Many deep learning detectors have been proposed to address the scale variation issue in pedestrian detection. However, it is still far from being fully solved because most of these detectors handle the issue by directly fusing multiple extracted features with the weighted average or concatenation. Therefore, this paper designs a novel and effective anchor-free network (namely MPAF-Net) for multi-scale pedestrian detection. Specifically, we first improve Res2Net as our backbone network by designing a novel bottleneck block to make the proposed detector has a strong multi-scale representation ability for pedestrians. Furthermore, based on Conditional Random Fields (CRFs), the multi-scale features obtained from three different feature pyramid levels of backbone network are refined with a designed message passing mechanism. By doing so, the complementary information from the features at other scales can be dynamically passed to enhance the scale-specific feature. Finally, pedestrian detection is simplified as a straightforward center and scale prediction task by performing convolution on the concatenation of refined multi-scale convolution features. This way, the proposed MPAF-Net can be trained in an end-to-end fashion. Experimental results show that MPAF-Net achieves state-of-the-art performance on CityPersons, Caltech, and CrowdHuman benchmarks.

To further improve the thermal efficiency of coal-fired boilers, lower the environmental impact, and minimize the size of system components, the potential utilization of supercritical CO2 (S-CO2) as the working fluid has drawn considerable attention recently. In this study, the thermal characteristics between supercritical CO2(S-CO2) in a vertically upward tube and the flue gas in the combustion chamber were investigated numerically using the standard k-e model, the P-1 radiation model, and the conjugate heat transfer model. The effects of the S-CO2 pressure on the surface heat flux, the wall temperature, the bulk temperature, the bulk velocity, the surface heat transfer coefficient, and the Nusselt number were examined. The distributions of the flue gas temperature and S-CO2 temperature were further elaborated. The results show that the supercritical pressure has a significant effect on the S-CO2 tube wall temperature, the wall temperature is higher under a low S-CO2 pressure. The wall heat flux is dominated by connection in the entrance region of the tube but is contributed by both convection and radiation at larger axial distances. The heat transfer coefficient increases with increasing the supercritical pressure, and the supercritical pressure has slight impact on the tube wall temperature. The present numerical study helps gain improved understanding of the thermal performance and optimize the design of boilers using S-CO2 as the working fluid.

Rehmannia glutinosa Libosch. is a valuable medicinal and industrial crop, in the clinical use of traditional Chinese medicine has been a thousand years of history, grown widely in the central plain of China. Different cultivars have wide differences in crop yield and quality. Furthermore, long-term mixed cultivation has led to a serious confusion between Rehmannia glutinosa germplasms, which has significantly restricted the breeding of fine cultivars. In this study, 25 core Rehmannia glutinosa germplasms were collected and analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to obtain micromorphology. Quantitative taxonomy was then used to identify the genetic relationship between the Rehmannia glutinosa germplasms. Forty agronomic traits, including 24 scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micromorphology traits, were chosen to construct the quantitative taxonomy dendrogram. In addition, expressed sequence tags (EST) derived microsatellite markers were also identified and validated in the 25 different Rehmannia glutinosa germplasms to confirm the genetic relationships. Based on a combination of these approaches, four new cultivars were discovered, and were given the standard names “Huaidihuang 01 2017, Huaidihuang 02 2017, Huaidihuang 03 2017 and Huaidihuang 04 2017” according to the international code of nomenclature for cultivated plants (ICNCP) (1995 edition). The study has provided important pollen and seed micromorphology data, as well as genetic diversity data, that can be used as basis for the scientific classification and identification of Rehmannia glutinosa cultivars. It also indicates the hierarchical status of the newly identified cultivars, which will help in protecting the germplasm resources, as well as in Rehmannia glutinosa introduction, cultivation, and breeding.

Implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) has been increasingly used to prevent sudden death in patients with high risk of ventricular arrhythmias (VAs). Chronic total occlusion (CTO) is a severe condition of coronary artery disease. However, the prognostic impact of CTO in ICD recipients remains controversial. We systematically searched the PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases for documents published before October 1, 2017 to identify studies that investigated the prognostic impact of CTO on VAs and all-cause mortality (ACM) in ICD recipients. The effect size was expressed by hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). Overall, 6 studies with 1,423 patients were included. We found that CTO independently predicted the occurrence of VAs in the global population (HR 1.77, 95% CI 1.14 to 2.76, p = 0.01). Subgroup analysis revealed that CTO only predicted VAs in patients receiving ICD as secondary prevention (HR 1.96, 95% CI 1.55 to 2.48, p0.01). However, CTO was not associated with ACM in the global population (HR 1.51, 95% CI 0.99 to 2.32, p = 0.06). Further subgroup analysis still showed no association between CTO and ACM in patients receiving ICD as primary prevention (HR 1.49, 95% CI 0.43 to 5.21, p = 0.53) or secondary prevention (HR 1.56, 95% CI 0.87 to 2.78, p = 0.13). In conclusion, CTO is an independent predictor of VAs in patients with secondary-prevention ICD, but not for ACM. Our study provided additional evidence for improving the risk stratification and management of VAs in ICD recipients.

As an important parameter of hermetic compressor, the speed value has direct effects on the cooling capacity, control performance and power consumption of the refrigeration system. Therefore, modern refrigeration industry has put forward higher requirement for measuring the speed of the compressor. Conventional speed measurement methods are based on shell vibration and discharge pressure fluctuation. However, shell vibration-based methods require more elaborate instrumentation, leading to more complex and expensive procedure, as well as unsatisfied accuracy. Discharge pressure fluctuation-based methods can destruct mechanical structure and influence the state of fluid flow. This paper proposed a measurement method based on slip signal and presented a Hilbert transform-based algorithm to improve the extraction accuracy and real-time measurement, and to reduce the complexity of the measurement system. Compared with the standard measurements generated by the compressor with encode, under the 1 s sampling time, it is possible to reach a maximum error smaller than ± 1 rpm, which can prove broad application prospect in the refrigeration industry.

Although heteroatom doping in carbon based catalysts have recently received intensive attentions, the role of the intrinsically porous structure of practical carbon materials and their potential synergy with doping atoms are still unclear. To investigate the complex effects, a range of N-doped single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were used to investigate their potential use for O 2 dissociation and the subsequent SO 2 oxidation using density functional theory. It is found that graphite N doping can synergize with the outer surface of SWCNTs to facilitate the dissociation of O 2 . The barrier for the dissociation on dual graphite N-doped SWCNT-(8, 8) is as low as 0.3 eV, and the subsequent SO 2 oxidation is thermodynamically favorable and kinetically feasible. These results spotlight on developing promising carboncatalyst via utilization of porous gemometry and heteroatom-doping of carbon materials simultaneously.

Objective In the detection of seizure onset zones, arterial spin labeling (ASL) can overcome the limitations of positron emission tomography (PET) with 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG), which is invasive, expensive, and radioactive. PET/magnetic resonance (MR) systems have been introduced that allow simultaneous performance of ASL and PET, but comparisons of these techniques with stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG) and comparisons among the treatment outcomes of these techniques are still lacking. Here, we investigate the effectiveness of ASL compared with that of SEEG and their outcomes in localizing mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) and assess the correlation between simultaneously acquired PET and ASL. Methods Between October 2016 and August 2017, we retrospectively studied 12 patients diagnosed with pure unilateral MTLE. We extracted and quantitatively computed values for ASL and PET in the bilateral hippocampus. SEEG findings and outcome were considered the gold standard of lateralization. Finally, the bilateral asymmetry index (AI) was calculated to assess the correlation between PET and ASL. Results Our results showed that hypoperfusion in the hippocampus detected using ASL matched the SEEG-defined epileptogenic zone in this series of patients. The mean normalized voxel value of ASL in the contralateral hippocampus was 0.97 ± 0.19, while in the ipsilateral hippocampus, it was 0.84 ± 0.14. Meanwhile, significantly decreased perfusion and metabolism were observed in these patients (Wilcoxon, p, Highlights • ASL has been increasingly used in presurgical evaluations in epilepsy recent years. • Comparisons of ASL and PET with a PET/MR system using SEEG and treatment outcomes as gold-standard are still lacking. • Decreased perfusion consistent with hypometabolism and SEEG was observed with ASL. • ASL offers an effective non-invasive alternative to PET in evaluation of MTLE.

The dysfunction of endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) is closely associated with diabetic vascular complications. Both glucagonlike peptide-1 receptor (GLP-1R) and silent information regulator 1 (SIRT1) can control systemic glucose homeostasis and protect endothelial cells against hyperglycemia-induced oxidative stress. In this study, we mainly assessed the role played by SIRT1 and GLP-1R and their relationship in regulating the function of late EPCs under hyperglycemia stimulation. Human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were cultured in EGM-2 medium and induced to differentiate into EPCs and 25 mM glucose was used to stimulate EPCs to obtain a hyperglycemia condition. Subsequently, the expression and location of GLP-1R and SIRT1 in EPCs were detected. After GLP-1R or SIRT1 knockdown, or the treatment by GLP-1R agonist and/or SIRT1 agonist/inhibitor, the effects of SIRT1 and GLP-1R and their relationship in regulating the function of late EPCs under hyperglycemia stimulation was studied by detecting the apoptosis, migration, adhesion and angiogenicity abilities of EPCs. Results demonstrated that, in high-glucose stimulated EPCs, the expression of GLP-1R and SIRT1 was down-regulated. The knockdown of either GLP-1R or SIRT1 could increase EPCs apoptosis and weaken the migration, adhesion and angiogenicity abilities of EPCs. In addition, the improvement effects of Exendin-4 or GLP-1R over-expression on EPCs dysfunction could be weakened to some degree under SIRT1 knockdown. In conclusion, both GLP-1R and SIRT1 expression played important roles in regulating EPCs dysfunction under hyperglycemia and the up-regulation of GLP-1R improved the dysfunction of late EPCs by regulating SIRT1 expression.

Due to the lack of rapid and efficient detection methods for the determination of trace organic phosphonate concentrations in the natural aqueous system, little is known about their impact on the ecosystem. Amino trimethylene phosphonic acid (ATMP) is an organic phosphonate that has been widely used in many fields. In the present work, the copper-based organic framework material (Cu-MOF-74) for the specific detection of amino trimethylene phosphonic acid (ATMP) in aqueous solution was prepared by hydrothermal synthesis using 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalic acid (DHTP) as raw material and copper nitrate trihydrate as metal source. The synthesized material can be used as a “turn-on” fluorescent sensor for the specific sensing of ATMP, the fluorescence intensity of Cu-MOF-74 can be enhanced 24.2 times by ATMP (90 μΜ), the emission wavelength of the fluorescence emission spectrum of the system was blue-shifted, and the detection limit (LOD) of ATMP was 0.844 μΜ. Moreover, the mechanism of ATMP greatly increasing the fluorescence intensity of Cu-MOF-74 was investigated by experimental and theoretical calculations of quantum chemistry. The experimental results showed that ATMP was involved in the coordination of open metal sites in Cu-MOF-74. Multiwfn wavefunction analysis results demonstrated that the charge transfer from the benzene ring and hydroxyl groups of the ligand to the metal (LMCT) occurred during the electron excitation of Cu-MOF-74, but after adding ATMP, the coordination of ATMP with copper led to the interruption and reduction of the energy transfer and electron transfer from ligand DHTP to Cu2+, and the fluorescence intensity of Cu-MOF-74 was improved. The Cu-MOF-74 fluorescent probe exhibited excellent anti-interference ability, high selectivity, good fluorescence intensity stability in the short term, so it can be used as a reliable fluorescent probe for the highly specific detection of low concentration ATMP, the revealed microscopic mechanism of Cu-MOF-74 fluorescent probe to ATMP from the atomic level can provide a theoretical basis for the research of new fluorescence detectors.
