Background Relations between characteristics and outcomes of patients in Japan with atrial fibrillation (AF) and the type of medical facility providing their outpatient care are unclear. Methods and results We compared patient characteristics and outcomes between 2 university hospitals (n = 1178), 20 general hospitals (n = 1308), and 41 private clinics (n = 751) (follow-up: 39.3 months) in the prospective SAKURA AF Registry. Private clinic patients were significantly older than university hospital and general hospital patients (73.4 ± 9.2 vs. 70.3 ± 9.8 and 72.6 ± 8.9 years; p Conclusions Adverse clinical events at small to large hospitals appear to be higher than those at private clinics, suggesting that careful attention for preventing stroke/SE and cardiovascular events should be paid to patients at a university or general hospital.

In this paper, we will introduce a game production program to iterate multiple game development cycles in a limited period. In one semester, we executed a game development process thrice, changing members every time. Students had the opportunity to gain experience, working with different people; also, by being provided a time limit for the development process, they learned how to manage development time effectively. Furthermore, by implementing the plan–do–check–act (PDCA) cycle [ASQ] in each development, students had the opportunity to identify and solve problems during the semester. Using this framework, we worked on the following three educational problems in Japan: (1) Mixed development with students of diverse ages and educational levels (2) Consciousness of development time (3) Understanding of each individual׳s strong and weak points Finally, we compared three types of programs (this program, Global Game Jam, and a mentor-based development program) in order to evaluate the aspects of game development that can be learned by them. We discussed how to develop a curriculum using a Game Jam framework. Games together with manga and anime as represented by Japanese technological advances are highly evaluated in other countries. In recent years, games have been developing at a fast rate and a deep understanding of the game development procedures is needed in order to keep up with the advancements in technology. Yet, there has been no consistent education program designed specifically for game production in the Japanese higher education institutions. In contrast to this, game education is on the rise among American and European Universities. A curriculum framework has even been created by the International Game Developers Association (IGDA) with positive progress shown by cooperating with the industry. As very few efforts have been made so far in Japan to develop an education program for game development, there was no common ground where production methodology could be designed and taught. Due to this the industry developed its own unique production styles, and production methods became a trade secret, complicating the relationship between the universities and the industry. Current game development education in Japan consists mostly of lectures conducted by part-time teaching staff hired by several colleges. In response to this, at the Tokyo University of Technology (TUT), we have designed a curriculum in collaboration with Premium Agency, Inc. that aims to offer training in the practical aptitudes that are demanded by the game development industry. We have added lessons to the traditional faculty curriculum, combining lectures and exercises in a game development context, leading to the number of students that are acquiring knowledge in game development skills such as programming, CG and planning to grow year by year. As a result, the development of this game oriented curriculum has been strongly welcomed by the game industry.

We investigated the vertical profiles of (239+240)Pu, (137)Cs, and excess (210)Pb ((210)Pb(ex)) in sediment core samples obtained from two freshwater lakes and two brackish lakes situated near the first commercial spent nuclear fuel reprocessing plant in Rokkasho, Japan, before the final test of the plant using actual spent nuclear fuel. The inventory of (239+240)Pu in those lakes was larger than that in soil in Rokkasho, which indicated the inflow of (239+240)Pu from the catchment area in addition to direct deposition on the lake surfaces. The (137)Cs inventory in sediments of the brackish lakes was lower than that in the soil, which showed that part of the (137)Cs was removed from the sediments by the brackish water or that it was not deposited into the sediments, because of the high solubility of Cs in brackish water. The (137)Cs inventory in sediments of the freshwater lakes was higher than that of the brackish lakes, and comparable with that in soil except for one core sample out of four. The (239+240)Pu/(137)Cs ratio in freshwater lake sediments was higher than that in soil, and that indicated that part of the (137)Cs was lost from the sediments. The low inventory of (137)Cs may be attributable to competition for absorption sites in sediments with ammonium ions formed in the reducing environment which occurs from summer to fall in the sediments. Those data will be used as background data on the artificial radionuclides in the lakes to assess the effect of released radionuclides on their concentrations.

The 222 Rn concentrations in indoor workplaces were measured in Aomori Prefecture, Japan, and the results are reported here. This survey was part of a program to measure background natural radiation dose rate in the prefecture where the first Japanese nuclear fuel cycling facilities are now under construction. The survey of the 222 Rn concentrations in indoor workplaces was carried out at 107 locations from 1996 to 1998. The 222 Rn concentrations were measured for approximately one year at each site with passive Rn detectors, which used a polycarbonate film for counting α-rays and could separate concentrations of 222 Rn from 220 Rn. Weeklong measurements of 222 Rn concentration and working level were carried out with active detectors to get the ratio of 222 Rn concentration during working hours to non-working hours as well as equilibrium factors in selected locations. Diurnal variation of 222 Rn concentration depended on building structure, air-conditioning, time of day and day of the week (week days or weekend). The 222 Rn concentration during working hours was generally lower than that in non-working hours. Although the annual average 222 Rn concentration in indoor occupational environments was higher than that in dwellings, radiation dose for Aomori Prefecture residents from Rn in the former was 14% of the total indoor dose by Rn because of the lower concentration in working hours and lower occupancy factor.

The flt-1 tyrosine kinase gene encodes a high affinity receptor for Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor, and belongs to the so-called `7-Ig' or flt gene family which has characteristics of 7-Immunoglobulin (Ig)-like domains in the extracellular region. This is structurally distantly related to 5-Ig domain-containing receptors such as Fms/Kit/PDGF-R. However, the whole genomic organization for any 7-Ig receptor gene has not been determined yet. To examine the genomic structure of flt-1 and the evolutionary relationship between genes of the 7-Ig and 5-Ig receptor families, we isolated the mouse genomic DNAs carrying all exons of the flt-1 gene. The mouse flt-1 gene consisted of 30 exons, whose exon–intron boundaries were highly related to those in the 5-Ig receptor genes, except for the amino terminal region. The sequences corresponding to the first and second Ig-domains in the flt-1 gene were encoded by four exons, whereas this region was encoded by only two exons in the 5-Ig receptor genes. These results raise the interesting possibility that deletion or insertion mutations of introns in one of these receptor genes took place in the evolutionary generation of the other receptor genes.

We cloned the cDNA of human parainfluenza type 4A virus (PIV-4A) HN gene by reverse-transcription of virus-specific mRNAs and genomic RNA, and determined the complete nucleotide sequence of the HN gene. The predicted HN protein sequence of PIV-4A showed significant relatedness with those of other paramyxoviruses, SV5, NDV, MuV, PIV3, BPIV-3, indicating a common ancestor. The homologies between the viruses suggested that PIV-4A is more closely related to NDV, SV5, and MuV than to the parainfluenza viruses, PIV-3, bovine parainfluenza type 3 virus (BPIV-3), and Sendai virus (SV). Sixty amino acids were commonly conserved among the viruses, other than PIV-4A. Two of these amino acids were substituted in PIV-4A HN and are predicted to be located near the active site of the neuraminidase. The analysis of neuraminidase of PIV-4 revealed that the activity is hardly detectable, suggesting the significant effect of the substituted amino acid sites on neuraminidase activity.

The nucleotide sequence of the hemagglutinin-neuraminidase (HN) gene of human parainfluenza type 2 virus (PIV-2) was determined. The PIV-2 HN gene was 2112 nucleotides excluding poly(A) tail. There was a single large open reading frame in the mRNA which encoded a protein of 571 amino acids with a calculated molecular weight of 63,262. Analysis of the deduced amino acid sequence revealed that there were fourteen potential glycosylation sites and a major hydrophobic region near the N-terminus, which would anchor the protein in the viral membrane. Comparisons of the HN protein sequences of PIV-2 with those of Simian virus 5 (SV5), Sendai virus (SV, parainfluenza virus type 1), human parainfluenza virus type 3 (PIV-3), type 4 (PIV-4), bovine parainfluenza virus type 3 (BPIV-3), mumps virus (MuV), and Newcastle disease virus (NDV) showed definite amino acid sequence relatedness, indicating a common ancestor for these viruses. Furthermore, statistical analysis of the protein sequences suggested a possible evolutionary relatedness among the paramyxoviruses. This is the first time that a phylogenetic tree has been constructed for all the parainfluenza viruses and mumps virus which are infectious to humans. In addition, amino acid sequences involved in hemagglutinating and neuraminidase activities of paramyxovirus were discussed.

An end milling tool having an elongate body which has two flutes defining two elongate lands extending generally in an axial direction of the body. The two lands have first and second flute surface each facing in a direction of rotation of the end mill. The end mill carries at least two peripheral-cutting inserts for peripheral milling, an inner drilling insert for cutting a radially inward portion of a hole, and an outer drilling inserts for cutting a radially outward portion of the hole, each insert being replaceable and of a generally flat configuration having a back face held in contact with the appropriate surface of the body, and a front face opposite to the back face and including a cutting edge. The peripheral-cutting inserts are disposed in a staggered manner alternately in the first and second flute surfaces, such that the first flute surface carries the peripheral-cutting insert which is nearest to the end face of the body. The inner drilling insert is disposed on the end face of the land having the first flute surface, and the outer drilling insert is disposed in an area of the second flute surface adjacent to the end of the body.
