We introduce a method that enables swarms of lightweight spacecrafts to correctly set up trailing formations that would allow to successfully perform continuous shooting actions aimed at deflecting NEAs by means of laser ablation. The method uses a computational procedure that provides post-Newtonian (p-N) data necessary to build up these formations, as well as to efficiently control the spacecrafts in the swarms. In fact, these data allow to coordinately shoot at cataloged NEAs and are therefore essential for the multiple action laser methods to become the most effective to deflect NEAs (if we exclude, obviously, the destructive methods). For it turns out that these data provide significant corrections to the shooting spots and instants predicted with the current formulae. The reason is that both the equations for the relative motions and the control formulae take into account (for the first time) the gravitational gradients from the spacecrafts to the NEAs.

We introduce five post-Newtonian tracking formulae that would allow increasing the accuracy of the shooting systems on board autonomous LEO laser trackers. These formulae should be used when the current formulae cannot provide instants close enough to the optimal instants at which the trackers could safely shoot down unwished LEO middle-distant targets. In fact, they allow the trackers to produce not only the safest shooting actions, but also the most efficient ablations that might make the targets fall into the atmosphere for them to burn. The fact of the matter is in the falsifiability procedure introduced below, which allows to simulate sequences of unharming shooting actions with very narrow laser beams leading to identify the optimal pointing directions to previously selected debris objects whose size and composition are representative of these targets.

The effects of ocean acidification, a major anthropogenic impact on marine life, have been mainly investigated in laboratory/mesocosm experiments. We used the CO2 vents at Ischia as a natural laboratory to study the long-term effects of ocean acidification on the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus population resident in low-pH (7.8 ± 0.2) compared to that at two control sites (pH 8.02 ± 0.00; 8.02 ± 0.01). The novelty of the present study is the analysis of the sea urchin immune cells, the sentinels of environmental stress responses, by a wide-ranging approach, including cell morphology, biochemistry and proteomics. Immune cell proteomics showed that 311 proteins were differentially expressed in urchins across sites with a general shift towards antioxidant processes in the vent urchins. The vent urchin immune cells showed higher levels of total antioxidant capacity, up-regulation of phagosome and microsomal proteins, enzymes of ammonium metabolism, amino-acid degradation, and modulation of carbon metabolism proteins. Lipid-hydroperoxides and nitric oxide levels were not different in urchins from the different sites. No differences in the coelomic fluid pH, immune cell composition, animal respiration, nitrogen excretion and skeletal mineralogy were observed. Our results reveal the phenotypic plasticity of the immune system of sea urchins adapted to life at vent site, under conditions commensurate with near-future ocean acidification projections.

Marine ecosystems are globally threatened by human activities, but some areas, such as those affected by abandoned industrial plants, show an overlap of acute and chronic impacts, which determine a considerable deterioration of their health status. Here we report the results of a research conducted on coastal sewers that discharge their loads in the highly contaminated area of Bagnoli-Coroglio (Tyrrhenian Sea, Western Mediterranean). The sampling area is characterized by heavy industrial activities (a steel plant using coal, iron and limestone) started in 1905 and ceased in 1990, which left widespread heavy metals and hydrocarbon contamination. After taking into account the potential influence of sediment grain size ranges through their inclusion as covariates in the analysis, we tested the potential impact of sewage discharge on the total abundance and multivariate structure of meiofaunal assemblages, as well as on the abundance of single taxa. The organic matter was analysed in terms of total phytopigment and biopolymeric carbon concentrations. Nematoda, Copepoda (including their nauplii), and Tardigrada were the most abundant meiofaunal taxa at all sites, but nematodes did not show a consistent pattern relative to the sewage outfalls. However, the sewer located in the historically most contaminated area showed a minimal abundance of all taxa, including nematodes, while copepods were relatively less abundant at the two southernmost sewers. Comparing the north vs. south site of the sewers, higher meiofaunal abundances were observed in the southward part, likely as a result of the local circulation. The results of this study indicate the general adaptation of meiofauna to multiple stressors (sewage discharge, superimposed to chronic industrial contamination) and its likely modulation by other local processes. They also provide relevant baseline information for future restoration interventions that would take into account the spatial variation of target organisms as needed.

Klebsiella pneumoniae is the most common Klebsiella species infecting animals and is one of the causing agents of mastitis in cows. The rise of antimicrobial resistance in K. pneumoniae, particularly in strains producing extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) and/or carbapenemases, is of concern worldwide. Recently (Regulation UE No 2022/1255), carbapenems and cephalosporins in combination with β-lactamase inhibitors have been reserved only to human treatments in the European Union. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of cattle as carrier of human pathogenic carbapenem-resistant (CR) and ESBL-producing K. pneumoniae. On this purpose, a study involving 150 dairy farms in Parma province (Northern Italy) and 14 non replicate K. pneumoniae isolates from patients admitted at Parma University-Hospital was planned. Four multidrug resistant (MDR) K. pneumoniae strains were detected from 258 milk filters collected between 2019 and 2021. One carbapenemase KPC-3-positive K. pneumoniae ST307 (0.4 %; 95 % CI - 0.07 - 2.2) was detected in milk filters. The isolate also harboured OXA-9, CTX-M-15 and SHV-106 determinants, together with genes conferring resistance to aminoglycosides (aac(3')-IIa, aph (3″)-Ib, aph (6)-Id), fluoroquinolones (oqxA, oqxB, qnrB1), phosphonic acids (fosA6), sulphonamides (sul2), tetracyclines (tet(A)6) and trimethoprim (dfrA14). One KPC-3-producing K. pneumoniae ST307 was identified also among the human isolates, thus suggesting a possible circulation of pathogens out of the clinical settings. The remaining three bovine isolates were MDR ESBL-producing K. pneumoniae characterized by different genomic profiles: CTX-M-15, TEM-1B and SHV-187 genes (ST513); CTX-M-15 and SHV-145 (ST307); SHV-187 and DHA-1 (ST307). Occurrence of ESBL-producing K. pneumoniae in milk filters was 1.2 % (95 % CI 0.4-3.4). All the isolates showed resistance to aminoglycosides, 3rd-generation cephalosporins, and fluoroquinolones. Among the human isolates, two multidrug resistant ESBL-producing K. pneumoniae ST307 were found, thus confirming the circulation of this high-risk lineage between humans and cattle. Our findings suggest that food-producing animals can carry human pathogenic microorganisms harboring resistance genes against carbapenems and 3rd-generation cephalosporins, even if not treated with such antimicrobials. Moreover, on the MDR K. pneumoniae farms, the antimicrobial use was much higher than the Italian median value, thus highlighting the importance of a more prudent use of antibiotics in animal productions.

The aim of this study was to test the effects of short- and long-term exposure to high pCO 2 on the invasive polychaete Branchiomma boholense (Grube, 1878), (Sabellidae), through the implementation of a transplant experiment at the CO 2 vents of the Castello Aragonese at the island of Ischia (Italy). Analysis of carbonic anhydrase (CA) activity, protein tissue content and morphometric characteristics were performed on transplanted individuals (short-term exposure) as well as on specimens resident to both normal and low pH/high pCO 2 environments (long-term exposure). Results obtained on transplanted worms showed no significant differences in CA activity between individuals exposed to control and acidified conditions, while a decrease in weight was observed under short-term acclimatization to both control and low pH, although at low pH the decrease was more pronounced (∼20%). As regard individuals living under chronic exposure to high pCO 2 , the morphometric results revealed a significantly lower (70%) wet weight of specimens from the vents with respect to animals living in high pH/low pCO 2 areas. Moreover, individuals living in the Castello vents showed doubled values of enzymatic activity and a significantly higher (50%) protein tissue content compared to specimens native from normal pH/low pCO 2 . The results of this study demonstrated that B. boholense is inclined to maintain a great homeostatic capacity when exposed to low pH, although likely at the energetic expense of other physiological processes such as growth, especially under chronic exposure to high pCO 2 .

Sars-CoV-2 is a respiratory virus that can access the central nervous system, as indicated by the presence of the virus in patients' cerebrospinal fluid and the occurrence of several neurological syndromes during and after COVID-19. Growing evidence indicates that Sars-CoV-2 can also trigger the acute onset of mood disorders or psychotic symptoms. COVID-19-related first episodes of mania, in subjects with no known history of bipolar disorder, have never been systematically analyzed. Thus, the present study assesses a potential link between the two conditions. This systematic review analyzes cases of first appearance of manic episodes associated with COVID-19. Clinical features, pharmacological therapies, and relationships with pre-existing medical conditions are also appraised. Medical records of twenty-three patients fulfilling the current DSM-5 criteria for manic episode were included. Manic episodes started, on average, after 12.71±6.65 days from the infection onset. Psychotic symptoms were frequently reported. 82.61% of patients exhibited delusions, whereas 39.13% of patients presented hallucinations. A large discrepancy in the diagnostic workups was observed. Mania represents an underestimated clinical presentation of COVID-19. Further studies should focus on the pathophysiological substrates of COVID-19-related mania and pursue appropriate and specific diagnostic and therapeutic workups.

Savalia savaglia is an ecosystem engineer listed as Near-Threatened by the IUCN, even though effective management and proper monitoring efforts to assess its distribution is still lacking. The record of large, long-established colonies can indicate the occurrence of areas with limited human local pressure. These areas may be considered as proxies for the creation of baselines of reference useful to design restoration strategies. The aim of this work was to update the distribution of S. savaglia Mediterranean populations to develop an Ecological Niche Model, highlighting potential areas for future monitoring programs. Occurrence data were collected and harmonized into a single dataset using the scientific literature and validated observations to feed a presence-only MaxEnt model, obtaining a basin-level potential distribution of the species. The results of our study can support decision-makers in marine spatial planning measures including the preservation of mesophotic environments and prioritizing areas for conservation.

Habitat heterogeneity is a major structuring agent of benthic assemblages promoting high turnover in species composition and ultimately contributing to overall higher diversity. Submarine canyons, a pervasive feature of the continental margins worldwide, increase habitat heterogeneity at multiple spatial scales. In the present study, we test the hypothesis that different topographic structures or/and food sources controlling the abundance, biomass and biodiversity (using meiofauna and nematodes as a model study) in canyon systems. To do so, we compared different topographic structures: canyon edge, thalweg and axis, and the upper shelf and open slope in the Gulf of Gioia (Gioia and Petrace Canyons) and in the Gulf of Naples (Dohrn Canyon) (Tyrrhenian Sea) at different depths. Our results suggest that meiofaunal abundance and biomass are generally higher in the canyon thalwegs than in the canyon edge or adjacent open slopes at regional scale. This pattern is not always confirmed for biodiversity and when thalwegs are compared to different topographic structures within the Gioia Canyon system. In our study, the role of food quantity and quality is preeminent to explain the spatial distribution of meiofaunal variables among different topographic structures at 200-m while habitat heterogeneity become relevant at 500-m and within the Dohrn Canyon. In Gioia and Petrace Canyons we observed a high food availability is associated to specific topographic structures (thalwegs) that influenced the meiofaunal abundance and diversity distribution and nematode diversity and species composition. Each topographic structure shows a high number of exclusive species that contributes to a high species turnover and high overall biodiversity in all canyon systems. Changes in nematode composition determine also differences in the functional diversity (trophic guilds composition) and life strategy of the nematode assemblages. Our findings reveal that the presence of different topographic structures influences the spatial distribution of food quality and quantity that determine the presence of exclusive taxa and species enhancing both local and regional diversity.

Several strategies have been in place in food animal production to reduce the unnecessary use of antimicrobial agents. Beyond the monitoring of their use, the evaluation of the effect of these strategies on the occurrence and types of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) associated genes is crucial to untangle the potential emergence and spread of AMR to humans through the food chain. In the present study, the occurrence of these genes was evaluated in commensal Escherichia coli isolated from broiler carcasses "produced without the use of antibiotics" in 3 antibiotic-free (AB-free) farms in Italy in 2019. Sequenced data were analyzed along with publicly available genomes of E. coli collected in Italy from the broiler food chain from previous years (2017-2018). The genetic relationships among all 93 genomes were assessed on de novo assemblies by in silico MLST and SNP calling. Moreover, the resistomes of all genomes were investigated. According to SNP calling, genomes were gathered in three clades. Clade A encompassed, among others, ST117, ST8070, and ST1011 genomes. ST10 belonged to clade B, whereas Clade C included ST58, ST297, ST1101, and ST23 among others. Regarding the occurrence of AMR genes, a statistically significant lower occurrence of these genes in the genomes of this study in comparison to the public genomes was observed considering the whole group of genes as well as genes specifically conferring resistance to aminoglycosides, β-lactams, phenicols, trimethoprim, and lincosamides. Moreover, significant reductions were observed by comparing the whole group of AMR associated mutations, as well as those specifically for fluoroquinolones and fosfomycin resistance. Although the identification of 3° generation cephalosporin resistance associated genes in AB-free E. coli is a concern, this study provides a first indication of the impact of a more prudent use of antimicrobial agents on the occurrence of AMR genes in Italian broiler production chain. More studies are needed in next years on a higher number of genomes to confirm this preliminary observation.

© 2017 Elsevier Ltd Many studies predict negative effects of ocean acidification on marine organisms, potentially leading to loss of biodiversity and ecosystem function. Research on species inhabiting naturally high pCO2 environments, such as volcanic CO2 vents, offers an opportunity to understand the molecular mechanisms involved in high pCO2 regulation. Here we investigate the relative expression of NADH dehydrogenase, sodium-hydrogen antiporter (NHE), carbonic anhydrase (CA) and paramyosin genes from two non-calcifying sibling Nereididae polychaetes species, Platynereis cfr massiliensis, collected in the shallow CO2 vents off Ischia (Italy; 40°43′52.0″N 13°57′46.2″E and 40°43′55.5″N 13°57′48.4″E), and P. dumerilii collected in an area nearby (40°43′34.51″N; 13°57′35.7″E). The origin of the worms was confirmed using restriction enzyme digest. NHE and paramyosin expressions were both significantly increased in P. dumerilii relative to the P. cfr massiliensis vent populations. Furthermore, a seven day laboratory transfer experiment to lower/higher pCO2 conditions was conducted to investigate the effects on the short term gene expression. The transfer experiment of the non-vent worms to high pCO2 conditions showed no significant effect on any of the genes analysed, however, two genes (NADH dehydrogenase and NHE) from worms of the vent population were significantly down-regulated under low pCO2. These findings will help to gain further insights into the cellular mechanisms affected by pCO2 changes in two polychaete species.
