Abstract

Herein, we proposed a cascade refrigerant system with R1270 and carbon dioxide refrigerants. The natural refrigerant R1270 was adopted in the high-temperature circuit to replace NH3 and R290. A prototype cascade refrigerant system with two semi-hermetic piston compressors was manufactured, and its performance was investigated experimentally. The results establish R1270 as a good alternative in the high-temperature circuit of the cascade refrigerant system. Moreover, with a constant condensation and evaporation temperature of cascade system, as the R1270 evaporation temperature was decreased (from −7 °C to −19 °C), the coefficient of performance (COP) of the cascade system increased. The isentropic efficiency of R1270 compressor decreased from 78.5% to 74.7% when the R1270 evaporation temperature increased from −19 °C to −7 °C.

Abstract

Carbonaceous materials have considerable potential as effective cathode catalysts due to their low cost and high oxygen reduced reaction (ORR) activity. However, current approaches face significant challenges, such as the fall-off of the catalyst and mass transfer inhibition as the catalyst loading increases. In this study, a multi-cathode-based photocatalytic fuel cell (PFC) was developed for maintaining a high cathode catalyst loading and simultaneously enhancing the mass transfer to improve the catalytic activity. Under identical high loading, the cathode configuration would significantly influence the power production of the PFC. The maximum power of the multi-cathode PFC was 50% and 53% higher than those of the Pt cathode and single-cathode PFCs, respectively. Meanwhile, the removal efficiency of methyl orange (MO) in the multi-cathode PFC was also higher than that in the single-cathode PFC. These results were attributed to the relatively large effective area and reduced transfer resistance of electrons and oxygen, owing to the multi-cathode system. In addition, a batch of experiments involving different parameters (such as pH, rotating speed, and initial MO concentration) was performed to obtain the optimal parameter conditions. Considering the high cost of Pt, all the tests indicated that the PFC with the multi-cathode configuration efficiently enhanced the power generation and simultaneously facilitated the removal of organic pollutants.

Abstract

A coupling system combining Fenton process with dual rotating disk photocatalytic fuel cell (PFC) was developed to improve methyl orange (MO) removal and simultaneous electricity production, in which the (NH4)3PO4 modified bamboo charcoal (BC) was acted as cathode catalyst. Due to the existence of the N and P containing functional groups on the BC catalyst and the rotating electrode, the hybrid system could efficiently reduce oxygen to generate some hydroxyl radical and related species for MO removal. Therefore, Fenton-PFC-BC with rotation system showed a superior MO removal efficiency of 85%, 2.4 times higher than that in the traditional Fenton-PFC-Pt with aeration system. The radicals inhibition assays and hydrogen peroxide quantitative studies revealed that HO , h+ and O2− were primarily responsible for MO degradation. Furthermore, the MO removal performance for Fenton-PFC-BC with rotation system was investigated at different parameters (such as rotating speed, BC loading, pH and ferrous ion concentration) to obtain optimal operation conditions. Results of energy analysis and reusability experiment showed that the proposed Fenton-PFC-BC with rotation system provided a cost-effective and stable method for the organic degradation and energy recovery.

Abstract

A new composite anode material, possessing an appropriate mechanical strength, was fabricated by depositing carbon black on the loofah sponge matrix surface. Carbon black was oxidized in nitric acid (HNO 3 ) and hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), respectively, to increase electrochemical properties before starting deposition. Microbial fuel cell (MFC) with the H 2 O 2 treated carbon black anode achieved the maximum power density of 61.7 ± 0.6 W/m 3 , which was higher than one decorated with the HNO 3 treated or untreated carbon black. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observation showed a compact bacterial attachment on the H 2 O 2 treated carbon black surface. Results of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and Tafel plots indicated a fast electron transfer rate between the H 2 O 2 pre-treatment of carbon black and electrochemically active bacteria (EAB). Therefore, the H 2 O 2 treated carbon black-loofah sponge anode was promising for MFC application in terms of its superior performance, straightforward fabrication method and ultra-low cost.
