The excellent jet energy resolution required for precise physics measurements at ILC is achievable using a Particle Flow Method and highly granular calorimeters. As it was shown by CALICE international R&D collaboration, the silicon-tungsten imaging electromagnetic calorimeter provides the best granularity, stability and resolution of jet energy measurement. After proving the calorimeter concept with physical prototypes in 2005–2011, an emphasis is now moved to building a technological prototype satisfying challenging requirements. All chosen technologies should be reliable and scalable for a mass production of a future detector. We report on the current status of R&D, in particular, on beam and charge injection tests of the technological prototype and on the tests of ECAL mechanical structure. We also report on our plans to build a realistic prototype detector and test it together with an existing carbon fiber-tungsten mechanical structure. A similar silicon-tungsten calorimeter technology has been recently proposed for the Phase 2 upgrade of CMS end-cap calorimeter and future high energy circular collider projects.

The emission of low energy, 1 A –6 A MeV, medium size, Z =3–12, fragments in 16 O + 27 Al reactions at 94 A MeV has been studied. In addition to a fragmentation component with ∼ 15 A MeV/ c parallel- and transverse momentum shifts, another component with larger momentum width is needed to describe the results. An attempt to use the VUU prescription indicates that secondary decay from excited primary fragments is important.

Hypoxia enhances hypotensive effects of i.v. arachidonic acid (AA), in the rabbit; this phenomenon is correlated with the increased uricemia following hypoxia. Sensitization by hypoxia to AA is blocked by allopurinol, which inhibits the formation of uric acid. Injections of purines, in normoxic rabbits, stimulate also AA hypotension, by the way of a conversion into uric acid, since allopurinol blocks the stimulation produced by injection of adenine or hypoxanthine. Purine sensitization to AA is also observed on stomach strips, without sensitization to PGE 2 or PGI 2 . Uric acid appears to be a potent activator of in vitro PGs biosynthesis, particularly in absence of the antiradicalar couple : hydroquinone plus glutathione. Uric acid may be considered as a hydroxyl radical scavenger; its enhancing action on AA conversions may be due to this property.

Summary 1. At the Jerry Price Seizure Clinic of the Los Angeles Childrens Hospital, the need for a consistent and organized educational program for parents of children with epilepsy was recognized. Customary clinic visits with the doctor were inadequate for this purpose. Courses of group sessions were initiated. This procedure has been carried out for two years and has been found effective in its original aims. 2. It is felt that the parents of children with epilepsy are able through the group sessions to correct their misunderstandings and prejudices and relieve their tensions to some extent. 3. The course is divided into five sessions and attendance is limited to the parents of eight children. The first two sessions are conducted by a physician who is also an epileptologist. At these sessions the physician deals with essentially factual and informative material. He encourages the parents to ask questions and answers them informally. Group discussions are emphasized. 4. The next two sessions are conducted by the psychologist. The two most frequently discussed problems are discipline and behavior. Through discussion and ventilation the parents are helped to accept the problem of the child with epilepsy more intelligently and objectively, resulting in increased emotional support for the child. 5. The final session is conducted by the social worker, who focuses attention upon the child's social relationship and informs the parent of the facilities and services available to them for help with the child. The continuing interest of the Social Service Department in any future problems that may arise is likewise emphasized. 6. It is believed, after a period of more than two years, that the group sessions for parents of children with epilepsy are of material aid and have fulfilled the objectives for which they were designed.
