Human respiratory syncytial viruses (HRSV), human parainfluenza viruses (HPIV), and human adenoviruses (HAdVs) cause a substantial morbidity burden globally. We sought to estimate morbidity burden, assess seasonality, and determine factors associated with these respiratory viruses in Kenya. The data were obtained from Kenyan sites included in the Köppen-Geiger climate classification system. We defined the proportion of morbidity burden by descriptive analysis and visualized time-series data for January 2007-December 2013. Logistic regression was used to identify factors associated with infection outcomes. The morbidity burden for HRSV was 3.1%, HPIV 5.3% and HAdVs 3.3%. Infants were more likely to be infected than other age groups. HRSV exhibited seasonality with high occurrence in January-March (odds ratio[OR] = 2.73) and April-June (OR = 3.01). Hot land surface temperature (≥40 °C) was associated with HRSV infections (OR = 2.75), as was warmer air temperature (19-22.9 °C) (OR = 1.68), compared with land surface temperature (30) and cooler air temperature (19 °C) respectively. Moderate rainfall (150-200 mm) areas had greater odds of HRSV infection (OR = 1.32) than low rainfall (150 mm).HRSV, HPIV and HAdVs contributed to morbidity burden, and infants were significantly affected. HRSV had a clear seasonal pattern and were associated with climate parameters, unlike HPIV and HAdVs.

Radioactivity levels for conventional thermal diffusivity test specimens are often prohibitively high for examination with candidate metallic materials, such as tungsten and reduced activation steels for fusion energy. Therefore, in the ongoing Japan–US PHENIX project, irradiation in the high flux isotope reactor (HFIR) was performed with the miniature specimen form of diameter (D) 3 mm × thickness (T) 1/2 mm small disk for thermal diffusivity measurement. In this study, the thermal diffusivity measurement of this miniature specimen is validated using a Netzsch LFA-467 ‘Hyper Flash’ thermal analyzer and ‘graphene nanoplatelets containing agent’. With careful surface treatment and data analysis, the miniature specimens showed almost the same value as the diameter 10 mm standard specimens.

Annual Product Review recommending by the Food and Drug Administration and the International Conference on Harmonization is a periodic assessment of products quality to verifying the consistency of the production process and the quality of the finished product. In this work it was performed an annual product review using multivariate statistical process control. Multivariate control charts was used for the periodic evaluation of the Hydrochlorothiazide 25 mg tablet, produced between 2009 and 2013 in the Pharmaceutical Laboratory of Pernambuco (Brazil). The procedure has allowed one to monitor and diagnose deviations in the production process. A corrective action was taken in the process by the Quality System in 2011 and the methodology applied was used to evaluate this action’s effectiveness. Through the Multivariate Statistical Process Control it was possible to make an annual product review in accordance with the pharmaceutical industry regulatory requirements.

Melamine is a compound commonly used in the manufacturing of plastic and flame retardant products, but due to its solubility on water and high nitrogen content, it is also used to adulterate milk to mask adulteration by dilution in protein content tests. This work proposes a quick method using excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy and second-order calibration methods (PARAFAC and U-PLS/RBL) for the identification and quantification of melamine in milk. The proposed method uses a single clean-up step with acetic acid, resulting in a quick, low-cost, and environmentally friendly procedure, in agreement with green chemistry principles. Both PARAFAC and U-PLS/RBL were capable of detecting melamine in milk above 120.6 and 146.5 ppm respectively, adequate for adulterations above 2% in volume, with RMSEPs of 68.6 and 81.9 ppm, respectively.

This work investigated the application of supervised pattern recognition of complex number data obtained by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in order to obtain qualitative/discriminatory electroanalytical methods based on electronic tongues/noses. As a case study, electrochemical impedance spectra of aqueous extracts of coffee samples were obtained with a single label-free sensor and submitted to complex numbers-supervised pattern recognition to detect the adulteration of ground roasted coffee by the addition of coffee husks and sticks. Partial least-squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) and soft independent modeling by class analogy (SIMCA), two of the most employed multivariate classification techniques, were evaluated to classify coffee samples as adulterated or unadulterated by the direct analysis of complex impedance spectra. They are techniques whose mathematical logic can be easily employed in the treatment of complex numbers with very little or even no modification, by using the Hermitian transpose instead of the common nonconjugate transpose. The predictive ability of complex numbers–supervised pattern recognition on the identification of adulterated ground roasted coffees was compared to that obtained with impedance data presented as real numbers – real (Z’), imaginary (Z”), absolute impedance (|Z|), and phase angle (ϕ). A discussion about the most suitable classification algorithm for the type of data employed was held. The highest predictive ability was obtained by applying complex numbers-PLS-DA, with 100 % and 96 % of the adulterated and unadulterated test samples correctly identified, respectively, with no need for reducing complex spectra to real numbers.

The textile industry widely uses reactive dyes to obtain cotton fabrics having good resistance to color removal despite frequent washing. This level of dye usage generates substantial volumes of wastewater containing significant quantities of residual dye requiring treatment before discharges from commercial dyeing operations to public waterways. As part of a study aimed at recycling/reusing rather than discharging reactive dye wastewater, well-known dyes Reactive Yellow 176, Reactive Red 241, and Reactive Blue 221 were used in dyeing cotton fabric, and the generated wastewater samples were decolorized with H2O2 catalyzed by UV light. The efficiency of UV/H2O2 decolorization for trichromic wastewater was determined by UV-Vis monitoring at 550 nm, wherein it was found that more than 91% of color removal in trichromic wastewater occurred at pH 4. The reuse of wastewater was investigated by a total of three sequential cycles of wastewater treatments. The quality of cotton dyed with reused wastewater was assessed through color measurements using CIELAB, fastness to light, and wash fastness testing. Results showed that MCT/VS-based reactive dye wastewater arising from UV/ H2O2 treatment could be used for two subsequent dyeing cycles without compromising the quality of the color of the dyed cotton fabrics. The proposed treatment can also save water and salt, enhancing the economy of the dyeing process.

The quality control of pharmaceutical production has focused on controlling impurity formation and product degradation. High temperatures, humidity, and the presence of hygroscopic excipients affect the stability of captopril. These conditions accelerate the degradation of captopril and favor the formation of captopril disulfide. In this study, multivariate control charts were combined with vibrational spectroscopy to monitor the stability of captopril. Fifty spectra of different batches of normal captopril were recorded in the mid-infrared (MIR) and near-infrared (NIR) spectral regions, and they were used in the training phase of multivariate charts. The validation phase consisted of 20 lots of normal captopril and 10 lots past their expiration dates. A stability study was performed by subjecting one batch of captopril to a temperature of 40 ± 2 °C and relative humidity of 75 ± 5% for a period of six months in a climatic chamber. The captopril samples were collected weekly from the climatic chamber during this period, for a total of 24 spectra. Principal component analysis was performed on the MIR and NIR datasets, and the scores of the principal components were used in the construction of Hotelling's T 2 chart, whereas the squared prediction error (SPE) chart was built with the residuals of the model. In the validation phase, the SPE chart adequately identified expired lots in these two infrared regions. A strategy based on the successive projections algorithm in combination with a multivariate cumulative sum chart was developed to improve the sensitivity of Hotelling's T 2 charts in the MIR region in the monitoring step of the stability study. Our results indicate that vibrational spectroscopy combined with control charts is a useful tool for monitoring changes in the stability pattern of captopril.

Between November 2019 and February 2020, 53 water samples were collected along 430 km of coastline in northeastern Brazil, which was the location of an oil spill that occurred in August 2019. Synchronous fluorescence matrices (SFMs) were acquired to avoid regions affected by Raman Stokes scatterings and second harmonic signals, and then, the SFMs were converted into excitation-emission matrices (EEM) by shear transformation. The matrix coupled with parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) was used in the study of fluorescent components present in the collected waters. A sample collected before the oil spill and another from Florianopolis-SC, 2000 km from the incident, were used as references for nonimpacted waters. In the postspill samples, 4 components were determined, with component 1 (λexc = 225 nm, λem = 475 nm) being associated with humic-like organic matter (terrestrial), component 2 (λexc = 230 nm, λem = 390 nm) being associated with humic-like organic matter (marine), component 3 (λexc = 225/295 nm, λem = 345 nm) being associated with dibenzothiophene-like components also observed in tests with crude oil samples, and component 4 (λexc = 220/280 nm, λem = 340 nm) being associated with a naphthalene-like substance. Principal component analysis (PCA) was performed on the PARAFAC scores. The distribution of samples along the 4 components was observed and compared with the reference samples.

Thiamine (vitamin B1) was converted into a fluorescent thiochrome by oxidation catalyzed by Hg2+ in alkaline medium. The kinetic evolution for this conversion was followed by emission-excitation spectroscopy generating a third-order dataset for each sample, and a four-way data array for a group of samples. The data were analyzed by parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC), which presents the second-order advantage, allowing to estimate the analyte concentrations even in the presence of unknown fluorescent interferences. On the other hand, the second-order advantage does not prevent matrix effects or interferences affecting the reaction mechanism or kinetic properties. For this reasons, standard addition is needed in order to develop a quantitative method for thiamine determination in multivitamin complexes acquired in the local market. The thiochrome emission, excitation and time profiles are correctly isolated in all samples, and the concentration of thiamine in the latter ones was estimated with a deviation lower than 10% of their nominal values. The nuclear graphite, IG-110, was irradiated with and without a compressive load of 5 MPa at ~400 C up to 9.3x1025 n/m2 (E>0.1 MeV.) Following irradiation physical properties were studied to compare the effect of graphite irradiation on microstructure developed under compression and in stress-free condition. Properties included: dimensional change, thermal conductivity, dynamic modulus, and CTE. The effect of stress on open internal porosity was determined through nitrogen adsorption. The IG-110 graphite experienced irradiation-induced creep that is differentiated from irradiation-induced swelling. Irradiation under stress resulted in somewhat greater thermal conductivity and coefficient of thermal expansion. While a significant increase in dynamic modulus occurs, no differentiation between materials irradiated with and without compressive stress was observed. Nitrogen adsorption analysis suggests a difference in pore evolution in the 0.3-40 nm range for graphite irradiated with and without stress, but this evolution is seen to be a small contributor to the overall dimensional change.

Silicon carbide is used as a passive post-irradiation temperature monitor because the irradiation defects will anneal out above the irradiation temperature. The irradiation temperature is determined by measuring a property change after isochronal annealing, i.e., lattice spacing, dimensions, electrical resistivity, thermal diffusivity, or bulk density. However, such methods are time-consuming since the steps involved must be performed in a serial manner. This work presents the use of thermal expansion from continuous dilatometry to calculate the SiC irradiation temperature, which is an automated process requiring minimal setup time. Analysis software was written that performs the calculations to obtain the irradiation temperature and removes possible user-introduced error while standardizing the analysis. This method has been compared to an electrical resistivity and isochronal annealing investigation, and the results revealed agreement of the calculated temperatures. These results show that dilatometry is a reliable and less time-intensive process for determining irradiation temperature from passive SiC thermometry.

Gallium doped Cu 2 ZnSnSe 4 quaternary chalcogenides with and without excess Cu were synthesized by elemental reaction and densified using hot pressing in order to investigate their high temperature transport properties. The resistivity, ρ , and Seebeck coefficient, S , for these materials decrease with increased Ga-doping while both mobility and effective mass increase with Ga doping. The power factor ( S 2 /ρ ) therefore increases with Ga-doping however the highest thermoelectric figure of merit ( ZT = 0.39 at 700 K) was obtained for the composition that had the lowest thermal conductivity. Our results suggest an approach for optimizing the thermoelectric properties of these materials and are part of the continuing effort to explore different quaternary chalcogenide compositions and structure types, as this class of materials continues to be of interest for energy-related applications.

Nuclear-grade silicon carbide (SiC) composite material was examined for mechanical and thermophysical properties following high-dose neutron irradiation in the High Flux Isotope Reactor at a temperature range of 573–1073 K. The material was chemical vapor-infiltrated SiC-matrix composite with a two-dimensional satin weave Hi-Nicalon Type S SiC fiber reinforcement and a multilayered pyrocarbon/SiC interphase. Moderate (1073 K) to very severe (573 K) degradation in mechanical properties was found after irradiation to >70 dpa, whereas no evidence was found for progressive evolution in swelling and thermal conductivity. The swelling was found to recover upon annealing beyond the irradiation temperature, indicating the irradiation temperature, but only to a limited extent. The observed strength degradation is attributed primarily to fiber damage for all irradiation temperatures, particularly a combination of severe fiber degradation and likely interphase damage at relatively low irradiation temperatures.

Captopril, an antihypertensive drug, is seriously susceptible to oxidative degradation by high temperatures, humidity, and by the presence of hygroscopic excipients. The captopril disulfide is the main degradation product. In this study, multivariate control charts have been designed in order to monitor the captopril stability by using Hotelling's T 2 statistics and the Squared Prediction Error (SPE). The High-Performance Liquid Chromatography was the analytical technique used. T 2 and SPE charts performance depend on the pre-processing applied. The scaling methods, particularly the chromatograms weighting in the region of captopril disulfide, highlight the relevant chemical information and sensitize the charts for the detection of minor changes regarding the operating conditions. 52 chromatograms from different batches of captopril in normal operating conditions have been used on T 2 and SPE charts training stage. From 11 samples, seven within their shelf life and four after their expiration date have been used in the validation stage. A stability study has been performed by putting captopril samples in a 40 ± 2 °C temperature and 75 ± 5% relative humidity climatic chamber. Captopril samples have been removed weekly from the climatic chamber in the course of six months. A Principal Components Analysis has been performed in the data set and the scores of the first 3 components have been employed for the Hotelling's T 2 building, while the SPE chart has been designed with the model residuals. The multivariate control charts are sensitized to monitor chromatographic profile changes and captopril stability standard changes.

The impact of elevated temperature charge–discharge cycling on thermal conductivity (K-value) of Lithium Ion Polymer (LIP) cells of various chemistries from three different manufacturers was investigated. These included high voltage (Graphite/LiCoO2:3.0–4.35 V), wide voltage (Si:C/LiCoO2:2.7–4.35 V) and conventional (Graphite/LiCoO2:3.0–4.2 V) chemistries. Investigation results show limited variability within the in-plane and through-plane K-values for the fresh cells with graphite-based anodes from all three suppliers. After 500 cycles at 45 °C, in-plane and through-plane K-values of the high voltage cells reduced less vs. those for the wide voltage cells. Such results suggest that high temperature cycling could have a greater impact on thermal properties of Si:C cells than on the LIP cells with graphite (Gr) anode cells we tested. This difference is due to the excess swelling of Si:C-anode based cells vs. Gr-anode cells during cycling, especially at elevated temperatures. Thermal modeling is used to evaluate the impact of K-value changes, due to cycles at 45 °C, on the cells internal heat propagation under internal short circuit condition that leads to localized meltdown of the separator.

Multivariate linear regression aided by a successive projections algorithm (SPA-MLR) was applied in the evaluation of anodic stripping voltammetry data obtained in the simultaneous determination of metals under conditions where there were significant complications due to interference processes such as the formation of intermetallic compounds and overlapping peaks. Using simulated data, modeled from complex interactions experimentally observed in samples containing Cu and Zn, as well as Co and Zn, it was demonstrated that SPA-MLR selected variables that allow chemical interpretation. This feature was used to make inferences about the underlying electrochemical processes during the simultaneous determination of four metals (Cu, Pb, Cd, and Co) in a concentration range where all responses were complicated by interference processes (10-100 ng mL −1 ). Additionally, the analytical performances of MLR models for quantitative predictions were excellent despite the complexity of the system under study.

We report heat capacity, thermogravimetry and thermal diffusivity data for carbonized mesophase pitch coated LiFePO 4 (LFP) cathodes. The results are compared with the thermophysical properties of a conventional LFP-based electrode having a poly (vinylene) difluoride (PVDF) binder and conductive carbon diluents. The measured heat capacity of LFP as a function of temperature is in good agreement with model calculations based on first-principles methods. Thermal diffusivity data indicate that the mesophase pitch coated LFP compositions have a factor of two higher thermal diffusivity than the conventional electrode composition, suggesting that the coatings improve heat transfer. In the presence of an electrolyte mixture (1.2 M lithium hexa-fluorophosphate), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis of the LFP–pitch composite and LFP–PVDF–carbon composites showed similar onset temperature and heat evolution.

A simple and rapid method to determine acesulfame-K and aspartame simultaneously in power sweeteners, without pretreatment was proposed. This method employs linear sweep voltammetry assisted with multivariate calibration tools, in order to resolve the overlapping signals of both analytes. Multivariate calibration models were made using a Partial Last Square (PLS) algorithm. In order to increase sensitivity a rotating disk electrode (RDE) at 8000 rpm was used. The sample throughput was 90 samples h − 1 . The obtained results are in good agreement with that obtained with HPLC method. This paper proposed an alternative methodology for improving the quality control of power sweeteners.

This paper describes the determination and evaluation of the mineral composition (calcium, magnesium, iron, manganese and zinc) of kale (Brassica oleracea L. var. acephala DC.) grown in soils within four cities in Bahia State, Brazil. The sampling process was performed during the summer and winter. Samples were digested with concentrated nitric acid and a digestion pump. Analyses were performed with inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP OES) and the accuracy was confirmed with a certified reference material of apple leaves furnished by the National Institute of Standard and Technology. Principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) revealed different mineral compositions of the samples collected in the summer and winter. Samples collected in the winter have a higher concentration of micronutrients (iron, zinc and manganese) and macronutrients (calcium and magnesium). The average contents (wet weight and mg per 100 g) for the winter and summer were 551 and 535 for calcium; 117 and 106 for magnesium; 2.13 and 1.48 for iron; 2.63 and 1.95 for zinc and 2.05 and 1.34 for manganese, respectively. These results are in agreement with values previously reported in the literature.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the combined effect of stress and temperature on the microstructure of air plasma-sprayed 7 wt.% Y{sub 2}O{sub 3}-ZrO{sub 2} thermal barrier coatings, and relate microstructural changes to the thermal conductivity, k{sub th}. To simulate TBC service conditions, stand-alone tubes of YSZ were stress relaxed, starting from a compressive stress of 60 MPa, at temperatures of 1000 C or 1200 C. The duration of the stress relaxation test was either 5 min or 3 h. Detailed scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Porod's specific surface area (SSA) analysis of small angle neutron scattering (SANS) results were used to determine which void systems, either interlamellar pores or intralamellar cracks, contributed to the observed relaxation of stress in the coatings. SEM investigations revealed closure of intralamellar cracks located perpendicular to the stress direction. For thinner YSZ coatings, SANS measurements indicated a statistically significant reduction in the total SSA and SSA associated with intralamellar cracks after stress relaxation at the times, temperatures, and stress investigated compared to those samples that were exposed to identical times and temperatures, but no stress. The SSA associated with the interlamellar pores was not significantly smaller in YSZ coatings stress relaxed frommore » 60 MPa at 1200 C for 3 h compared to as-sprayed coatings. The thermal conductivity of the coatings was strongly influenced by stress, with increases in kth observed after only 5 min at 60 MPa and 1200 C. Reductions in the total SSA were directly linked to increases in k{sub th}.« less

In this work, the mineral composition of fresh bovine milk obtained from the milk-producing areas of the Brazilian State of Sergipe was examined. A dry-ashed digestion method and the ICP OES technique were used for the quantification of mineral elements ( e.g. , Ca, Mg, K, Na, P, Sr and Zn) in 27 samples of milk collected from properties located in milk-producing areas around Nossa Senhora da Gloria. The following ranges of values (% m/v) were obtained: 0.063 to 0.117 for Ca; 0.060 to 0.114 for P; 0.024 to 0.064 for Na; and 0.087 to 0.164 for K. The ranges of values (mg L − 1 ) for the other mineral elements were also found: 0.68 to 1.89 for Sr; 2.46 to 5.73 for Zn; and 54.2 to 109.9 for Mg. Additionally, the exploratory evaluation of the 27 milk samples was performed using principal component analysis (PCA) involving seven variables dealing with the effect of different management systems (conventional and organic) on milk composition. The results show that there are indeed differences between the mineral composition of milk from properties that use organic practices and those that use conventional management practices.

Copper–silicon carbide composites were fabricated by electrodeposition of copper into pores of wood-derived silicon carbide, a ceramic with a microstructure that can be tailored via the use of different wood precursors. Thermal conductivity values were determined using flash diffusivity at temperatures from 0 to 900 °C. Thermal conductivities of up to 202 W/mK at 0 °C and 148W/mK at 900 °C were achieved. Object-oriented finite-element analysis (OOF) modeling was used to understand the heat flux distributions throughout the microstructures. OOF was also used to calculate the effective thermal conductivity, which correlated well with experimentally-determined values for axially-oriented composites. In addition, OOF was used to predict effective conductivity values and heat flux distributions for transversely-oriented composites.

The phase evolution occurring during the reaction between corrosive V{sub 2}O{sub 5} (T{sub m} = 690 C) and a plasma-sprayed 7 wt.% Y{sub 2}O{sub 3}ZrO{sub 2} (YSZ) coating from 700 to 900 C has been investigated in situ by X-ray diffraction. The temperature and time of interaction between the V{sub 2}O{sub 5} and YSZ coating determines the phases observed. Between 700 and 750 C, reaction products of ZrV{sub 2}O{sub 7} and YVO{sub 4} were observed within minutes of reaching the test temperature. m-ZrO{sub 2} was observed after 220 and 60 min at 700 and 750 C, respectively. The simultaneous formation of both ZrV{sub 2}O{sub 7} and YVO{sub 4} at the beginning of the reaction along with the delay of the m-ZrO{sub 2} formation suggests similar reactivity between both Zr and Y with V{sub 2}O{sub 5}. The weight percent of the ZrV{sub 2}O{sub 7} phase began to diminish after 150 and 60 min at 700 and 750 C, respectively. For reaction temperatures of 800 and 900 C, there is a rapid decrease in the amount of t{prime}-ZrO{sub 2} and a rapid increase in the amount of m-ZrO{sub 2} with reaction time. YVO{sub 4} was also observed at these reaction temperatures. SEMmore » and TEM microstructural observations confirmed the phases detected from the in situ XRD experiments. Reactions between YSZ and V{sub 2}O{sub 5} suggest that the formation of a liquid phase due to the high solubility of both zirconia and yttria in vanadia is the dominate mechanism that damages the coating. The thermal conductivity of a plasma-sprayed YSZ coating reacted with up to 1 wt.% V{sub 2}O{sub 5} did not significantly change due to the small volume affected.« less

An enzymatic flow-batch system with spectrophotometric detection was developed for simultaneous determination of levodopa [(S)-2 amino-3-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)propionic acid] and carbidopa [(S)-3-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-2-hydrazino-2-methylpropionic acid] in pharmaceutical preparations. The data were analysed by univariate method, partial least squares (PLS) and a novel variable selection for multiple lineal regression (MLR), the successive projections algorithm (SPA). The enzyme polyphenol oxidase (PPO; EC 1.14.18.1) obtained from Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam. was used to oxidize both analytes to their respective dopaquinones, which presented a strong absorption between 295 and 540 nm. The statistical parameters (RMSE and correlation coefficient) calculated after the PLS in the spectral region between 295 and 540 nm and MLR-SPA application were appropriate for levodopa and carbidopa. A comparative study of univariate, PLS, in different ranges, and MLR-SPA chemometrics models, was carried out by applying the elliptical joint confidence region (EJCR) test. The results were satisfactory for PLS in the spectral region between 295 and 540 nm and for MLR-SPA. Tablets of commercial samples were analysed and the results obtained are in close agreement with both, spectrophotometric and HPLC pharmacopeia methods. The sample throughput was 18 h-1.
