Abstract: International audience; In the field of flash sintering, microwave energy represents an interesting way to densify ceramics complex shapes, thanks to a contactless volumetric heating. Attaining a fast and homogeneous heating is a critical parameter and hybrid heating, using silicon carbide susceptors, is generally used. In this study, an original multiple susceptors cascade strategy is developed, using both SiC and 3D-printed ZrO2 susceptors. This novel configuration follows perfectly the flash heating scheme, even for high heating rates up to 1000 K.min-1 and leads to a high stability of the "flash" hybrid heating. Flash microwave sintering produced dense (97% relative density) microstructures within 45 s. Based on comprehensive multiphysics simulations of the overall process, in-situ dilatometry measurements, kinetics method analysis and microstructural characterizations, this work highlights the sintering behavior of zirconia and the temperature distribution during flash microwave sintering.

Abstract: Background The aim of this study was to review, systematically, evidence concerning the link between the ACTN3 R577X polymorphism and the rates and severity of non-contact injuries and exercise-induced muscle damage in athletes and individuals enrolled in exercise training programs. Methods A computerized literature search was performed in the electronic databases PubMed, Web of Science, and SPORTDiscus, from inception until November 2020. All included studies compared the epidemiological characteristics of non-contact injury between the different genotypes of the ACTN3 R577X polymorphism. Results Our search identified 492 records. After the screening of titles, abstracts, and full texts, 13 studies examining the association between the ACTN3 genotypes and the rate and severity of non-contact injury were included in the analysis. These studies were performed in 6 different countries (Spain, Japan, Brazil, China, Republic of Korea, and Italy) and involved a total participant pool of 1093 participants. Of the studies, 2 studies involved only women, 5 studies involved only men, and 6 studies involved both men and women. All the studies included were classified as high-quality studies (≥6 points in the Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) scale score). Overall, evidence suggests there is an association between the ACTN3 R577X genotype and non-contact injury in 12 investigations. Six studies observed a significant association between ACTN3 R577X polymorphism and exercise induced muscle damage: two with non-contact ankle injury, three with non-contact muscle injury, and one with overall non-contact injury. Conclusion The present findings support the premise that possessing the ACTN3 XX genotype may predispose athletes to a higher probability of some non-contact injuries, such as muscle injury, ankle sprains, and higher levels of exercise-induced muscle damage.

Abstract: International audience; We readdress the nature and creation mechanism of the defects absorbing at 4.7 eV in Swift Heavy Ion (SHI)-irradiated AlN semiconductor. Irradiations are performed in different controlled atmospheres (vacuum, oxygen, helium or argon partial pressure) to investigate the coupled effects of (i) the synergy between electronic excitations (Se) and nuclear collisions (Sn) for point defect creation and (ii) SHI-induced impurity introduction/diffusion into the AlN layer. We found that the synergy, previously reported, between Se and Sn for defect formation must also be related to the presence of oxygen during irradiation. At the same Se, the synergy parameter is indeed increased by up to two orders of magnitude during irradiation under O2 compared to irradiation under vacuum. By SHI irradiation and by a fine-tuning of the irradiation atmosphere, we then control the activation or inhibition of these light-emitted point defects (oxygen-vacancy complexes) which can be used as qubits for applications in quantum computing.

Abstract: International audience; BACKGROUND: Use of a combination of targeted therapies (COMBIO) in patients with refractory/overlapping immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs) has increased, but reported data remain scarce. We aimed to assess effectiveness and safety of COMBIO in patients with IMIDs. METHODS: We conducted a French ambispective multicenter cohort study from September 2020 to May 2021, including adults' patients with 1 or 2 IMIDs and treated at least 3-month with COMBIO. RESULTS: Overall, 143 patients were included. The most common IMIDs were Crohn's disease (63.6%), axial spondyloarthritis (37.7%), and ulcerative colitis (14%). Half of patients had only one IMID, of which 60% were Crohn's disease. Mean duration of COMBIO was 274.5±59.3 weeks, and COMBIO persistence at 104 weeks was estimated at 64.1%. The most frequent COMBIOs combined anti-TNF agents with vedolizumab (30%) or ustekinumab (28.7%). Overall, 50% of patients achieved significant and 27% mild-to-moderate improvement in patient-reported outcomes. Extended duration of COMBIO (aOR=1.09; 95% CI: 1.03-1.14; p=0.002) and diagnoses of two IMIDs (aOR=3.46; 95%CI: 1.29-9.26; p=0.013) were associated with significant improvement in patient-reported outcomes. Incidence of serious infection during COMBIO was 4.51 per 100 person-years (95% CI 2.20-8.27) and 5 COMBIOs were discontinued due to adverse events. CONCLUSIONS: COMBIO can be effective and safe in patients with refractory/overlapping IMIDs.

Abstract: International audience; The first demonstration of a nanoscaled titanium zirconium nitride (TiZrN2) single-phase isolated during the preparation of polymer-derived silicon nitride (Si3N4) matrix nanocomposites is discussed. We employed a polysilazane, which was chemically modified with Zr[N(CH2CH3)2]4 and Ti[N(CH3)2]4 then ammonolyzed before a pyrolysis step under ammonia (1000 °C) and a heat-treatment in flowing nitrogen (1000–1700 °C). Based on a careful control of the precursor chemistry in the early stage of the process and nano-/microstructural investigations of the material performed during its preparation, we were able to identify TiZrN2 nanocrystals with a size as low as 9 nm distributed in α- and β-Si3N4 phases at a temperature as low as 1500 °C. We particularly proved that the TiZrN2 nanophase could be generated because of the use of the polysilazane evoluting towards a covalently-bonded Si3N4 matrix . This unique nanostructure is expected to provide particular functionality to Si3N4 as noble metal-free catalysts and components with high plasmonic quality.

Abstract: Gastroparesis is the most common gastric motility disorder. The cardinal symptoms are nausea, vomiting, gastric fullness, early satiety, or bloating, associated with slow gastric emptying in the absence of mechanical obstruction. Delayed gastric emptying is demonstrated by a gastric emptying scintigraphy or by a breath test. Gastroparesis can be idiopathic, post-operative, secondary to diabetes, iatrogenic, or post-infectious. Therapeutic care must be multidisciplinary including nutritional, medical, endoscopic and surgical modes. The complications of delayed gastric emptying must be sought and addressed, particularly malnutrition, in order to identify and correct vitamin deficiencies and fluid and electrolyte disturbances. An etiology should be identified and treated whenever possible. Improvement in symptoms can be treated by dietary regimes and pharmaceutical treatments, including prokinetics. If these are not effective, specialized endoscopic approaches such as endoscopic or surgical pyloromyotomy aim at relaxing the pyloric sphincter, while the implantation of an electrical stimulator of gastric muscle should be discussed in specialized centers.

Abstract: International audience; Zinc oxide optical ceramics containing 0 – 2 wt% ytterbium are prepared byuniaxial hot pressing of commercial oxides at 1150 and 1180 °C. The ceramics have themain crystalline phase of hexagonal wurtzite-type ZnO. Ytterbium ions do not enter theZnO crystals but form a cubic sesquioxide phase of Yb2O3 located at the ZnO grainboundaries. Yb acts as an inhibitor for the ZnO grain growth. The ceramics exhibittransmittance up to 60% in the visible. Their transmission in the infrared is determinedby the free charge carrier absorption. The Yb3+ ions are found in C2 and C3i sites in Yb2O3crystals. Under X-ray excitation, the ceramics exhibit intense luminescence bands in theblue (near-band-edge emission) and green (defect emission) whose positions, intensitiesand decay times depend on the Yb content. Yb2O3 causes a redistribution of luminescenceintensity in favor of the near-band-edge emission and fastens the emission decay.

Abstract: International audience; Question: In people with non-small cell lung cancer, what is the effect of condensing 15 prehabilitation sessions into a 3-week regimen compared with a 5-week regimen?Design: Randomised controlled trial with concealed allocation, intention-to-treat analysis and blinded assessment of the primary outcome.Participants: People with diagnosed or suspected non-small cell lung cancer and moderate-to-high risk of postoperative complications. Intervention: Fifteen supervised prehabilitation sessions delivered with either a dense regimen of five sessions/week for 3 weeks (experimental group) or a non-dense regimen of three sessions/week for 5 weeks (control group).Outcome measures: The primary outcome was the change in cardiorespiratory fitness measured by the V̇O2peak in ml/kg/min. The secondary outcomes were the change in other variables of interest measured during cardiopulmonary exercise testing, non-invasive nutritional markers, quadriceps maximal voluntary isometric contractions, maximal inspiratory pressure, quality of life, adherence and postoperative complications.Results: Changes with the experimental regimen were similar to or better than changes with the control regimen for: V̇O2peak (MD 1.2 ml/kg/min, 95% CI −0.1 to 2.6); V̇E/V̇CO2 slope (MD −3.6 points, 95% CI −8.7 to 1.5); and work rate at ventilatory threshold (MD 3.7 W, 95% CI −5.6 to 13.0). The two regimens had similar effects on: peak work rate (MD 1.3 W, 95% CI −6.4 to 9.0), V̇O2 at ventilatory threshold (MD 0.0 ml/kg/min, 95% CI −1.4 to 1.4); body mass index (MD −0.2 kg/m2, 95% CI −0.5 to 0.1); and maximal inspiratory pressure (MD −0.7 cmH2O, 95% CI −9.8 to 8.4). The relative effect was uncertain for quadriceps maximal voluntary isometric contractions, quality of life and complications.Conclusion: Condensing prehabilitation sessions led to similar or better improvement in cardiorespiratory fitness and did not decrease adherence or increase adverse events. This could increase the number of patients who can be referred for prehabilitation, despite short presurgical periods. Trial registration: NCT03936764.

Abstract: International audience; Flash sintering is a very promising method with a great potential for the ultra-rapid production of objects with firing processes of mere seconds. However, the transition from few millimeters samples to larger scales is a key issue. In this study, we explore the spark plasma sintering approach allowing a stable hybrid heating in flash condition and producing near net shape sintered specimens. Two electric current configurations are employed for diameters of 15 and 30 mm to determine the effect of scale change and of electric current concentration. These experiments coupled with a Multiphysics simulation indicate that stable flash conditions can be reached for 30 mm specimens. However, even if the electrical current concentration is very effective at small sizes, it generates peripheral hot spots for large specimen dimensions. The blackening effect on zirconia flash specimens acts then as an indicator of the specimen thermal history.

Corrosion product layers (CPL) were characterized from micro to nanoscale. Local corrosion areas of higher thicknesses were composed of siderite layers with different nano-morphologies, iron silicate, iron sulphate and magnetite. Abstract: Purpose To develop a particle transport code to compute w-values and stopping power of swift ions in liquid water and gases of interest for reference dosimetry in hadrontherapy. To analyze the relevance of inelastic and post-collisional processes considered. Methods The Monte Carlo code MDM was extended to the case of swift ion impact on liquid water (MDM-Ion). Relativistic corrections in the inelastic cross sections and the post-collisional Auger emission were considered. The effects of introducing different electronic excitation cross sections were also studied. Results The stopping power of swift ions on liquid water, calculated with MDM-Ion, are in excellent agreement with recommended data. The w-values show a strong dependence on the electronic excitation cross sections and on the Auger electron emission. Comparisons with other Monte Carlo codes show the relevance of both the processes considered and of the cross sections employed. W and w-values for swift electron, proton, and carbon ions calculated with the MDM and MDM-Ion codes are in very close agreement with each other and with the 20.8 eV experimental value. Conclusion We found that w-values in liquid water are independent of ion charge and energy, as assumed in reference dosimetry for hadrontherapy from sparse experimental results for electron and ion impact on gases. Excitation cross sections and Auger emission included in Monte Carlo codes are critical in w-values calculations. The computation of this physical parameter should be used as a benchmark for micro-dosimetry investigations, to assess the reliability of the cross sections employed.

Abstract: Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are brominated flame retardants that are used in polymeric materials. Due to their adverse health effects, the use of recycled wastes has been forbidden if the total PBDE content exceeds 0.1% (w/w). The objective was to estimate the proportion of PBDEs in professional seating furnishing wastes to identify the materials in which the content of PBDEs (and particularly BDE-209) could exceed the limit to eliminate them from recycling. An analytical process (microwave extraction followed by purification and chromatographic analysis) was adapted to assess with a unique methodology the amounts of eight PBDEs in materials that result from various seating wastes, such as hard plastics, foams and accompanying textiles. X-ray fluorescence (XRF) was used to rapidly predict critical PBDE concentrations via Br. From 100 samples, the total PBDE content did not exceed the current tolerated threshold. The examined materials contained only trace levels of former PBDE formulations, and BDE-209 was identified at higher amounts, mainly in hard plastics, but these amounts were less than 312 mg kg−1. Since XRF was not reliable for quantitative measurements and was not specific, no direct correlation could be identified between Br and PBDE levels. Br was strongly associated with As in all the materials, but the presence of PBDEs was not clearly associated with the presence of other metals that are used in flame retardants.

Abstract: International audience; Objectives: Since the 2000s, there has been an increase in prevalence of neurosyphilis (NS) and ocular syphilis (OS). As data about symptomatic NS/OS is limited, this study aims to assess the characteristics of symptomatic NS/OS, according to HIV status.Methods: We compared the clinical and biological presentation of early symptomatic NS/OS and its outcome in HIV-positive and HIV-negative patients.Results: Ninety-six patients (93% men, 49% HIV-positive) were included from 2000 to 2016 in two centers, with 67 (69%) having OS, 15 (16%) NS, and 14 (14%) both. HIV-positive patients were younger (P = 0.006) and more likely to be males having sex with males (P = 0.00048) or to have a history of syphilis (P = 0.01). Among 81 OS, there were 43 posterior uveitis (57%), and bilateral involvement was more common in HIV-positive patients (62% versus 38%, P = 0.045). Among 29 NS there were 21 cases of cranial nerve involvement (72%), seven meningitis (24%) and 11 paresthesia (38%). Involvement of the VIIIth cranial nerve was the most common (16 cases). Treponemal tests were more commonly found positive in cerebrospinal fluid in HIV-positive patients (88% versus 76%, P = 0.04). Visual acuity (VA) always improved after treatment (initial VA logMAR 0.8 ± 0.8 versus 0.1 ± 0.1 at 3 months), but 32% and 18% of the patients still had neurological or ocular impairment respectively six and 12 months after treatment. Non-treponemal serological reversion was observed in 43/50 patients (88%) at six months.Conclusion: HIV infection has no consequence on the outcome of NS and OS. Sequelae are common, emphasizing the importance of prevention, and screening, and questioning enhanced treatment.

Abstract: Context Understanding men’s values and preferences in the context of personal, physical, emotional, relational, and social factors is important in optimising patient counselling, facilitating treatment decision-making, and improving guideline recommendations. Objective To systematically review the available evidence regarding the values, preferences, and expectations of men towards the investigation and treatment (conservative, pharmacological, and surgical) of male lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). Evidence acquisition We searched electronic databases until August 31, 2020 for quantitative and qualitative studies that reported values and preferences regarding the investigation and treatment of LUTS in men. We assessed the quality of evidence and risk of bias using the Grading of Recommendation, Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) and GRADE Confidence in the Evidence from Reviews of Qualitative Research (CERQual) approaches. Evidence synthesis We included 25 quantitative studies, three qualitative studies, and one mixed-methods study recruiting 9235 patients. Most men reported urodynamic testing to be acceptable, despite discomfort or embarrassment, as it significantly informs treatment decisions (low certainty evidence). Men preferred conservative and less risky treatment options, but the preference varied depending on baseline symptom severity and the risk/benefit characteristics of the treatment (moderate certainty). Men preferred pharmacological treatments with a low risk of erectile dysfunction and those especially improving urgency incontinence (moderate certainty). Other important preference considerations included reducing the risk of acute urinary retention or surgery (moderate certainty). Conclusions Men prefer lower-risk management options that have fewer sexual side effects and are primarily effective at improving urgency incontinence and nocturia. Overall, the evidence was rated to be of low to moderate certainty. This review can facilitate the treatment decision-making process and improve the trustworthiness of guideline recommendations. Patient summary We thoroughly reviewed the evidence addressing men’s values and preferences regarding the management of urinary symptoms and found that minimising adverse effects is particularly important. Further research to understand other factors that matter to men is required.

Abstract: International audience; This paper presents a thorough analysis of direct microwave heating as a sintering process of ceramic materials. It questions why susceptor-assisted microwave heating is used in most experimental works, although direct microwave coupling is preferable for taking advantage of the possible beneficial effects of the microwave field on the sintering phenomena. This issue was investigated by conducting both experiments and numerical simulations. The experiments consisted of sintering alumina and yttria doped zirconia powder samples in a 2.45 GHz resonant cavity with automatic thermal monitoring, whereas the numerical simulations coupled electromagnetics, thermal transfer and sample deformation. Alumina and yttria doped zirconia are widely used materials and they exhibit different microwave field behaviours (transparent and absorbent, respectively), which are representative of most ceramic materials. The influence of the insulating material was discussed by considering different sintering cell designs. The very low coupling capacity of alumina made its direct heating very difficult. It was therefore necessary to apply a strong electric field to heat it. This situation promoted the absorption of microwave energy by other elements such as the insulating material, leading to heating instabilities and degradation of the insulation cell. In the case of zirconia, its coupling properties change abruptly with increasing temperature. It is poorly absorbent at low temperature, highly absorbent at intermediate temperature and it finally becomes reflective at the end of the sintering process. The consequences of this behaviour are (i) a very difficult control of direct heating (ii) a propensity to form damaging hot spots and (iii) the impossibility to reach high temperatures without forming plasma. Therefore, this experimental and numerical study showed that direct microwave heating is not suitable for conducting reliable and homogeneous sintering of classical ceramics. This explains why susceptor-assisted heating is most of time preferred.

Abstract: International audience; Thermoelectric performance largely depends on the reduction of lattice thermal conductivity (κL). The study of the thermal conductivity (κ) of a Sb2Te3/graphite nanocomposite system demonstrates ∼40% reduction in κL with graphite incorporation. A plausible explanation of intrinsic low κL observed in Sb2Te3 based system is presented by modeling experimental specific heat (Cp) data. Raman spectroscopy measurement combined to X-Ray diffraction data confirms the presence of graphite as separate phase in the composite sample. It is found that phonon scattering dominates heat transport mechanism in the nanostructured Sb2Te3/graphite composite. Large reduction in κL is accomplished by intensifying scattering rate of phonons via various sources. Graphite introduces effective scattering sources, i.e., defects of different dimensionalities in synthesized nanocomposite sample. Furthermore, graphite mediates phonon-phonon coupling and enhances lattice anharmonicity, which causes an intrinsic scattering of phonons with all frequencies in the Sb2Te3/graphite nanocomposite sample. Dislocation density and phonon anharmonicity of the synthesized samples are estimated from in depth analysis of temperature dependent synchrotron powder diffraction and Raman spectroscopic data. κL value as low as 0.8 W m−1K−1 at 300 K, achieved with graphite dispersion in Sb2Te3 based composite system makes the present comprehensive study an interesting concept to be developed in thermoelectric materials.

Abstract: International audience; Pressure assisted sintering models involve creep based mechanisms having different stress exponent values. The later evolve from linear viscous diffusional creep mechanisms to highly non-linear mechanisms involving dislocation motion. Consequently, the determination of the stress exponent is of key importance to define the sintering mechanisms and one of the first parameters to identify for the assessment of sintering model. Different methods exist in the literature involving tests at different pressures or with a stepwise pressure profile to extract the creep stress sensitivity. Open questions remain on the accuracy of these methods with the impact of sintering stress (high in ceramics nano-powders) or transient microstructure evolution for the stepwise approaches. This accuracy issue is investigated on an alumina submicronic powder by comparing different methods based on sinter-forging and Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) at 1200°C. We show that the sintering stress has a high influence on the identified value of stress exponent. Otherwise, the combination of sintering stress and transient behavior at the level of the pressure "jump" of the stepwise method can lead to high disturbance in the identified values.

Abstract: International audience; •The coupled influence of the intense electronic and nuclear energy deposition on the defect production were investigated in UO2.•The evolution of local disorder (evaluated by Raman) and the stress level (determined by XRD) on fluorite-type oxides ceramics under the effect of intense electronic excitation was followed.•A possible synergetic effect between the pre-existing defects and those generated by intense electronic ionizations was revealed. The coupled effects of nuclear and electronic energy losses were investigated in uranium dioxide (UO2). Single and sequential ion irradiations were carried out with 92 MeV Xe ions and 0.9 MeV I ions. Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analyses were combined with the inelastic thermal spike (iTS) model to investigate the effect of electronic ionizations on the ballistic damage. It appears that the high-energy ions induce a significant change in the defect distribution with an amplitude that depends on the level of pre-existing disorder. This modification essentially results in an acceleration of the transformation from the dislocation loops to the dislocation lines, a process that is accompanied by a stress relaxation. Surprisingly, with the fluence increase of 92 MeV Xe ions, the stress starts to increase again, highlighting a possible synergetic effect between the pre-existing defects and those generated by the 92 MeV Xe ions irradiation.

Abstract: International audience; Ceramic stereolithography or vat photopolymerization is a process allowing the fabrication of ceramic objects with highly complex shapes. Lattices structures are particularly used together with advanced optimization topology tools for the design of printable lightweight shapes with optimized mechanical resistance. If the mechanical resistance of these lattices structures is well controlled at the polymeric state, they can be severely deformed at high temperatures during the sintering stage. The deformation sensitivity of the lattices structures during the sintering should then be determined to include this aspect at the conception stage. The finite element (FEM) simulation of lattices sintering is an interesting solution to anticipate numerically the deformation sensitivity of the lattices and determine their minimum wall thickness. This requires to determine the sintering behavior of the printed green specimens and to take into account the sintering anisotropy, which involves weaker resistance between the layers. In this study the sintering behavior is first determined by multiple-axis dilatometry, modeled analytically and then simulated by the FEM method. Afterward, the sintering simulation of lattices with different wall thicknesses is conducted. This allows testing the simulation tool predictability for each lattices wall thickness and to compare their deformation sensitivity at high temperatures.

Abstract: International audience; Different position isomers of furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) can be obtained from the biomass by a Henkel disproportionation reaction. 2,5- and 2,4-FDCA are obtained in amounts that are large enough to be used for the synthesis of polyethylene furanoate (PEF). The homopolyesters obtained with ethylene glycol (EG) and either 2,5- or 2,4-FDCA have a completely different crystallization behavior, for 2,5-PEF can crystallize whereas 2,4-PEF cannot, even after very long annealing times. The synthesis of random copolyesters with EG and different ratios of 2,5/2,4-FDCA may therefore allow to tune PEF crystallization ability. The partial replacement of 2,5-FDCA by its position isomer could help disrupting crystallinity analogously to what happens when EG is partially replaced by cyclohexane dimethanol (CHDM) in glycolyzed polyethylene terephthalate (PETg). This work investigates the thermal behavior of the homopolyester 2,5-PEF and the microstructural consequences of copolymerization (replacement of small amounts of 2,5-FDCA with 2,4-FDCA). Crystallization is performed in isothermal conditions after cooling down from the molten state, and investigated with both conventional DSC and Fast Scanning Calorimetry (FSC). When the amount of 2,4-FDCA-based repeating units is low (10 and 15 mol %), crystallization still occurs but with an increased induction time. Neither the crystalline nor the rigid amorphous fractions are significantly affected by copolymerization. Due to multiple and complex microstructural reorganizations observed at relatively slow heating rates, conventional DSC is inaccurate and does not provide a reliable microstructural depiction of these polyesters. The use of FSC is recommended, for it allows to obtain a better characterization of the quality and thermal stability of the formed crystals.

Abstract: International audience; In this study, the SPS of 0.1 µm zirconia has been performed and shows high densification rate behavior in the final stage. This work consists of modeling the densification behavior of this powder especially at the intermediate/final stage transition. To model this, a Master Sintering Curve (MSC) is combined with an analytic model to identify the activation energy and the sintering moduli. The modeling of the behavior of the powder during the sintering tests is done via the Skorohod-Olevsky model. It appears from this study that the modeling of final stage sintering requires a regime transition to model the exceptionally high densification rate of the powder. The final stage grain growth seems not to decrease the final stage sintering kinetics.

This red color has been assigned to reddish organic materials, either inherited from the protosolar disk during accretion, or formed through radiolytic processes in the surface due to exposure to solar or interstellar photons, Solar Wind, Solar Energetic Particles or Galactic Cosmic Rays. Here, we investigated the physiological interactions between 26RFa and insulin in two complementary models i.e. a model of obese/hyperglycemic mice deficient for 26RFa and a model of diabetic mice deficient for insulin. For this, transgenic 26RFa-deficient mice were made obese and chronically hyperglycemic by a 3-month high fat diet (HFD) and second group of mice was made diabetic by destruction of the β cells of the pancreatic islets using a single injection of streptozotocin. Our data reveal that 26RFa deficiency does not impact significantly the “glycemic” phenotype of the HFD mice. The pancreatic islets, liver, white adipose tissue masses are not altered by the lack of 26RFa production but the brown adipose tissue (BAT) weight is significantly increased in these animals. In diabetic insulin-deficient mice, the injection of 26RFa does not exhibit any beneficial effect on the impaired glucose homeostasis characterizing this model. Finally, we show that streptozotocin diabetic mice display lowered plasma 26RFa levels as compared to untreated mice, whereas the expression of the peptide in the duodenum is not affected. Taken together, the present results indicate that dysregulation of glucose homeostasis in obese/hyperglycemic mice is not aggravated by the absence of 26RFa that may be compensated by the increase of BAT mass. In diabetic insulin-deficient mice, the antihypergycemic effect of 26RFa is totally blunted probably as a result of the impaired insulin production characterizing this model, avoiding therefore the action of the peptide.

Abstract: Background & aims: The year 2019 marked the centenary of the publication of the Harris and Benedict equations for estimation of energy expenditure. In October 2019 a Scientific Symposium was organized by the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN) in Vienna, Austria, to celebrate this historical landmark, looking at what is currently known about the estimation and measurement of energy expenditure. Methods: Current evidence was discussed during the symposium, including the scientific basis and clinical knowledge, and is summarized here to assist with the estimation and measurement of energy requirements that later translate into energy prescription. Results: In most clinical settings, the majority of predictive equations have low to moderate performance, with the best generally reaching an accuracy of no more than 70%, and often lead to large errors in estimating the true needs of patients. Generally speaking, the addition of body composition measurements did not add to the accuracy of predictive equations. Indirect calorimetry is the most reliable method to measure energy expenditure and guide energy prescription, but carries inherent limitations, greatly restricting its use in real life clinical practice. Conclusions: While the limitations of predictive equations are clear, their use is still the mainstay in clinical practice. It is imperative to recognize specific patient populations for whom a specific equation should be preferred. When available, the use of indirect calorimetry is advised in a variety of clinical settings, aiming to avoid under-as well as overfeeding. Abstract: International audience; Glucocorticoids are involved in the developing brain but, in excessive amounts, may depress its growth and cause psychomotor development disorders. To test the long-term vulnerability of motor structures such as the cerebellum to supraphysiological corticosterone (CORT), the hormone was subcutaneously delivered at a dose of 20 mg/kg from postnatal day (P) 8 to P29 in C57BL/6 male mice evaluated for sensorimotor functions at P15, P22, P29, and 3 months. Relative to placebo, CORT increased motor activity in the open-field at P29 and 3 months as well as facilitating rotorod acquisition and visuomotor control necessary for swimming towards a visible goal without affecting spatial learning in the Morris water maze. CORT caused lobulespecific effects on cerebellar morphology by decreasing granule cell layer thickness in simplex lobule but increasing molecular and granule cell layer thickness in crus 2. The functional impact of these changes is indicated by significant correlations found between cerebellar size and activity levels or proficiency on the rotorod test of motor coordination.

Abstract: International audience; Mechanical properties in tension of cobalt have been studied in a wide range of grain size d using thickness t of samples from 125 to 700 μm. The Hall and Petch (HP) relationship indicates that the yield stress strongly varies for t/d below a critical value around 14, highlighting the existence of a multicrystalline regime. The behavior becomes almost single crystalline when t/d is lower than 2.5, with a very small HP slope. The reduction of the t/d ratio has also a large influence on the work hardening of cobalt, especially in the beginning of plasticity, which mainly corresponds to the stage of basal slip mechanisms. However, these size effects tend to vanish when twinning becomes predominant. Nanoindentation measurements and application of a simple composite model show that the appearance of the multicrystalline regime is closely related to surface effects that develop through the thickness of the specimens. In addition, the Kocks - Mecking work hardening model predicts a significant increase of the average free path of dislocations in the basal slip stage. A quantitative analysis of dislocation pile-ups that develop during this stage supports the hypothesis that the mechanical softening observed in cobalt multicrystal is related to a higher activity of dislocations, which can escape more easily on free surfaces. When twinning becomes the main deformation mechanism, dislocation glide is restricted which reduced, in turn, the surface effect. Consequently, size effects gradually disappear with hardening.

Abstract: Hypothesis Computer fluid dynamics simulations of dynamic wetting are often performed using a slip model on the substrate. In previous studies, the generalized Navier boundary condition (GNBC) has shown promising results and could help clear the gap between molecular and continuum scales, but lacks quantitative comparisons to experiments. We seek to investigate the dependence between the contact-line velocity and the slip length in a GNBC, by confronting numerical simulations to experimental data. Experiments The physical properties of a molten polymer (polyethylene glycol) were assessed thoroughly. Its dynamic contact angle on a cellulosic substrate was measured carefully using the Wilhelmy method. The experiment was reproduced in a finite elements model using a GNBC. It was repeated for capillary numbers between 10−6 and 10−1, and slip lengths ranging from 1 μm to 1 mm. Findings A realistic value of the slip length was selected by matching the dynamic contact angles issued from numerical simulations and their experimental counterparts. The slip length behavior as a function of contact line velocity displayed a clear transition. The model also reproduced a dynamic wetting transition between frictional and viscous dissipations, which seems to be linked to an increasing difference between microscopic and macroscopic contact angles.

Abstract: Summary Objectives To study the impact of COVID-19 lockdown on cognitions and emotions felt during sexual intercourse by analyzing the responses of 1079 French-speaking subjects (338 men, 741 women, median age: 31 years) who participated in an online survey between April 27 and May 11, 2020. Method Negative sexual cognitions (NSC), positive sexual emotions (PSE) and negative sexual emotions (NSE) are assessed using a tool inspired by the Sexual Mode Questionnaire. Data are crossed with sociodemographic indicators, information on lockdown modalities, indices on sex life, information on psychological functioning and sexual satisfaction. Main results One third of the participants saw a decrease in the frequency of their sexual activities or in their sexual satisfaction. Changes in NSCs were found in 74.4% of subjects (increase: 38.4%; decrease: 36%). Emotional changes are found in between 50.7% (NSC: increase: 20.2%; decrease: 30.5%) and 60.9% (PSE: increase: 24.6%; decrease: 36.3%) of participants. The effect of lockdown on NSC, NSE, and PSE depends on gender at birth, intensity of depressive symptoms, and attachment styles. Women appear to be more vulnerable to lockdown than men. Insecure or depressed subjects also appear more vulnerable. The lockdown impact also depends on changes in the frequency of physical/digital intercourse during lockdown and the modalities of confinement. Changes in NSC, NSE, and PSE had a significant effect on sexual satisfaction during lockdown. Conclusion The lockdown impact on sexual emotions and cognitions is non-negligible and greater than the impact on sexual behaviors. Whether it is positive or negative, it asks about the post-confinement repercussions: what becomes of a positive impact with deconfinement? Will the negative impacts be one-off or will vulnerabilities be expressed over the long-term?

Abstract: International audience; Study objective: To assess the prevalence, risk factors, and management of bowel stenosis after surgery for deep infiltrating endometriosis of the rectosigmoid using either disk excision (DE) or segmental resection (SR).Design: Retrospective study using data from consecutive cases recorded in the North-West Inter Regional Female Cohort for Patients with Endometriosis database.Setting: University tertiary referral center.Patients: Four hundred thirty-one consecutive patients managed for rectosigmoid endometriosis were enrolled in our study.Interventions: Laparoscopic SR or DE.Measurements and main results: One hundred sixty-five patients underwent DE, and 266 patients underwent SR. Abstract: Most sputtering yield measurements for solid N 2 are reported for stopping powers lower than 10 − 13 eV cm 2 /molecule. We measured the sputtering yield for solid N 2 at stopping powers, in the electronic regime, above 10 − 12 eV cm 2 /molecule, extending the range of such measurements by more than an order of magnitude, using a 33 MeV 58Ni 9 + swift heavy ions beam. The evolution of the thin N 2 ice films was monitored in-situ by mid-infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) during irradiation. As N 2 is only weakly infrared active, and can be hardly monitored directly via an infrared absorption mode in such experiments, we use the Fabry–Perot interference fringes of the ice film to evaluate, via an optical model, the erosion of the N 2 film as a function of ion fluence. A sputtering model including several sputtering crater shapes is developed and tested against experimental data. We derive the sputtering yield for a semi-infinite N 2 ice film and its dependence with the ice thickness for thin film conditions, monitoring the N 2 ice sputtering depth. We combine the results with previous measurements at lower stopping powers to derive the electronic sputtering of solid N 2 over a large stopping power range.

Abstract: Accurate testing of muscle function is essential in individuals with cystic fibrosis (CF). A literature search was conducted in MEDLINE, CENTRAL, CINAHL, PEDro, ScienceDirect and Web of Science according to PRISMA and COSMIN guidelines from inception to September 2019 to investigate the clinimetric properties of muscle tests in individuals with CF. The search identified 37 studies (1310 individuals) and 34 different muscle tests. Maximal inspiratory pressure, inspiratory work capacity and quadriceps strength measured by computerised dynamometry were identified as reliable tests of muscle function. The one-minute sit-to-stand test was found to have high reliability but its validity to measure quadriceps strength is unknown. The clinimetric properties of other routinely used tests have not been reported in people with CF. Very different measurement procedures were identified. Inspiratory muscle and quadriceps testing can be considered as reliable but high-quality studies evaluating tests of other muscles function (e.g. muscle endurance) are lacking.

Abstract: International audience; Background and aimsIBS patients have an impaired quality of life (QoL) and feel dissatisfaction with medical care. We aim to describe the expectations of members of the French Association of IBS patients (APSSII) concerning health care providers (HCPs) and a patients’ organization.Patients and methodsFrom January to June 2013, APSSII members were asked to answer questionnaires on their expectations and experiences concerning IBS and HCP.Results222/330 (67%) responded (women: 68.5%, 46.5 ± 17.7 years, disease duration: 8.8 ± 0.7 years, IBS-D 33.6%, IBS-C 26.7%, IBS-M 38.2%. IBS-SSS > 300 in 53% and HAD score > 19 in 45%). QoL impairment was correlated with disease severity and HAD score (r = −0.707 and r = −0.484, P < 0.001 respectively), but not with IBS subtype. Expectations for IBS were “improved health”, “better information on causes and treatments” (94%) and “better disease recognition” (86%). A significant gap was observed between expectations and experiences with HCPs. Better information, less isolation, recognition of the disease and a decrease in medical expenses were the main expectations for joining a patients’ organization.ConclusionsFrench IBS patients have a severe disease with a significant psychological impact and impaired QoL in half of the patients, certain unsatisfied expectations concerning HCP and high expectations in joining a patients’ organization.

Abstract: Summary Objectives Recent years have seen renewed interest for the study of motivations underlying the adoption of sexual behavior. And yet, there is still very little investigation into the psychological determinants of sexual motivation. To contribute to this field of knowledge we analyze the relationships between defense mechanisms and sexual motivations. Method Data for 295 subjects were collected online (241 women, 54 men, mean age: 23.26 years). The evaluation of defensive functioning was carried out using the Defense Style Questionnaire in its 28-item version. Sexual motivations were assessed using the French translation of the Reason for Having Sex Questionnaire (YSEX). Main Results Loving and physical motives lead most frequently to sexual relations. Positive correlations were found between mature defense styles and the number of sexual partners. Multiple regression analysis shows that defenses significantly contribute to explaining between 4.3 and 8.6% of variance in sexual motives. Regardless of the defensive style considered, the correlation is positive. Immature defense mechanisms are the main defenses related to sexual motives. Results are discussed according to literature on sexual motives and literature on defense mechanisms. Conclusion Psycho-sexological consultations investigating motivations for sexuality could benefit from a differential approach based on prior assessment of defensive functioning in order to best individually adapt clinical care.

Abstract: Summary Introduction Little is known about long-term efficacy and tolerance of intra-detrusor injections of abobotulinumtoxinA for management of idiopathic overactive bladder (OAB). We report long-term efficacy and compliance of abobotulinumtoxinA in patients treated for OAB. Methods All patients treated with abotulinumtoxinA for OAB in a tertiary reference centre between 2005 and 2012 were included in a retrospective analysis. Patients received 150, 250 or 500 U of abotulinumtoxinA as first injection. The primary endpoint was the discontinuation rate at 5 years. Other outcomes of interest were: rate of failure, reasons for discontinuation and subsequent treatment elected in those who did not persist with abobotulinumtoxinA. Results Fifty-nine patients (50 women and 9 men) were included. Forty-one patients (69.4%) received 250 U of abobotulinumtoxinA as first injection. Thirteen patients (22%) received 500 U and 5 (8.4%) received 150 U of BoNT-A. Median follow-up was 83.6 months [0.3–183.6]. Median number of injections per patient was 2 [1–15] and median reinjection interval was 10.7 [3–86.4] months. The estimated 5-year discontinuation-free survival rate was 23.4%. Fourteen patients (23.7%) experienced persistent improvement of symptoms and 12 patients (20.3%) stopped the injections because of tolerability issues. Main cause of discontinuation was primary failure, which occurred in 21 patients (35.5%). Conclusion Overall, 59.3% of patients were successfully treated with first abobotulinumtoxinA injection. Although the estimated 5-year discontinuation-free survival rate is low, abobotulinumtoxinA could be considered as an alternative off-labelled in patients not responders to onabotulinumtoxinA after failure of other conservative measures. Abstract: International audience; High‐entropy stabilization chemistry offers a new paradigm in the design of functional materials stabilized by the high configurational entropy. In the present work, a new high entropy spinel material with composition (Mg0.2Co0.2Ni0.2Cu0.2Zn0.2)Al2O4 is introduced, detailed structural and microstructural characterizations highlight that the material crystallizes in a cubic spinel structure with an excellent chemical homogeneity at the nanoscale. Magnetic studies show that the frustration (magnetic) parameter (f =│θCW│/TM> 27) is significantly enhanced in this new diamond lattice spinel material.

Abstract: The approach to the sciatic plexus and lateral part of the sacrum is difficult. A subperitoneal anterolateral approach can be extended by sectioning the iliac bone above the acetabulum and lowering it toward the external part of the iliac wing and buttock. This transiliac anterolateral approach exposes the lumbosacral trunk, first sacral foramina and sciatic plexus to the origin of the sciatic trunk. Exposure can be extended upward by subperitoneal lumbotomy, downward by opening the ischiorectal fossa, or outward by trochanterotomy. This approach was used 18 times by one of the authors (FHD) for resection of 13 malignant tumors and 5 plexus releases. Procedure time was 3-6hours, with 500-4,000ml blood loss. The approach systematically enabled surgical objectives to be met. There was 1 septic complication that healed after debridement.

Abstract: International audience; Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has become the reference imaging for the management of a large number of diseases. The number of MR examinations increases every year, simultaneously with the number of patients receiving a cardiac electronic implantable device (CEID). A CEID was considered an absolute contraindication for MRI for years. The progressive replacement of conventional pacemakers and defibrillators by MR-conditional CEIDs and recent data on the safety of MRI in patients with "MR-nonconditional" CEIDs have progressively increased the demand for MRI in patients with a CEID. However, some risks are associated with MRI in CEID carriers, even with "MR-conditional" devices because these devices are not "MR-safe". A specific programing of the device in "MR-mode" and monitoring patients during MRI remain mandatory for all patients with a CEID. A standardized patient workflow based on an institutional protocol should be established in each institution performing such examinations. This joint position paper of the Working Group of Pacing and Electrophysiology of the French Society of Cardiology and the Société française d'imagerie cardiaque et vasculaire diagnostique et interventionnelle (SFICV) describes the effect and risks associated with MRI in CEID carriers. We propose recommendations for patient workflow and monitoring and CEID programming in MR-conditional, "MR-conditional nonguaranteed" and MR-nonconditional devices.

Abstract: International audience; Field assisted sintering (FAST) processesallow a direct transmission of the heating energy to the specimen (through the electric, magnetic fields or the electrical current). FAST allows higher heating rates, faster sintering response and a better control of the sintered microstructures. However, FAST suffers high heating instability in direct heating configurations which generally takes the form of a hot spot. The origin of these hot spots is well known and is correlatedto the convective/radiative cooling at the specimen surfaces and the thermal dissipation in the specimen. Nevertheless, the impact of these cooling fluxes evolves with the sample dimensions, thermal insulation, heating rate and hybrid heating conditions and there is not clear quantification of the relative importance of these fluxes in regards totheprevious citedheating conditions.In this work we developafinite element (FE) tool whichcan easily explore the heating stability of an “Equivalent ThermalCavity” (ETC). We illustrate the ETCconceptby the case study of the microwave sintering of zirconia.We show that the dominant heat transfer is radiative, but the convective fluxes have a high importance for the temperatures homogenization, in particular in the case of a hybrid heating configuration.

Abstract: Summary Background & aims Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a severe psychological and potentially life-threatening eating disorder. The activity-based anorexia (ABA) mouse model is commonly used to investigate physiological abnormalities associated with this disorder. Characterizing the holistic biochemical alterations induced by anorexia is essential to understanding AN pathophysiology as well as to define biomarkers for prognosis. Methods To unravel the adaptive biochemical mechanisms occurring in this model in response to self-starvation, the urinary, plasma and fecal metabolic phenotypes of mice under different experimental conditions were compared. This included control mice with and without physical activity (CT and CTPA mice), a group with limited food access (LFA), and a group with both limited food access and physical activity (ABA). Using 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, several biochemical perturbations were observed. Results Physical activity altered the abundance of 14 fecal metabolites, including those involved in gut microbial metabolism and proteolysis. Food restriction disrupted a wide range of metabolic pathways including gut microbial metabolism, proteolysis and fatty acid breakdown (24 urinary and 6 plasma metabolites). The combined impact of food restriction and physical activity resulted in the same pattern of metabolic disruption (24 urine, 6 plasma). Conclusions This work defined the metabolic signatures of ABA mice and provides novel insights into biological adaptations of mice in response to both food restriction and physical activity. These results should be further confirmed in AN patients.

Abstract: International audience; A water-soluble polysaccharide (PSPC) was extracted from the seeds of Plantago ciliata Desf., a spontaneous Algerian Saharan plant by a hot aqueous extraction then purified by successive ethanolic precipitations. The final extraction yield for PSPC was close to 18.6% (w/v). PSPC was then investigated regarding its global composition, structural features and rheological properties. PSPC is a neutral arabinoxylan, composed of a β-(1,3)/β-(1,4)-D-xylan backbone with side chains of Xylp, and Araf residues attached in O-2 and O-3 positions. The macromolecular characteristics of PSPC in water was determined by SEC/MALLS, with a high molecular weight (Mw) of 700 kDa, a low polydispersity index (PDI) of 1.47 and an intrinsic viscosity [η] close to 157 mL/g. PSPC showed a pseudoplastic behavior in semi-dilute media and the critical overlay concentration (C*) was estimated around 0.32–0.37% (w/v). This current research has supplied original structural information on a new arabinoxylan which could be particularly useful as a novel source of soluble fiber belonging to psyllium.

Abstract: Neurological involvement is frequent in inherited metabolic disease of the intoxication type. Hyperammonemic coma related to these diseases may cause severe neurological sequelae. Early optimal treatment is mandatory combining metabolite scavengers (MS) and sometimes continuous veno-venous hemodialysis (CVVHD). We aimed to describe the therapeutic management of hyperammonemia in neonates upon diagnosis of their metabolic disease and to compare neonates managed with MS alone or with both MS and CVVHD. We conducted a retrospective study including all neonates admitted for initial hyperammonemia to the pediatric intensive care unit of a Reference Center of Inherited Metabolic Diseases, between 2001 and 2012. The study included 35 neonates. Before admission, MS were initiated for 11 neonates. At admission, the median ammonia levels were 391 μmol/L and were significantly lower in neonates who received MS before admission. At admission, ammonia levels were 644 μmol/L in dialyzed and 283 μmol/L in non-dialyzed neonates. The median time to reach a 50% decrease of the initial ammonia levels was significantly shorter in dialyzed neonates; however, the normalization of ammonia levels was similar between dialyzed and non-dialyzed neonates. Hemodynamic disorders were more frequent in dialyzed neonates. Conclusion MS represent an effective treatment for hyperammonemia and should be available in all pediatric units to avoid the need for CVVHD. Although CVVHD enhances the kinetics of toxic metabolite decrease, it is associated with adverse hemodynamic effects.

Abstract: Objective The aim of this study was to determine the success rate of sEEG in locating the epileptogenic zone (EZ) in patients with pharmaco-resistant epilepsy. Secondary objectives were to analyze sEEG-related morbidity and outcomes for post-sEEG thermocoagulation and cortical resection. Methods Data were collected on 49 sEEGs from 46 consecutive patients between 2010 and 2018. Following sEEG, either resective or palliative surgery with vagus nerve stimulation was performed. In 8 patients, EZ thermocoagulation was performed before EEG leads were withdrawn. Outcomes were collected based on the Engel and ILAE outcome scales. Results sEEG was contributive in 45 of 49 recordings, with a success rate of 92% in locating the EZ. Minor complications, such as transient neurologic deficit and electrode implantation failures, occurred in 6%. One major complication occurred, with death due to atypical late hematoma. Thermocoagulation was performed in 8 patients and stopped or significantly reduced seizure frequency in 7 (88%). Outcome of surgical resection (n = 33) was good, with 20 (61%) seizure-free patients and 32 (97%) with definite improvement. Conclusions Our findings suggest that sEEG is an effective technique for EZ location in patients with drug-resistant epilepsy. sEEG was contributive in up to 92% of patients, allowing thermocoagulation and/or surgical resection that resulted in seizure-freedom in two-thirds and seizure-reduction in one-third of cases. This study highlights the need for strict selection of implantation candidates, with strong initial hypothesis as to EZ location.

Abstract: Resume Objectif La prise en charge des patients d’urologie est bouleversee par l’epidemie de COVID-19. En urologie fonctionnelle, certaines situations cliniques sont a haut risque de complication en cas de retard de prise en charge et il existe une grande heterogeneite de delais souhaitables de reprogrammation en cas d’annulation. Une hierarchisation de la priorite accordee aux actes d’urologie fonctionnelle est donc necessaire pour adapter les prises en charge durant la crise COVID-19 et mieux organiser la reprise d’activite post-epidemie. Materiel et methode L’avis des comites scientifiques de l’AFU dans le domaine de l’urologie fonctionnelle (comite de neuro-urologie, CUROPF, CTMH) a ete sollicite et complete par une revue des recommandations sur le sujet urologie et COVID-19 diffusee sur les reseaux sociaux ou publies. Ces avis ont ete reunis pour etablir des recommandations temporaires visant a aider la reorganisation des pratiques durant l’epidemie et lors de la phase post-critique. Resultats La majorite des recommandations diffusees (litterature ou reseaux sociaux – Twitter, LinkedIn) concernent la cancerologie ou l’ensemble de l’urologie. Huit sur dix proposent une annulation en bloc de tous les actes d’urologie fonctionnelle sans distinction. Les 3 comites reunis identifient pourtant 3 situations ou des actes chirurgicaux/instrumentaux devraient etre maintenus durant l’epidemie de COVID-19 (niveau A de priorite) : 2e temps de test de neuromodulation en cours, injections vesicales de toxine botulique A pour neuro-vessie non equilibree, cystectomie-Bricker pour fistule urinaire dans une escarre perineale ou neuro-vessie non equilibree avec insuffisance renale recente et fistules vesico-enterales ou uro-osseuses. Des adaptations de prise en charge des autres pathologies sont proposees ainsi que l’application de 3 autres niveaux de priorite (B, C, D) afin d’aider a la reprogrammation lors de la reprise de l’activite post-crise COVID-19. Dans tous les cas, l’accompagnement du patient, en particulier, par teleconsultation est essentiel. Conclusion Les 3 comites d’urologie fonctionnelle de l’AFU reunis indiquent qu’il existe des situations en urologie fonctionnelle pour lesquelles la prise en charge ne peut etre retardee, pour les autres des adaptations sont proposees. Une hierarchisation des priorites de reprogrammation apparait necessaire pour limiter l’impact des delais sur la sante des patients et faciliter l’organisation de la reprise d’activite apres la fin du confinement total.

Abstract: International audience; Barium titanate doped with calcium and zirconium (BCTZ) could be used at low temperature to replace lead based piezoelectric ceramics (PZT). The classical way to obtain BCTZ is the solid-state route coupled with conventional sintering, but this step is time-consuming. To reduce the duration of this process, microwave heating was used for sintering. It is a fast sintering method and the heating rate was around 200 °C/min in this study. Slightly better electrical properties with finer microstructures (d33* = 706 pm/V, grain size about 42.1 ± 14.2 μm) were obtained for samples sintered by microwave heating during 50 min compared to the conventional sintering (d33* = 622 pm/V, 22.6 ± 4.4 μm). The main result of this study is that by using microwave heating, the sintering step duration (including heating, dwell time and cooling) was drastically reduced: 1.5 h for microwave sintering against 12.5 h for conventional sintering.

Abstract: Giant cell arteritis is the most common primary vasculitis of large-vessel occurring in subjects over 50 years of age. Many imaging techniques has been evaluated to improve the diagnosis of giant cell arteritis. Among these imaging techniques, ultrasound has shown good performances to detect inflammatory involvement of the temporal arteries as well as branches of the aorta. Several publications and recent EULAR recommendations have emhasized the place of this tool in the diagnosis of giant cell arteritis., L’artérite à cellules géantes est la plus fréquente des vascularites primitives des artères de gros calibre survenant chez les sujets de plus de 50 ans. Plusieurs examens d’imagerie ont été évalués dans le but d’affiner le diagnostic de l’artérite à cellules géantes. Parmi ces techniques, l’écho-doppler a montré de bonnes performances pour dépister une atteinte inflammatoire des artères temporales ainsi que des branches de l’aorte. Plusieurs publications et les récentes recommandations de l’EULAR ont réaffirmé la place de cette technique dans le diagnostic d’artérite à cellules géantes.

Abstract: Char-pellet combustion is studied with the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) including sodium release and the ash inhibition effect on oxygen diffusion in the porous char. The sodium release and the shrinking of the char pellet are simulated by accounting for the reactions occurring both in the solid and gas phases. The combustion of a single char pellet is considered first, and the results are compared against measurements. The simulation of the pellet mass, pellet temperature and sodium release agreed well with in-house optical measurements. The validated lattice Boltzmann approach is then extended to investigate the combustion of porous char and sodium release inside the porous medium. The pore-structure evolution and the flow path variation are simulated as combustion proceeds. The simulations reproduce the expected different behaviors between the combustion products (CO and CO2) and the released volatile, here the sodium vapor. The combustion products are mostly generated at the flame front and then transported by the flow and molecular diffusion inside the complex porous char structure. However, the volatile sodium vapor forms in the entire porous char and tends to accumulate in regions where the flow motion stays weak, as in internal flow microchannels, or blocked, as in closed pores.
