Abstract

The prevalence of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) has been reported to be lower in Japan than in many other countries. However, extensive surveillance for CRE carriage has not been performed in Japan.To investigate the prevalence of CRE carriage in Japan among convalescent patients considered to be at high risk of being CRE carriers using an improved selective culture medium.A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 22 acute care hospitals (ACHs) and 21 long-term care hospitals (LTCHs) in northern Osaka from December 2015 to January 2016. Patients who used incontinence aids, an enteral feeding tube or a urinary catheter were enrolled. Faecal specimens were examined using the newly developed M-ECC for imipenemase (IMP)-producing CRE, which is the most prevalent form of CRE in Japan. The positive isolates were analysed by polymerase chain reaction and sequencing. Risk factors associated with carriage were analysed by logistic regression.Among 1507 patients, 184 (12.2%) carried CRE. The percentage of positive patients was significantly higher in LTCHs (14.9%) than in ACHs (3.6%) (P0.001). Risk factors for CRE carriage were longer hospital stay [odds ratio (OR) 2.59; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.87-3.60], enteral feeding (OR 3.03, 95% CI 2.08-4.42) and antibiotic exposure (OR 2.00, 95% CI 1.40-2.87). Among the 233 CRE isolates identified, 223 were IMP producers; the remaining isolates did not produce carbapenemase.This is the first Japanese report to demonstrate the significant spread of CRE in both ACHs and LTCHs using an improved selective medium. A coordinated regional approach may help to prevent further spread.

Abstract

We investigated the effect of Li doping into Er-doped GaAs and Er, O-codoped GaAs on the enhancement of photoluminescence (PL) intensity. The Li doping into Er-doped GaAs increases the integrated intensity by 50 times higher than that from the Er-doped layer without Li doping. Main peak position of the Er, Li-codoped layer was slightly smaller than that of the Er-doped layer. This difference of peak position means that Li doping induced Er-related active centers different from those in Er-doped layer are formed. In the previous study, we have revealed that oxygen doping into Er-doped GaAs produced sharp and strong PL peak intensity due to Er-2O center. The Li doping into Er, O-codoped GaAs increases the integrated intensity twice higher than that from the Er, O-codoped layer without Li doping. However, the peak intensity decreased and the PL spectrum shape becomes broader. These results indicated that Li doping partly modified the Er-2O center and introduced many kinds of luminescent Er centers.

Abstract

High-quality epitaxial CdTe layers were grown on Si(2 1 1) substrates in a metalorganic vapor-phase epitaxy. In order to obtain homo-orientation growth on Si substrates, pre-treatment of the substrates was carried out in a separate chamber by annealing them together with pieces of GaAs at 800–900 °C in a hydrogen environment. Grown epilayers had very good substrate adhesion. The full-width at half-maximum value of the X-ray double crystal rocking curve from the CdTe(4 2 2) plane decreased rapidly with increasing layer thickness, and remained between 140–200 arcsec for layers thicker than 18 μm. Photoluminescence measurement at 4.2 K showed high-intensity bound excitonic emission and very small defect-related deep emissions indicating the high crystalline quality of the grown layers.

Abstract

We measured radiation heating induced by secondary particles from 12-GeV primary proton–beam interactions. A newly developed “cryogenic calorimeter” technique was employed to precisely measure heat fluxes of 0.2–1 W deposited in a large copper absorber. The results were compared with calculations by using Monte-Carlo codes, MARS and PHITS.

Abstract

Using low-energy electron diffraction, Auger electron spectroscopy and STM, the peculiarities of the Al/Si(1 0 0) interface formation at 400–550 °C has been studied. At low Al coverages (∼0.05–0.2 ML), interaction of Al atoms with a top Si(1 0 0) substrate layer proceeds by two competitive mechanisms. First mechanism prevails at Si(1 0 0) surface with a low density of missing-dimer defects and resides in the formation of the specific Al–Si clusters. The second mechanism is stimulated by the presence of missing-dimer defects and resides in substitutional incorporation of Al atoms in the top Si(1 0 0) substrate layer. Both mechanisms result in the liberation of the surface Si atoms which agglomerate into flat islands. The Si mass transport and Al incorporation have been treated quantitatively, the composition of the Al–Si clusters has been estimated and the cluster structural model has been constructed.

The three-body effect is found to be stronger for PbPb than for SPb. Abstract

K−/K+ and p ¯ / p ratios measured in 158 A·GeV Pb+Pb collisions are shown as a function of transverse momentum PT and centrality in top 8.5% central region. Little centrality dependence of the K−/K+ and p ¯ / p ratios is observed. The transverse mass mT distribution and dN/dy of K+, K−, p and p ¯ around mid-rapidity are obtained. The temperature Tch and the chemical potentials for both light and strange quarks (μq, μs) at chemical freeze-out are determined by applying simple thermodynamical model to the present data. The resultant μq, μs and Tch are compared with those obtained from similar analysis of SPS S+A and AGS Si+A data. The chemical freeze-out temperature Tch at CERN energies is higher than thermal freeze-out temperature Tfo which is extracted from mT distribution of charged hadrons. At AGS energies Tch is close to Tfo.

Abstract

Recent results of analyses on hadron spectra from the focusing spectrometer experiment NA44 are presented. One-, two- and three-particle hadron spectra in the mid-rapidity region at CERN/SPS energy have been measured. The mT inverse-slopes of proton and anti-proton in collision systems from p+A to Pb+Pb are discussed. Spectra of deuteron, triton and anti-deuteron are presented, and the flow effect on the composite particle spectra are discussed. The two-particle interferometry analysis is made for the π±π± and K+K+ correlations in the central Pb+Pb collisions, and the dependences of interferometric parameters on the transverse mass and the multiplicity are discussed.

Abstract

The inelastic scattering processes of atoms associated with the excitation of the translational vibration mode on molecules adsorbed on solid surfaces, which have been reported in recent experiments have been investigated by numerical calculations using a simple model. In this model, in order to estimate the inelastic effects it is considered that the molecule position can move parallel to the surface one-dimensionally when the molecule is in collision with a moving atom. The numerical results show that there is a branching of the inelastic scattering waves and its behaviour depends strongly on the angle of the atom incidence as measured from the surface.

Abstract

Silicon-doped GaAs layers have been grown on patterned GaAs(111)A substrates with equilateral triangles by molecular beam epitaxy. Lateral carrier confinement structures are confirmed by cathodoluminescence (CL) spectra: a (111)A surface is p -type and (311)A sidewalls are n -type. The confined (111)A region is reduced to submicron scale by reducing the size of the photoresist pattern. Furthermore, strong emission from the confined region and lateral modulation of peak wavelength are observed in the CL spectra of Al 0.3 Ga 0.7 As GaAs single quantum well grown on the patterned (111)A substrate. This modulation is caused by a decrease in GaAs layer thickness due to Ga migration from the (111)A surface to the (311)A surface. These results indicate that MBE growth on the patterned (111)A substrate is effective for fabricating submicron carrier confinement or optical confinement structures.

Abstract

The electrical properties of Se-doped Al0.3Ga0.7As layers grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) on GaAs(111)A substrates have been investigated by Hall-effect and deep level transient spectroscopy (DLTS) measurements. In Se-dopped GaAs layers, the carrier concentration depends on the misorientation angle of the substrates; it decreases drastically on the exact (111)A surface due to the re-evaporation of Se atoms. By contrast, in Se-doped AlGaAs layers, the decrease is not observed even on exact oriented (111)A. This is caused by the suppression of the re-evaporation of Se atoms, by Se-Al bonds formed during the Se-doped AlGaAs growth. An AlGaAs/GaAs high electron mobility transistor (HEMT) structure has been grown. The Hall mobility of the sample on a (111)A 5° off substrate is 5.9 × 104 cm2/V · s at 77 K. This result shows that using Se as the n-type dopant is effective in fabricating devices on GaAs(111)A.

Abstract

Diffusion of Si-acceptors (Si occupying As sites) in δ-doped GaAs grown on GaAs(111)A has been investigated by secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS). We have measured the diffusion parameters in GaAs(111)A and found that they differ from those in GaAs(001). The diffusion coefficient in GaAs(111)A is smaller than that in GaAs(001) and the activation energy in GaAs(111)A is larger than that in GaAs(001). Furthermore, the diffusion mechanism of Si in GaAs(111)A has been investigated by photoluminescence; we have found that in p-type layers Si-donors (Si occupying Ga sites) diffuse easily to As sites. The activation energy of Si-acceptor diffusion is 2.74 ± 0.11 eV . These results indicate that Si-acceptors are more stable than Si-donors.

Abstract

The aim of our study is to develop NOx sensors that can measure NOx concentrations in exhaust gas. The present study investigates the gas-sensing properties of YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7 − δ thin films, deposited on a SrTiO 3 substrate by the ion-beam sputtering method. The thin film we made exhibits high sensitivity to NO at 350 °C, and the NO sensitivity increases with NO concentration in the range 30–3000 ppm NO. At 350 °C, the YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7 − δ thin film shows hardly any sensitivity to CO, H 2 and CH 4 gases that are also present in exhaust gas, giving it excellent selectivity. It is generally considered that the resistance of YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7 − δ irreversibly increases due to the absorption of NO, but this irreversible increase of the YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7 − δ resistance is not observed in the thin films we made.

Abstract

The effects of off-angle of misoriented GaAs(111)A substrates on the thermal stability of Si atoms in Si atomic layer doped GaAs layers have been investigated by SIMS. This off-angle is found to strongly affect diffusivity; the diffusion coefficient for exactly (111)A is the smallest, and becomes large as the off-angle increases in the [110] or [001] direction. Such a diffusivity dependence can be understood by the density of the step, which is caused by substrate misorientation. Furthermore, the diffusivity of Si depends on the occupation site of Si; Si atoms in p-type layers where the Si occupies As sites are more stable than Si atoms in n-type layers where the Si occupies Ga sites. These results show that Si δ-doped layers on (111)A are suitable as p-type doped thin layers with their low diffusivity in electronic devices.

Abstract

We have studied the effect of repeated doses of thiopentone on motor evoked potentials (MEP) after transcranial magnetic stimulation in 13 patients. Thiopentone was administered i.v. in an initial dose of 2 mg kg-1, followed by repeated doses (1 mg kg-1 every 3 min) until the appearance of burst suppression on the EEG. The total dose administered was mean 10.7 (SD 2.6) mg kg-1. The magnetic coil was placed over the MEP scalp stimulation region and evoked electromyographic responses were recorded from the contralateral abductor pollicis brevis. After an initial dose of thiopentone, reproducible MEP responses were recorded in all patients, but amplitudes were reduced to 42.8% of baseline values. Further administration of repeated doses of thiopentone produced a dose-dependent decrease in success rate of MEP recordings and a significant reduction in MEP amplitude (P0.01). Latency did not change significantly, although there was a tendency to increase. During burst suppression on the EEG, MEP was not recorded successfully in all patients. We conclude that MEP recording during the administration of thiopentone is feasible only at a minimum dose, with a marked reduction in MEP amplitude.

Abstract

This work intends to develop a new copper wire which resists stress-corrosion cracking (SCC). The improved copper wire has a composite structure made of two materials, and by recrystallizing only the surface layer, the surface tensile stress is reduced by keeping the properties equal to a drawn copper wire. The resistance to SCC of the improved copper wire is evaluated by bending and pulling tests in the accelerated solution. The mean times until the occurrence of SCC on the improved copper wire advance from 2 to 9 times as long as those of drawn copper wire.

Nucleon-nucleus spin-spin interactions are constructed using generalized spin-spin operators, then formulas for spin-spin analyzing cross sections are derived in DWBA. A valence-nucleon model is used to derive potentials from effective nucleon-nucleon interactions, including exchange contributions. Spin-spin cross sections are then calculated in DWBA for 27 Al, 59 Co, and 93 Nb in the neutron energy range 10 to 60 MeV and compared to data.

α-Thienyl or α-pyrrolyl groups were bonded to α-positions of benzo[2,1-b:3,4-b']dithiophene-4,5-dione via Stille coupling reactions followed by intramolecular benzoin condensations, giving a novel terameric π-congugated oligomers. UV-vis and elctrochemical studies for these oligomers indicate that the heterocyclic substituents selectively destabilize the HOMO-level to result in small HOMO-LUMO gaps.

The scattering of 7 Li by nuclei is investigated by folding-model interactions, assuming 7 Li to consist of an α -particle and a triton. For 58 Ni targets, effects of tensor interactions which include excitations of 7 Li are very important in explaining the measured cross sections and vector and tensor analyzing powers in elastic scattering, where normalizations of the interaction are not necessary.

Abstract

Elastic and inelastic scattering of 7Li by 58Ni at Elab = 14.2 and 20.3 MeV is investigated theoretically, special emphasis being laid on polarization phenomena. A parameter-independent study shows second-rank tensor interactions to be the main origin of tensor analyzing powers for both elastic and inelastic scattering. Coupled-channel (CC) calculations using cluster-folding interactions which include the tensor terms are found to be successful in reproducing the data for cross sections and vector and tensor analyzing powers, when projectile excitation effects are sufficiently taken into account. Scattering of 6Li by 58Ni at Elab = 20.0 MeV is also investigated by the CC calculation, where successes similar to the 7Li case are obtained in understanding experimental data.

Abstract

In elastic scattering from nuclei, the vector analyzing powers of polarized deuterons are found to be strongly affected by the imaginary parts of optical potentials. A definite relationship is postulated between the analyzing power and the imaginary potential depth. The relationship shows that the shell-closure effect of the analyzing power observed for Se isotope targets is the reflection of the isotope dependence of the imaginary potential. Coupled-channel calculations show that some low-lying levels of the target nuclei are responsible for the isotope dependence. By the use of the relationship, deuteron scattering from medium-weight nuclei at incident energies of about 15 MeV are reanalyzed to give a systematic variation with target mass number for the potential parameters, which is emphasized by a nearly constant volume integral of the real potential per pair of interacting nucleons.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to present the analysis and design considerations of a graphite fishing rod. A large displacement and small strain analysis was performed and good agreement was obtained with experimental data. In addition, the following was found: The bending strain distribution of the fishing rod varies with the load level and the point which shows the maximum bending strain travels from the tip to butt area with increasing load. The fracture of the fishing rod occurs at the load when the bending strain reaches the smaller of the material failure strain and the critical buckling strain. By the computer aided design method proposed here, analytical predictions of the fracture load and the fracture location were calculated, and good correlation was obtained with experimental data.

Abstract

This paper reviews our current activities in hot electron transistors, and then describes recent advances in the RHET technology using InGaAs-based materials. The RHET's emitter common current gain is typically 10 to 17, with a maximum of 25, which is about four times greater than that of a GaAs-based RHET. The collector current peak-to-valley ratio reaches 19.3, with a maximum of 21.7, eight times that of the GaAs-based RHET. These are followed by theoretical and experimental analyses of the RHET's DC performance. It is found that theoretical and experimental results do not agree for the GaAs-based RHET but agree well for the InGaAs-based RHET.

We made a transient analysis of an InGaAs/In(AlGa)As resonant tunneling hot electron transistor (RHET) using time-dependent ensemble Monte Carlo simulation. We simulated the transient characteristics of electron transport in the collector barrier region and the collector current of the RHET. We accounted for the hot electron current and displacement current. We found that the collector current delay is about half the transit time due to the displacement current.

New representations of polarizations of spin 3 2 particles are proposed for elastic scattering. They are useful in investigating spin-dependent interactions. The application to 7 Li 58 Ni scattering gives weak spin-orbit interactions and rather strong tensor ones of 7 Li.
