Abstract

We developed a VHF plasma source using a balanced power feeding method and investigated the characteristics of the VHF plasma with the Langmuir probe. It was found that the new VHF plasma source provides higher electron density plasma that is favorable for increasing the deposition rate of microcrystalline silicon films.

Abstract

A VHF SiH 4 /H 2 plasma was produced using a ladder-shaped electrode of 1200 mm×141 mm. In this case, VHF power up to 200 W was fed to the ladder-shaped electrode through the matching box. The plasma parameters in mixture gas plasma of SiH 4 /H 2 were measured with a heated Langmuir probe and examined as a function of gas mixture rate. A uniform VHF plasma was achieved over 1 m at the frequency of 60 MHz. Furthermore, when the concentration of SiH 4 gas was increased, the ion saturation current decreased while the electron temperature increased.

Abstract

This paper presents an exact analysis of the problem of a penny-shaped crack in a transversely isotropic piezoelectric medium subjected to arbitrary shear loading that is antisymmetric with respect to the crack plane. The analysis is based on the general solution of three-dimensional piezoelasticity, which is represented by four quasi-harmonic displacement functions. It is shown that these harmonics can be represented by one complex potential. By using the previous results in potential theory, an exact solution is obtained. In particular, for uniform shear and point shear loadings, complete expressions for the elastoelectric field are derived in terms of elementary functions.

Abstract

A 40-year-old female patient with chronic persistent cough was diagnosed with cough variant asthma (CVA). To investigate the effect of suplatast tosilate (suplatast, 300 mg/day, three times a day), cough scores, medication scores, pulmonary function, capsaicin cough threshold, bronchial hyperresponsiveness (BHR) to methacholine and eosinophilic cationic protein (ECP) concentration in hypertonic saline-induced sputum were evaluated before and after a 6-week treatment with suplatast. Treatment with suplatast resulted in a marked decrease in persistent cough and in the percentage of eosinophils and ECP concentration in induced sputum. It also resulted in a marked improvement in capsaicin cough threshold and a slight improvement in BHR. These results suggest that suplatast tosilate may be useful for treating patients with CVA.

Abstract

To analyze the thermal responses of vascular tissues to the laser ablation, and to evaluate the effects of different media and probe temperatures, we investigated the effects on human cadaveric aorta using the bare-ended probe (BEP) and the metal-tip probe (MTP). In case of use of the BEP, the average laser energy for the perforation of the aortic wall was about 4J in the air, 51 in the blood and 9.6J in the saline. Especially, the average energy for the perforation in the saline needed about twice as much as in the air and blood. Perforation of the aortic wall occurred immediately after lasing. Therefore, we employed angioscope at the time of laser angioplasty to observe the intravascular lesions and to vaporize the plaques with safety. Application of angioscope could reduce the perforation rate, and angioscope was useful for observation of new recanalized by lasing. In case of use of the MTP, it was proved that the changes of tip temperature were obviously different from the size of metal tip, that is, the smaller MTP was more effective on plaques under the same laser energy. Therefore, optimal laser energy for single ablation were from 15J to 25J in 2.0mm tip and from 301 to 40J in 2.5mm tip. And, MTP/vessel diameter ratio below 0.7 should be utilized for preventing excessive thermal damage to the arterial wall. It was important that MTP to be suitable for vessel diameter should be used to laser angioplasty. On the other hand, we recently had an opportunity to use MTP that could be controlled a tip temperature and maintained it for lasing. The effects of thermal ablation were studied about this probe compared with MTP used conventional fashion. The average depth of crater between 500C and 150~C was shallow and there was not so much effective on ablation. The crater depth between 200°C and 300~C increased steadily, but the penetration and perforation of the aortic wall occurred frequently beyond 300"C. Additionally, there were no significant differences in effects of thermal ablation between small tips and large tips. So it could be considered that optimal temperature for laser angioplasty ranged between 200"C and 300"C from the effects of ablation to the arterial wall. In conclusion, in case of use of the BEP, angioscope was available to perform laser angioplasty with safety. The smaller MTP was more effective on atherosclerotic plaques under the same laser energy. MTP/vessel diameter ratio below 0.7 should be utilized for preventing excessive thermal damage to the arterial wall. In case of use of the MTP with thermal feedback control system, optimal temperature for angioplasty ranged between 200"C and 300"C.

Abstract

Plastic flow localization in the yielding of mild steel is theoretically studied in terms of the instability of the uniform mode of yielding. The instability is judged by the small perturbation theory in which the development of non-uniform modes superimposed upon the basic uniform mode is examined. The constitutive equation of rate-dependent type and the criterion of yield initiation at the plastic-zone front are employed as the constitutive relations of mild steel. Abstract

The analysis of the yield process of mild steel in the plane problems is presented. The continuously distributed dislocations model of the edge component type is adapted with a new application technique as the method of solving the elastic-plane problems. Hahn's equation and the criterion of yield initiation proposed in the previous work [1] are employed as the constitutive relations of mild steel. Examples are taken for the bending of straight beams which is known to accompany the particular patterns with wedge-type plastic-zones. The calculated plastic-zone patterns exhibit close resemblance to the actually observed ones and the scale effect of the patterns given by the analysis is reconfirmed by the related pure bending experiments.
