Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are important precursors of secondary organic compounds and ozone, which raise major environmental concerns. To investigate the VOC emission characteristics, measurements of VOCs based on proton transfer reaction-mass spectrometry during 2017 were conducted in a coastal industrial area in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, China. Based on seasonal variation in species concentration, the positive matrix factorization (PMF) receptor model was applied to apportion the sources of VOCs in each season. The PMF results revealed that unknown acetonitrile source, paint solvent, electronics industry, biomass burning, secondary formation and biogenic emission were mainly attributed to VOC pollution. Biomass burning and secondary formation were the major sources of VOCs and contributed more than 70% of VOC emissions in spring and autumn. Industry-related sources contributed 8.65%-31.2% of the VOCs throughout the year. The unknown acetonitrile source occurred in winter and spring, and contributed 7.6%-43.73% of the VOC emissions in the two seasons. Conditional probability function (CPF) analysis illustrated that the industry sources came from local emission, while biomass burning and biogenic emission mainly came from the northwest direction. The potential source contribution function (PSCF) model showed that secondary formation-related source was mainly from Jiangsu Province, northeastern China and the surrounding ocean. The potential source areas of unknown acetonitrile source were northern Zhejiang Province, southern Jiangsu Province and the northeastern coastal marine environments.

The Yellow River Basin (YRB) plays a very important role in China's economic and social development and ecological security. In particular, the ecosystem of the YRB is sensitive to climate change. However, the change of nutrient fluxes in this region during the past years and its main driving forces remain unclear. In this study, a hydrologic model R System for Spatially Referenced Regressions on Watershed Attributes (RSPARROW) was employed to simulate the spatio-temporal variations in the fluxes of total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) during the period of 2006-2017. The results suggested that the TN and TP loads increased by 138% and 38% during 2006-2014, respectively, and decreased by 66% and 71% from 2015 to 2017, respectively. During the period of 2006-2017, the annual mean fluxes of TN and TP in the YRB were in the range of 3.9 to 591.6 kg/km

Chiral pesticides account for 30% of pesticides. Pesticides are inevitably leached into the groundwater by runoff. At the watershed level, the distribution characteristics of enantiomers in sediments collected from the river network of an agricultural area near the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River were tested, and their potential correlations with the physicochemical properties and microbial communities of the sediments were analyzed. The sediment pollution was serious at sites 8 and 9, with their pollution source possibly being agricultural or industrial sewage. Moreover, there were higher cumulative contents of pesticide residues at sites 4, 8, and 9. Specifically, Cycloxaprid was the most detected chiral pesticide in the study area, followed by Dinotefuran and Diclofop-methyl. Additionally, Ethiprole and Difenoconazole had strong enantioselectivity in the study area. Interestingly, the enantiomers of some chiral pesticides, such as Tebuconazole, had completely different distributions at different sites. Pearson correlation analysis showed that sediment catalase and microbial biomass carbon were important factors for enantioselectivity of chiral pesticides. The effect of sediment physicochemical properties on enantioselective distribution was achieved by influencing the microorganisms in the sediment. Furthermore, the enantioselective distribution of Tebuconazole was closely related to the genus Arenimonas. Overall, the enantioselective distribution of most of the chiral pesticides was positively correlated with the prokaryotic microbial community. This study provides empirical support for agricultural non-point source pollution caused by chiral pesticides, and also lays a research foundation for exploring the factors that affect the fate of chiral pesticides in the environment.

This is the first report to discover Clostridiodes difficile (C. difficile) ribotype RT126 and RT598 (both ribotypes belong to RT078-lineage) in a river water system in southern Taiwan. Fluoroquinolone resistance was also found. The connection between clinical isolates and those from the environment needs further investigation.

Manganese (Mn) ores contain substantial concentrations of mercury (Hg), and mining and smelting of Mn ores can bring Hg into the surrounding aquatic environment through atmospheric deposition, leaching of electrolytic Mn residue and Mn gangue dump. However, limited is known that how these processes influence the environmental behaviors of Hg in waterbody. Therefore, the seasonal distribution and existing form of Hg in water and sediment in one Mn ore area in Xiushan County, Chongqing were investigated. Our results showed that the mean Hg and methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in water (n=35) were 5.8 ± 4.6 ng/L and 0.22 ± 0.14 ng/L, respectively. The mean Hg concentrations in retained riverbed and fluvial bank sediment (n=35) were 0.74 ± 0.26 mg/kg and 0.63 ± 0.27 mg/kg, respectively (the mean MeHg concentrations were 0.64 ± 0.40 µg/kg and 0.51 ± 0.30 µg/kg, respectively). It indicated that the mining and smelting of Mn ores were the main sources of anthropogenic Hg, and Mn may inhibit Hg methylation in rivers in Mn ore areas. Mercury in the bound to iron/ Mn (Fe/Mn) oxides of low crystallinity fraction (Hg-OX) accounted for 4.01% and 5.25% of the total Hg concentrations in the retained riverbed and fluvial bank sediment, respectively. The amount of Hg bound to Fe/Mn oxides in sediment increased significantly due to the manganese mining activities in the investigated area. Therefore, it could be hypothesized that high Hg concentrations in river sediment in Mn mining areas are closely related to high Mn concentration in sediment.

This study aimed to (1) monitor the occurrence and spatiotemporal variations of 100 pesticides in sediments collected monthly from July 2018 to June 2019 from sampling sites in El-Rahawy, Sabal, and Tala, along the Rosetta branch of the Nile River, Egypt, and (2) perform an ecological risk assessment for aquatic organisms upon exposure to the detected sediment pesticides based on the risk quotient (RQ) method. Out of the 100 pesticides monitored, 16 pesticides belonging to seven chemical families were detected, and 55% of the sediment samples were contaminated with one or more pesticide residues. The mean concentration (mg/kg dry weight (dw)) and detection frequency (%) of the four most frequently detected pesticides in the sediment samples were as follows: chlorpyrifos (0.18 mg/kg dw and 34%), p,p'-DDE (0.018 mg/kg dw and 30%), cypermethrin (0.03 mg/kg dw and 14%), and deltamethrin (0.026 mg/kg dw and 13%). The spatial distribution exhibited that El-Rahawy had the highest pesticide load (2.86 mg/kg dw) among the studied sites, whereas the temporal variations revealed that the highest total pesticide concentrations were detected in winter season (1.73 mg/kg dw). Meanwhile, 12 pesticides showed high RQs (1), posing a potential ecological risk to aquatic species that live and feed on such sediments.

Previously, I (Boesch 2017) described a notion called "representational licensing"-the set of activities of scientific practice by which scientists establish the intended representational use of a vehicle. In this essay, I expand and develop this concept of representational licensing. I begin by showing how the concept is of value for both pragmatic and substantive approaches to scientific representation. Then, through the examination of a case study of the Mississippi River Basin Model, I point out and explain some of the activities of representational licensing that help to establish the representational nature of this model. Throughout the exploration of the case study, I pause to identify some important lessons which apply more generally about the nature of representational licensing in science.

The conventional Ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF), which is now widely used to calibrate emission inventories and to improve air quality simulations, is susceptible to simulation errors of meteorological inputs, making accurate updates of high temporal-resolution emission inventories challenging. In this study, we developed a novel meteorologically adjusted inversion method (MAEInv) based on the EnKF to improve daily emission estimations. The new method combines sensitivity analysis and bias correction to alleviate the inversion biases caused by errors of meteorological inputs. For demonstration, we used the MAEInv to inverse daily carbon monoxide (CO) emissions in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region, China. In the case study, 60% of the total CO simulation biases were associated with sensitive meteorological inputs, which would lead to the overestimation of daily variations of posterior emissions. Using the new inversion method, daily variations of emissions shrank dramatically, with the percentage change decreased by 30%. Also, the total amount of posterior CO emissions estimated by the MAEInv decreased by 14%, indicating that posterior CO emissions might be overestimated using the conventional EnKF. Model evaluations using independent observations revealed that daily CO emissions estimated by MAEInv better reproduce the magnitude and temporal patterns of ambient CO concentration, with a higher correlation coefficient (R, +37.0%) and lower normalized mean bias (NMB, -17.9%). Since errors of meteorological inputs are major sources of simulation biases for both low-reactive and reactive pollutants, the MAEInv is also applicable to improve the daily emission inversions of reactive pollutants.

Reconstruction of natural streamflow is fundamental to the sustainable management of water resources. In China, previous reconstructions from sparse and poor-quality gauge measurements have led to large biases in simulation of the interannual and seasonal variability of natural flows. Here we use a well-trained and tested land surface model coupled to a routing model with flow direction correction to reconstruct the first high-quality gauge-based natural streamflow dataset for China, covering all its 330 catchments during the period from 1961 to 2018. A stronger positive linear relationship holds between upstream routing cells and drainage areas, after flow direction correction to 330 catchments. We also introduce a parameter-uncertainty analysis framework including sensitivity analysis, optimization, and regionalization, which further minimizes biases between modeled and inferred natural streamflow from natural or near-natural gauges. The resulting behavior of the natural hydrological system is represented properly by the model which achieves high skill metric values of the monthly streamflow, with about 83% of the 330 catchments having Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency coefficient (NSE) > 0.7, and about 56% of the 330 catchments having Kling-Gupta efficiency coefficient (KGE) > 0.7. The proposed construction scheme has important implications for similar simulation studies in other regions, and the developed low bias long-term national datasets by statistical postprocessing should be useful in supporting river management activities in China.

The rapid construction of artificial reservoirs in metropolises has promoted the emergence of city-river-reservoir systems worldwide. This study investigated the environmental behaviors and risks of heavy metals in the aquatic environment of a typical system composed of main watersheds in Suzhou and Jinze Reservoir in Shanghai. Results shown that Mn, Zn and Cu were the dominant metals detected in multiple phases. Cd, Mn and Zn were mainly presented in exchangeable fraction and exhibited high bioavailability. Great proportion and high mobility of metals were found in suspended particulate matter (SPM), suggesting that SPM can greatly affect metal multi-phase distribution process. Spatially, city system (CiS) exhibited more serious metal pollution and higher ecological risk than river system (RiS) and reservoir system (ReS) owing to the diverse emission sources. CiS and ReS were regarded as critical pollution source and sink, respectively, while RiS was a vital transportation aisle. Microbial community in sediments exhibited evident spatial variation and obviously modified by exchangeable metals and nutrients. In particular, Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes presented significant positive correlations with most exchangeable metals. Risk assessment implied that As, Sb and Ni in water may pose potential carcinogenic risk to human health. Nevertheless, ReS was in a fairly safe state. Hg was the main risk contributor in SPM, while Cu, Zn, Ni and Sb showed moderate risk in sediments. Overall, Hg, Sb and CiS were screened out as priority metals and system, respectively. More attention should be paid to these priority issues to promote the sustainable development of the watershed.

Foodborne diseases are a neglected research area, and despite the existence of many tools for diagnosis and genetic studies, very little is known about the effect of the landscape on the genetic diversity and presence of parasites. One of these foodborne disease is paragonimiasis, caused by trematodes of the genus Paragonimus, which is responsible for a high number of infections in humans and wild animals. The main Paragonimus sp reported in Mesoamerica is Paragonimus mexicanus, yet there are doubts about its correct identification as a unique species throughout the region. This, together with a lack of detailed knowledge about their ecology, evolution and differentiation, may complicate the implementation of control strategies across the Mesoamerican region. We had the goal of delimiting the species of P. mexicanus found throughout Mesoamerica and determining the effect of landscape and geology on the diversity and presence of the parasite. We found support for the delimitation of five genetic groups. The genetic differentiation among these groups was positively affected by elevation and the isolation of river basins, while the parasite's presence was affected negatively only by the presence of human settlements. These results suggest that areas with lower elevation, connected rivers basins, and an absence of human settlements have low genetic differentiation and high P. mexicanus presence, which may increase the risk of Paragonimus infection. These demonstrate the importance of accurate species delimitation and consideration of the effect of landscape on Paragonimus in the proposal of adequate control strategies. However, other landscape variables cannot be discarded, including temperature, rainfall regime, and spatial scale (local, landscape and regional). These additional variables were not explored here, and should be considered in future studies.

Comprehension of the spatial and temporal characteristics of non-point source (NPS) pollution risk in watersheds is essential for NPS pollution research and scientific management. Although the concept of water functional zones (WFZ) has been considered in the NPS pollution risk assessment process. However, no comprehensive study of the NPS pollution risk has been conducted to effectively protect water quality in watersheds with different water environment capacity. Therefore, this study proposes a new NPS pollution risk assessment method that integrates water functional zoning, receiving water body environmental capacity, and space-time distribution of pollution load for quantifying the impact of pollution discharge from sub-catchment on nearby water body quality. Based on the NPS nutrient loss process modeled by the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT), this method was used to assess the NPS pollution risk in the Le 'an River Watershed at annual and monthly scales. The results showed that the NPS pollution risk is characterized by seasonal and spatial variability and is influenced clearly by the water environment capacity. High NPS pollution loads are not necessarily high pollution risks. Conversely, a low NPS nutrient pollution load does not represent a low regional risk sensitivity. In addition, NPS risk assessment based on the water environment capacity could also distinguish the differences in risk levels that were masked by similar NPS pollutant loss and the same water function zoning to achieve accurate control of NPS pollution management in watersheds.

Jiaxing created a precedent using bypass riparian marshes to purify micro-polluted water sources in China. Pond-wetland complex with constructed root channel technology becomes a paradigm which can be analogized as “human-body wetland model” based on bionics or biomimetics. Heterogeneous plant-bed/ditch system with highly active land/water ecotone interfaces, especially meandering boundaries, breeds many biochemical reactions “living areas”. Optimization of hydraulic regulation promotes redox environment alternations and wetland treatment efficiency. Here we reported a series of upgrades and performances in Guanjinggang wetland after the Shijiuyang prototype. Morphological reform of plant-bed/ditch system played a vital role. Spatially root channel zone was main force of wetland purification, and temporally the treatment effect was higher in low-temperature seasons indicating non-temperature dependent mechanisms worked. Water pollution comprehensive index improved steadily from IV to III, and comprehensive pollution load was reduced by ca. 40%–60%. Comprehensive evaluation function value further showed the gradients purification effect of the upgraded wetland. Ecological wetlands ameliorated source water quality, and reduced drinking water treatment reagents, thereby bringing about economic benefits. Through wetlands operation, people can see how the micro-polluted surface water becomes clear and clean, so promoting a significant social benefit. As a viable component of urban green space, wetlands could beautify regional eco-environment, freshen the air, increase urban ecological taste, and enhance the eco-environmental protection publicity. Thus, the multifunctional service values and indirect benefits are substantial. Jiaxing ecological wetlands provide a typical paradigm for water pollution remediation in developing countries and plays a leading role in technology engineering radiation effect.

Nitrofurantoin (NFT) is mainly used in humans for the treatment of urinary tract infections. NFT is used as feed additives in animals, due to its broad antimicrobial activity. However, it shows more side effects on human health and the environment. Therefore low-cost, portable, and rapid sensors are necessary for the detection of NFT in real samples. Herein, we successfully developed an electrochemical sensor using a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified with gadolinium orthoferrite (GdFeO3) decorated on reduced graphene oxide (RGO) nanocomposite for the detection of NFT. The facile hydrothermal method was used to synthesis a novel GdFeO3/RGO nanocomposite, the morphological and structural characterization was confirmed by the FESEM, HRTEM, EDX, XRD, Raman, and XPS techniques. The formation mechanism of GdFeO3/RGO nanocomposite had been discussed. The effective intercalation of the nanostructured GdFeO3 to the RGO sheets leads to the significant enhancement in physicochemical properties such as electrical conductivity, electro-active surface area, structural stability, and electrochemical activity, which was observed from the EIS and CV experimental results. The electrochemical studies established that the developed GdFeO3/RGO sensor was highly sensitive and selective to NFT. Moreover, the GdFeO3/RGO sensor exhibits good sensitivity of 4.1985 μA μM−1 cm−2, a low detection limit (LOD) of 0.0153 µM and a linear range from 0.001 to 249 µM for NFT detection under optimized experimental conditions. In addition, the investigation of storage time on the CV response of the GdFeO3/RGO sensor indicates superior stability. Owing to these extraordinary analytical advantages, the as-fabricated sensor was applied to detect the NFT levels in human urine and river water samples with satisfactory results.

Land transportation in the Yangtze River basin is an important source of microplastics in the East China Sea, so it is significant to clarify the source, fate and river-sea transition of microplastics. Taking the Yangtze River as the study area, the interpolation method was used to analyze the monthly changes of the microplastic load in the estuary, the input-output model was used to estimate the flux of microplastics into the sea, and the inflow process of microplastics was studied through correlation analysis. The results showed that: (1) The load of microplastics in the Yangtze River estuary varied with season, reaching the maximum in October, with a monthly load of 3.91 Gg; (2) The total amount of microplastics entering the sea in the Yangtze River basin was higher than the medium level, which was 7.02 Gg. Among them, tributary input was the most important source, accounting for 62.9%. Non-point and point sources were further subdivided into 11 categories, with the largest proportion of microplastics generated during vehicle trip. Spatially speaking, the microplastics transported in the midstream accounted for the largest proportion, accounting for 55.56%; (3) microplastics had a strong correlation with COD and TP, indicating that the inflow process of microplastics was similar to that of traditional pollutants, which were river retention, wastewater treatment plant removal, water consumption removal and inflow to the East China Sea. Although the proportion of the last one was only 8.05%, the ecological risk was still not negligible due to the huge amount.

In this paper, we describe poisoning outbreaks of Xanthium strumarium in cattle on the borders of the Araguari River, Southeastern Brazil. In this region, several hydroelectric plants promote transient flooding, which creates a favorable environment for the invasion of X. strumarium in extensive areas, often as the predominant species in those areas. The outbreaks occurred between July and September (dry season). Bovines of all ages were affected, including suckling animals. Mortality varied from 2% to 5.5%. The animals exhibited ataxia, weakness, loss of balance, recumbency, and the majority were found dead. Laboratory results showed a marked increase in the serum activities of alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, and gamma-glutamyltransferase. Histological and ultrastructural changes in the liver consisted of centrilobular necrosis and hemorrhage. On toxicological evaluation, the dicotyledons contained 0.30 μg/mg of atractyloside and 0.37 μg/mg of carboxyatractyloside. Considerable economic loss has occurred in this region due to the lack of knowledge regarding X. strumarium as a toxic plant and its adaptation to the environmental and climatic conditions of the region, which have made the condition endemic.

Flood conditions present dangers for canoe camping, with the highest risk for injury or death related to water submersion of paddlers. Other hazards can exist at high water stages as well. This essay discusses preparation for risks associated with canoe travel during record flood conditions in Alabama's Mobile-Tensaw River Delta. It examines the unique aspects of paddling through submerged forests, route detours necessitated by flooding, potential encounters with dangerous wildlife, and the case of a stinging ant attack on a paddler who unexpectedly comes in contact with a displaced ant colony.

Pterocarya stenoptera is a tree species that occurs along rivers and has high tolerance to waterlogging. Identification of waterlogging response genes in the aboveground part of P. stenoptera will increase understanding of tolerance mechanisms under root waterlogging conditions. In this study, we employed four physiological indicators and comparative transcriptome sequencing to investigate the waterlogging tolerance mechanism in P. stenoptera. The physiological results showed that the aboveground part of P. stenoptera was not obviously affected by waterlogging. P. stenoptera enhanced waterlogging tolerance by increasing the synthesis of alpha-Linolenic acids and flavonoids and activating the jasmonic acid, ethylene, and auxin signaling pathways. Our results confirmed our hypothesis that P. stenoptera, a species that is widely distributed along rivers, has evolved a range of mechanisms in response to waterlogging. Our research will provide new insights for understanding the tolerance mechanism of species to waterlogging.

Mismanaged plastic waste (MPW) entering the riverine environment is concerning, given that most plastic pollution never reaches the oceans, and it has a severe negative impact on terrestrial ecosystems. However, significant knowledge gaps on the storage and remobilization of MPW within different rivers over varying timescales remain. Here we analyze the exposure of river systems to MPW to better understand the sedimentary processes that control the legacy of plastic waste. Using a conservative approach, we estimate 0.8 million tonnes of MPW enter rivers annually in 2015, affecting an estimated 84% of rivers by surface area, globally. By 2060, the amount of MPW input to rivers is expected to increase nearly 3-fold, however improved plastic waste strategies through better governance can decrease plastic pollution by up to 72%. Currently, most plastic input occurs along anthropogenically modified rivers (49%) yet these represent only 23% of rivers by surface area. Another 17% of MPW occur in free-flowing actively migrating meandering rivers that likely retain most plastic waste within sedimentary deposits, increasing retention times and likelihood of biochemical weathering. Active braided rivers receive less MPW (14%), but higher water discharge will also increase fragmentation to form microplastics. Only 20% of plastic pollution is found in non-migrating and free-flowing rivers; these have the highest probability of plastics remaining within the water column and being transferred downstream. This study demonstrates the spatial variability in MPW affecting different global river systems with different retention, fragmentation, and biochemical weathering rates of plastics. Targeted mitigation strategies and environmental risk assessments are needed at both international and national levels that consider river system dynamics.

Numerous studies have evaluated the toxicity and endocrine disrupting properties of organic UV filters for aquatic organisms, but little is known about their biodegradation in river sediments and their impact on microorganisms. We have set up the sterile and microbiological systems in the laboratory, adding 2-ethylhexyl-4-methoxycinnamate (EHMC), one of organic UV filters included in the list of high yield chemicals, at concentrations of 2, 20 and 200 μg/L, and characterized the microbial community composition and diversity in sediments. Monitoring of EHMC degradation within 30 days revealed that the half-life in the microbial system (3.49 days) was much shorter than that in the sterile system (7.55 days). Two potential degradation products, 4-mercaptobenzoic acid and 3-methoxyphenol were identified in the microbial system. Furthermore, high-throughput 16s and 18s rRNA gene sequencing showed that Proteobacteria dominated the sediment bacterial assemblages followed by Chloroflexi, Acidobacteria, Bacteroidetes and Nitrospirae; Eukaryota_uncultured fungus dominated the sediment fungal assemblages. Correlation analysis demonstrated that two bacterium genera (Anaerolineaceae_uncultured and Burkholderiaceae_uncultured) were significantly correlated with the biodegradation of EHMC. These results illustrate the biodegradability of EHMC in river sediments and its potential impact on microbial communities, which can provide useful information for eliminating the pollution of organic UV filters in natural river systems and assessing their potential ecological risks.

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) as emergence contaminations have spread widely in the water environment. Wild fish may be recipients and communicators of ARGs in the water environment, however, the distribution and transmission of ARGs in the wild fish and relevant water environment were rarely reported. Here, we have profiled ARGs and bacterial communities in wild freshwater fish and relevant water in a peri-urban river using high-throughput qPCR and 16S rRNA gene sequence. A total of 80 and 220 unique ARG subtypes were identified in fish and water samples. Fish and water both showed significant ARG seasonal variations (P0.05). To control the spread of COVID-19, rigorous restrictions have been implemented in China, resulting in a great reduction in pollutant emissions. In this study, we evaluated the air quality in the Yangtze River Delta during the COVID-19 lockdown period using satellite and ground-based data, including particle matter (PM), trace gases, water-soluble ions (WSIs) and black carbon (BC). We found that the impacts of lockdown policy on air quality cannot be accurately assessed using MODIS aerosol optical depth (AOD) data, whereas the tropospheric nitrogen dioxide (NO2) vertical column density can well reflect the influences of these restrictions on human activities. Compared to the pre-COVID period, the PM2.5, PM10, NO2, carbon monoxide (CO), BC and WSIs during the lockdown in Suzhou were observed to decrease by 37.2%, 38.3%, 64.5%, 26.1%, 53.3% and 58.6%, respectively, while the sulfur dioxide (SO2) and ozone (O3) increased by 1.5% and 104.7%. The WSIs ranked in the order of NO3− > NH4+ > SO42- > Cl− > Ca2+ > K+ > Mg2+ > Na+ during the lockdown period. By comparisons with the ion concentrations during the pre-COVID period, we found that the ions NO3−, NH4+, SO42−, Cl−, Ca2+, K+ and Na+ decreased by 66.3%, 48.8%, 52.9%, 56.9%, 57.9% and 76.3%, respectively, during the lockdown, in contrast to Mg2+, which increased by 30.2%. IRET The LIFE Index can be useful to determine the effect of changes in river flow on the community of aquatic macroinvertebrates and as a tool for the implementation of environmental flows. This study demonstrates how to classify aquatic macroinvertebrates into a flow category in order to adjust the LIFE Index to Costa Rica. A panel of experts was surveyed to classify the most common genera into a water velocity category, based on their experience. Also, for one-year, aquatic macroinvertebrates were collected in the low and middle basin of the Naranjo River under different velocities, and by using the TITAN2 package, their respective thresholds for current velocity were determined. Variation was observed in the responses of the expert panel; however, several taxa overlapped by more than 60% between the expert classification and the TITAN2 test results. The TITAN2 test assigned a velocity threshold to 32 genera, with the inflection point being 0.1 m/s. The expert panel served as a tool to assign a category to those genera that the TITAN2 test did not contemplate. Organisms without morphological adaptations to survive fast flowing conditions decreased in frequency above 0.1 m/s, while genera related to moderate and high velocities increased in frequency. Through the panel of experts and the TITAN2 test, it was possible to assign the most common genera in the country to a current velocity category and therefore adjust the LIFE index. El Índice LIFE puede ser útil para determinar el efecto de los cambios en el caudal de los ríos en la comunidad de macroinvertebrados acuáticos y como herramienta para la implementación de caudales ambientales. Este estudio demuestra cómo clasificar a los macroinvertebrados acuáticos en una categoría de flujo para ajustar el Índice LIFE a Costa Rica. Se encuestó a un panel de expertos para clasificar los géneros más comunes en una categoría de velocidad del agua, según su experiencia. Asimismo, durante un año, se recolectaron macroinvertebrados acuáticos en la cuenca baja y media del río Naranjo a diferentes velocidades, y mediante el uso del paquete TITAN2 se determinaron sus respectivos umbrales de velocidad de corriente. Se observó variación en las respuestas del panel de expertos; sin embargo, varios taxones se superpusieron en más del 60% entre la clasificación de expertos y los resultados de la prueba TITAN2. La prueba TITAN2 asignó un umbral de velocidad a 32 géneros, con un punto de inflexión de 0,1 m / s. El panel de expertos sirvió como herramienta para asignar una categoría a aquellos géneros que la prueba TITAN2 no contemplaba. The water quality of Le 'an River Watershed (LRW) is crucial to the water environmental safety of Poyang Lake, especially the concentration of nitrogen and phosphorus. The effect of climate and land use change on watershed water quality has always been under the attention of local managers. More importantly, the lack of detailed studies on climate and land use impact on river water quality has prevented sustainable water security management in the LRW. Therefore, this study aimed to quantify the weight of climate and land use on nutrient loss in the LRW, respectively. We divided the historical period (1990-2020) into six scenarios and a baseline scenario. TN and TP losses in the watershed were simulated using Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT), and the weight of climate and land use were quantified in overall, by period, and by region. The results showed that the weight of climate was greatly higher than land use with values around 90%. However, the weight of land use had a positive cumulative effect in a certain period, and its influence could not be neglected. The climate in all scenarios led to a reduction in nutrient loss, while land use was found to slightly increase the nutrient loss yield. In addition to, unique regional topographic features, urbanization rates, and climatic conditions could cause spatial heterogeneity in the climatic and land use weights.

The Paraiba do Sul (PSR) and Guandu Rivers (GR) water diversion system (120 km long) is located in the main industrial pole of Brazil and supplies drinking water for 9.4 million people in the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro. This study aims to discern the trace metals dynamics in this complex aquatic system. We used a combined approach of geochemical tools such as geochemical partitioning, Zn isotopes signatures, and multivariate statistics. Zinc and Pb concentrations in Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) and sediments were considerably higher in some sites. The sediment partition of As, Cr, and Cu revealed the residual fraction (F4) as the main fraction for these elements, indicating low mobility. Zinc and Pb were mostly associated with the exchangeable/carbonate (F1) and the reducible (F2) fractions, respectively, implying a higher susceptibility of these elements to being released from sediments. Zinc isotopic compositions of sediments and SPM fell in a binary mixing source process between lithogenic (δ66/64ZnJMC ≈ + 0.30‰) and anthropogenic (δ66/64ZnJMC ≈ + 0.15‰) end members. The lighter δ66/64ZnJMC values accompanied by high Zn concentrations in exchangeable/carbonate fraction (ZnF1) enable the tracking of Zn anthropogenic sources in the studied rivers. Overall, the results indicated that Hg, Pb, and Zn had a dominant anthropogenic origin linked to the industrial activities, while As, Cr, and Cu were mainly associated with lithogenic sources. This work demonstrates how integrating geochemical tools is valuable for assessing geochemical processes and mixing source effects in anthropized river watersheds.

Organic and inorganic materials migrate downstream and have important roles in regulating environmental health in the river networks. However, it remains unclear whether and how a mixture of materials (i.e., microbial species) from various upstream habitats contribute to microbial community coalescence upstream of a dam. Here we track the spatial variation in microbial abundance and diversity in the Three Gorges Reservoir based on quantitative PCR and 16S rRNA gene high-throughput sequencing data. We further quantitatively assess the relative contributions of microbial species from mainstem, its tributaries, and the surrounding riverbank soils to the area immediately upstream of the Three Gorges Dam (TGD). We found an increase of microbial diversity and the convergent microbial distribution pattern in areas immediately upstream of TGD, suggesting this area become a new confluence for microbial diversity immigrating from upstream. Indeed, the number of shared species increased from upstream to TGD but unique species decreased, indicating immigration of various sources of microbial species overwhelms local environmental conditions in structuring microbial community close to TGD. By quantifying the sources of microbial species close to TGD, we found little contribution from soils as compared to tributaries, especially for sites closer to TGD, suggesting tributary microbes have greater influence on microbial diversity and environmental health in the Three Gorges Reservoir. Collectively, our results suggest that tracking microbial geographic origin and evaluating accumulating effects of microbial diversity shed light on the ecological processes in microbial communities and provide information for regulating aquatic ecological health.

The NPN compounds from dairy processing side-streams are a promising source for new products. In this study, the NPN profile of lactose production samples was screened using GC–MS and 1H NMR spectroscopy. These analytical platforms allowed the identification of 35 NPN compounds including, amino acids and derivatives, amino alcohols, organic acids, and other classes. Quantification of the NPN compounds revealed their attenuation by unit operations during a trial lactose production. Urea, ammonia, glycerophosphocholine, creatine, creatinine, orotic acid and choline were the most dominant compounds. Mother liquor concentrate had the highest concentration of NPN, whereas lactose powder had substantial relative amounts of N-acetylglucosamine, phosphocholine and orotic acid. The NPN compounds added up to 57–99% of the total nitrogen, depending on the sample type. The highest nitrogen recovery was found for the reverse osmosis retentate, mother liquid concentrate, wash water and reverse osmosis permeate, whereas the lowest was found for lactose powder.

The Western Cape in South Africa has a Mediterranean climate, which has in part led to an abundance of agriculturally productive land supporting the wheat, deciduous fruit, wine, and citrus industries. South Africa is the leading pesticide user in Sub-Saharan Africa. There is limited data on the pesticide pollution of surface water over different seasons in low- and middle-income countries. We evaluated the seasonal drivers of aquatic pesticide pollution in three river catchments (Berg, Krom, and Hex Rivers) from July 2017 to June 2018 and April to July 2019, using 48 passive samplers. Our sampling followed the most severe drought (2015-2018) since recordings in 1960. Thus, our analyses focus on how drought and post-drought conditions may affect in-stream pesticide concentrations and loads. Samples were analyzed for 101 pesticide compounds using liquid chromatography - high-resolution mass spectrometry. Environmental Quality Standards (EQS) were used to assess the risks. We detected 60 pesticide compounds across the sampling periods. Our results indicate that all samples across all three catchments contained at least three pesticides and that the majority (83%) contained five or more pesticides. Approximately half the number of pesticides were detected after the drought in 2018. High concentration sums of pesticides (1 μg/L) were detected over long time periods in the Hex River Valley (22 weeks) and in Piketberg (four weeks). Terbuthylazine, imidacloprid, and metsulfuron-methyl were detected in the highest concentrations, making up most of the detected mass, and were frequently above EQS. The occurrence of some pesticides in water generally correlated with their application and rainfall events. However, those of imidacloprid and terbuthylazine did not, suggesting that non-rainfall-driven transport processes are important drivers of aquatic pesticide pollution. The implementation of specific, scientifically sound, mitigation measures against aquatic pesticide pollution would require comprehensive pesticide application data as well as a targeted study identifying sources and transport processes for environmentally persistent pesticides.

This work primarily emphases on evaluating the prevalence of organic micropollutants (OMPs) in the perennial Yamuna River (YR) that flow through the national capital of India, Delhi. Sixteen sampling campaigns (non-monsoon, n = 9; monsoon n = 7) were organized to understand the seasonal variations with special emphasis on monsoon. We have found fifty-five OMPs in the monsoon; while forty-seven were detected in non-monsoon. Fifty-seven screened and quantified OMPs in the most polluted stretch of River Yamuna included the pharmaceutically active compounds, pesticides, endocrine-disrupting chemicals, phthalates, personal care products, fatty acids, food additives, hormones, and trace organics present in hospital wastes. During monsoon months, compounds for which concentrations exceeded 50 μg/L were: adenine (64.6 μg/L), diethyl phthalate (62.9 μg/L), and octamethyltrisiloxane (56.9 μg/L); and the same for non-monsoon months was only for 1-dodecanethiol (52.3 μg/L). The average concentration of OMPs in non-monsoon months indicate PhACsPCPsPesticidesFatty acidsHospital wasteHormonesPesticidesEDCs. In monsoon months due to surface runoff and high volume of untreated wastewater discharges few more OMPs concentrations were detected which mainly includes PhACs (clofibric acid, diclofenac sodium, gemfibrozil, ketoprofen), pesticides (aldrin, metribuzin, atrazine, simazine). Due to dilution effect in the monsoon months, average concentrations of 3-acetamido-5-bromobenzoic acid (PhACs) was reduced from 45.22 μg/L to 14.07 μg/L, whereas some EDCs such as 2,4- Di-tert-amylphenol, 3,5- di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxybenzyl alcohol, Triphenylphosphine oxide, Benzophenone were found in much higher concentrations in the monsoon months. Octamethyltrisiloxane (PCPs) was detected 50 times higher in concentration in the monsoon months. Interestingly, the concentration of about 50 % of the OMPs was more in the monsoon samples than in non-monsoon samples which is contrary to the general understanding that monsoon-induced dilution lowers the concentrations of OMPs. In RY water higher magnitude of diclofenac sodium, ibuprofen, ketoprofen, and clofibric acid was found than Europe and North America rivers. Hormones such as estriol and estrone in RY water are found 70 to 100 times higher than the maximum reported concentrations in the US streams. Finally, various OMPs responded differently to the monsoon season as evident from multivariate analyses.

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are commonly seen emerging organic contaminants in aquatic environments. The transects for the occurrence and distribution of 24 PPCPs along the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River (Henan section) were investigated in this study. All 24 targeted compounds were detected in surface water, with concentrations in the range from not detected (ND) to 527.4 ng/L. Among these PPCPs, caffeine is found to have the highest concentration and its detection frequency is 100%. The total PPCP concentration ranged from 136 ng/L to 916 ng/L (median, 319.5 ng/L). Spatial analysis showed that the pollution level of PPCPs in the trunk stream was lower than that in most tributaries in the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River (Henan section). The ecotoxicological risk assessment indicated that norfloxacin, azithromycin, estrone, and triclosan posed high risks to aquatic organisms (RQ1), roxithromycin and oxytetracycline imposed moderate risks (0.1 ≤ RQ1), and the tributary Jindi River had the highest mixed risk (MRQ = 222).

Understanding how ecosystem services (ESs) interact with urbanization is crucial for formulating sustainable development policies. Although previous literature has paid attention to this topic, information on complex spatiotemporal interactions between ESs and urbanization remains inadequate, especially in the Yellow River Basin (YRB), a typical basin that will usher in rapid progress of ecological protection and urbanization. In this study, we constructed a framework for evaluating ecosystem service values (ESV) and urbanization by synthesizing multi-source data in the YRB from 1980 to 2018, and further revealing the interactive coercing mechanisms of ESV and urbanization. We found that the YRB has experienced rapid urbanization, with an increasing growth trend for all urbanization indicators, especially from 2000 onwards. ESV had a significant negative correlation with urbanization, showing a decreasing trend with urbanization growth before 2000, but reversed this trend after 2000 as ecological restoration projects offset the adverse effects of urbanization on ESV. Furthermore, while significant negative spatial correlations occurred between ESV and urbanization, these correlations diminished over time. The results also revealed differences in the spatial correlations between global and local scales, with three types of spatial correlations at the local scale: High-Low (high ESV and low urbanization), Low-High (low ESV and high urbanization), and Low-Low (low ESV and low urbanization). Our results contribute to understanding the interactive coercing relationship between ESV and urbanization in the YRB, particularly at the local scale, and insights into coordinating future ecological protection and urban development.

Community coalescence, i.e., the mixing and merging of microbial communities and their surrounding environments, is prevalent in various ecosystems and potentially acts on ecological processes. River bends are distinguished by significant cross-stream velocities and spiral flow. The flow in river bends causes the mixing of microbial communities, thus making the resultant community (after mixing) different from its precursors (before mixing) through ecological processes. However, so far, no studies have explored the effect of community coalescence on ecological processes and network stability under the hydrodynamic processes of river bends. Here, we explored bacterial community assembly and community coalescence in river bends by coupling hydrodynamic profiling, aqueous biogeochemistry, DNA sequencing, and ecological theory. The results showed that the water flow dominated the community coalescence by regulating the movement of suspended sediments. The main ecological process determining the bacterial community compositions in water was the dispersal process, whereas in sediments it was the selection process. Furthermore, the negative cohesion results showed that community coalescence determined the stability of bacterial networks through competition and predation. This study depicted the bacterial community coalescence in river bends and highlighted their associations with network stability, which might provide new insights into bacterial community assembly and coalescence under complex hydrodynamics in the aquatic environment.

Afforestation has been implemented widely to enhance carbon sequestration and benefit the ecological environment of many global drylands. However, the potential and available afforestation space in drylands is uncertain due to the conflicts between additional forest areas and available water. How afforestation will affect the potential for forest carbon stock is also unclear. This paper assessed the future spatial distribution of afforestation and potential forest carbon stock in a typical dryland region, the Yellow River Basin (YRB), which has experienced rapid afforestation and high human activity pressure over the past several decades. Combining the future land use change model (FLUS) and local important development planning, we simulated future afforestation distributions and estimated potential forest carbon stock under the ecological restoration, urban expansion, and cultivated land protection scenarios. The afforestation carbon stock was predicted by considering the dynamic change trends of the mature forest, the immature forest, and new afforestation. The Tigris-Euphrates River Basin (TERB) is one of the key transboundary basins among the developing countries in the Middle East which has been significantly damaged by mismanagement, exploitation for energy production and unsustainable water use. This study aimed to evaluate the water and soil resources in the lower parts of this basin. More specifically, how the area of the Shatt al-Arab River (SAR) formed at the confluence of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers is affected in terms of quality by upstream activities. Four mathematical models of hydrodynamics, advection-dispersion in the river, and convection-dispersion in soil were used in conjunction with assessment of soil salinization by irrigation water. The soil salinization based on direct saltwater infiltration from riverbanks and soil salinization by irrigation with river water were predicted after simulating the intrusion of saline seawater by considering the tidal conditions of the SAR. The results showed that by applying six optimistic and probable scenarios of freshwater inflows for the future, changes in the water and soil quality in downstream riparian countries (Iran and Iraq) reflect this basin's developments and water allocation upstream. Regarding the possible scenario of maximum inflow reduction in the future, the findings of this study can be used to create a comprehensive view of the current condition and development challenges. This emphasizes the need for participatory crisis mitigation strategies between the upstream and downstream countries.

Anthropogenic activities such as mining, smelting industries, and the application of pesticides in agriculture might result in contamination of multiple heavy metals in the environment. Heavy metal contamination of sediment is a serious environmental problem, and thus the remediation of contaminated sediment is a worldwide challenge. Several strategies have been developed for the remediation of contaminated sediment, however the ecological risk and ecotoxicity of the restored sediment have rarely been evaluated. We assessed whether river sediment highly contaminated with heavy metals could be restored using microbial bioleaching followed by evaluating the residual toxicity and ecological risk of the microbially remediated sediment. Sequential extraction revealed that the bioavailable levels of Cu, Ni, and Zn in the contaminated sediment exceeded sediment quality guideline (SQG) thresholds. It was consequently found that acidophilic sulfur-oxidizing Acidicaldus sp. SV5 effectively bioleached Cu, Ni, and Zn from the contaminated sediment, reducing the bioavailable fraction of these elements below SQG thresholds. The ecological risk assessment indicated that SV5-driven remediation significantly reduced the potential ecological risk of the contaminated sediment. The residual ecotoxicity of the microbially remediated sediment was also tested with the soil nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. There was a significant decrease in the body burden of Cu, Ni, and Zn in C. elegans and a reduction in the toxicological effect on survival, growth, and reproduction in the microbially remediated sediment. Our study suggests that a combination of chemical analysis, chemical-based ecological risk assessment, and ecotoxicity tests would be helpful for the development of efficient and eco-friendly strategies for the restoration of contaminated sediment, which could be incorporated into sediment quality management practices.

Information on the water quality of rivers can be used to judge the effectiveness of past policies or to guide future environmental policies. Consequently, the location of water quality monitoring stations (WQMSs) plays an important role in river pollution control. In the 2000s, a literature developed on the optimization of WQMS location to identify pollution hot spots, average quality, or to minimize the detection time of a potential source of accidental pollution. This article is part of a new literature aimed at locating WQMSs in order to optimize the economic value of information (EVOI) generated by water quality monitoring networks (WQMNs). The field of study is a catchment in northeastern France where the purpose of quality measurement is to define a policy of reduction of agricultural nitrogen fertilizers in order to reach the standard of 50 mg/l of nitrate at the WQMS. Agro-hydrological and economic models estimate the net benefit of input reduction depending on the location of the WQMS on the basis of different assumptions concerning the ecological damage generated by nitrate. We show that the magnitude of the ecological damage and, consequently, the perception of the contamination generated by nitrate in water, play a decisive role on the optimal location of the WQMS, as well as on the benefit of the economic optimization of locations, compared to traditional optimization. Locating WQMSs in a way that maximizes EVOI will be more attractive for very high or very low levels of damage. However, in this context, linking damage to nitrate concentration or to concentration coupled with riparian population density alone will have little impact.

We developed an innovative approach to estimate the extent of fecal pollution sources for urban river catchments. The methodology consists of 1) catchment surveys complemented by literature data where needed for probabilistic estimates of daily produced fecal indicator (FIBs, E. coli, enterococci) and zoonotic reference pathogen numbers (Campylobacter, Cryptosporidium and Giardia) excreted by human and animal sources in a river catchment, 2) generating a hypothesis about the dominant sources of fecal pollution and selecting a source targeted monitoring design, and 3) verifying the results by comparing measured concentrations of chemical tracers, C. perfringens, and host-associated genetic microbial source tracking (MST) markers in the river, and by multi-parametric correlation analysis. We tested the approach at a study area in Vienna, Austria. The daily produced microbial particle numbers according to the probabilistic estimates indicated that, for the dry weather scenario, the discharge of treated wastewater (WWTP) was the primary contributor to fecal pollution. For the wet weather scenario, 80-99 % of the daily produced FIBs and pathogens resulted from combined sewer overflows (CSOs) according to the probabilistic estimates. When testing our hypothesis in the river, the measured concentrations of the human genetic fecal marker were log10 4 higher than for selected animal genetic fecal markers. Anthropogenic activities are intensively affecting the structure and function of biological communities in river ecosystems. The effects of anthropogenic pollution on single-trophic community have been widely explored, but their effects on the structures and co-occurrence patterns of multitrophic communities remain largely unknown. In this study, we collected 13 water samples from the Neijiang River in Chengdu City of China, and identified totally 2352 bacterial, 207 algal, 204 macroinvertebrate, and 33 fish species based on the eDNA metabarcoding to systematically investigate the responses of multitrophic communities to environmental stressors. We observed significant variations in bacterial, algal, and macroinvertebrate community structures (except fish) with the pollution levels in the river. Network analyses indicated a more intensive interspecific co-occurrence pattern at high pollution level. Although taxonomic diversity of the multitrophic communities varied insignificantly, phylogenetic diversities of fish and algae showed significantly positive and negative associations with the pollution levels, respectively. The impact of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances on microbial communities is challenging to investigate in situ because of the complexity and dynamics of natural ecosystems. In the present study, four microcosms were established to explore the impact of perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) on bacterial communities in riverine and marine settings. PFOA distribution between the aqueous and sedimentary phases fluctuated in both PFOA-amended and unamended control systems. PFOA was more rapidly partitioned into the sediment in marine than in riverine microcosms. Differences in iron concentration and salinity may influence PFOA exchange between water and sediment. In marine microcosms, the alpha diversity of bacterial communities was significantly correlated to PFOA concentration. PFOA tended to correlate more strongly with bacterial community composition in water than in sediment. At the whole system level, Lefse's analysis indicated Algoriphagus halophilus as biomarkers for PFOA exposure in both riverine and marine systems, and the family Flavobacteriaceae were also more abundant in the exposed systems. In terms of temporal variation (comparison between three time points in the systems), metastat analysis showed great variability of potential PFOA-sensitive bacteria at the genus level. As such, most PFOA-sensitive genera were transitory and variable and existed for a short term in different systems (river, sea, blank, and experiment) and phases. Compared with other PFOA-sensitive genera, we suggest that further research is carried out to explore the use of Limnobacter as a bioindicator for temporal monitoring of PFOA pollution.

Due to its independent control and directly easy operation, ecological water replenishment (EWR) has been an important measure for restoring river ecosystems. However, the positive and negative contribution of the EWR activities to aquifer system are not fully understood under the combined influences of climate change and human activities across time scales. A refined groundwater flow model integrating an open channel flow at daily time scales is developed in a part of Northern China Plain to reproduce the dynamic process of groundwater level changes. After model calibration with groundwater level and runoff data, the changes of simulated groundwater level and river runoff have the Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency coefficient of 0.98 and 0.60, respectively. Results clearly demonstrate that the impulse response of aquifer recovery to runoff in three centralized EWRs. By using with and without EWR method, the simulated maximum contribution of EWR near river to aquifer recovery may be over 70 %. Scenario analysis method considering different precipitation, groundwater exploitation reduction and EWR activities are applied to evaluate the total quantities of aquifer recovery. The prediction of nine-year EWR activities under multiple scenarios shows that the increased groundwater level generally varies from 4.08 to 8.57 m, and the contribution of EWR accounts for 7.88 %-36.59 %. It is also noticed that 14 out of the 18 informal landfill sites will face potential groundwater pollution risks, indicating the negative influences of long-term EWR activities. This study can provide a method for quantifying the influences and contribution of EWR on aquifer recovery and can be referred to as a guideline for EWR evaluation with similar hydrogeological conditions.

Rapid anthropogenic nutrient enrichment has caused widespread ecological problems in aquatic ecosystems and the resulting eutrophication has dramatically changed fish communities throughout the world. However, few studies addressed how fish communities responded to eutrophication in terms of multidimensional functional and taxonomic structure, especially how eutrophication acted as an environment filter on functional traits. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of eutrophication on fish species composition, community metrics and species functional traits in 26 shallow lakes from the middle reaches of Yangtze River basin, China. This study validated that eutrophication is an important factor shaping the fish community structure. Regression analyses showed that eutrophication favored higher total biomass and lower functional diversity of fish communities but had little effect on species richness. Despite the fact that some pelagic zooplanktivorous species were more abundant in the most eutrophic lakes, multivariate analyses of the relationships between species traits and environmental variables revealed weak relationships between feeding traits and eutrophication. In contrast, species with a benthic life stage were negatively associated with eutrophication while those with a large body size and high absolute fecundity showed the opposite trend. Due to demersal habitat degradation, and to a lesser degree, to changes in trophic resources availability, eutrophication caused functional simplification of fish communities by increasing functional traits homogeneity among the most tolerant species. Some relationships between functional traits and eutrophication well established in the western palearctic have not been observed in this study, emphasizing the importance of biases resulting from specific evolutionary histories. This work will provide useful insights on on-going restoration and management of shallow lakes in the Yangtze River basin.

Coastal marine ecosystems have structural and functional features usually connected by the seasonal transfer of nutrients and organisms. These environments can utilize inter-ecosystem subsidies to increase resilience and maturity and support human activities like fishing. However, the importance of the connection and the role of the seasonal pulse of energy flows to enhance maturity are still poorly understood and reported. Our objective in this paper is to assess the effect of seasonal hydrological pulses on two tropical coastal interconnected ecosystems. Thus, we made four Ecopath models for estuarine and neritic environments considering the dry and rainy seasons, with a similar sampling design that allowed them to be compared. Our results provide evidence for the occurrence of the pulsed ecosystems since both environments seem driven by the river flow. Estuary presents more and more substantial differences (measured by ecosystem attributes) in both seasons because it is directly affected by river floods than the neritic environment. The neritic is affected indirectly by the movement of species from the estuary and by a weaker river flow. In the dry season, the differences between ecosystems are lower because the dry season trend to homogenize cycling, maturity, homeostasis, and resilience. We found that the seasonal river flow (pulse) forces the variability of biomass, flows, and ecosystem features, and this variance creates the required stability for both ecosystems. Still, these environments benefit through the exchange of components that relieve the pressures of predation on specific groups and maintain the energy flow necessary for the functioning of their trophic webs. The pulse by the rainfall favors connectivity and equalizes the two systems, increasing the connectivity between them and the exchange of subsidies that strengthens the trophic structures, contributing to the increase in maturity. In these ecosystems, seasonal changes become a key factor for exchanging flows that will promote sustainability, the accumulation of more biomass (growth), and the optimization of reserve energy (development) in both systems. This efficient joint strategy of perpetuation is what promotes resistance and resilience to these ecosystems, which together can reach different states of equilibrium, translated into maturity to withstand new environmental changes.
