Globally, we are faced with a climate crisis that requires urgent transition to a low-carbon economy. Simultaneously, the biodiversity crisis demands equally urgent action to prevent further species loss and promote restoration and rehabilitation of ecosystems. Climate action itself must prevent further pressures on biodiversity and options for synergistic gains for both climate and biodiversity change mitigation and adaptation need to be explored and implemented. Here, we review the key potential impacts of climate mitigation measures in energy and land-use on biodiversity, including the development of renewable energy such as offshore and onshore wind, solar, and bioenergy. We also assess the potential impacts of climate action driven afforestation and native habitat rehabilitation and restoration. We apply our findings to Ireland as a unique case-study as the government develops a coordinated response to climate and biodiversity change through declaration of a joint climate and biodiversity emergency and inclusion of biodiversity in key climate change legislation and the national Climate Action Plan. However, acknowledgement of these intertwined crises is only a first step; implementation of synergistic solutions requires careful planning. We demonstrate how synergy between climate and biodiversity action can be gained through explicit consideration of the effects of climate change mitigation strategies, such as energy infrastructure development and land-use change, on biodiversity. We identify several potential "win-win" strategies for both climate mitigation and biodiversity conservation. For Ireland, these include increasing offshore wind capacity, rehabilitating natural areas surrounding onshore wind turbines, and limiting the development of solar photovoltaics to the built environment. Ultimately, climate mitigation should be implemented in a "Right Action, Right Place" framework to maximise positive biodiversity benefits. This review provides one of the first examples of how national climate actions can be implemented in a biodiversity-conscious way to initiate discussion about synergistic solutions for both climate and biodiversity.

Environmental and conservation scientists are increasingly being asked to justify their work in terms of benefits to society. This article describes economic theory for conceptualizing the benefits from environmental research, and provides a framework for estimating those benefits. In particular we discuss the evaluation of environmental science that is intended to benefit society through informing policy decisions. The chain between environmental research and its benefits through policy change includes at least four links: the research itself, policy change, behavior change and environmental change. Each of these four stages presents challenges and entails time lags. If any link fails, the chain breaks. The standard economic model of supply and demand, which is used to quantify benefits from research into market goods, can be adapted for application to environmental goods. Improved conceptualization and measurement of benefits from environmental research would assist environmental scientists to: (1) select research topics that are likely to deliver large environmental benefits; (2) design their research in a way that will increase its relevance, usefulness and potential impact on policy and, ultimately, the environment; and (3) make the case for funding particular research proposals. It could assist research agencies or research funders to: prioritize proposed research; make a case for increased funding for environmental research; and identify obstacles to the translation of research into environmental impacts, allowing attention to be focused on addressing these bottlenecks.

Periphyton is increasingly used to assess the biological condition of lakes. The predominance of relatively shallow exposed waterbodies in Ireland implies that epilithic diatoms should have a prominent role as bioindicators for the WFD; but epilithic diatom ecology in these Irish systems is poorly described. We characterised spring and summer diatom populations in diverse periphyton communities in 91 Irish lake waterbodies. Six assemblage clusters of diatom species were identified, and variation in their assemblages was predominately associated with environmental gradients of acidity-alkalinity, total phosphorus, and true colour. Diatom composition differed amongst high status lakes in three a priori defined lake alkalinity groups commonly used as a diatom typology for lake classification. However, when waterbodies were evaluated with a lake trophic diatom index (LTDI) their distribution of ‘expected-values’ was equivalent. The LTDI was highly correlated with total phosphorus but also had similar responses in the three lake alkalinity types. These findings indicated that lake typology had a limited role for diatom classification with the LTDI in Ireland. Matched spring and summer sampling across wide environmental gradients allowed the role of seasonality to be investigated. Relatively few benthic diatoms had a significant seasonal indicator value suggesting that unbiased monitoring of the epilithon is possible during any month of the growing season in comparable temperate waterbodies. However, temporal variability was lower at low values of the LTDI and increased unpredictably on a lake by lake basis thereafter. Given that lake diatom classification has been validated we suggest that the approach could be developed and used for more targeted assessment objectives.

The increasing extent and intensity of agricultural land use has led to an increase in the volume of agrochemicals applied to the landscape, including those used to improve the nutritional quality of soils (fertilizers) as well as those used to control undesirable species in the agroecosystem (pesticides). Chemicals can disperse in the air and surface and ground water, leading to exposure of non-target organisms. Ruderal, disturbance-tolerant plants on which many flower-visiting insects rely are commonly exposed to these chemicals in agroecosystems. Our research questions were: 1) how does non-target exposure to agrochemicals affect plant growth? 2) what are the indirect effects of non-target exposure to agrochemicals on flower-visitation by insects? We designed a two year field experiment imitating field-realistic fertilizer run-off and non-target herbicide exposure scenarios to explore the impact of low concentrations of fertilizer and herbicide alone, and in combination, on communities of seven plant species, including six native perennials and one non-native annual commonly found in agricultural systems in Ireland (Cirsium vulgare, Epilobium hirsutum, Plantago lanceolata, Origanum vulgare, Filipendula ulmaria, Hypochaeris radicata, Phacelia tanacetifolia). We created field-realistic exposure scenarios by applying concentrations of mineral fertilizer similar to those detected in ground water, and glyphosate levels equivalent to 7.6 % of a standard field application, to the foliage and soil of the plots. We found low concentrations of fertilizer and herbicide affected plant growth: fertilised plants were taller when flowering, while plants exposed to herbicide flowered at shorter heights and produced shorter leaves. The size of the floral display had the largest effect on insect visitation, with larger floral displays significantly more likely to receive a visitor in a given sampling event. The size of the floral display also interacted significantly with the fertilizer treatment for both the abundance and species richness of floral visitors. Overall, our results suggest that there are direct and indirect effects of agrochemical exposure on plants in field margins, and that these effects change the interactions between ruderal plants and flower-visiting insects.

Conservation-motivated eradications may cause unexpected perverse effects, and these undesirable consequences can be difficult to predict due to the paucity of information on species interactions. A probabilistic qualitative approach, which does not require extensive model parameterization, is becoming increasingly accepted and applied to conservation scenarios when information is limited. However, recent work has criticized this approach on philosophical grounds and proposed an alternative non-probabilistic Boolean analysis method, which circumvents the philosophical difficulties. There is a need for exploring the ability of this novel approach for informing conservation decisions. To do so, we applied the first real-world test of the non-probabilistic Boolean approach using a case study of management of Felis catus (feral cat) and Rattus rattus (black rat) on Christmas Island. We also applied the probabilistic approach as a contrast. Our modeling results showed that the probabilistic approach generated ambiguous outcomes, making it impractical to draw management recommendations. In contrast, the non-probabilistic Boolean approach revealed interpretable rules governing species responses, suggesting that while cat management alone is a risky strategy, the risk of negative effects of cat management on native species can be reduced by the addition of rat management. Thus, given limited resources, in combination with cat management it is prudent to prioritize rat management efforts in the habitats of potentially impacted native species of high concern and value. We conclude that the Boolean approach can be very useful when little information is available to model an ecological system and that it provides a way of identifying the potential risks and benefits of management strategies, enabling better informed conservation decision-making in the face of limited knowledge.

International audience; The management of introduced species that are both invasive and commercially valuable is contentious. While such species provide substantial economic benefits to some, they pose considerable costs to others due to negative impacts on ecosystems. We propose a decision framework to help balance conflicting objectives and support the management of commercially valuable invasive species. We illustrate our framework using the buffel grass (Pennisetum ciliare syn. Cenchrus ciliaris L.) invasion in Australia. In rangelands worldwide, buffet grass is amongst a suite of commercially valuable invasive species, highly valued by some graziers as a pasture species but widely unpopular among those concerned with the threat it poses for native biodiversity. The framework comprises four components. First we develop a state and transition model to represent the invasion dynamics of buffel grass and the effect of management actions. Second we construct utility functions to represent the relative values of buffel grass cover in terms of production and biodiversity utilities (indicative of grazier's and conservationist's relative 'happiness' regarding buffel grass cover). We draw on expert and empirical data for the construction of the model and utility functions. Third, we present management strategies that minimize losses in production and biodiversity utilities in the absence of budget constraints. We use stochastic dynamic programming and multi-criteria decision analysis which explicitly account for trade-offs between production and biodiversity conservation concerns. Finally, we conduct a sensitivity analysis to assess the impact of assumptions of the model and utility functions. Management complexity arises from biodiversity-production trade-off situations in which the desirable state of buffel grass cover and effective actions to achieve this state depend on the utility functions. Management solutions were particularly sensitive to the shape of the utility functions for biodiversity. Solutions were less sensitive to uncertainty surrounding the effectiveness of management actions. We found in most biodiversity-production tradeoff situations a compromise solution led to management for an intermediate level (>0-50%) of buffel grass cover. However, when maximal values for both biodiversity and production are high, it may be more practical to manage for one value rather than find a compromise solution where concessions from both sides are high. Our decision framework does not attempt to optimize economic outcomes but provides a guide for formulating trade-offs between opposing views, something that is relevant to the management of any natural resource management problem where there are conflicting objectives.

Researchers Jennifer Firn and Yvonne M. Buckley focus on impacts of invasive plants on Australian rangeland biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. Many of the exotic invasive species within rangelands were intentionally introduced for pasture improvement, soil stabilization, and ornamental purposes. When compared to pastures dominated by native perennial grasses, Gamba grass has been found to use three times the amount of water and to reduce the amount of water available through the soil profile. Dominance by non-native plant species is altering the natural fire regimens of Australian rangelands. Fire is a key driver of species diversity, nutrient cycling, and vegetation dynamics within Australian landscapes. Many species are adapted to fire, relying on heat, and smoke as cues for germination. There is an urgent need for restoration efforts to be re-focused on the present and the future. Woody regrowth is extensive on abandoned agricultural lands and developed pastures worldwide. Regrowth is actively controlled in working pastures, but it could be managed to offset greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture and other emitting industries with supplementary benefits for biodiversity conservation. This paper explores the case of Brigalow regrowth in the extensive pastoral landscape of north-eastern Australia. By synthesising current ecological knowledge with relevant socio-economic and policy considerations, it examines the potential of the Brigalow regrowth ecosystem to provide dual carbon/biodiversity benefits. Brigalow regrowth sequesters large amounts of carbon, especially when compared to other ecosystems from similar sub-humid climates. In addition, restoring regrowth is likely to have benefits for a wide range of native flora and fauna, including the endangered bridled nailtail wallaby. However, there are knowledge gaps relating to the landscape ecology of Brigalow regrowth and the impacts of management and climate change on carbon/restoration potential. Also, a conflict exists between short-term carbon sequestration and long-term restoration goals and we suggest a role for restoration thinning to resolve this. Regional demand for high biomass regrowth as a carbon offset is likely to be high but ambiguities in carbon policy threaten to diminish the use of natural regrowth for reforestation projects.

We review key issues, available approaches and analyses to encourage and assist practitioners to develop sound plans to evaluate the effectiveness of weed biological control agents at various phases throughout a program. Assessing the effectiveness of prospective agents before release assists the selection process, while post-release evaluation aims to determine the extent that agents are alleviating the ecological, social and economic impacts of the weeds. Information gathered on weed impacts prior to the initiation of a biological control program is necessary to provide baseline data and devise performance targets against which the program can subsequently be evaluated. Detailed data on weed populations, associated plant communities and, in some instances ecosystem processes collected at representative sites in the introduced range several years before the release of agents can be compared with similar data collected later to assess agent effectiveness. Laboratory, glasshouse and field studies are typically used to assess agent effectiveness. While some approaches used for field studies may be influenced by confounding factors, manipulative experiments where agents are excluded (or included) using chemicals or cages are more robust but time-consuming and expensive to implement. Demographic modeling and benefit–cost analyses are increasingly being used to complement other studies. There is an obvious need for more investment in long-term post-release evaluation of agent effectiveness to rigorously document outcomes of biological control programs.

The intensity and type of damage exerted by a biological control agent on an invasive plant is often influenced by plant architecture or size, density, distribution and phenology as well as microhabitat. Here, herbivore and pathogen damage thought to be caused by seven biological control agents introduced up to 40 years ago for control of groundsel bush (Baccharis halimifolia) is examined. Sampling was conducted throughout the known introduced range of groundsel bush in Australia to determine how damage type and intensity were influenced by rainfall, temperature, elevation, population density, average plant size and variability in plant size. Sori abundance score (characteristic of the introduced rust fungus) was higher on large plants at high rainfall. Leaf skeletonization was negatively correlated with elevation and leaf miner damage was lower in high density plant populations. Leaf hole damage increased with rainfall particularly on large plants in homogeneous sized populations. Stem-borer damage increased with plant size, but this relationship was influenced by rainfall and plant population density. There was less stem-boring in large populations but the strength of the relationship was influenced by temperature and variation in plant size. Overall considerable variation in intensity of herbivore and pathogen damage was found throughout the range of groundsel bush. If herbivore and pathogen damage impact on plant vital rates and demography it would be expected that biological control success for this species would be patchy and depend on plant size, population density and site location.
