Abstract

We establish a 3-parameter family of integral identities to be used on a class of theories possessing solitons with spherical symmetry in $d$ spatial dimensions. The construction provides five boundary charges that are related to certain integrals of the profile functions of the solitons in question. The framework is quite generic and we give examples of both topological defects (like vortices and monopoles) and topological textures (like Skyrmions) in 2 and 3 dimensions. The class of theories considered here is based on a kinetic term and three functionals often encountered in reduced Lagrangians for solitons. One particularly interesting case provides a generalization of the well-known Pohozaev identity. Our construction, however, is fundamentally different from scaling arguments behind Derrick's theorem and virial relations. Abstract

We present a series of existence theorems for multiple vortex solutions in the Gudnason model of the ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric field theory where non-Abelian gauge fields are governed by the pure Chern--Simons dynamics at dual levels and realized as the solutions of a system of elliptic equations with exponential nonlinearity over two-dimensional domains. In the full plane situation, our method utilizes a minimization approach, and in the doubly periodic situation, we employ an-inequality constrained minimization approach. In the latter case, we also obtain sufficient conditions under which we show that there exist at least two gauge-distinct solutions for any prescribed distribution of vortices. In other words, there are distinct solutions with identical vortex distribution, energy, and electric and magnetic charges., Comment: 39 pages

Abstract

Regarding the Skyrme–Faddeev model on R 3 as a CP 1 sigma model, we propose C P n sigma models on R 2 n + 1 as generalisations which may support finite energy Hopfion solutions in these dimensions. The topological charge stabilising these field configurations is the Chern–Simons charge, namely the volume integral of the Chern–Simons density which has a local expression in terms of the composite connection and curvature of the CP n field. It turns out that subject to the sigma model constraint, this density is a total divergence. We prove the existence of a topological lower bound on the energy, which, as in the Vakulenko–Kapitansky case in R 3 , is a fractional power of the topological charge, depending on n . The numerical construction of the simplest ring shaped un-knot Hopfion on R 5 is also discussed.

Abstract

A fundamental subject in ecology is to understand how an ecosystem responds to its environmental changes. The purpose of this paper is to study the desertification and vegetation pattern formation phenomena and understand the dependence of the biomass density B of vegetation on the level of available environmental water resources, controlled by a water supply rate parameter R , which is governed by a coupled system of nonlinear parabolic equations in a mathematical model proposed recently by Shnerb, Sarah, Lavee, and Solomon. It is shown that, when R is below the death rate μ of the vegetation in the absence of water, the solution evolving from any initial state approaches exponentially fast the desert state characterized by B = 0 ; when R is above μ , the solution evolves into a green vegetation state characterized by B ⁄ → 0 as time t → ∞ . In the flower-pot limit where the system becomes a system of ordinary differential equations, it is shown that nontrivial periodic vegetation states exist provided that the water supply rate R is a periodic function and maintains a suitable average level. Furthermore, some conservation laws relating the asymptotic values of the vegetation biomass B and available water density W are also obtained.

Abstract

By means of variational methods, in this paper, we establish sharp existence results for solutions of the master equations governing ‘fractional multiple vortices.’ In the doubly periodic situation, the conditions for existence are both necessary and sufficient and give the upper bounds for the vortex numbers in terms of the size of the periodic cell domain. In the planar situation, there is no restriction on the vortex numbers. In both situations, the solutions are uniquely determined by the prescribed locations and the local winding numbers of the vortices.

Abstract

A search is performed for heavy Majorana neutrinos (N) using an event signature defined by two like-sign charged leptons of the same flavour and two jets. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 inverse femtobarns of pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV collected with the CMS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. No excess of events is observed beyond the expected standard model background and therefore upper limits are set on the square of the mixing element, abs(V[ell N]) squared, for ell = e, mu, as a function of Majorana neutrino mass. These are the first direct upper limits on the heavy Majorana-neutrino mixing for m[N] > 90 GeV.

Abstract

We prove the existence of electrically and magnetically charged particlelike static solutions, known as dyons, in the minimally gauged Skyrme model developed by Brihaye, Hartmann, and Tchrakian. The solutions are spherically symmetric, depend on two continuous parameters, and carry unit monopole and magnetic charges but continuous Skyrme charge and non-quantized electric charge induced from the 't Hooft electromagnetism. The problem amounts to obtaining a finite-energy critical point of an indefinite action functional, arising from the presence of electricity and the Minkowski spacetime signature. The difficulty with the absence of the Higgs field is overcome by achieving suitable strong convergence and obtaining uniform decay estimates at singular boundary points so that the negative sector of the action functional becomes tractable., 24 pages

Abstract

Vortices in non-Abelian gauge field theory play essential roles in the mechanism of color confinement and are governed by systems of nonlinear elliptic equations of complicated structure. In this paper, we present a series of sharp existence and uniqueness theorems for multiple vortex solutions of the non-Abelian BPS equations over R 2 and on a doubly periodic domain. Our methods are based on calculus of variations which may be used to analyze more extended problems. The necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a unique solution in the doubly periodic situation are expressed in terms of physical parameters involved explicitly.

Abstract

A general quantitative model for ontogenetic growth of organisms was derived by West et al. based on fundamental principles for the allocation of metabolic energy in which a universal parameterless growth curve was established in terms of the biomass ratio and a dimensionless biological time. This model was then extended by Guiot et al. to account for the growth of tumors in vivo in which the fractional scaling exponent p becomes a dynamic parameter depending on time t . In this paper, we present a method that may be used effectively to construct a generalized universal growth curve for such a growth law model with an arbitrary dynamically varying fractional exponent. As by-products of this method, we show that the assumption that a biological time variable flows forward in the universal curve allows us to predict the behavior of p with regard to the developmental stages of organisms characterized by body mass which is consistent with the findings of Guiot et al. based on biomedical data, and that, the universal curve is independent of the properties of p as a function of t . We also consider the situation when time increases discretely and the fractional scaling exponent is periodic. We observe the familiar, but superimposed, period-doubling and transition-to-chaos phenomenon.

Abstract

We prove the existence of topological vortices in a relativistic self-dual Abelian Chern–Simons theory with two Higgs particles and two gauge fields through a study of a coupled system of two nonlinear elliptic equations over R2. We present two approaches to prove existence of solutions on bounded domains: via minimization of an indefinite functional and via a fixed point argument. We then show that we may pass to the full R2 limit from the bounded-domain solutions to obtain a topological solution in R2.

Abstract

We present a family of static knotted soliton energy functionals governing the configuration maps from the Euclidean space R 4 n − 1 into the unit sphere S 2 n so that the knot charges are naturally represented by the Hopf invariants in the homotopy group π 4 n − 1 ( S 2 n ) and the special case n = 1 recovers the classical Faddeev knot energy. We establish the general result that the minimum energy or the knot mass E N of knotted solitons of the Hopf charge N satisfies the universal fractional-exponent growth law E N ∼ | N | ( 4 n − 1 ) / 4 n , in which the fractional exponent depends only on the dimensions of the domain and range spaces of the configuration maps but does not depend on the detailed structure of the knot energy.

Abstract

In this paper, we present a mathematical analysis for the phonon-dominated multiband isotropic and anisotropic BCS gap equations at any finite temperature T. We establish the existence of a critical temperature T c so that, when T T c , there exists a unique positive gap solution, representing the superconducting phase; when T > T c , the only nonnegative gap solution is the zero solution, representing the normal phase. Furthermore, when T = T c , we prove that the only gap solution is the zero solution and that the positive gap solution depend on the temperature T T c monotonically and continuously. In particular, as T → T c , the gap solution tends to zero, which enables us to determine the critical temperature T c . In the isotropic case where the entries of the interaction matrix K are all constants, we are able to derive an elegant T c equation which says that T c depends only on the largest positive eigenvalue of K but does not depend on the other details of K. In the anisotropic case, we may derive a similar T c equation in the context of the Markowitz–Kadanoff model and we prove that the presence of anisotropic fluctuations enhances T c as in the single-band case. A special consequence of these results is that the half-unity exponent isotope effect may rigorously be proved in the multiband BCS theory, isotropic or anisotropic.

When the underlying space is a closed surface, we prove the existence and uniqueness of a solution under a necessary and sufficient condition. When the space is R2, we establish the existence, uniqueness and sharp decay estimates for a solution.

Abstract

We prove the existence and uniqueness of a spherically symmetric monopole solution in the Abelian model of Lee and Weinberg in the BPS limit. The solution carries finite energy and unit charge and generalizes the classical SU (2) BPS monopole. We also prove an existence theorem for the model with a general Higgs field-dependent mass term and establish the equivalence of the second-order equations of motion and the first-order Bogomol'nyi equations within radial symmetry assumption and BPS limit. Our methods have wide applicability in other monopole problems.

Abstract

We establish the existence of multivortices arising in the self-dual phase of the standard model of Weinberg-Salam, and its two-Higgs-doublet extension, in the unified theory of electromagnetic and weak interactions. For the standard model, we prove the existence of solutions in a periodic lattice domain and study the effect of the gravitational coupling. We find an important connection of these self-dual vortices and the cosmological constant problem: the cosmological constant Λ may be written explictly in terms of several fundamental parameters in electroweak theory and the two-dimensional surface on which the vortices reside becomes noncomplete. We then prove that such a gravitational background leads to the existence of finite-energy vortices on the full plane with a non-Abelian nature. For the extended electroweak model with two Higgs doublets, we solve the self-dual equations completely. For the periodic case, we prove an existence and uniqueness theorem under a necessary and sufficient condition. This result reveals some exact restrictions to the vortex charges. For the problem on the entire plane, we obtain existence, uniqueness, sharp decay estimates, and quantized fluxes.

We study the system of elliptic equations[formula]defined over a doubly-periodic domain in R 2 , where the coefficients are specifically given by the physical model. This system arises in a self-dual non-relativistic Maxwell–Chern–Simons theory coupled with a neutral scalar field in (2+1)-dimensional spacetime and the solutions represent multivortices known as condensates. Our existence results reveal that the number of vortices confined in a periodic cell domain can be arbitrary and that the Chern–Simons coupling parameter imposes no restriction to the existence of solutions.

Abstract

This paper establishes the existence of regular stationary solutions of the coupled Einstein-matter-gauge equations with a cylindrical symmetry. Such solutions are called cosmic strings or gravitational vortices and are believed to have important implications in cosmology and quantum physics. It is shown that for a prescribed string location with a string or winding number below an explicit barrier, the system possesses a continuous family of distinct finite-energy solution configurations. The proof of the main existence theorem relies on a special shooting method. Power-type decay estimates at spatial infinity are also obtained.

Abstract

In this paper a globally convergent computational scheme is established to approximate a topological multivortex solution in the recently discovered self-dual Chern-Simons theory in R 2 . Our method which is constructive and numerically efficient finds the most superconducting solution in the sense that its Higgs field has the largest possible magnitude. The method consists of two steps: first one obtains by a convergent monotone iterative algorithm a suitable solution of the bounded domain equations and then one takes the large domain limit and approximates the full piane solutions. It is shown that with a special choice of the initial guess function, the approximation sequence approaches exponentially fast a solution in R 2 . The convergence rate implies that the truncation errors away from local regions are insignificant.

Abstract

This paper presents a method for computing the physical states in superconducting thin films under the influence of a parallel uniform external magnetic field. The governing equations are the Ginzburg-Landau equations which in general possess multiple solutions and the physical states are those which minimize the total energy. In our approach the energy functional is used to generate a gradient flow and the physical states are obtained in the large time limit. The numerical results completely verify the Meissner effect and the fine structure of the solutions exhibits the occurrence of a symmetric nucleation of superconductivity at intermediate fields.
