fall (Sandbian-Katian boundary). During the transgressive phase, barrier-lagoon systems were formed on the flat surface inherited from the sandbian shelf. Under non-restricted ecological conditions (i.e., normal oxygenation and salinity) in the protected settings, the new ecological niches were suitable for benthic organisms accustomed to open shelf environments. The settlement of these open shelf benthic species in coastal and protected environments may represent an offshore-onshore expansion, contrary to that described in the onshore-offshore diversification model of Phanerozoic shelf communities (Jablonski et al., 1983; Sepkoski, 1991).

International audience; New major and trace element data and (40)Ar/(39)Ar plateau ages constrain the timing, duration and time-related geochemical evolution of the Central Atlantic magmatic province in the U.S.A. (Newark and Culpeper basins) and refine correlations with basaltic lava flows from other Late Triassic-Early Jurassic circum-Atlantic basins. The precise, statistically robust (40)Ar/(39)Ar plateau ages were obtained on biotite and on fresh plagioclase and calculated using the latest (40)K decay constants. These ages are supported by a general consistency of the Ca/K calculated from (37)Ar/(39)Ar of the plateau steps and the Ca/K obtained by detailed electron microprobe analyses on plagioclase phenocrysts. The ages of five analyzed basalt lava flows, from all three lava flow units in the Newark basins, and the ages of two sill samples are indistinguishable, indicating a brief magmatic peak phase at 201.8 +/- 0.7 Ma. Recalibrated (40)Ar/(39)Ar plateau ages from the entire province indicate a near-synchronous onset and peak volcanic activity at the Triassic-Jurassic boundary within the circum-Atlantic basins from the U.S.A., Canada and Morocco. The early erupted magmas (Moroccan Lower to Upper basalts, the Fundy basin North Mountain Basalt, and Orange Mountain and equivalent U.S.A. flows) yield an enriched geochemical signature (e.g., with relatively high La/Yb), whereas late magmas in the U.S.A. (Hook Mountain and Hampden basalts) and Morocco (Recurrent basalt) yield relatively depleted geochemical compositions (low La/Yb). A slight, but significant age difference for eruption of Hook Mountain and Hampden basalts (200.3 +/- 0.9 Ma) and Recurrent basalts (198.2 +/- 1.1 Ma) is interpreted as evidence of a diachronous northward rift-drift transition during break-up of Pangea. Our data indicate also a prolonged intrusive sequence that continued until about 195 Ma at the Palisades sill and is consistent with sporadic late CAMP magmatism for dykes from the south-eastern U.S.A. and for intrusions from Guinea.

European terrestrial vertebrate sites of the Upper Paleocene-Lower Eocene deposits are predominantly known from the central and eastern parts of the Paris Basin. However, several outcrops covering this interval are scattered along the Upper Normandy coast, in the western part of the Paris Basin. Here we report the discovery of a new terrestrial vertebrate site in the Mortemer Formation, at the top of the cliffs of Sotteville-sur-Mer in Upper Normandy, France. The vertebrate level is situated about 1.5. m above the onset of the Paleocene-Eocene Carbon Isotope Excursion (CIE) based on dispersed organic carbon and is therefore Earliest Eocene in age. The vertebrate fauna is composed of fish, amphibians, lizards and mammals, including the earliest peradectid marsupials and paromomyid plesiadapiform of Europe. A diverse and rich charophyte flora is well represented throughout the lower part of the outcrop and allows the conclusion that the CIE falls in the Peckichara disermas biozone. La plupart des sites à vertébrés terrestres du Paléocène supérieur-Eocène inférieur d'Europe sont connus du Centre et de l'Est du Bassin de Paris. Cependant, plusieurs affleurements de cet intervalle de temps sont éparpillés le long de la côte en Haute-Normandie dans l'Ouest du Bassin de Paris. Dans cet article, nous faisons état de la découverte d'un nouveau site à vertébrés terrestres dans la Formation de Mortemer, au sommet des falaises de Sotteville-sur-Mer en Haute-Normandie, France. Le niveau à vertébrés est situé environ 1,5. m au-dessus du point initial de l'Excursion Isotopique du Carbone de la limite Paléocène-Eocène (CIE), mise en évidence à partir du carbone organique dispersé. Il est donc daté de l'Eocène basal. La faune de vertébrés comprend des poissons, des amphibiens, des lézards et des mammifères dont les plus anciens marsupiaux peradectidés et le plus ancien plésiadapiforme paromomyidé d'Europe. Une flore riche et variée de charophytes, bien distribuée le long de la partie inférieure de l'affleurement permet de préciser que la CIE est située dans la biozone à Peckichara disermas.

We present major and trace element data of olivine (Fo86–91) — hosted melt inclusions from five Island Arc Basalt (IAB) lavas from Marsili seamount, a large volcano in the active Marsili back-arc basin of the Southern Tyrrhenian. The geochemical composition of this suite of melt inclusions varies widely, extending the range of variation of the host lavas and providing further insights into the mantle components entering the melting region under the Marsili volcano. The trace element trends defined by melt inclusions with compositions similar to the host rock confirm the involvement of two different mantle domains, affected by different degree of subduction-related metasomatism. Melt inclusions generated from the ambient MORB mantle wedge are depleted in incompatible trace elements and show a pronounced subduction signature, resembling the Marsili IAB-group 2 lavas. Melt inclusions derived from heterogeneous mantle, where small blobs of an OIB enriched component are also involved in the melting, are less depleted in incompatible trace element, and are geochemically similar to the Marsili IAB-group 1 lavas. The olivine-hosted melt inclusions with a composition different to that of the host rock reveal two further distinct geochemical signatures. One signature resembles that of the OIB-like lavas from the nearby Ustica Island, and is also alike to that of the few OIB-like lavas so far recovered from the Marsili volcano. However, the Marsili OIB-like melt inclusions are richer in SiO2, TiO2, Na2O, Zr, Y and HREE and depleted in CaO relative to these OIB-like lavas, suggesting an origin by melting of trachyandesitic bodies in the lower lithospheric mantle, which are themselves formed by high pressure fractional crystallization of parental OIB-like melts. The other detected signature is similar to that of the MORB lavas recording the early ocean-formation stage of the Southern Tyrrhenian back-arc basin. Nevertheless, the high CaO contents of these melts suggest that they probably resulted from melting of clinopyroxene-rich veins related to this early ocean-forming stage.

International audience; We present in this work a tephrostratigraphic record from a sediment piston core (JO 2004) from Lake Ohrid. Five tephra layers were recognised, all from explosive eruptions of southern Italy volcanoes. A multidisciplinary study was carried out, including stratigraphy, AMS 14C chronology and geochemistry. The five tephra layers were correlated with terrestrial proximal counterparts and with both marine and lacustrine tephra layers already known in the central Mediterranean area. The oldest is from Pantelleria Island (P11, 131 ka BP). Other three tephra layers are from Campanian volcanoes: X6, Campanian Ignimbrite-Y5 and SMP1-Y3 (107, 39 and 31 ka BP respectively). The youngest tephra layer corresponds to the FL eruption from Etna Volcano (3.4 ka BP). In three cases these recognitions confirm previous findings in the Balkans, while two of them were for the first time recognised in the area, with a significant enlargement of the previous assessed dispersal areas.

The last magmatic eruption of Soufriere of Guadeloupe dated at 1530 A.D. (Soufriere eruption) is characterized by an onset with a partial flank-collapse and emplacement of a debris-avalanche that was followed by a sub-plinian VEI 2–3 explosive short-lived eruption (Phase-1) with a column that reached a height between 9 and 12 km producing about 3.9 × 10 6 m 3 DRE (16.3 × 10 6 m 3 bulk) of juvenile products. The column recurrently collapsed generating scoriaceous pyroclastic flows in radiating valleys up to a distance of 5–6 km with a maximum interpolated bulk deposit volume of 11.7 × 10 6 m 3 (5 × 10 6 m 3 DRE). We have used HAZMAP, a numerical simple first-order model of tephra dispersal [Macedonio, G., Costa, A., Longo, A., 2005. A computer model for volcanic ash fallout and assessment of subsequent hazard. Comput. Geosci. 31, 837–845] to reconstruct to a first approximation the potential dispersal of tephra and associated tephra mass loadings generated by the sub-plinian Phase 1 of the 1530 A.D. eruption. We have tested our model on a deterministic average dry season wind profile that best-fits the available data as well as on a set of randomly selected wind profiles over a 5 year interval that allows the elaboration of probabilistic maps for the exceedance of specific tephra mass load thresholds. Results show that in the hypothesis of a future 1530 A.D. scenario, populated areas to a distance of 3–4 km west–southwest of the vent could be subjected to a static load pressure between 2 and 10 kPa in case of wet tephra, susceptible to cause variable degrees of roof damage. Our results provide volcanological input parameters for scenario and event-tree definition, for assessing volcanic risks and evaluating their impact in case of a future sub-plinian eruption which could affect up to 70 000 people in southern Basse-Terre island and the region. They also provide a framework to aid decision-making concerning land management and development. A sub-plinian eruption is the most likely magmatic scenario in case of a future eruption of this volcano which has shown, since 1992, increasing signs of low-energy seismic, thermal, and acid degassing unrest without significant deformation.

International audience; Recent research into CO2 geological storage has shown that it has potential to be a safe and effective way to rapidly decrease short-term anthropogenic CO2 emissions. Despite this progress, stakeholders must be convinced that the scientific community has studied all possible scenarios, including a potential leak into the biosphere. To better understand the potential impact of such an event, a detailed geochemical and biological study was conducted during two different seasons on a naturally occurring gas vent located within a Mediterranean pasture ecosystem (Latera geothermal field, central Italy). Results from botanical, soil gas, and gas flux surveys, and from chemical and biological analyses of shallow soil samples (0-20 cm depth), show that a significant impact is only observed in the 6 m wide centre of the vent, where CO2 flux rates exceed 2000-3000 g m−2 d−1. In this "vent core" there is no vegetation, pH is low (minimum 3.5), and small changes are observed in mineralogy and bulk chemistry. In addition, microbial activities and populations are regulated in this interval by near-anoxic conditions, and by elevated soil gas CO2 (>95%) and trace reduced gases (CH4, H2S, and H2). An approximately 20 m wide halo surrounding the core forms a transition zone, over which there is a gradual decrease in CO2 concentrations, a rapid decrease in CO2 fluxes, and the absence of reactive gas species. In this transition zone grasses dominate near the vent core, but these are progressively replaced by clover and a greater plant diversity moving away from the vent centre. Physical parameters (e.g. pH, bulk chemistry, mineralogy) and microbial systems also gradually return to background values across this transition zone. Results indicate that, even at this anomalous high-flux site, the effects of the gas vent are spatially limited and that the ecosystem appears to have adapted to the different conditions through species substitution or adaptation.

A multidisciplinary study has been carried out on the Late Miocene (Messinian) Calcare di Base Formation in northern Calabria, Italy, with the aim of understanding the depositional conditions of these enigmatic carbonate sediments that have been interpreted as evaporitic or diagenetic limestone. The research has been developed through sedimentological (microfacies), organic petrography and geochemical analyses (palynofacies, Rock-Eval pyrolysis and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry). The carbonates studied preserve their original mineralogy (aragonite) and microstructure. The prevailing microfacies consists of clotted peloidal micrite with antigravitative fabric. Larger and darker cylindrical–subcylindrical micritic grains, attributable to faecal pellets, are more or less randomly dispersed in the peloidal micrite. The faecal pellets have been ascribed to copepods because zooclasts of these arthropods were observed in the palynofacies. Bright epifluorescence characterizes the faecal pellets and peloidal micrite, indicating their high content of organic matter. Detrital and stromatolitic microfacies occur rarely (around a few percent). The detrital microfacies is characterized by silt-sized grains organized in thin, sometimes bioturbated, graded laminae. The stromatolitic microfacies shows planar to gently curved/wrinkled laminae organized in dark and light couplets. The associated sedimentary organic matter shows low maturity, and preserves the original signatures of the source organisms. Rock-Eval pyrolysis revealed a transitional composition between Type II and Type III kerogen, suggesting a mixture of marine and terrigenous organic matter input. The molecular biogeochemical data indicate three main biological signatures: algae, bacteria and higher plants. Organic markers together with sedimentary evidence indicate a marine depositional scenario influenced by freshwater input rather than evaporitic concentration. We conclude that the most probable bacterial process involved in carbonate precipitation of the Calcare di Base, considering the freshwater input and consequent probable enrichment in organic matter and Ca2+ ions, is ammonification of amino-acids in aerobic conditions.

The thermal dehydration and the degradation of template of zeolite omega, a synthetic analog of mazzite Na 6.6 TMA 1.8 (H 2 O) 22.2 [Al 8.4 Si 27.6 O 72 ]-MAZ, was studied in situ by synchrotron powder diffraction. The evolution of the structural features was monitored through 25 structure refinements in the temperature range from 30 to 830 °C by full profile Rietveld analysis performed in the P6 3 / mmc space group. Structural refinements allowed the steps of degradation of tetramethylammonium (TMA), the evolution of the occupation of the different water sites and the migration of the Na cations located along the axis of the 12-ring channel towards a new site near the walls of the ring to be monitored. Transient deformations of the framework were highlighted, related to the constrained diffusion of the products of dehydration and degradation through the 8-ring channels. Permanent deformations of the frameworks correspond to the removal of the TMA cations from the gmelinite cages, which induces a relaxation of the strained 180° T1–O2–T1 angles, a widening of the opening of the 8-ring channels and a star-shaped deformation of the 12-ring channels.

International audience; We analyse the source process and the aftershock distribution of the April 21, 1995, Ventimiglia, ML=4.7 earthquake using the records of permanent high dynamic broad-band seismic stations and a temporary network deployed on land and at sea few hours after the earthquake. This event occurred on the western Mediterranean coast, near the border between Italy and France, at a depth of 9 km, at a point where Alpine tectonic units and Late Oligocene extensional structure overlap and are currently undergoing compressional stress. The focal solutions of the mainshock and three aftershocks depict a dominant reverse faulting with an important strike-slip component, which underlines two nodal planes: a NW–SE-dipping north fault and a NE–SW-dipping south fault. We operate a careful re-location of the aftershocks using a master-event technique and data from the temporal network and obtain a predominant NW–SE alignment. Then, we analyse the rupture process using an empirical Green function approach. We find that the mainshock broke a 0.5 to 1 km fault length and that the rupture propagated during 0.1–0.2 s probably in a SE direction. Those two arguments, together with the recent fault trace that exists close to the epicentre, leads us to propose that this event expresses the reactivation of an old transverse NW–SE structure with a dextral movement. This study thus emphasizes the role of inherited, deep-rooted, transcurrent features in the tectonic reactivation of this passive margin. It also underlines the importance of combining short-period and broad-band seismology to better resolve and understand regional tectonic processes in areas of moderate seismic activity and complex geology.
