It is of great importance to treat a bacterial-infected wound by a smart dressing capable of delivering antibiotics in a smart manner without causing drug resistance. The construction of smart release nanocontainers responsive to near-infrared (NIR) laser irradiation in an on-demand and stepwise way is a promising strategy for avoiding the emergence of multidrug-resistant bacteria. Here, we develop a hydrogel composite made of alginate and nanotubes with an efficient NIR-triggered release of rifampicin and outstanding antibacterial ability. This composite hydrogel is prepared through co-encapsulating antibacterial drug (rifampicin), NIR-absorbing dye (indocyanine green), and phase-change materials (a eutectic mixture of fatty acids) into halloysite nanotubes, followed by incorporation into alginate hydrogels, allowing the in-situ gelation at room temperature and maintaining the integrity of drug-loaded nanotubes. Among them, the eutectic mixture with a melting point of 39 °C serves as the biocompatible phase-change material to facilitate the NIR-triggered drug release. Targeting the delivery of anti-cancer drugs to a tumor site is essential for effective treatment and to ensure minimal damage to healthy cells and tissues. In this work, a chitosan-based nanoplatform was constructed for combined photothermal therapy and chemotherapy of breast cancer. The pH-sensitive and biocompatible biopolymer chitosan (CS) was grafted with N-vinylcaprolactam (NVCL) and modified with biotin (Bio), imparting it with temperature sensitive property and also the ability for active targeting. The polymer self-assembled to give nanoparticles (NPs) loaded with indocyanine green (ICG) and doxorubicin (DOX). When the NPs are exposed to near-infrared (NIR) laser irradiation, ICG converts the light to heat, inducing a significant phase transition in the NPs and facilitating the release of the drug cargo. In addition, the solubility of chitosan is increased in the slightly acidic microenvironment of the tumor site, which also promotes drug release. A detailed analysis of the NPs both in vitro and in vivo showed that the carrier system is biocompatible, while the drug-loaded NPs are selectively taken up by cancer cells. Particularly when augmented with NIR irradiation, this leads to potent cell death in vitro and also in an in vivo murine xenograft model of breast cancer.

Far-ranging and improper uses of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) over the last few decades have led to severe water contamination that imposes serious effects on human beings and the ecological system. Therefore, there is an increasing demand for a highly-efficient and environmentally friendly technology for the removal of PPCPs from aqueous solutions. Adsorption technology is an appropriate technology to solve this issue. Carbon-based composites, ranging from modified activated carbon to functionalized biochar, show great potential for this purpose. This review hence elaborates on the environmental occurrences and risks of PPCPs and summarizes the recent progress in removing PPCPs from water using carbon-based adsorbents. The pore structure, relatively large specific surface area (SSA), abundant surface functional groups, highly aromatic structures and the extra excellent characteristics of the cooperative materials contribute to their outstanding adsorption performance. Furthermore, the biochar-clay material is cost effective and more efficient compared to traditional activated carbon regarding the adsorption of PPCPs. Among the emerging adsorbents, graphene and carbon nanotubes composites show superior adsorption ability. Their adsorption mechanisms, such as electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding, and pore filling, are discussed in details.

Carbohydrates are widely distributed in nature as an important nutritional substance and energy source. However, the utilization efficiency of carbohydrates is very poor in fish. Over consumption of carbohydrates will cause excessive inflammatory response and result in lower pathogen resistance in fish. Probiotics have been widely used to prevent inflammation, but the underlying mechanism still needs more exploration. In this study, three diets, including a control diet (CD), a high-carbohydrate diet (HD) and the HD supplemented with Bacillus amyloliquefaciens SS1 (HDB) were used to feed Nile tilapia for 10 weeks. At the end of the feeding trial, fish were challenged with Aeromonas hydrophila (A. hydrophila) for 7 days. The data showed that the addition of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens SS1 (B. amyloliquefaciens SS1) significantly increased the survival rate and enhanced the respiratory burst activity of head kidney leukocytes in Nile tilapia. B. amyloliquefaciens SS1 treatment significantly elevated the anti-oxidative capability, which was evidenced by higher activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), and higher content of reduced glutathione (GSH) in the serum. Administration with B. amyloliquefaciens SS1 effectively suppressed inflammatory response in the liver by inhibiting nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB)/interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) inflammatory signaling pathway. In vitro analysis suggested that intestinal bacteria derived-acetate has the antioxidant capability, which may account for the alleviation of inflammation. Overall, this study demonstrated that dietary supplementation with B. amyloliquefaciens SS1 protected Nile Tilapia against A. hydrophila infection and suppressed liver inflammation by enhancing antioxidant capability.

Evidence indicates that the cerebellum is involved in cognitive processing. However, the specific mechanisms through which the cerebellum repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) contributes to the cognitive state are unclear.In the current randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled trial, 27 patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) were randomly allotted to one of the two groups: rTMS-real or rTMS-sham. We investigated the efficacy of a four-week treatment of bilateral cerebellum rTMS to promote cognitive recovery and alter specific cerebello-cerebral functional connectivity.The cerebellum rTMS significantly improves multi-domain cognitive functions, directly associated with the observed intrinsic functional connectivity between the cerebellum nodes and the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), medial frontal cortex, and the cingulate cortex in the real rTMS group. In contrast, the sham stimulation showed no significant impact on the clinical improvements and the cerebello-cerebral connectivity.Our results depict that 5 Hz rTMS of the bilateral cerebellum is a promising, non-invasive treatment of cognitive dysfunction in AD patients. This cognitive improvement is accompanied by brain connectivity modulation and is consistent with the pathophysiological brain disconnection model in AD patients.
