The purpose of this research was to evaluate the esthetic impact of orthodontic treatment need in adolescents.This cross-sectional study was performed with 1172 adolescents aged 12 (n = 638) years and 15 (n = 534) years from Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. The esthetic impact was the following outcome variables: Aesthetic Component of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need and the Oral Aesthetic Subjective Impact Scale. The normative orthodontic treatment need was assessed by the Dental Health Component of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN-DHC) and by the Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI). Logistic regression models were adjusted, estimating crude odds ratio with the respective 95% confidence intervals. The variables with P ≤0.20 in the individual analyses were tested in multiple logistic regression models, remaining the variables with P ≤0.05.The results showed a statistically significant association for the esthetic impact (Aesthetic Component of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need and the Oral Aesthetic Subjective Impact Scale) when assessing the normative orthodontic treatment need by the DAI (P 0.05). However, there was no significant association between subjective esthetic impact and normative needs when using the IOTN-DHC (P 0.05).DAI was more associated with the adolescents' esthetic concern than IOTN-DHC and should be the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need to be selected to complement the patient's self-perception.

Summary Objective The present study aimed to compare the force of aesthetic wires and their non-aesthetic equivalents from two commercial brands at different displacement points, during the unloading phase at 36 °C. Materials and methods Forty samples (n = 10) were assessed, which were presented in two groups of aesthetic wires and two groups of non-aesthetic wires from the brands GAC® (Dentsply GAC® International, NY, USA) and Aditek®(Cravinhos, SP, Brazil), with 0.016-inch gauge. The orthodontic wires were maintained at a temperature of 36 °C throughout the experiment and they were subjected to the three-point bending test at a speed of 1 mm/min. The unloading values were recorded as 0.5, 1.5, and 2.5 mm of displacement. The data were subjected to Student's t-test and unequal variance t test, at 5% significance level. Results During the unloading phase, the mean force was significantly higher for aesthetic wires than non-aesthetic ones, in the deflection of 2.5 mm, presenting values means of 2.25 N (P = .0213). In deflections of 0.5 mm and 1.5 mm, the orthodontic archwires did not show significant differences in force between the thermally activated wires with aesthetic coating and their non-aesthetic equivalents (P ≥ 0.05). Conclusion It is concluded that during the unloading phase at a temperature of 36 °C, the orthodontic archwires analyzed did not show significant difference in force between thermally activated wires with aesthetic coating and their non-aesthetic equivalents at most displacement points analysed, except for the deflection of 2.5 mm, which showed higher values.

Introduction This study aimed to explore the perception of orthodontic treatment need by using the Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI) and the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN). Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted on a representative random sample (N = 248) of adolescents aged 12 years. The DAI and both components of IOTN were used to evaluate malocclusion. The association between the Dental Health Component of the IOTN with gender and ethnic group were analyzed by chi-square test. The concordances between the indexes were analyzed by the kappa statistic, with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results The prevalence of adolescents with high severity and orthodontic treatment need was 10.5% (95% CI, 6.7-14.3), 36.5% (95% CI, 32.3-44.3), and 73.4% (95% CI, 67.9-78.9) for the Aesthetic Component of the IOTN, Dental Health Component of the IOTN, and DAI, respectively. The indexes showed high agreement for the cases with low treatment need, whereas low concordance was observed for the cases with high treatment need. Conclusions The perception of orthodontic treatment need was assessed differently using DAI and IOTN.

Introduction The purpose of this study was to examine associations among malocclusion and the contextual factors of quality of life and socioeconomic status. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted with a population-based sample of 1256 children from 7 to 10 years old. Malocclusion was assessed clinically; oral health–related quality of life (OHRQoL) was assessed using the Brazilian version of the child perceptions questionnaire; socioeconomic status was determined from data made available by the Research and Planning Institute of Piracicaba, Sao Paulo, Brazil. Initially, bivariate analyses were performed; after this, starting with variables with P ≤0.20, multilevel multiple logistic regression models were estimated, in which the binomial distribution, function of the logistic connection, and criteria for remaining in the model at P ≤0.05 were considered. Results Of the children, 82.1% had some type of malocclusion. Increased age associated with low socioeconomic status was the determinant for occlusal problems. The determination of low OHRQoL appears to be associated with the socioeconomic status in the individual factors, and increased overjet appears to be associated with factors at the contextual level. Conclusions Socioeconomic status and age are risk factors for malocclusion. Of the malocclusions evaluated, increased overjet had the most negative influence on the OHRQoL.
