11. On Taking Advantage of Opportunistic Meta-Knowledge to Reduce Configuration Spaces for Automated Machine Learning

Abstract

The automated machine learning (AutoML) process can require searching through complex configuration spaces of not only machine learning (ML) components and their hyperparameters but also ways of composing them together, i.e. forming ML pipelines. Optimisation efficiency and the model accuracy attainable for a fixed time budget suffer if this pipeline configuration space is excessively large. A key research question is whether it is both possible and practical to preemptively avoid costly evaluations of poorly performing ML pipelines by leveraging their historical performance for various ML tasks, i.e. meta-knowledge. The previous experience comes in the form of classifier/regressor accuracy rankings derived from either (1) a substantial but non-exhaustive number of pipeline evaluations made during historical AutoML runs, i.e. 'opportunistic' meta-knowledge, or (2) comprehensive cross-validated evaluations of classifiers/regressors with default hyperparameters, i.e. 'systematic' meta-knowledge. Numerous experiments with the AutoWeka4MCPS package suggest that (1) opportunistic/systematic meta-knowledge can improve ML outcomes, typically in line with how relevant that meta-knowledge is, and (2) configuration-space culling is optimal when it is neither too conservative nor too radical. However, the utility and impact of meta-knowledge depend critically on numerous facets of its generation and exploitation, warranting extensive analysis; these are often overlooked/underappreciated within AutoML and meta-learning literature. In particular, we observe strong sensitivity to the `challenge' of a dataset, i.e. whether specificity in choosing a predictor leads to significantly better performance. Ultimately, identifying `difficult' datasets, thus defined, is crucial to both generating informative meta-knowledge bases and understanding optimal search-space reduction strategies., 71 pages

In this paper, we investigate the distribution of the integral of maximum processes which arises naturally in the recent studies. We first establish the estimates for the Malliavin derivative of maximum processes. Then, we obtain the lower and upper bounds for the tail probability of the integral of these maximum processes. Some examples are given to illustrate the theory.

Abstract

Climate change is a major challenge to rural livelihoods in Vietnam, particularly in remote and mountainous areas. Access and use of climate information is considered vital to households’ and communities’ adaptive capacity. This research employed a survey to investigate barriers to the access, and use of, formal climate change information among two groups of farmers (ethnic minority and Kinh) in mountainous areas of Thừa Thien Huế province, Vietnam. Adopting a logit model, the results show that the main barriers were: 1) farmers’ lack of trust of formal climate-related services; 2) farmers’ lack of perceived risk from climate change; and 3) difficulties in balancing climate adaptation and economic benefits of new interventions. Ethnicity was not a barrier, as all farmers looked for climate information from informal channels (friends, neighbors, market actors) rather than from formal channels (agricultural departments, television, radio), although cultural issues such as language did act as a barrier. This research recommends strengthening the networks and interactions between market actors and government staff with local people, through direct communication and adaptation demonstrations. Formal and informal climate information channels should be integrated to effectively combine local resources and indigenous knowledge with advanced technologies, to support farmers’ sustainable and robust climate adaptation responses. Further, the research found that while farmers have access to devices, such as smart phones, they prefer to use these for entertainment rather than climate information. The implications of the study therefore are that any future network or communication activities should be in local languages and note the limitations of using devices for information dissemination.

Abstract

The efforts of this study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of the nanotubular halloysites in weathered pegmatites (NaHWP) for removing heavy metals (i.e., Cd2+, Pb2+) from water. Furthermore, two novel intelligent models, such as teaching-learning-based optimization (TLBO)-artificial neural network (ANN), and TLBO-support vector regression (SVR), named as TLBO-ANN and TLBO-SVR models, respectively, were proposed to predict the Cd2+ and Pb2+ absorption efficiencies from water using the NaHWP absorbent. Databases used, including 53 experiments for Pb2+ absorption and 56 experiments for Cd2+ absorption from water, under the catalysis of different conditions, such as initial concentration of Pb2+ and Cd2+, solution pH, adsorbent weight, and contact time. Subsequently, the TLBO-ANN and TLBO-SVR models were developed and applied to predict the efficiencies of Cd2+ and Pb2+ absorption from water, aiming to evaluate the role as well as the effects of different conditions on the absorption efficiencies using the NaHWP absorbent. The standalone ANN and SVM models were also taken into consideration and compared with the proposed hybrid models (i.e., TLBO-ANN and TLBO-SVR). The results showed that the NaHWP detected in a Kaolin mine (Vietnam) with 70% nanotubular halloysites is a potential adsorbent for water treatment to eliminate heavy metals from water. The two novel hybrid models proposed, i.e., TLBO-ANN and TLBO-SVR, also yielded the dominant performances and accuracies in predicting the Cd2+ and Pb2+ absorption efficiencies from water, i.e., RMSE = 1.190 and 1.102, R2 = 0.951 and 0.957, VAF = 94.436 and 95.028 for the TLBO-ANN and TLBO-SVR models, respectively, in predicting the Pb2+ absorption efficiency from water; RMSE = 3.084 and 3.442, R2 = 0.971 and 0.965, VAF = 96.499 and 96.415 for the TLBO-ANN and TLBO-SVR models, respectively, in predicting the Cd2+ absorption efficiency from water. Furthermore, the validation results also demonstrated these findings in practice through 23 experiments with the accuracies of 98.3% and 98.37% for the TLBO-ANN and TLBO-SVR models, respectively, in predicting the Pb2+ absorption efficiency from water; the accuracies of 98.3% and 97.46% for the TLBO-ANN and TLBO-SVR models, respectively, in predicting the Cd2+ absorption efficiency from water. Besides, solution pH was evaluated as the most critical parameter that can be adjusted to enhance the performance of the absorption of the heavy metals in this study. By using the NaHWP absorbent and the novel proposed intelligent models developed, heavy metals can be eliminated entirely from water, providing pure water/clean freshwater without any risk of adverse health effects for the short term or long term.

Abstract

Solar energy is critical for the power needs. The pipe design of parabolic trough in solar energy application systems is critical in the collection of solar energy. Pipes with micro-grooves etched in the inner wall have been widely utilized not only as cooling systems but also as absorber receivers in parabolic troughs for solar thermal absorbers because microgrooves improve heat transfer between the inside and outside walls of the pipe. Liquid is automatically pumped vertically along the microgrooves on the inner pipe wall by capillary force, thus resulting in increased surface heat exchange. This study aims to determine the optimum design for parabolic troughs in solar energy application systems. In line with this, a capillary-driven two-phase flow model was constructed to investigate the liquid behavior in grooved pipes and to maximize heat transfer in the pipes. Specifically, this study examined the influence of different microgrooves, fluids, temperatures, radii, and widths of grooves to analyze the maximum liquid front position in the inner wall pipe and to optimize the pipe design via genetic algorithm. Results show that the proposed genetic algorithm can solve more accurately the heat exchange problem and provide an optimal solution which has larger wetting front compared with previous research.

Abstract

A prospective study to investigate first aid and initial management for 247 paediatric burn patients from 1 June, 2004 to 31 June, 2006 at the Burn Intensive Care Unit, National Institute of Burns (NIB), Hanoi. Data were collected from documents from referring hospitals and direct interview of patients, relative and transport team as guided by the International Society for Burn Injury (ISBI) and the World Health Organization (WHO). Results showed that cooling the burn surface by cold water was applied in 27.17%. Among 132 patients transferred from other hospitals, fluid resuscitation was given in 102 patients (77.28%) before transferring and over a half of these patients were not given intravenous fluid during the time of transfer, especially for children under 1 year of age (p0.05). Dressings were applied in 36.36% of transferred patients. Burn surface area was accurately diagnosed in only 21.90% of total cases. In conclusion, first aid and initial management in Vietnam are still far from ideal. Further public education and continuing medical education should be applied in Vietnam.

Abstract

A particular discontinuous Galerkin finite element formulation for the simulation of Kirchhoff plates is presented. It is rotation-free and utilises standard C 0 Lagrange finite element basis functions, with the required continuity imposed in a weak sense across element boundaries. The implications of the scheme in terms of coercivity and convergence of the Galerkin problem in various norms are studied, with the formulation shown to be stable for any positive value of a penalty parameter. A priori error estimates are supported by a range of numerical examples. Properties of the approach for the important eigenvalue problems of plate buckling and vibration are also examined through numerical examples. Based on the results of the analysis and numerical examples, it is concluded that the formulation is robust, accurate and relatively simple.

Abstract

The VATLY is a new laboratory in Hanoi dedicated to research in the field of comic ray physics. Its various activities are briefly reviewed. The vertical cosmic muon flux has been measured using a segmented scintillator hodoscope and the results have been published in Ref. [1]. An orientable scintillation telescope has been constructed for measurement of the zenith angle dependence of the muon flux, of which preliminary results are reported here. They are in good agreement with the predictions of air shower model.

Abstract

The zenith angle distribution of the cosmic muon flux has been measured in Hanoi, where the geomagnetic rigidity cutoff reaches the very high value of 17 GV, using an orientable scintillator telescope. The measurement is of interest for the understanding of the development of cosmic ray showers in the earth atmosphere. The dependence of the cosmic muon flux (integrated over charges and momenta) on zenith angle θ is measured to be of the approximate form (Φ0−asin2θ)×cos2θ with Φ 0 =72.0±1.6 m −2 sr −1 s −1 and a=7.8±0.8 m −2 sr −1 s −1 . This result is consistent with an earlier Hanoi measurement and is in excellent agreement with the prediction of a model widely used in the analysis of atmospheric neutrino data.

Abstract

The vertical cosmic muon flux has been measured in Hanoi using a segmented scintillator hodoscope. It is the first measurement performed at VATLY, a cosmic ray laboratory recently created in Vietnam and installed in the premises of the Institute for Nuclear Sciences and Techniques. The measurement, performed at sea level in a region where the geomagnetic rigidity cutoff reaches 17 GV, is of interest for the understanding of the development of cosmic ray showers in the earth atmosphere. The result is compared with the prediction of a model widely used in the analysis of atmospheric neutrino data.
