International audience; Hausmannite is a common low valence Mn oxide mineral, with a distorted spinel structure, in surficial sediments. Although natural Mn oxides often contain various impurities of transitional metals (TMs), few studies have addressed the effect and related mechanism of TM doping on the reactivity of hausmannite with metal pollutants. Here, the reactivity of cobalt (Co) doped hausmannite with aqueous As(III) and As(V) was studied. Co doping decreased the point of zero charge of hausmannite and its adsorption capacity for As(V). Despite a reduction of the initial As(III) oxidation rate, Co-doped hausmannite could effectively oxidize As(III) to As(V), followed by the adsorption and fixation of a large amount of As(V) on the mineral surface. Arsenic K-edge EXAFS analysis of the samples after As(V) adsorption and As(III) oxidation revealed that only As(V) was adsorbed on the mineral surface, with an average As-Mn distance of 3.25–3.30 Å, indicating the formation of bidentate binuclear complexes. These results provide new insights into the interaction mechanism between TMs and low valence Mn oxides and their effect on the geochemical behaviors of metal pollutants.

Oral antibiotics can influence cancers and immunotherapy by interfering with the intestinal microbiota. However, the association between oral antibiotics and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) as well as the mechanisms underlying the effects of oral antibiotics on OSCC remain unclear. Here, we found that oral antibiotics cocktail (4Abx) promoted the tumor development and shifted the microbiota, decreasing the abundance of probiotic bacteria, and altered microbial metabolism in the gut of OSCC mice, increasing tyrosine and decreasing glutamate levels. In vitro experiments showed that tyrosine upregulated the PD-1 expression in T cells, SCC7 cell proliferation, and necroptosis expression. IL-10 expression level in CD11c+ cells was reduced by glutamate. Furthermore, the expression of the necroptosis-related proteins, including receptor-interacting protein kinase 1 (RIPK1), RIPK3, and mixed lineage kinase domain-like (MLKL), was higher in the OSCC mice treated with 4Abx. Supplementation with glutamate or healthy mouse feces by gavage alleviated the tumor-promoting effect of 4Abx with restored balance of microbial metabolism. Overall, we identified the detrimental role of oral antibiotics in promoting OSCC development through altered intestinal microbiota, microbial metabolism, and immune dysbiosis, implying the need for antibiotic stewardship in OSCC treatment.

International audience; Phyllomanganates are ubiquitous in a variety of environments and commonly enriched in transition metal elements, such as Ni. The effect of such foreign metal cations on phyllomanganate transformation is widely documented under aqueous conditions together with the induced modification of Ni geochemical behavior. A similar knowledge is lacking however on phyllomanganate transformation and on the induced fate of associated metal elements that may occur under dry conditions, that prevail in deserts and arid areas increasingly exposed to severe droughts or wildfires. The present study shows that crystallinity, morphology, Mn oxidation state, and Ni binding mechanisms are essentially unaffected when aging hexagonal birnessite (Mn oxidation state ∼ 3.90 and Ni/Mn molar ratios of 0.00 and 0.13) in the dry state at room temperature for up to 8 years. In contrast, heating aged Ni-doped birnessite to 25–200 °C results in an increased proportion of edge-sharing Ni-Ni(Mn) pairs with increasing temperature induced by the migration of interlayer Ni to birnessite octahedral layers and/or by an increased sharing of coordination oxygens by interlayer Ni/Mn from adjacent layers. Further heating to 400 °C does not change this proportion, with birnessite layer structure being retained. Transformation of Ni-doped birnessite to cryptomelane is complete at 500 °C, while that of Ni-free birnessite is achieved at 400 °C, suggesting that Ni doping increases birnessite thermal stability. Birnessite-to-cryptomelane transformation comes with a strong increase of Mn oxidation state, whereas this parameter remains unchanged in heated birnessite samples. Ni incorporation in the cryptomelane framework, reduces its release during reductive acid dissolution by a factor of 396 ± 15 compared to initial birnessite. These results shed light on mineral transformation affecting layered manganates under dry conditions and on the fate of associated transition metal elements.

The association between imaging features closely associated with symptomatic intracranial atherosclerotic plaques and early-onset post-stroke depression (PSD) is currently unclear.76 ischemic stroke patients who underwent high-resolution vessel wall magnetic resonance imaging (HR-VWI) were divided into PSD and non-PSD groups according to their DSM-V diagnoses and HAMD-17 scores at 14 days after onset. Clinical data and the imaging features associated with symptomatic plaques (including the enhancement index (EI), remodeling index, and plaque surface irregularity) were compared between groups. Multifactorial logistic regression analysis was used to find independent predictors of early-onset PSD. Spearman rank correlation analysis explores the association between clinical data, symptomatic plaque imaging features, and HAMD-17 in patients.The sample comprised 36 patients with early-onset PSD. The symptomatic plaque EI and infarct volume were significantly higher in depressed patients than in patients without depression (P 0.05). Multivariate logistic regression showed that symptomatic plaque EI could be used as an independent predictor of early-onset PSD after correcting for the confounding factor of infarct volume (OR = 1.034, 95% CI:1.014-1.055, P = 0.001). In the total sample, symptomatic plaque EI, infarct volume, and HAMD-17 had a significant positive correlation with each other (P 0.05).This study focused only on the patients' symptomatic plaques and did not monitor patients' systemic inflammation levels at the time of HR-VWI.The degree of symptomatic plaque enhancement is an independent predictive imaging marker of early-onset PSD and can be used the early diagnosis of early-onset PSD.

The global "myopia boom" has raised significant international concerns. Despite a higher myopia prevalence in Asia, previous large-scale genome-wide association studies (GWASs) were mostly based on European descendants. Here, we report a GWAS of spherical equivalent (SE) in 1852 Chinese Han individuals with extreme SE from Guangzhou (631 -6.00D and 574 0.00D) and Wenzhou (593 -6.00D and 54 -1.75D), followed by a replication study in two independent cohorts with totaling 3538 East Asian individuals. The discovery GWAS and meta-analysis identify three novel loci, which show genome-wide significant associations with SE, including 1q25.2 FAM163A, 10p11.22 NRP1/PRAD3, and 10p11.21 ANKRD30A/MTRNR2L7, together explaining 3.34% of SE variance. 10p11.21 is successfully replicated. The allele frequencies of all three loci show significant differences between major continental groups (P 0.001). The SE reducing (more myopic) allele of rs10913877 (1q25.2 FAM163A) demonstrates the highest frequency in East Asians and much lower frequencies in Europeans and Africans (EAS = 0.60, EUR = 0.20, and AFR = 0.18). The gene-based analysis additionally identifies three novel genes associated with SE, including EI24, LHX5, and ARPP19. These results provide new insights into myopia pathogenesis and indicate the role of genetic heterogeneity in myopia epidemiology among different ethnicities.
