Background Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most common neurodevelopmental disorders among school-age children worldwide. In a more recent follow-up study, Biederman et al. found that 78% of children diagnosed with ADHD between the ages of 6–17 years continued to have a full (35%) or a partial persistence after eleven years. Objective In this study, it was aimed to identify the factors contributing to the persistence of ADHD symptoms in elemantary school children who were prospectively assessed both in their earlier and upper grades. Methods The sample was drawn from a previous community-based study where ADHD symptoms in 3696 first/or second graders were examined in regard to their school entry age. Two years after, the families of the children that participated in the initial study were called by phone and invited to a re-evaluation session. Among those who were reached, 154 were consequently eligible and were assessed with Swanson, Nolan and Pelham questionnaire (SNAP-IV), Conners’ rating scales (CRS) and the Kiddie schedule for affective disorders and schizophrenia (K-SADS). Results Of the 154 children, 81 had been evaluated to have “probable ADHD” by the initial interview. Among these 81 children, 50 (61.7%) were indeed diagnosed with ADHD after two years. Initial scores of the teacher reported SNAP-IV inattention subscale predicted the ADHD diagnosis after two years, with an odds ratio of 1.0761 (p = 0.032, Wald: 4.595). Conclusions Our results suggest that high inattention symptom scores reported by the teacher in the earlier grades, might predict an ADHD diagnosis in upper grades.

Summary Introduction The Holmium laser has proven to be an invaluable tool for endoscopic prostate enucleation. The proper energy selection, during the different steps of the procedure, has always been a matter of debate. In this work we compare the effectiveness of the Holmium laser, using two different low-power energy settings, during enucleation and hemostasis (20 W and 37.5 W). Methods One hundred and sixty patients underwent a HoLEP procedure with a 50 Hz and 2 J (100 W) setting. During enuleation and hemostasis, two different low-power settings were applied (20 W vs. 37.5 W). In both groups, only the prostatic tissue in the bladder neck and enucleated tissue far away from the apex, were cut with a setting of 50 Hz and 2 J (100 W). Results The mean enucleation efficiency (0.78 vs. 1.2 g/min-p:001) was significantly higher by utilizing 37.5 W energy (group 2). Additionally, the mean enucleation rate (0.64 vs. 0.88%–P:0.001) and laser efficiency (2.07 vs. 2.12 joule/g–P:0.003) were significantly higher in group 2. The enucleation time was significantly shorter (54 vs. 75.5 mins–P:0.002), while the mean catheter removal time (27 vs. 42 hrs–P:0.008) and Hb decrease (0.5 vs. 0.6 g/dl-–P:0.019) were significantly lower in group 2. Conclusions HoLEP can be performed efficiently with 100 W–37.5 W settings. Enucleation and hemostasis can be performed successfully with 37.5 W, while the use of 100 W during bladder neck dissection shortens the duration of the procedure. Level of evidence 3.

This report describes an improved protocol to generate stranded, barcoded RNA-seq libraries to capture the whole transcriptome. By optimizing the use of duplex specific nuclease (DSN) to remove ribosomal RNA reads from stranded barcoded libraries, we demonstrate improved efficiency of multiplexed next generation sequencing (NGS). This approach detects expression profiles of all RNA types, including miRNA (microRNA), piRNA (Piwi-interacting RNA), snoRNA (small nucleolar RNA), lincRNA (long non-coding RNA), mtRNA (mitochondrial RNA) and mRNA (messenger RNA) without the use of gel electrophoresis. The improved protocol generates high quality data that can be used to identify differential expression in known and novel coding and non-coding transcripts, splice variants, mitochondrial genes and SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms).

The effects of the hydrostatic pressure and temperature on the electronic and the linear and nonlinear optical properties (i.e., absorption coefficients and refractive indices) are investigated in a spherical quantum dot in the presence of the electric field. The energy levels and wave functions are calculated using the variational method within the effective-mass approximation. The results show that these external factors have a significant effect not only on the binding energy of the donor impurity but also on the optical characteristics of the system. Moreover, it is found that the total absorption coefficient is strongly affected by the existence of impurity, the incident optical intensity, and relaxation time.

In this study, we have calculated the oscillator strengths for intersubband electronic transitions associated with an on-center impurity in a spherical quantum dot. Numerical calculations have been performed for both infinite confinement case and for different finite confining potential values in a spherical CdS/SiO2 quantum dot. Also, for comparison purpose, oscillator strengths for a spherical ZnS/SiO2 quantum dot with an infinite confinement potential are evaluated.

K shell fluorescence yields for As, Se, Br, Rb, Sr, Zr, Nb, Mo Ru, Pd, Ag, Cd, In, Sn, Sb, Te and I are reported. The experimental values of the fluorescence yields were determined by measuring K X-ray fluorescence and incoherent scattered γ -ray spectrum induced by 59.5 keV photons employing a Ge(Li) detector system in a reflection geometry set-up. For measuring the K shell fluorescence yield, the intensity ratio of K X-rays to incoherently scattered γ -rays was used. For this reason, carbon was used as a scattering target. The experimental results are compared with literature experimental values, theoretical predictions, and semiempirical fits.

Following encouraging results from several single-center studies showing that early histological manifestations of chronic rejection are seen in the graft before a decline in transplant function, we tested this concept in a multicenter study and investigated whether protocol needle biopsy may be used as a surrogate to late graft survival in multicenter renal transplantation trials. During two mycophenolate mofetil trials, 621 representative protocol biopsies were obtained at baseline, 1 year, and 3 years. The samples were coded and evaluated blindly by two pathologists and a Chronic Allograft Damage Index (CADI) score was constructed. At 1 year only 20% of patients had elevated (1.5 mg/100 mL) serum creatinine, whereas 60% of the biopsies demonstrated an elevated (2.0) CADI score. The mean CADI score at baseline, 1.3 +/- 1.1, increased to 3.3 +/- 1.8 at 1 year and to 4.1 +/- 2.2 at 3 years. The patients at 1 year were divided into 3 groups, those with CADI2, between 2 and 3.9, and4.0, the first two groups having normal (1.4 +/- 0.3 and 1.5 +/- 0.6 mg/dL) and the third group pathological (1.9 +/- 0.8 mg/dL) levels of serum creatinine. At 3 years there were no lost grafts in the "low" CADI group, six lost grafts (4.6%) in the "elevated" CADI group, and 17 lost grafts (16.7%) in the "high" CADI group (P.001). One-year histological CADI score predicts graft survival even when the graft function is still normal. This observation makes it possible to use CADI as a surrogate endpoint in prevention trials and to identify the patients at risk for intervention trials.

Using ground sections from the teeth of young pigs injected at 2-weekly intervals with marker dyes, it was possible to visualize and photograph von Ebner growth lines situated between labelled increments, provided that both the bright field and ultraviolet illuminators of a Leitz Ortholux microscope were used simultaneously. Counts on five sections revealed that 13 von Ebner lines, and therefore 14 increments, existed between two successive fluorescing lines. This confirmed the commonly held belief that von Ebner lines are a visible manifestation of a daily rhythm of dentine deposition. Von Ebner lines are visible in dentine as a result of the refractive Becke effect, indicating an abrupt, though possibly small, change in refractive index at the junctions between adjacent layers of dentine. The most likely explanation of this is a change in the composition of forming dentine during the course of each day.
