Abstract

This study investigates the operational performances of a grid-connected microgrid with integrated solar photovoltaic and battery energy storage. The study is based upon the techno-economic specifications and theoretical performance of the distributed energy resource and storage systems, as well as on measured consumer load data and electrical utility retail and distribution data for representative residential and commercial loads for the city of Vasteras, Sweden. The open-source Matlab®-based simulation tool, OptiCE, is used for performing simulations and optimization. To support the attainment of one of the objectives, peak shaving of the consumer load, a battery operational strategy algorithm has been developed to balance peak shaving and PV self-consumption. Comparisons among three types of battery, lead-acid, lithium-ion and vanadium-redox flow, are also performed. A 117 kWp photovoltaic system paired with a lithium-ion battery of 41.1 kWh capacity is the optimal solution found for the considered commercial load. The calculated battery capacity represents the best trade-off for the set multi-objective optimization problem. The simulation of this system predicts the possibility to shave the customer load profile peaks up to 20% for the month of April. The corresponding self-consumption ratio is 88%. Differences in the relationship between the load profiles and the system performance have been qualitatively noted. Furthermore, the simulation results for lead-acid, lithium-ion and vanadium-redox flow battery systems reveal that lithium-ion batteries delivers the best trade-off between total annualized cost and peak shaving performance for both residential and commercial applications.

Abstract

Two large reactors designed for solar water disinfection (SODIS) of harvested rainwater (HRW) were built and tested in Spain (controlled conditions) and Uganda (field testing). Both reactors use V-trough aluminium mirrors and UV-transparent poly(methyl-methacrylate) (PMMA) photo-reactor tubes of diameters, 100 mm and 200 mm, for treating 90L and 140L per batch, respectively. No differences in terms of treatment performances were obtained between both solar reactors. Complete disinfection of synthetic HRW spiked with a consortium of waterborne pathogens (E. coli, S. enteritidis, E. faecalis and MS2 coliphage) was achieved under natural sunlight, obtaining > 5-log reduction values (LRV) of all bacteria for a maximum solar UVA dose of 270 kJ/m2 or 120 min of solar exposure. A 5-LRV for MS2 virus was also achieved with a maximum of up to 620 kJ/m2 of UVA dose or 300 min of solar exposure. Accelerated and natural aging of the UV-transparent PMMA material were also investigated, showing that the material is highly transparent in the UVB (from 7 to 75 %) and UVA (87 %) and photostable, with no significant change in UVB&A transmittance for 9 months under extreme conditions of solar radiation, humidity and temperature. Results for the reactors in the field, in two rural primary schools in Uganda over 1 year, demonstrated excellent performances with complete reductions of the bacterial load in natural HRW to undetectable levels of E. coli, E. faecalis and Total coliforms ( 4 LRV were also attained. An analysis of cost , materials selection and solar resources needed has been carried out to determine the affordability and feasibility of this technology. The results of this analysis demonstrated the potential capability of the 140L solar V-trough reactor for treating HRW, with an estimated cost of €0.0012 per liter.

Abstract

The sparse group lasso optimization problem is solved using a coordinate gradient descent algorithm. The algorithm is applicable to a broad class of convex loss functions. Convergence of the algorithm is established, and the algorithm is used to investigate the performance of the multinomial sparse group lasso classifier. On three different real data examples the multinomial group lasso clearly outperforms multinomial lasso in terms of achieved classification error rate and in terms of including fewer features for the classification. The run-time of our sparse group lasso implementation is of the same order of magnitude as the multinomial lasso algorithm implemented in the R package glmnet. Our implementation scales well with the problem size. One of the high dimensional examples considered is a 50 class classification problem with 10k features, which amounts to estimating 500k parameters. The implementation is available as the R package msgl.

Abstract

Carcinomas of unknown primary origin constitute 3% to 5% of all newly diagnosed metastatic cancers, with the primary source difficult to classify with current histological methods. Effective cancer treatment depends on early and accurate identification of the tumor; patients with metastases of unknown origin have poor prognosis and short survival. Because miRNA expression is highly tissue specific, the miRNA profile of a metastasis may be used to identify its origin. We therefore evaluated the potential of miRNA profiling to identify the primary tumor of known metastases. Two hundred eight formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded samples, representing 15 different histologies, were profiled on a locked nucleic acid-enhanced microarray platform, which allows for highly sensitive and specific detection of miRNA. On the basis of these data, we developed and cross-validated a novel classification algorithm, least absolute shrinkage and selection operator, which had an overall accuracy of 85% (CI, 79%-89%). When the classifier was applied on an independent test set of 48 metastases, the primary site was correctly identified in 42 cases (88% accuracy; CI, 75%-94%). Our findings suggest that miRNA expression profiling on paraffin tissue can efficiently predict the primary origin of a tumor and may provide pathologists with a molecular diagnostic tool that can improve their capability to correctly identify the origin of hitherto unidentifiable metastatic tumors and, eventually, enable tailored therapy.
