19. Efficiency of different solarization-based ecological soil treatments on the control of Fusarium wilt and their impacts on the soil microbial community

Abstract

Fusarium wilt is considered one of the most destructive soil-borne diseases. Solarization-based soil treatments for the control of Fusarium wilt are considered ecological and are widely used. In this study, differences in the efficiency of Fusarium wilt control and the impact on the soil microbial community were investigated among three types of solarization-based soil treatments, including soil solarization (SS), soil solarization with flooding (SS-F), and soil solarization with organic amendment and flooding (SS-OA-F). The SS and SS-F treatments partially killed the Fusarium oxysporum over the first 6 days. However, these treatments had no or little effect on the deteriorated soil environment and soil microbial community. The remaining Fusarium oxysporum proliferated quickly after cucumber planting, and serious Fusarium wilt still occurred in the SS and SS-F treatments at the second planting. SS-OA-F significantly improved the efficiency of Fusarium wilt control. Soil Fusarium oxysporum were killed in greater numbers in a shorter time by SS-OA-F. The deteriorated soil environment was remediated over the 15-day treatment process due to increases in the acidified soil pH and reductions of the soil electrical conductivity. SS-OA-F also had a notably impact on the soil microbial community. The proportion of anaerobic microorganisms greatly increased, and that of aerobic microorganisms greatly decreased in SS-OA-F soil. The proliferation of soil Fusarium oxysporum was significantly inhibited after the SS-OA-F treatment. However, different organic matter types used in SS-OA-F resulted in different suppression durations. Compared with glucose, Medicago sativa amendment increased the soil bacterial diversity and prolonged the suppression duration.

20. NiAlHf Coating on TiAl Substrate Prepared by EB-PVD

Abstract

In order to improve the oxidation resistance of TiAl substrate at high temperatures, NiAlHf coating was prepared by electron beam physical vapor deposition (EB-PVD) on the TiAl substrate. According to the measured mass gain curves, the effect of NiAlHf coating on the oxidation behavior of TiAl substrate was studied at 900, 950 and 1000 °C. X-ray diffraction (XRD) was employed to identify the phases of the surfaces at different states. The XRD results show that β-NiAl is formed after deposition and element Hf is found to be dissolved into it. A dense Al 2 O 3 protection film is formed on the coating surface after 950 °C oxidation. Scanning electron morphology (SEM) with energy dispersive spectrum (EDS) was employed to characterize the morphology and element distribution at the cross-section and the surface. During oxidation, elements diffusion occurs at the interface between the substrate and the coating. With increasing of oxidation duration, the thickness of the coating decreases and the diffusion zone changes rapidly. Micro-hardness was used to characterize the coating toughness. Its micro-hardness is about HV7050 MPa. The results show that NiAlHf coating can improve the substrate oxidation resistance at high temperatures.

Abstract

A two-stage composting experiment was performed to utilize pig manure for producing maggots as feed supplement and organic fertilizer. Seven-day composting of 1.8 ton fresh manure inoculated with 9 kg mixture of housefly neonates and wheat bran produced 193 kg aging maggots, followed by 12 week composting to maturity. Reaching the thermophilic phase and final maturity faster was characteristic of the maggot-treated compost compared with the same-size natural compost. Upon the transit of the maggot-treated compost to the second stage, the composting temperature maintained around 55 °C for 9 days and the moisture decreased to ∼40%. Moreover, higher pH, faster detoxification and different activity patterns for some microbial enzymes were observed. There was a strong material loss (35% water-soluble carbon and 16% total nitrogen) caused by the maggot culture in the first stage. Our results highlight a higher economic value of pig manure achieved through the two-stage composting without bulking agents.
