Abstract: Explosions of organic vapours in chlorine atmospheres present a hazard in the chemical industry and very little has been published in this field. This paper describes the spontaneous ignitions of mixtures of 1,4-dioxane and chlorine in a closed vessel at temperatures between 80 and 300°C with total initial pressures up to 50 kPa. The influence of light, state of the vessel walls, temperature, initial pressure and composition were studied. In all cases a slow oxidation of dioxane was observed. Within certain limits of temperature and pressure, the slow reaction was followed by autoignition. In contranst to dioxane/oxygen mixtures, no cool flame phenomenon was observed. The products of both the slow reaction and combustion were determined and on this basis a reaction mechanism is proposed.
