Abstract

First evidence of a structure in the $J/\psi{\Lambda}$ invariant mass distribution is obtained from an amplitude analysis of$\Xi_b^-{\rightarrow}J/\psi{\Lambda}K^-$ decays. The observed structure is consistent with being due to a charmonium pentaquark with strangeness with a significance of $3.1\sigma$ including systematic uncertainties and look-elsewhere effect. Its mass and width are determined to be $4458.8\pm2.9^{+4.7}_{-1.1}$ MeV and $17.3\pm6.5^{+8.0}_{-5.7}$ MeV, respectively, where the quoted uncertainties are statistical and systematic. The structure is also consistent with being due to two resonances. In addition, the narrow excited $\Xi^-$ states, $\Xi(1690)^-$ and $\Xi(1820)^-$, are seen for the first time in a $\Xi^-_b$ decay, and their masses and widths are measured with improved precision. The analysis is performed using $pp$ collision data corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 9 fb$^{-1}$, collected with the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV.

Abstract

Background Diet affects the human gastrointestinal microbiota. Blood and urine samples have been used to determine nutritional biomarkers. However, there is a dearth of knowledge on the utility of fecal biomarkers, including microbes, as biomarkers of food intake. Objectives This study aimed to identify a compact set of fecal microbial biomarkers of food intake with high predictive accuracy. Methods Data were aggregated from 5 controlled feeding studies in metabolically healthy adults (n = 285; 21–75 y; BMI 19–59 kg/m2; 340 data observations) that studied the impact of specific foods (almonds, avocados, broccoli, walnuts, and whole-grain barley and whole-grain oats) on the human gastrointestinal microbiota. Fecal DNA was sequenced using 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing. Marginal screening was performed on all species-level taxa to examine the differences between the 6 foods and their respective controls. The top 20 species were selected and pooled together to predict study food consumption using a random forest model and out-of-bag estimation. The number of taxa was further decreased based on variable importance scores to determine the most compact, yet accurate feature set. Results Using the change in relative abundance of the 22 taxa remaining after feature selection, the overall model classification accuracy of all 6 foods was 70%. Collapsing barley and oats into 1 grains category increased the model accuracy to 77% with 23 unique taxa. Overall model accuracy was 85% using 15 unique taxa when classifying almonds (76% accurate), avocados (88% accurate), walnuts (72% accurate), and whole grains (96% accurate). Additional statistical validation was conducted to confirm that the model was predictive of specific food intake and not the studies themselves. Conclusions Food consumption by healthy adults can be predicted using fecal bacteria as biomarkers. The fecal microbiota may provide useful fidelity measures to ascertain nutrition study compliance.

Abstract

High-volumetric-energy-density lithium-ion batteries require anode material with a suitable redox potential, a small surface area, and facile kinetics at both single-particle and electrode level. Here a family of coarse-grained molybdenum substituted titanium niobium oxides Mo[subscript x]Ti[subscript 1−x]Nb[subscript 2]O[subscript 7+y] (single crystals with 1~2 μm size) underwent hydrogen reduction treatment to improve electronic conduction was synthesized, which is able to stably deliver a capacity of 158.5 mAh g[superscript −1] at 6,000 mA g[superscript −1] (65.2 % retention with respect to its capacity at 100 mA g[superscript −1] ) and 175 mAh g[superscript −1] (73 % capacity retention over 500 cycles) at 2,000 mA g[superscript −1], respectively. Via careful in situ electrochemical characterizations, we identified the kinetic bottleneck that limits their high-rate applications to be mainly ohmic loss at the electrode level (which mostly concerns electron transport in the composite electrodes) rather than non-ohmic loss (which mostly concerns Li+ lattice diffusion within individual particles). Such a kinetic problem was efficiently relieved by simple treatments of Mo substitution and gas-phase reduction, which enable full cells with high electrode density, and high volumetric energy/power densities. Our work highlights the importance of diagnosis, so that modifications could be made specifically to improve full-cell performance.

Abstract

Biodegradable magnesium alloys are promising candidates for use in biomedical applications. However, degradable particles (DPs) derived from Mg-based alloys have been observed in tissue in proximity to sites of implantation, which might result in unexpected effects. Although previous in vitro studies have found that macrophages can take up DPs, little is known about the potential phagocytic pathway and the mechanism that processes DPs in cells. Additionally, it is necessary to estimate the potential bioeffects of DPs on macrophages. Thus, in this study, DPs were generated from a Mg-2.1Nd-0.2Zn-0.5Zr alloy (JDBM) by an electrochemical method, and then macrophages were incubated with the DPs to reveal the potential impact. The results showed that the cell viability of macrophages decreased in a concentration-dependent manner in the presence of DPs due to effects of an apoptotic pathway. However, the DPs were phagocytosed into the cytoplasm of macrophages and further degraded in phagolysosomes, which comprised lysosomes and phagosomes, by heterophagy instead of autophagy. Furthermore, several pro-inflammatory cytokines in macrophages were upregulated by DPs through the induction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to show that DPs derived from a Mg-based alloy are consistently degraded in phagolysosomes after phagocytosis by macrophages via heterophagy, which results in an inflammatory response owing to ROS overproduction. Thus, our research has increased the knowledge of the metabolism of biodegradable Mg metal, which will contribute to an understanding of the health effects of biodegradable magnesium metal implants used for tissue repair. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Biomedical degradable Mg-based alloys have great promise in applied medicine. Although previous studies have found that macrophages can uptake degradable particles (DPs) in vitro and observed in the sites of implantation in vivoin vivo, few studies have been carried out on the potential bioeffects relationship between DPs and macrophages. In this study, we analyzed the bioeffects of DPs derived from a Mg-based alloy on the macrophages. We illustrated that the DPs were size-dependently engulfed by macrophages via heterophagy and further degraded in the phagolysosome rather than autophagosome. Furthermore, DPs were able to induce a slight inflammatory response in macrophages by inducing ROS production. Thus, our research enhances the knowledge of the interaction between DPs of Mg-based alloy and cells, and offers a new perspective regarding the use of biodegradable alloys.

Abstract

Chlorogenic acid (CA), also known as 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid, is a dietary phenolic acid produced by various plant species. CA, is the most ubiquitous compound among the phenolic acid group, is also present in tea and green coffee extracts. Its consumption reduces the risk of numerous diseases as validated by preclinical and clinical studies. CA possesses a wide range of pharmacological properties, such as hepatoprotective, antimicrobial, immunomodulatory, antioxidant, antidiabetic, and anticancer activities. It has been extensively used in the food, chemical, medicine, and health care industries. Available reports revealed that CA can exert anticancer activity by inhibiting the cell cycle, triggering apoptosis, and suppressing the proliferation of cancer cells. It upregulates the expression of nuclear factor of activated T cells 2 (NFATC2) and NFATC3 genes involved in immune pathway and downregulates B cell-specific moloney murine leukemia virus integration site 1 protein and SRY-box transcription factor 2 gene expression to facilitate tumor cell destruction. It promotes intracellular DNA impairment and topoisomerase I- and topoisomerase-II-DNA complex formation that perform a key function in apoptosis. In addition, CA has been documented to be an effective natural anticancer drug and was approved by the China Food and Drug Administration. Several previously published reports have provided fragmented summary of various anticancer activities of CA. Therefore, this review aims to deliver up-to-date and comprehensive assessment about the natural sources of CA, its bioavailability, metabolism, and anticancer property with an emphasis on the molecular mechanisms associated with several signaling pathways in tumor cells.

Abstract

Natural products with diverse structures and significant biological activities are essential sources of drug lead compounds, and play an important role in the research and development of innovative drugs. Cage-like compounds have various structures and are widely distributed in nature, especially caged xanthones isolated from Garcinia genus, paeoniflorin and its derivatives isolated from Paeonia lactiflora Pall, tetrodotoxin (TTX) and its derivatives, and so on. In recent years, the development and utilization of cage-like compounds have been a research hotspot in chemistry, biology and other fields due to their special structures and remarkable biological activities. In this review, we mainly summarized the cage-like compounds with various structures found and isolated from natural drugs since 1956, summarized its broad biological activities, and introduced the progress in the biosynthesis of some compounds, so as to provide a reference for the discovery of more novel compounds, and the development and application of innovative drugs.

Abstract

The objective of this randomized controlled experimental study was to determine the intervention effect of group interpersonal psychotherapy (G-IPT) for aggression and social support among Chinese first-grade university students.Through stratified random sampling, 1469 students, aged 18-19 years, were enrolled. Participants whose score achieved the aggressive evaluation standard were selected and then 60 participants were randomly divided into 2 groups: G-IPT and control. The participants in the G-IPT group received 16 sessions of treatment, whereas the participants in the control group did not receive any intervention. All participants completed the assessment three times: before, after, and tracking.The results showed that the total score and the scores of all subscales of aggression dropped significantly (P 0.01). Also, the total score and the scores of objective support and utilization degree of social support increased significantly (P 0.05).G-IPT was effective in treating aggression and improving social support level, and the effect was stable.

Abstract

A Kelvin–Helmholtz instability (KHI) is a fundamental physical process of fluids and magnetized plasma. We report the experimental formation of a KHI produced by intense laser-driven thin plastic foils. For an external magnetic field in different directions, the KHI shows different evolutionary features. A theoretical derivation shows that an external magnetic field has a stronger effect on KHI growth when its component is perpendicular to the plasma flow. A linear evolutionary stage of the KHI is captured by optimizing the target design, which is reproduced by FLASH simulation.

Abstract

The G-rich Pu39 region of the P1 promoter of the oncogene BCL-2, an apoptosis regulator, can fold into multiple G-quadruplex (G4) structures. Bcl2-2345 and Bcl2-1245 are two major G4 species forming with high thermal stability and distinct topologies in the Pu39 region, but their folding/unfolding kinetics have not yet been investigated. Here, we used magnetic tweezers to measure the mechanical stability and the folding/unfolding kinetics of the Bcl2-2345 and Bcl2-1245 G4 structures. We report that the hybrid-stranded Bcl2-2345 G4 had a lower mechanical stability than the parallel-stranded Bcl2-1245 G4. We observed that the Bcl2-2345 G4 is a kinetically favored structure, whereas the Bcl2-1245 G4, with a slow unfolding rate, may function as a kinetic barrier for transcription. We also determined that in addition to the Bcl2-2345 and Bcl2-1245 G4s, other stable DNA secondary structures, such as a hybrid-stranded Bcl2-1234 G4, can also form in the Pu39 sequence. The characterization of the folding/unfolding kinetics of specific G4s reported here sheds light on the participation of G4s during gene transcription and provides information for designing G4-targeting small molecules that could modulate BCL-2 gene expression.

40. High-quality full-color carbon quantum dots synthesized under an unprecedentedly mild condition

Abstract

Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are highly promising to be applied in light-emitting, chemosensing, and other cutting-edge domains. Herein, we successfully fabricate high-quality full-color CQDs under unprecedentedly low temperature and pressure (85°C, 1.88 bar). Stable and narrow fluorescent emissions ranging from blue to green and red light were realized by simple amine engineering, which were further mixed into white-light CQDs with the absolute photoluminescent quantum yield reaching 19.2%. The average mass yield of the CQDs reached 69.0%. The optical performances demonstrated that the CQDs possessed uniform luminescent centers and dominant radiative decay channels. Component analysis further suggested that dehydrated condensation between carboxyl and amine groups directed the growth of the CQDs. By utilizing the CQDs, full-color light-emitting diodes and logic gate sensors were developed. This study paves an important step for promoting the application of CQDs by providing an energy-efficient, safe, and productive synthetic strategy.

Garnet-type Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) solid electrolyte (SE) has been widely used as a promising material providing protection for Li anode in lithium-ion and hybrid-electrolyte cells due to its high ionic conductivity and superior stability against Li metal. So far much efforts have been expended on addressing the issues at LLZO/Li metal interface, but relatively little attention was placed on the interface between LLZO and liquid electrolyte (LE), while this interface is also crucial for the successful implementation of protected Li metal batteries. Herein, we devote an effort to clarifying the characteristics of the SLEI between Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12 (LLZTO) and LiPF6-based LE. Furthermore, the reaction mechanism and improved approaches are particularly emphasized and discussed. The presence of trace water in LE plays an important role in the formation of SLEI, as it can accelerate the H+/Li+ exchange of LLZTO and self-decomposition of LiPF6. LiF generated from LiPF6 decomposition and HF corrosion is confirmed as the main component of SLEI via X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) depth profiling. The thickness of the SLEI increase with time, the maximum thickness is about 40 nm after immersion in LE for 48 h. We expect that this systematic methodology can serve as a reference for investigating various SLEI for broader applications.

Abstract

NiFe layered double hydroxide (LDH) based materials arouses great attention because of their outstanding catalytic activity for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) under alkaline condition. However, its catalytic activity for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) under alkaline condition is relatively poor. Herein, in order to improve the HER catalytic activity of NiFe LDH under alkaline condition, we design a heterostructure of NiS and NiS2 on NiFe LDH, and successfully achieve Mo element doping. The catalyst named NiFe-LDH@Mo-NiS-NiS2/NF possesses a three-dimensional nano-flower-like structure and shows an outstanding catalytic performance for both HER and OER. Specifically, in 1 M KOH solution, it requires the low overpotentials of 261 and 120 mV to achieve the current density of 50 and 10 mA cm-2 for OER and HER, respectively. Simultaneously, when NiFe-LDH@Mo-NiS2-NiS/NF is used as the bifunctional catalysts, it only needs a low voltage of 1.63 V to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm-2. The outstanding catalytic performance is attributed to its special heterostructure and the synergy between Mo and NiSx, resulting in comparability with most reported non-noble metal-based catalysts. The doping of metal elements and the construction of heterostructures provide new ideas for the structure regulation and performance improvement of bifunctional electrocatalysts.
