We investigated the effect of montelukast on a surgically induced endometriosis rat model. Study design: Thirty-two sexually mature, cycling, female Wistar-Albino rats, in which endometriotic implants were surgically induced, were randomly divided into three groups. Group I [Montelukast (M), 10 rats)] was given 1.6 mg/kg/day of oral montelukast sodium. Group II [Leuprolide acetate (L), 11 rats] was given 1 mg/kg single dose of s.c.leuprolide acetate. Group III [Control (C), 11 rats] received saline solution through an orogastric tube and served as controls. After a 3-weeks medication, the rats were sacrificed to investigate the endometriotic implants for size and morphological and histological characteristics, including immunoreactivity of MMP-2 and VEGF. Results: The mean area of implants decreased from 48.2 +/- 24.7 to 293 +/- 15.8 mm(2) in Group I (M) (P = 0.008) and from 62 +/- 32.1 to 39.9 +/- 18.1 mm(2) in Group II(L) (P = 0.003). In Group III (C), the mean area increased from 41.1 +/- 31.1 to 60.4 +/- 37.1 mm(2) (P = 0.025). Histopathological analysis showed statistically significant lower scores in rats treated with montelukast compared to leuprolide and controls. MMP H scores were not different between the groups in both epithelial and stromal MMP-2 immunostaining. VEGF H scores were statistically lower in Group I (M) in epithelial VEGF immunostaining when compared to Group II(L) and Group III (C) (P = 0.006). Objectives Chylous ascites is the pathologic accumulation of lymphatic fluid in the peritoneal cavity. Patients who underwent surgery for gynecologic malignancy and had postoperative chylous ascites were evaluated retrospectively. Methods We reviewed 1514 patients who had staging surgery for gynecologic malignancy at our institution from January 2003 to February 2012. We analyze the patients who develop chylous ascites and who didn't. Results Twenty-four (2%) patients had postoperative chylous ascites. In the patients with chylous ascites, the median number of removed para-aortic lymph nodes was 26 (range 8–54), while this number was 17 (range 1–76) for the patients who didn't develop chylous ascites (p=0.001). Among the patients with chylous ascites, nine patients took chylous diet and 15 patients took TPN as the initial treatment. Totally seven (29%) patients required surgical correction, since 17 (71%) responded to conservative treatment . In the TPN group, the time from staging surgery to the diagnosis of chylous ascites was significantly longer in the group who required surgery compared with the group who did not (20days vs 8days, p:0.037). In addition this time wasn't statistically different from the patients' time in the diet group who didn't require surgery. Conclusion The aggressiveness of para-aortic lymphadenectomy should be individualized and the lymphatics should be controlled with suture ligation or hemoclips, since the extent and method of para-aortic lymphadenectomy has a determinative role in the development of chylous ascites. It may be logical to treat chylous ascites with diet rather than TPN initially in case the symptoms occur later.

Histomorphologic and morphometric effects of peripubertal superior ovarian nerve (SON) transection were evaluated during adult life in rats. Twenty Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into two groups: the SON-transected (SON-t) group (n = 10) and the sham-operated control group (n = 10). Total follicle development was not influenced; however, follicular maturation was seriously stunted by the procedure, as evidenced by significantly thinner theca interna and follicular wall.

To evaluate the effects of hysterectomy with ovarian conservation on ovarian histology, and FSH, inhibin A, and inhibin B plasma levels.Forty-five female Wistar albino rats were used in this study and randomly divided into two groups: hysterectomy (n=30) and sham-operated (n=15). Blood samples were collected before and after (50 and 100 days) abdominal hysterectomy from both groups to measure plasma levels of FSH, inhibin A, and inhibin B. All animals were sacrificed by decapitation to obtain ovaries for histological examination. For statistical analyses, Mann-Whitney U, Chi-square, Wilcoxon matched pairs signed rank sum tests, and two-sided variance analysis were used and statistical significance was defined as p0.05.There was no difference in hormonal variables between groups when the time interval was considered completely [p0.05 (for FSH p=0.962; for inhibin A p=0.321; for inhibin B p=0.476)]. In the hysterectomy group, the inhibin B level at postoperative day 50 was significantly lower than the control group (p=0.007) and at postoperative day 100, inhibin A concentrations were increased significantly when compared with the levels at both baseline and postoperative day 50 (p0.001). Histopathologic evaluation of ovaries 100 days after hysterectomy showed that ovaries from the hysterectomy group had significantly fewer primary (p=0.01), preantral (p0.001), and antral follicles (p0.001), and significantly more corpora lutea (p0.001), atretic (p=0.02), and cystic follicles (p=0.003).The results of this experimental rat model suggest that hysterectomy may affect ovarian function.

Hydatic cyst is an illness that appears in consequence of the cystic form of small strap-shaped worm Echinococcus granulosis. Frequently, cysts exist in the lungs and liver. Peritoneal involvement is rare, and generally occurs as a result of second inoculation from rupture of a liver-located hydatic cyst. Primary ovarian hydatic cyst is very rare. A 56-year-old female patient was admitted to Emergency Service with the complaint of stomachache and swollen abdomen. From ultrasonographic examination, a right ovarian 52 × 45-mm heterogeneous semi-solid cystic mass and right hydronephrosis were detected. As a result of the tomographic examination, the right ovarian growth was judged to be a 60 × 45-mm lobule contoured, septal, heterogeneously cystic mass (ovarian carcinoma). Depending on these indicators and with the diagnosis of ovarian carcinoma, laparotomy was planned. During the observation, a mass that compressed on the right ureter and dilatation in the right ureter were determined. The mass was approximately 6 cm long and smoothly contoured, including widespread adhesions, and also obliteration of the pouch of Douglas. The mass was excised and total abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oopherectomy performed. After a pathological examination, hydatid cyst was diagnosed. Although pointing at the issue of the distinctive diagnosis of pelvic and peritoneal mass, it should be realized that the existence of primary peritoneal and pelvic involvement of the hydatic cyst is generally a result of the second inoculation, and is also more common in regions in which Echinococcus granulosa is endemic and livestock production is prevalent.

Objective: To evaluate the impact of current and prior video game playing on initial robotic simulation skill acquisition. Material and Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study (Canadian Task Force Classification II-1) was conducted at a medical university training center. The study subjects were medical students who currently played video games (Group I) and those who had not played video games in the last 2 years (Group II). The robotic skills of both groups were assessed using simulation. Results: Twenty-two students enrolled in this study; however, only 21 completed it. The median age of the participants was 23 (22-24) years and 24 (23-26) years in Groups I and II, respectively. Among the participants, 15 (71.4%) were male and 6 (28.5%) were female, and 90.4% of the students started playing video games in primary school. When the 2 groups were compared according to the completion time of each exercise, Group I finished more quickly than Group II in the Peg Board-1 exercise (p>0.05), whereas Group II had better results in 3 exercises including Pick and Place, Ring and Rail, and Thread the Rings-1. However, none of the differences were found to be statistically significant (p>.05), and according to the overall scores based on the time to complete exercises, economy of motion, instrument collision, use of excessive instrument force, instruments out of view, and master workspace range, the scores were not statistically different between Groups I and II (p>.05). Conclusion: According to the basic robotic simulation exercise results, there was no difference between medical students who used to play video games and those who still played video games. Studies evaluating baseline visuospatial skills with larger sample sizes are needed. (J Turk Ger Gynecol Assoc 2015; 16: 1-4)
