An urgent challenge within agriculture is to improve fertilizer efficiency in order to reduce the environmental footprint associated with an increased production of crops on existing farmland. Standard soil fertilization strategies are often not very efficient due to immobilization in the soil and losses of nutrients by leaching or volatilization. Foliar fertilization offers an attractive supplementary strategy as it bypasses the adverse soil processes, but implementation is often hampered by a poor penetration through leaf barriers, leaf damage, and a limited ability of nutrients to translocate. Recent advances within bionanotechnology offer a range of emerging possibilities to overcome these challenges. Here we review how nanoparticles can be tailored with smart properties to interact with plant tissue for a more efficient delivery of nutrients.

Anaerobic digestion of organic waste results in production of biogas and a nutrient-rich digestate that has an established use as fertilizer in plant production. This study evaluated use of anaerobic digestate based on a high concentration of organic household waste as a fertilizer in sawdust-based production of oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus ostreatus). Inclusion of 0.5 L of anaerobic digestate (AD) per kg sawdust gave similar productivity in terms of biological efficiency (79.5 +/- 5.4 %), and protein concentration (24.7 +/- 2.4 % of dry weight (dw)) as standard mushroom substrate (78.1 +/- 5.3 %, and 21.9 +/- 3.0 % of dw, respectively). However, mushroom growth was impaired at the highest concentration of anaerobic digestate tested, 1 L digestate per kg dw sawdust. Comparison of the AD-fertilized substrate with a mushroom substrate with standard components (sawdust, wheat bran, calcium sulfate) and with similar C/N-ratio revealed some differences in elemental composition of the fruiting bodies, with an major increase in sodium concentration for the AD-fertilized substrate compared with the standard substrate (413.3 +/- 28.9 and 226.7 +/- 30.6 mg kg(-1) dw, respectively). This difference can be explained by high sodium concentration in the anaerobic digestate, most likely due to inclusion of food scraps from households and restaurants in the biodigester feedstock. Screening of both substrates for a total of 133 micro -pollutants revealed that total sum of micropollutants was significantly higher in the AD-fertilized substrate (258 +/- 12 ng/g dw substrate) than in the standard substrate (191 +/- 35 ng/g dw substrate). Nitrogen losses during preparation of the AD-fertilized substrate were negligible.

Modern agriculture has evolved technological innovations to sustain crop productivity. Recent advances in biorefinery technology use crop residue as feedstock, but this raises carbon sequestration concerns as biorefining utilizes carbon that would otherwise be returned to the soil, thus causing a decline in crop productivity. Furthermore, biorefining generates abundant lignin waste that significantly impedes the efficiency of biorefineries. Valorizing lignin into advanced nanobiotechnologies for agriculture provides a unique opportunity to balance bioeconomy and soil carbon sequestration. Integration of agricultural practices such as utilization of agrochemicals, fertilizers, soil modifiers, and mulching with lignin nanobiotechnologies promotes crop productivity and also enables advanced manufacturing of high-value bioproducts from lignin. Lignin nanobiotechnologies thus represent state-of-the-art innovations to transform both the bioeconomy and sustainable agriculture.

Hypothesis Layered double hydroxide(LDH) loaded with orthophosphate (PO4) are suggested as slow-release P fertilizers. However, PO4-LDHs have a low maximal P content, related to high charge HPO42−/PO43−anions occupying the anion exchange capacity (AEC) of LDHs. We postulate that the P content of LDHs can be enhanced by exchanging them with polymeric-P (i.e.trimetaphosphate, P3O9), which has a lower molar charge/P ratio than itsmonomer. Experiments Adsorption capacities were compared between PO4and P3O9for as-synthesized and calcined MgAl LDHs with Mg/Al ratio of 2, 3, or 4; the P-LDHs were characterized (XRD, FTIR). Dialysis and soil incubation experiments were performed with PO4−LDHs, P3O9−LDHs, and corresponding soluble fertilizers to compare their P release and P solubility (CaCl2extract). Findings The P adsorption capacities were 1.25–1.60 fold larger for P3O9compared to PO4, yet the high theoretical P contents with P3O9were not achieved (incomplete loading, P3O9depolymerization). P3O9-Mg3Al released polymeric-P whereas P3O9-Mg2Al released depolymerized PO4, and P release from P3O9-LDHs was slower than that of PO4-LDHs. With soil incubation, soluble P from P3O9-LDH was initially lower but later converged to that of PO4-LDH as result of continued hydrolysis, yet did not exceed that of the soluble P3O9and PO4fertilizers.

The effects of synthetic fertilizer and nutrient leaching are causing serious problems impacting soil function and its fertility. Mitigation of nutrient leaching and use of chemical fertilizer is crucial as fertile land adds up sustainability to climate changes. Biochar produced from agricultural bio-waste and municipal solid waste has been used for crop production and when applied in combination with organic nutrients may support mitigation of nutrient loss and adverse effects of chemical fertilizers. Different types of biochar and their application for soil enhancement have been observed, pine needle and sewage sludge derived low-temperature biochar along with compost, organic fertilizer in the form of manure and microalgal biomass may interact with soil chemistry and plant growth to impact nutrient loss and compensate the hazardous effect of chemical fertilizer, but it has not been investigated yet. This present study elaborates application of sewage sludge and pine needle biochar produced at 400 °C in an application rate of 5 % w/w and 10 t h-1 in combination with compost, manure and microalgal biomasses of Closteriopsis acicularis (BM1) and Tetradesmus nygaardi (BM2) on the growth of Chickpea (Cicer arietinum) and Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) crop assessed in a pot experiment over a two crop (Chickpea - Fenugreek) cycle in Pakistan. Results depict that the pine needle biochar with additives has increased plant height by 104.1 ± 2.76 cm and fresh biomass by 49.9 ± 1.02 g, buffered the soil pH to 6.5 for optimum growth of crops and enhance carbon retention by 36 %. This study highlights the valorization of sewage sludge and pine needle into biochar and the effect of biochar augmentation, its impact on soil nutrients and plant biomass enhancement. The greener approach also mitigates and helps in the sustainable management of solid wastes.

Cellulose is an interesting biopolymer offering numerous functionalization possibilities for various applications. Yet, cellulose functionalization usually involves expensive chemicals and complex processes. Here, we aim to utilize inexpensive fertilizer-grade phosphate for cellulose functionalization. Cellulose microfibers (CMF) were isolated from Giant Reed (GR) and were then phosphorylated using either a reagent-grade or a fertilizer-grade diammonium hydrogen phosphate (DAP) in the presence of urea following a water-based protocol. The effect of DAP on the phosphorylation reaction was mainly studied by conductometric titration, ICP-OES and FTIR, while further characterization was performed by SEM/EDX, TGA and XRD to investigate the morphology, composition, charge content, structure, and thermal degradation of the phosphorylated materials. It was found that cellulose phosphorylation using DAP fertilizer gave materials with the same charge content as that registered when using the reagent-grade DAP. Plant nutrition is crucial in crop productivity and providing food security to the ever-expanding population. Application of chemical/biological fertilizers and pesticides are the mainstays for any agricultural economy. However, there are unintended consequences of using chemical fertilizers and pesticides. The environment and ecological balance are adversely affected by their usage. Biofertilizers and biopesticides counter some undesired environmental effects of chemical fertilizers/pesticides; despite some drawbacks associated with their use. The recent developments in nanotechnology offer promise toward sustainable agriculture. Sustainable agriculture involves addressing the concerns about agriculture as well as the environment. This review briefs about important nanomaterials used in agriculture as nanofertilizers, nanopesticides, and a combination called nanobiofertilizers. Both nanofertilizers and nanopesticides enable slow and sustained release besides their eco-friendly nature. They can be tailored to the specific needs of to crop. Nanofertilizers also offer greater stress tolerance and, therefore, are of considerable value in the era of climate change. Furthermore, nanofertilizers/nanopesticides are applied in minute amounts, reducing transportation costs associated and thus positively affecting the economy. Their uses extend beyond such as if nanoparticles (NPs) are used at high concentrations; they affect plant pathogens adversely. Polymer-based biodegradable nanofertilizers and nanopesticides offer various benefits. There is also a dark side to the use of nanomaterials in agriculture. Nanotechnology often involves the use of metal/metal oxide nanoparticles, which might get access to human bodies leading to their accumulation through bio-magnification. Although their effects on human health are not known, NPs may reach toxic concentrations in soil and runoff into rivers, and other water bodies with their removal to become a huge economic burden. Nevertheless, a risk-benefit analysis of nanoformulations must be ensured before their application in sustainable agriculture.

Fertiliser has been a vital part of agriculture due to it boosting crop productivity and preventing starvation throughout the world. Despite this huge contribution, the application of nitrogen (N) fertilisers results in N leaching and the formation of greenhouse gases, which threaten the environment and human health. To minimise the impacts, slow/controlled release fertilisers (S/CRFs) have been being developed since the beginning of the 20th century. Despite the efforts made over a century, the basic terminological and classification information of these fertilisers remains vague. The scientific knowledge published in S/CRF patents has also been overlooked since the beginning. This review focused on the information gaps, clarified the definitions, differentiation and classification methods that have been randomly used in previous literature. The objectives, formulations and technologies of 109 controlled release urea patents involving sulphur coated urea, polymer coated urea and urea matrix fertilisers published in the years since these products emerged were also reviewed to 1) highlight the overlooked scientific knowledge in the patents; 2) understand the evolutionary processes and current research states of the products; 3) clarify research preferences and challenges to date; 4) identify remaining gaps for the future direction. It is expected that the organised basic information and the patent knowledge highlighted in this paper can be new resources and foster the development of S/CRFs in the future.

Biogas slurry(BS) from food waste anaerobic fermentation coexisted a lot of salinity that could damage soil and crops health. So, this study was to explore the effect of the application of biogas slurry on soil salinization in 1 ∼ 4 cm, 4-6 cm and 6 ∼ 8 cm soil layers every 10 days, Chinese cabbage growth and rhizobacteria. The results indicated that ≤ 10% concentration of biogas slurry was uninjurious for soil and plant, the dry weight growth rate was 73.7% compared with CK, long term application should be further evaluated the potential risk of salinity on underground water and human health. As for high concentration of biogas slurry ≥ 10% concentration of biogas slurry could inhibit the seed germination and root elongation, and the germination percentage was declined from 87.6% to 2.4%, but 50% and 100% concentration of biogas slurry showed a promotion of crop growth because of sufficient nutrition. The purpose of the present study is to consider a number of possible risks that may emerge when processed human wastes are involved into mass exchange processes as fertilizers for plants cultivated in the experimental model of the closed ecosystem (CEEM). The problems relating to the disruption of cycling processes in closed ecosystems can be tentatively divided into two groups: the problems that can be rather easily overcome and the chronic problems. Addition of plant inedible biomass to the soil-like substrate (SLS) can result in a decrease in plant productivity because of allelopathic interactions and enhanced growth of microorganisms. The 30% decrease in wheat productivity by the end of long-duration experiments in the CEEM, with plants grown on quasi-non-renewed solutions based on liquid products prepared by physicochemical mineralization of human wastes, was caused by lower resistance of the plants affected by toxicants accumulated in the solution because of incomplete mineralization of the wastes. The reason for the differences between the macronutrient inflows and outflows was that the donor of human wastes followed a European-type diet while the system produced only part of the plant-based diet. Moreover, macronutrients were partly sorbed in rooting substrates and became unavailable to plants: the substrates in the system retained about 50% of the Ca and 20% ÷ 25% of the Mg, Na, and P inflows over one cycle. These problems are temporary and can be minimized in the foreseeable future.

As the slow-release fertilizer, oil-coated fertilizer can not only slow down the nutrients loss, but also have outstanding advantages in controlling the nutrients release. Based on a large number of literature, this paper systematically investigated the composition, classification, properties and preparation of oil-coated fertilizers, summarizes the challenges faced by the oil-coated fertilizers and offers a few suggestions for the future research. Through literature research, some important conclusions were found: (1) Oil-coated fertilizers are generally composed of core fertilizers and coated oil layers, and some have active interlayers. (2) Vegetable oils has the characteristics of easy degradation, water resistance and impact resistance, and the nutrient release curves of vegetable oil coated fertilizer in soil and still water are "S" type. (3) The modified polyurethane exhibits good compatibility with urea, and can control the release of N in a long period of time, which is 30 days longer than the N release life of ordinary polyurethane-coated fertilizers. Durable chitosan-based coating material used as a barrier for slow-release fertilizers in the agricultural soil. This approach decreases the intense usage of fertilizer and works on their accessibility for the plants' necessities. In present paper, the proposed coating material was prepared on the basis of chitosan-kaolinite composite (CS-Gl-K). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (ATG), XRD, swelling degree and biodegradability studies were used to analyze the influence of the kaolinite clay incorporation in chitosan film properties. The characterization of the chitosan composites has been thoroughly studied. The NPK mineral fertilizer was coated according to the dip-immersing process of chitosan-kaolinite composites. Slow-release efficiency was evaluated by determining the rate of phosphorus release from the covered granules into water and soil. Moreover, phosphorus release from coated NPK/CS-Gl-K granules was generally delayed contrasted with NPK/uncoated. In addition, the biodegradation investigation of the composite material (CS-Gl-K) in soil was affirmed its durability. The proposed coating material has good slow-release properties, low cost and is environmentally friendly. The FTIR, ATG and XRD spectra revealed a good intercalation between the kaolinite-clay pores and chitosan chains.

Polylactic acid (PLA) is a novel biodegradable material that is widely used in fields like medicine, petrochemicals, disposable products, and has played significant role in the fast-growing agriculture sector in recent years. In this study, nanoscale sustained-release urea fiber materials were successfully fabricated by coaxial electrospinning by encapsulating urea inside polylactic acid fibers. The effects of different concentrations of PLA and urea on the preparation of fibrous membranes as well as the effects of different concentrations of PH and variations in temperature on the sustained release were investigated. The experimental results showed that the proposed method was feasible and the urea fiber membranes acidic and basic conditions as well as elevated temperatures. The sustained release time for the urea was as long as 84 d. Scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometry were employed to characterize the morphology of the electrospun nanofibers. Thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry showed that the release system was thermally stable up to a temperature of 126 °C, and urea concentration was determined by UV–Vis spectrophotometry. This method has broad application prospects in agricultural production and provides a more rational fertilizer choice for soil-free cultivation.

Finding strategies to reuse and treat organic wastes is of utmost need. Biological processes offer the possibility to transform them into safer end products with benefits for both agriculture and the environment. Moreover, it represents an ecologically-sound and economically attractive alternative to landfill disposal and incineration. In this work, we evaluated the feasibility of vermicomposting to treat and process grape marc, the main solid by-product of the wine industry. The long-term changes in grape marc derived from both white and red winemaking processes were assessed throughout the process of vermicomposting from a physico-chemical and microbiological perspective. New layers of fresh marc were added sequentially in the presence and absence of earthworms (Eisenia andrei) forming an age gradient during a 42-week period. An optimal moisture level of 70% was maintained over the course of the process. The pH fell within weak-alkaline levels through the layerś profile and the electrical conductivity was between 200 and 300 µS cm−1, providing optimum conditions for earthworm growth. The mass loss caused by earthworm activity led to an increased content of macro- and micronutrients at the end of the trial. An overall decrease in microbial biomass and its activity, indicative of a stabilised material, was also recorded with depth of layer. Altogether, this points to vermicomposting as a suitable management system for processing grape marc with a dual purpose, that is fertilizer production and environment protection. This is especially relevant in the current attempts to reach a fully circular economy.

In order to circumvent the water eutrophication caused by nitrogen loss in agriculture, slow-release and high-water containing fertilizers have captured much attention. Considering the unstable release of traditional slow-released fertilizers, novel strategies need to be designed to meet the steady release of fertilizers. Herein, by integrating cellulose-based hydrogel with MIL-100(Fe), a pH-sensitive Cellulose/MOFs hydrogel (CAM) with a high surface area (45.25 m2/g) was devised. The volume changes and the water adsorption of the hydrogels were uncovered from pH 3 to pH 11, where the highest water adsorption (100 g/g) was achieved at pH 11. Besides, a pH-sensitive urea slow release fertilizer (U-CAM) was also designed. The urea release of the U-CAM at pH 11 was much slower than that of the U-CAM at pH 3, which indicated its potential application in arid regions. In parallel with a favorable water-holding capacity, the totally loss of the soil moisture loaded with U-CAM was slowed down by 18 days as compared with the pure soil. The positive effect of the U-CAM on the growth of wheat was indexed with the germination rate, number of tillers, photosynthetic rate and chlorophyll content of the crop, which verified their further application in irrigating farming.

Co-digestion of organic waste and wastewater is receiving increased attention as a plausible waste management approach toward energy recovery. However, traditional anaerobic processes for co-digestion are particularly susceptible to severe organic loading rates (OLRs) under long-term treatment. To enhance technological feasibility, this work presented a two-stage Anaerobic Membrane Bioreactor (2 S-AnMBR) composed of a hydrolysis reactor (HR) followed by an anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) for long-term co-digestion of food waste and kitchen wastewater. The OLRs were expanded from 4.5, 5.6, and 6.9 kg COD m-3 d-1 to optimize biogas yield, nitrogen recovery, and membrane fouling at ambient temperatures of 25-32 °C. Results showed that specific methane production of UASB was 249 ± 7 L CH4 kg-1 CODremoved at the OLR of 6.9 kg TCOD m-3 d-1. Total Chemical Oxygen Demand (TCOD) loss by hydrolysis was 21.6% of the input TCOD load at the hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 2 days. However, low total volatile fatty acid concentrations were found in the AnMBR, indicating that a sufficiently high hydrolysis efficiency could be accomplished with a short HRT. Furthermore, using AnMBR structure consisting of an Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket Reactor (UASB) followed by a side-stream ultrafiltration membrane alleviated cake membrane fouling. The wasted digestate from the AnMBR comprised 42-47% Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen (TKN) and 57-68% total phosphorous loading, making it suitable for use in soil amendments or fertilizers. Finally, the predominance of fine particles (D10 = 0.8 μm) in the ultrafiltration membrane housing (UFMH) could lead to a faster increase in trans-membrane pressure during the filtration process.

Wood and coal combustion generate wastes, which may negatively influence the environment. However, studies concerning coal combustion products serving as soil additives are currently in progress. Hence, this study was conducted to compare properties (mineralogy, metallic element content, and rare earth element content) of combustion wastes of different genesis (ash and soot after wood and coal combustion in households, ash from thermal power stations) and to assess possible risk posed to the soil environment when used as soil additive. This study demonstrated the diversity of chemical and mineralogical features of ashes of household genesis originating from thermal power stations. Ash from household stoves showed a higher concentration of metallic elements (i.e., Zn) compared to those originating from thermal power stations. Antimony (Sb) content in household ash can serve as an indicator of plastic (polyethylene) combustion, which is legally prohibited. Leaching tests using water and common mineral fertilizers showed that ammonium sulfate mobilizes metallic elements (Cu, Zn, Pb) more significantly than potassium nitrate or deionized water. The leaching of metallic elements from household stove’s ash certainly excludes the possibility of applying the ash as a soil additive even when the ash contains a source of beneficial elements for plants (i.e., Ca).

Black soldier fly (BSF) larval bioconversion can recycle nutrients in organic wastes into larval biomass and frass. While the frass has been commonly marketed as a soil amendment, its usefulness in soilless cultivation remains largely unexplored. Growth experiments were conducted to investigate the effectiveness of surplus food-derived and okara-derived BSF larval frass as an incorporated compost, side-dress fertilizer and frass-tea drench for the cultivation of pak choi and lettuce in waste-wood derived biochar growing media. Pak choi yields from treatments with surplus food-derived frass and biochar at a 10:90 (v/v) ratio and inorganic fertilizer were comparable to those of the control which consisted of soil, peat-based compost and inorganic fertilizer. However, yields decreased with increasing frass incorporation rates owing to high salinity and potentially low oxygen conditions in the growing media. When used as a fertilizer on biochar-coir growing media, the direct application of frass as a side-dress fertilizer was 1.6-6.8 times more effective in promoting lettuce growth than the application as a frass-tea drench. Frass fertilizers derived from surplus food outperformed those derived from okara by 1.3-5.3 times. Lettuce yields were not significantly different between the treatment with surplus food-derived frass applied as a side-dress fertilizer and the control of liquid inorganic fertilizer. Variations in fertilizing potential were attributed to nutrient availability and the presence of plant growth promoting microbes in the growing media. BSF larval frass derived from food waste shows promise in partially replacing unsustainable agricultural inputs for leafy vegetable cultivation, including soil and inorganic fertilizers.

Zinc oxide nanoparticles (nano-ZnO) are attractive as fertilizer materials but high concentrations may negatively affect the environment. To reduce their dispersion in the environment we entrapped nano-ZnO in biodegradable polymer beads consisting of alginate and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The alginate/PVA/ZnO beads were prepared via ionotropic gelation using two different crosslinking ions (Ca2+ and Zn2+), and the effect of alginate crosslinking ion and PVA content on bead structure, water absorption, water retention and zinc release was investigated. The pure CaAlg and ZnAlg beads demonstrated a poor water absorption and retention, which were strongly enhanced by the incorporation of PVA into the beads. The continuous Zn release was measured in a sand column, and it was found that the Zn-crosslinked beads rapidly released high concentrations of Zn followed by a more gradual Zn release, whereas Ca alginates showed only a gradual Zn release. The Zn dissolution kinetics could be tuned by the crosslinking ion composition. The prepared nano-ZnO-containing alginate/PVA beads may be attractive for Zn fertilizer applications under water-limited conditions.

Despite the wide use of urea and ammonium as N-fertilizers, no information is available about the proper ratio useful to maximize the efficiency of their acquisition by crops. Ionomic analyses of maize seedlings fed with five different mixes of urea and ammonium indicated that after 7 days of treatment, the elemental composition of plant tissues was more influenced by ammonium in the nutrient solution than by urea. Within 24 h, similar high affinity influx rates of ammonium were measured in ammonium-treated seedlings, independently from the amount of the cation present in the nutrient solution (from 0.5 to 2.0 mM N), and it was confirmed by the similar accumulation of 15N derived from ammonium source. After 7 days, some changes in ammonium acquisition occurred among treatments, with the highest ammonium uptake efficiency when the urea-to-ammonium ratio was 3:1. Gene expression analyses of enzymes and transporters involved in N nutrition highlight a preferential induction of the cytosolic N-assimilatory pathway (via GS, ASNS) when both urea and ammonium were supplied in conjunction, this response might explain the higher N-acquisition efficiency when both sources are applied. In conclusion, this study provides new insights on plant responses to mixes of N sources that maximize the N-uptake efficiency by crops and thus could allow to adapt agronomic practices in order to limit the economic and environmental impact of N-fertilization.

The aim of this study was to assess the maturity indicators of municipal solid waste compost (MSWC) enrichment with different byproduct of (sugar and fertilizer industry) sulphur (S). The concentration of total S (TS), water-soluble S (WSS), HCl extractable S and available S were significantly different in composts prepared through different byproduct of S with MSW. WSS varied from 4.6 to 5.9% of TS after 120 days of the composting period, whereas, available S varied from 14.5 − 8.6% of TS. S enriched MSW compost had lower C/N, C/S ratio and higher nitrification index as well as lower phyto-toxicity, demonstrating that composts are properly matured and stabilised. Highest compost quality index (0.97) was recorded with S1 compost. Arylsulphatase activity significantly increased with compost maturity. Results stated that all S enriched products maintained a superior amount of plant nutrients and quality indices, indicating that S enriched compost could be a possible substitute for expensive fertilizers.

The coupling of sanitation system and agriculture production is essential to mitigate the environmental burden and offset unsustainable fertilizer utilization by employing resource-oriented sanitation. Yet, the economic feasibility and energy recovery potential from domestic waste have rarely been investigated. To assess four scenarios (whether with kitchen waste separation; whether with energy recovery) in the resource-oriented sanitation system, an integrated assessment framework based on energy analysis and techno-economic analysis is employed to investigate the comprehensive sanitation system including both wastewater treatment and solid waste disposal. The results show that energy recovery from human excreta and kitchen waste can offset the energy consumption of the sanitation system and the energy surplus can even be 1067.70 kJ·PE−1·day−1. The optimum covering range of the regional recovery center was quantified from the balance between scale effect and spatial distribution, and the serving inhabitants need to be more than 2800.

At present, the yield of common buckwheat, which is mainly grown in northern Shaanxi of China, is low and the grain quality is poor. Nitrogen is an important nutrient for the growth of common buckwheat, and appropriate nitrogen application can improve the grain quality. Nitrogen fertilizer could alter the starch granule morphology shapes and the granule size distribution. With increasing nitrogen levels, branch number, flower clusters number, grain number per plant, contents of protein and fat, size distribution of “C” granules, and percentages of light transmittance significantly increased, whereas amylose content and retrogradation decreased. All the samples displayed typical A-type X-ray diffraction patterns. Starch showed higher pasting temperature and gelatinization enthalpy but lower trough and final viscosities under high nitrogen levels. These results suggested N2 treatment was more suitable for common buckwheat growth, principal components and correlation analysis revealed that nitrogen fertilizer significantly affected the physicochemical properties of common buckwheat starches.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as hydrogen peroxide at low concentrations act as signaling of several abiotic stresses. Overproduction of hydrogen peroxide causes the oxidation of plant cell lipid phosphate layer promoting senescence and cell death. To mitigate the effect of ROS, plants develop antioxidant defense mechanisms (superoxide dismutase, catalase, guaiacol peroxidase), ascorbate-glutathione cycle enzymes (ASA-GSH) (ascorbate peroxidase, monodehydroascorbate reductase, dehydroascorbate reductase and glutathione reductase), which have the function of removing and transforming ROS into non-toxic substances to maintain cellular homeostasis. Foliar or soil application of fertilizers containing B, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, Se and Zn at low concentrations has the ability to elicit and activate antioxidative enzymes, non-oxidizing metabolism, as well as sugar metabolism to mitigate damage by oxidative stress. Plants treated with micronutrients show higher tolerance to abiotic stress and better nutritional status. In this review, we summarized results indicating micronutrient actions in order to reduce ROS resulting the increase of photosynthetic capacity of plants for greater crop yield. This meta-analysis provides information on the mechanism of action of micronutrients in combating ROS, which can make plants more tolerant to several types of abiotic stress such as extreme temperatures, salinity, heavy metals and excess light.

Livestock slurry has been reported to be a potential secondary raw material as it contains macronutrients -nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium-, which could be valorised as high-quality fertilizers if proper separation and concentration of valuable compounds is performed. In this work, pig slurry liquid fraction was assessed for nutrient recovery and valorisation as fertilizer. Some indicators were used to evaluate the performance of proposed train of technologies within the framework of circular economy. As ammonium and potassium species are highly soluble at the whole pH range, a study based on phosphate speciation at pH from 4 to 8 was assessed to improve the macronutrients recovery from the slurry, resulting in two different treatment trains at acidic and alkaline conditions. The acidic treatment system based on centrifugation, microfiltration and forward osmosis was applied to obtain a nutrient-rich liquid organic fertilizer containing 1.3 % N, 1.3 % P2O5 and 1.5 % K2O. The alkaline path of valorisation was composed by centrifugation and stripping by using membrane contactors to produce an organic solid fertilizer -7.7 % N, 8,0 % P2O5 and 2.3 % K2O-, ammonium sulphate solution -1.4 % N- and irrigation water. Zinc bioavailability with the presence of other elements in wheat grains might be affected by fertilizers. A long-term field experiment was conducted to examine effects of N fertilizer on Zn bioavailability in wheat grain tissues, with changes in the concentrations, distribution, and speciation of Zn as well as P and sulfur S via synchrotron-based technology. Results showed that addition of N fertilizer was associated with changes in Zn concentrations and distributions in grain tissues, especially in the crease region and endosperm. Simultaneously, N addition enhanced Zn-S colocalization in the crease region and endosperm and lowered the P/Zn ratio and Zn-P colocalization. Addition of N fertilizer with P increased Zn-cysteine (9.2%) and decreased Zn-phytate (47.3%) in the crease region, leading to potentially higher grain Zn bioavailability. Thus, addition of N fertilizer improved concentrations and bioavailability of Zn, by coordinating the relationships among Zn, P and S within wheat grains.

Thermal conversion of phosphorus (P)-rich waste materials such as sewage sludge offers several advantages: generation of bioenergy, concentration of plant nutrients and the destruction of organic pollutants. Different thermal processes modify the feedstock’s chemical and physical structure in differing ways, which also affects P speciation and plant availability in the residual ashes or carbonization products. This study assessed to which extent the P plant availability of ashes and chars produced from one batch of sewage sludge by incineration, pyrolysis or gasification was affected by particle size management and post-process oxidation. Overall, a smaller particle size of the materials as well as post-process oxidation of non-oxidized materials increased the amount of plant-available P in the soil. In a pot experiment, all the materials increased plant biomass compared with the untreated control, but the pyrolysis chars had a substantially greater fertiliser value than the gasification ashes, while the two tested incineration ashes differed in their P fertilizing effect. P availability in non-oxidized materials was partly related to lower process temperatures and lower levels of crystallinity. However, downstream oxidation simultaneously increased crystallinity and P availability in a pyrolysis char and gasification ashes, resulting in an increase in plant P uptake of up to 60%. Results indicate that the oxidation of poorly soluble Fe-phosphates may contribute to the positive effect on P availability. The results suggest that changes to the design and settings of the thermal conversion processes of sewage sludge offer considerable potential for improving P availability in the residual material.

Purpose The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is continuously in search of environment- friendly farming practices since mass-scale agriculture was initiated. It is imperative to gauge to the level of awareness of the farmers on the agricultural practices causing environmental issue in order to devise new agricultural extension programs. This research aims to identify the attitudes of farmers towards agriculture and environment in Al-Ghat area of Saudi Arabia. Methodology A simple random sample of 110 farms truly representing the farming community was drawn to meet the objectives of the study. Data were collected by using the pre-tested questionnaire during the face-to-face interviews. In order to understand the message of study, data were analyzed for percentages, arithmetic average and standard deviation in addition to the simple Pearson correlation coefficient. Results The results showed that the high proportion (87.3%) of farmers was interested in continuing to work farm and 77.3% of farmers did not consider adopting agriculture their main occupation. The findings of the survey reveal that some 55.5% of the respondent farmers were aware of the agricultural practices and their relation to the environment. Some 57.3% of the surveyed farmers are aware of potential benefits of enhanced utilization of agricultural organic wastes. However, main profession, farm employment (as the independent variables) showed a significant positive correlation with the attitudes of farmers towards their working in agriculture (as a dependent variable). Also a significant negative relationship between the educational levels and the attitudes of the farmers towards working in agriculture was noticed. The study also indicated a significant correlation between education and the degree of awareness of agricultural practices related to the environment and maximizing the optimum utilization of agricultural waste i.e. organic residues. Conclusions The study suggested the need for new awareness and orientation programs to educate farmers and extension workers, highlighting the environment- friendly agricultural practices. Recommendation There is need to offer incentives and facilities to keep the farmers stay in the farming business. Extension staff must keep educating them on beneficial features of organic farm waste and crop residues as organic fertilizers.

Efforts to recycle organic waste using black soldier fly (BSF) larvae into high-quality alternative protein ingredients in animal feeds and organic fertilizers have gained momentum worldwide. However, there is limited information on waste manipulation to increase nutrient retention for enhanced larval performance and frass fertilizer quality. In the present study, brewer's spent grain with a carbon to nitrogen (C/N) ratio of 11 (control) was amended with sawdust to obtain substrates with C/N ratios of 15, 20, 25 and 30. The effects of substrate C/N ratios on BSF larval yield, waste degradation, biomass conversion efficiency, compost maturity and nutrient levels of frass fertilizer were evaluated. Substrates amended with sawdust did not significantly affect waste degradation efficiency and biomass conversion rates of BSF larvae. The wet and dried larval yields were significantly higher for substrates with C/N ratio of 15 compared to the other amended substrates. An amended substrate with C/N ratio of 15 enhanced nutrients uptake by BSF larvae, and increased nitrogen (N) and phosphorus retention in frass compost by 21 and 15%, respectively. Compost maturation time was shortened to five weeks, as indicated by the stable C/N ratios and high seed germination indices. This study has demonstrated that the amendment of the substrate with sawdust to C/N ratio of 15 could generate compost with desirable nutrients for use as high-quality fertilizer for organic farming.

Conventional agriculture often relies on bulky doses of fertilizers and pesticides that have adversely affected the living beings as well as the ecosystems. As a basic tenet of sustainable agriculture, minimum agrochemicals should be used so that the environment can be protected and various species can be conserved. Further, sustainable agriculture should be a low input system, where the production costs are lower and net returns are higher. The application of nanotechnology in agriculture can significantly enhance the efficiency of agricultural inputs and thus it offers a significant way to maintain sustainable development of agroecosystems via nanoparticles. In this regard, nano-plant growth promoters, nanopesticides, nanofertilizers, nano-herbicides, agrochemical encapsulated nanocarrier systems etc. have been developed for the potential applications in agriculture. These can have great benefits for agriculture, including higher production of crops, inhibition of plant pathogens, removal of unwanted weeds and insects with lesser cost, energy and waste production. However, there are several concerns related to the use of nanoparticles in agriculture. These include the approaches for synthesis, their mechanisms of penetration to applied surfaces and the risks involved. Though, advent of new technologies has significantly improved the synthesis and application of nanomaterials in agriculture, there are many uncertainties regarding nano-synthesis, their way of utilization, uptake and internalization inside the crop cells. Therefore, an elaborate investigation is required for deciphering the engineered nanomaterials, assessing their mechanistic application and agroecological toxicity. Hence, this review is aimed to critically highlight the NPs material application and points towards the vital gaps in the use of nanotechnology for sustainable agriculture.

Sustainable development goals imply environmentally sound management of all wastes to minimize the waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling, and reuse. In particular, the poultry industry produces nutrient-rich waste that requires proper management. Additionally, the recycling of bio-wastes in agricultural lands is still a key technology for the sustainable use of nutrients as a renewable fertilizer. Currently, there are very few studies on the utilization of agro-industrial bio-wastes, such as poultry abattoir sludge (PAS), for crop cultivation in soils containing low organic matter and high pH. In this context, it is necessary to make a more particular assessment of poultry industry-oriented and locally available nutrient-rich organic wastes for nodulation, physiological adaptation, and crop yield. Considering the scarcity of the literature in this field, the present study aimed to fulfill the apparent gap by focusing on the applicability of recycled PAS to low fertility soil in the growth of chickpea selected as a model legume, thereby contributing to the development of an agricultural and sustainable industrial management strategy for the relevant sectors. In this study, leaf chlorophyll content and nodule color were also investigated by the image analysis methodology to describe the effects of bio-waste on closing chickpea yield gap in a marginal land with high soil pH and low organic matter. Two-year consecutive field experiments were carried out to explore the effect of the PAS with the application rates of 25 kg N ha−1 (T2), 50 kg N ha−1 (T3), and 100 kg N ha−1 (T4) along with unamended (T0) and fertilized control (T1). The results indicated that the PAS treatments significantly differed in chlorophyll content, nodulation parameters, and biomass and grain yields. The chlorophyll content was correlated (r = 0.910) with the red color value (RGB color model) of nodule image analysis in the response to bio-waste. Based on the two-year average, it was concluded that chickpea yield could be increased 45% by amending with the PAS (T3). The present study clearly demonstrated that the image analysis could be a useful digital tool for the evaluation of chlorophyll content, nitrogen fixation efficiency, and forecasting biomass and grain yields of chickpea. The results also confirmed that the PAS application to low fertility soil could prominently contribute to establish sustainable waste management and crop production alternatives for closing chickpea yield gap.

Nanobiotechnology has gained considerable momentum in the field of plant sciences in the last few years. Nanomaterials of various metal oxides has been utilized for enhancing growth, productivity and in crop protection strategies. Among them, nanosilica has emerged as a key player in orchestrating plant growth and conferring tolerance to various abiotic and biotic stresses. Nanosilica has increased absorptivity that accounts for an increased uptake of silica, although the exact mechanism is not fully understood. Nanosilica uptake in the roots and leaves reduces the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and membrane lipid peroxidation. It is known to restrict the entry of sodium ions and other heavy metals in plants. Concurrently, nanosilica deposition in the leaf tissue enhances the plant defense against pathogens. The present review attempts to provide a novel insight into its uptake mechanism and nanosilica mediated abiotic and biotic stress tolerance in plants. This review will also shed light on the prospects and challenges related to application of nanosilica based fertilizers.

In this work, novel sodium alginate-based double-network hydrogel beads were prepared and applied for the water-retention and slow release of fertilizers (WSF). The WSF beads were prepared by ion-crosslinking and the free radical polymerization of acrylic acid, acrylamide, and polymerizable β-cyclodextrin in the presence of urea-loaded halloysites. The WSF beads were characterized using SEM, FTIR, and TGA. Their swelling capacity and water retention were measured by a weighing method and their slow-release behavior was studied by spectrophotometry. The water retention and slow release results showed that the fertilizer displayed improved urea release and water retention properties, indicating that halloysite nanotubes clearly improved the performance of fertilizers. In addition, the experimental data of the slow release of urea in water and soil better fitted the Korsmeyer-Peppas model compared with the Higuchi model, a zero-order model or a first order mode. The release behavior of the fertilizer beads followed a Fickian diffusion mechanism.

We are facing unprecedented phosphorus (P) challenges, namely P scarcity associated with increasing food demand, and an oversupply of P fertilisers, resulting in eutrophication. Although we need a multidisciplinary approach to systematically enhance P-use efficiency, monodisciplinary studies still prevail. Here, we propose to tighten the P cycle by identifying P-efficient crop genotypes, integrating four plant strategies: increasing P-acquisition efficiency, photosynthetic P-use efficiency and P-remobilisation efficiency, and decreasing seed phytate P concentrations. We recommend P-efficient genotypes together with diversified cropping systems involving complementary P-acquisition strategies as well as smart P-fertiliser management to enhance P-use efficiency in agriculture dependent on soil P status. These strategies will reduce P-fertiliser requirements and offsite environmental impacts, while enhancing seed quality for human and livestock nutrition.

This paper presents an inventory of sewage sludge ashes (SSA) generated in the mono-incineration plants for municipal sewage sludge in Poland. This research focused on the detailed study of mass flows, chemical composition, and phosphorus recovery potential. There are currently 11 sludge mono-incineration plants operated with a total capacity of 160,300 Mg dry weight (d.w.) of sludge annually. Recently, a significant increase in the amount of SSA generated in these plants has been observed, reaching 26,756 Mg in 2018. Chemical composition of SSA showed significant amounts of the main nutrients: calcium (~14%), phosphorus (~13%), magnesium (~3%), and potassium (~1%). Additional main elements were iron (~14.5%), silicon (~13%), and aluminium (~6%). The main trace elements in the SSA were zinc (~3750 mg/kg) and copper (~899 mg/kg). Pollutants, according to fertilizer regulations of different countries, present in Polish SSA were chromium (~703 mg/kg), nickel (~260 mg/kg), lead (~94 mg/kg), and cadmium (~9 mg/kg). The radionuclides, uranium, and thorium often present in higher amounts in commercial phosphate rock-based fertilizers, were only detected in SSA at low levels of 4–9 mg/kg and 2–3 mg/kg, respectively. Theoretical phosphorus recovery potential from the SSA (from plants in Cracow, Lodz, Gdansk, Gdynia, Szczecin, and Kielce) was estimated at 1613.8 Mg, of which 33.9% is bioavailable. Currently, in Poland, the recommended approach is the production of fertilizers as a result of the extraction of phosphorus from the SSA with its use in the production of secondary mineral fertilizers. Further research in this area is required considering Polish conditions and legislation.

This paper reviews relevant knowledge about the production and uses of fertilizers from fish and fish waste (FW) that may be applicable for certified organic farming, with a focus on crop and horticultural plants. Fish industries generate a substantial amount of FW. Depending on the level of processing or type of fish, 30–70% of the original fish is FW. Circular economy and organic farming concepts were used to evaluate the potential of production of fertilizers from captured fish. Fertilizers produced from captured fish promote the recycling of nutrients from the sea and back to terrestrial environments. Nutritional composition of FW is assessed to determine the potential to supply plant nutrients such as nitrogen, or a combination of nitrogen and phosphorous, or to enrich a compost. Methods used in processing of FW to produce fish- emulsion, fish hydrolysate/fish silage, fish-compost and digestate from anaerobic digestion/co-digestion are presented. Using information about commercially available fish-based fertilizers listed by the Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI), we present a scenario for establishing fish/ FW-based fertilizers industry and research in Europe. With Norway’s 9th position among top ten global capture producers and focus in Norway on developing organic farming, we brief how FW is currently utilized and regulated, and discuss its availability for possible production of FW-based organic fertilizers. The amount of FW available in Norway for production of fertilizers may facilitate the establishment of an industrial product that can replace the currently common use of dried poultry manure from conventional farming in organic farming.

Populus species are fast growing with high N requirements; an optimum level of fertilization is necessary for high seedling quality and subsequent plantation productivity. In this study, the morphological and physiological responses of two poplar clones (XH and BL3) to exponential and conventional N dosages were investigated, with a specific focus on leaf traits, the photorespiratory N cycle, and the interconversion of amino acids within leaves. Results show that shoot height and leaf number exponentially increased with plant growth. Leaf area, chlorophyll concentration, and net photosynthetic rate significantly increased for both clones during N fertilization, with a significant difference only in leaf area of clone XH between exponential and conventional dosages. Leaf concentrations of free amino acids and soluble sugars were not different but soluble proteins and fatty acids were significantly different for clone XH between N dosages; the amino acids glutamate, alanine, and aspartic acid concentrations increased in exponentially fertilized seedlings compared to controls. Amino acids, including the composition concentration and activity of glutamic-oxalacetic and -pyruvic transaminase, and soluble sugars were significantly higher for clone BL3 in fertilized seedlings. Photorespiration (glycine and glycolate oxidase) and glutathione redox (oxidized glutathione) were affected by fertilization. The activities of key enzymes (glycolate oxidase, catalase, and γ-glutamate cysteine ligase) involved in photorespiration and glutathione metabolism were lower for clone XH with exponential fertilization. Phenylalanine catabolism was influenced by fertilization and the interaction, clone × fertilization, showing accumulation of phenylalanine and tyrosine but decreases in phenylalanine ammonialyase activity and flavonoid concentrations in leaves of fertilized seedlings. The results indicate that leaf area and the interconversion of amino acids through deamidation/transamination are key regulatory hubs in poplar acclimation to soil N availability.

Nitrogen (N) is the most abundant mineral elements in plants, and the application of inorganic N fertilizer makes huge contribution to the crop production and global food security. However, low N use efficiency (NUE) and overapplication of N fertilizers causes ever-growing environmental problems. Understanding the molecular mechanisms of N sensing and signalling in plants will provide molecular basis for NUE improvement of crops. Forward genetics screening and functional analysis have characterized the NRT1.1-NLP centered N signalling pathway at the cellular level. With the incorporation of systems biology approaches, a preliminary N regulatory network has been delineated. Meanwhile, long-distance N signalling has also been unveiled at the whole plant level. This review highlights most recent understanding of the N signalling network in plants, and also discusses how to further integrate hierarchical regulation of N signalling in plants.

This study was carried out to evaluate the effects of foliar sprays containing boron (B) nano-fertilizer (NF) on the growth and physiology of lettuce (Lactuca sativa) and zucchini (Cucurbita pepo). Plants were grown under greenhouse conditions for 60 days on a modified Hoagland solution with the presence and absence of boron (+B or –B). A synthesized B–NF foliar spray and a commercial B foliar fertilizer (Bortrac™ 150, BT) was applied at a concentration of 30 mg B L−1 at 10-d intervals throughout the experiment. The B–NF treatment increased the growth of lettuce 2.7- and 1.9-fold for shoots and roots, respectively, with an average production of lettuce biomass by ~58%. Similarly, the NF increased the growth of zucchini by 18 and 66% compared with Control–B (the absence of B), and 13 and 36% compared with BT, both for shoots and roots, respectively. Nevertheless, NF + B mostly decreased lettuce growth with symptoms of B toxicity in leaves. In lettuce, addition of B did not affect concentrations of phenols; however, in zucchini, Control–B induced a higher production of phenolic compounds possibly related to B deficiency. The B addition in lettuce reduced the DPPH activity by 32 and 21% in NF and BT, respectively, compared to Control-B. These responses were similar in zucchini; however, the effect of B was product of its presence in mineral solution rather than due the foliar product applied. This suggests that a NF-based delivery system for B may be highly effective at boosting plant productivity on B-limited soils.

This study evaluated the physicochemical and morphological properties of pectin and chitosan particles combined with sugarcane vinasse for soil fertilization applications. Particles were obtained by adding the biopolymeric solutions (pectin or chitosan solution) dropwise into the crosslinking solutions (calcium chloride 1% in ethanolic solution or tripolyphosphate 5% aqueous solution) followed by drying. Vinasse enhanced pectin gel stability improving pectin/vinasse particle properties. Physicochemical characterization indicated that vinasse nutrients were properly incorporated in both pectin and chitosan matrices. Particles showed spherical shape, with an average diameter of 3 and 2 mm for the pectin and chitosan particles with vinasse, respectively. Chitosan particles, compared to pectin, showed lower swelling capacity and solubility and higher mechanical resistance indicating a denser and more compact polymer network. Both particles were able to hinder water evaporation rates from sandy soil under water stress conditions. Biobased particles with vinasse added show potential to be applied as soil fertilizer representing an alternative to use and disposal of this expressive wastewater from sugar and alcohol industries.

However, the impact of successive applications of SS on soil and the risks of nutrient leaching are often neglected. In this study, corn was grown on a constructed wetland for four crop cycles (two years), in which the wetland was subjected to successive SS applications. The objective of this study was to evaluate how the successive applications of SS affect the availability and leaching of nutrients in the soil profile, after two years of cultivation. Experiments were performed using a randomized block design with repeated measurements in time, that is, soil was sampled in each harvest. Six treatments were tested: four fertilizations based on sewage sludge, resulting from biological and anaerobic treatment, calculated to provide 25 (SS25), 50 (SS50), 75 (SS75), and 100% (SS100), of the N required for corn production (140 kg ha−1); a mineral fertilization (NPK) (140 kg ha−1 N, 70 kg ha−1 of P2O5 and 40 kg ha−1 of K2O) and a control (without fertilization). The results showed that four consecutive applications of SS100 for two years caused significant accumulation of nutrients and organic matter in the superficial layers of the soil. The electrical conductivity and the concentration of NO3 – in the soil solution were higher than those permitted by Brazilian legislation. The adoption of domestic SS in Brazilian agriculture can be a viable alternative in the search for an environment-friendly and economically feasible method for SS disposal. Fulvic acid (FA), as one type of soil conditioner, can enhance drought tolerance, improve nutrient ingestion, stabilize pH values of soil, and reduce fertilizer extracting behaviors. Moreover, it shows a good effect on increasing the permissiveness of plants to various environments, and the stress of salinity and drought is included. Therefore, it can be used as an ideal soil conditioner. In order to extend its effect, it may be loaded into the core-shell polymer microspheres. In this study, FA was added to calcium carbonate (CaCO3) microspheres, potassium alginate (PAL) and chitosan (CS) were assembled outside. Thus, PAL/CS/FA-CaCO3 microspheres were prepared using layer-by-layer self-assembly methods. The surface morphology, encapsulation efficiency and in vitro drug release characteristics were investigated. It was revealed that PAL/CS/FA-CaCO3 microspheres were formed with a particle size distribution between 2 and 6 μm due to self-assembly between PAL and CS. Drug release behavior analysis exhibited the sustained release processes were delayed to varying degrees due to different degradation degrees of CaCO3 microspheres at different pH values. Results also illustrated that these microspheres had a high loading capacity for FA, and possessed good biodegradability. Thus, PAL/CS/FA-CaCO3 microspheres exhibited promise for future applications compared with that of traditional soil conditioners.

We, herein, report the effect of chitosan nanofertilizer comprising of copper (Cu) and salicylic acid (SA) on source activity in maize. Seed treatment and foliar application of chitosan nanofertilizer significantly up-regulated the source activity in developing maize plants. Seed treatment with nanofertilizer induced 1.6 folds higher seedling vigour index, 1.7-3.0 folds higher activities of reserve food mobilizing enzymes in seedlings as compared with control. Foliar application of nanofertilizer (0.01-0.16%) statistically significantly increased the activities of antioxidant enzymes (1.06-1.91 folds), reduced malondialdehyde content and enhanced chlorophyll contents (2 folds) in leaves. Application of nanofertilizer remarkably induced sucrose translocation (2.5-3.5 folds) in internodes which gives subtle clue of higher remobilization of nutrients towards growing cob. The elusive bioactivities of nanofertilizer can be attributed to slow release and synergistic effects of Cu and SA. We claim that chitosan nanofertilizer has immense potential to promote source activity in maize for higher crop yield.

In this work, a novel MOF(Fe)@NaAlg aerogels composite were fabricated by a facile method of ion cross-linking, and characterized via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TG), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and BET surface area analysis. The MOF(Fe)@NaAlg aerogels loaded by ammonium (NH4+) was prepare to the slow-release fertilizer (SRF). The adsorption capacity and swelling of MOF(Fe)@NaAlg(2:10) were 29.4 mg/g and 73 g/g, respectively. The swelling behaviors of MOF(Fe)@NaAlg(2:10) in different saline solutions were investigated. The release assessments confirmed the effective role of MOF(Fe) in slow-release property of the prepared formulation. Also, the prepared fertilizer formulation exhibited excellent water-retention capacity in soil. Therefore, they will have a great potential application in the field of agriculture.

Challenges to food security under conditions of global change are forcing us to increase global crop production. Focussing on belowground plant traits, especially root exudation, has great promise to meet this challenge. Root exudation is the release of a vast array of compounds into the soil. These exudates are involved in many biotic and abiotic interactions. Wild relatives of crops provide a large potential source of information and genetic material and have desirable traits that could be incorporated into modern breeding programs. However, root exudates are currently underexploited. Here, we highlight how the traits of root exudates of crop wild relatives could be used to improve agricultural output and reduce environmental impacts, particularly by decreasing our dependence on pesticides and fertilisers.

The increasing use of forest biomass as a fuel for power plants due to environmental concerns will certainly increase the amount of woody biomass ash produced. Because of the environmental problems derived from woody biomass ash disposal, an important aspect for the sustainable development of the energy sector is the implementation of effective ash management strategies. The purpose of this study is to assess the environmental impacts of woody biomass ash landfarming for soil amelioration through a Life Cycle Assessment. The baseline scenario corresponds to the current most common practice of woody biomass ash management (landfilling), and two different landfarming alternatives were assessed: liming and fertilisation. Credits were given to the system due to the substitution of three traditional liming products and five traditional fertilisers. Woody biomass ash landfarming presented satisfactory performance in five impact categories under study in comparison to landfilling. When woody biomass ash was used for liming, the environmental savings were more pronounced when substituting hydrated lime. For potassium supply, the substitution of potassium nitrate by woody biomass ash presented the best environmental performance, while for phosphorus supply, the environmental savings were more pronounced substituting single superphosphate. However, in four impact categories, the environmental impacts of ash landfarming exceeded the impacts of ash landfilling, due to the emission to soil of nutrients and trace elements to soil. But this does not necessarily imply increased risks for the environment, as the potential pollutants leaching depends on their bioavailability in the soil.

The main objective of this work was to study the possibility of using polysaccharides and lignin as a coating material for water-soluble triple superphosphate (TSP) granular fertilizers. In this study, composites based on three polysaccharides (sodium alginate (alginic acid sodium salt): AL, kappa-carrageenan: CR and carboxymethyl cellulose sodium salt: CM) and lignin (LG) were prepared. The lignin used was extracted from olive pomace (OP) biomass using the alkali method. The morphological, mechanical, and surface properties as well as the thermal behavior of the coatings were characterized and compared. Their morphology and thickness revealed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed good adhesion between the fertilizer and coating materials. The results showed that the lignin-carrageenan formulation (LGCR) exhibited the highest water absorbency and elastic modulus. Release tests showed the effect of the TSP/biopolymer mass ratio and that the slowest P release was obtained with the LGCR@TSP formulation composite within 3 day. In addition, 59.5% and 72.5% of P was released after 3 days with the TSP/biopolymer mass ratios of 5/1 and 15/1, respectively, compared to 100% P release with the uncoated TSP.
