The humic-like substances were the main organic components in most wastewater (e.g. domestic sewage, toilet wastewater and landfill leachate). Two types of actual humic-like substances (fulvic acid (FA) and biologically treated landfill leachate (BTLL)) were selected to describe the changes in the properties of humic-like substances (complexation ability, aromaticity and mobility) during electrochemical oxidation. Meanwhile, the acute cytotoxicity of FA and BTLL was also tested by acute toxicological test of luminescent bacteria. The results showed that the consumption of coordinating groups such as phenolic groups and hydrogen bonds reduced the complexation ability of FA and BTLL. The functional groups were degraded with the removal order of quinone group, phenolic group and aromatic group, and finally realized the molecular saturation and aromaticity decrease for humic-like substances. The mobility of FA and BTLL was decreased because of the enhancement of hydrophobicity during electrolysis process. Furthermore, the available chlorine produced during electrochemical oxidation was the main acute cytotoxicity substance, therefore, it is necessary to remove it before discharge in order to reduce ecological risks. This study provides a basis for understanding and evaluating the electrochemical degradation process of humic-like substances in detail.

This study investigated the degradation of benzophenone-4 (BP-4) in a UV/chlorine disinfection process, with chlorination and UV disinfection as comparisons. With a degradation efficiency of 80% after 10 s, the UV/chlorine process significantly enhanced the degradation of BP-4. However, a rebound of 36% of the initial concentration was observed in the UV/chlorine process ([free active chlorine (FAC)]0:[BP-4]0 = 1:1, pH = 7). The same tendency appeared under the addition of alkalinity, Cl−, and humic acid (HA). This work interpreted this interesting kinetic tendency from the perspective of mechanism. In fact, the transformation between the chlorinated product P1 and BP-4 was reversible under certain conditions. The inhomogeneous charge distribution of the C Cl bond in P1 led to the photolytic dechlorination of P1. This transformation caused an increase in BP-4 concentration. In addition, the increase in the UV light power promoted the photodecomposition of P1 under the experimental condition. In addition, this study evaluated the change in absorbable organic halogens (AOX) and three kinds of toxicity changes in the BP-4 solution after chlorination and the UV/chlorine process, including the acute toxicity of luminescent bacteria, endocrine disrupting effect and cytotoxicity. The UV/chlorine process exhibited lower ecotoxicity than chlorination in water treatment.

Previous studies demonstrated long-term stimulation of some commercial personal care products (PCPs) on freshwater luminescent bacteria Vibrio qinghaiensis sp .-Q67 (Q67). However, whether a certain component can affect mixture's hormetic effect is still unknown. In this paper, two of ingredients in PCPs, 2-phenoxyethanol (PhE) and polyethylene glycol 400 (PEG400), were selected as object compounds to explore the relationship between concentration-response (CR) of mixtures and that of a single component. It was found that PEG400 has monotonic CR (MCR) on Q67 both at the short-term (0.25 h) and long-term (12 h) exposures while PhE has MCR at 0.25 h and hormetic CR (HCR) at 12 h. Here, the concentration-response curves (CRCs) of PEG400 at 0.25 and 12 h are overlapped each other and the CRCs of PEG400 are on the right of PhE. If the pEC 50 is taken as a toxic index, the toxicities of PEG400 at two times are basically the same, and those of PhE are the same, too, but PhE is twice as toxic as PEG400. For the mixtures of PEG400 and PhE, all rays except R1 have MCRs at 0.25 h while all rays have HCRs at 12 h where the higher the mixture ratio of PhE is, the more negative the maximum stimulation effect is. More importantly, the E min values of all rays are more negative (1.79–3.17-fold) than that of PhE worked alone, which implies that the introduction of PEG400 significantly enhances stimulative effect of PhE. At 0.25 h, all binary mixture rays but R1 produce a low-concentration additive action and high-concentration synergism. At 12 h, all rays display additive action, antagonism, additive action, and synergism in turn when the concentration changes from low to high. The overall findings suggested toxicological interactions should be considered in the risk assessment of PCPs and their potential impacts on ecological balances.

Diclofenac was frequently found in various waters, indicating conventional wastewater treatment methods ineffective in its removal. In this study, LaFeO3 (LFO) was synthesized and its catalytic activity of LFO as the activator of different oxidants such as persulfate (PS), hydrogen peroxide and peroxylmonosulfate (PMS) was evaluated in terms of DCF degradation. The influence of calcination temperature was examined on the catalytic activity of LFO. The effects of various parameters including pH levels, PMS concentration, LFO dose and initial DCF concentration were investigated on DCF degradation rate. The marginal effects of PMS concentration and LFO dose were compared. Langmuir-Hinshelwood (LH) model was used to quantitatively describe DCF degradation reaction in LFO/PMS system. The two constants, k (Limiting reaction rate at maximum coverage) and K (Equilibrium adsorption constant), were determined on the basis of LH model. The performance of LFO/PMS process was also estimated in the presence of various inorganic anions. The potential toxicity of LFO and PMS were evaluated using phytoplankton and the toxicity evolution during DCF degradation was also investigated using luminescent bacteria. This contribution provides a basic study regarding the potential application of heterogeneous PMS activation by perovskite LFO for both DCF removal and toxicity elimination.

Luminescent bacteria can emit visible light at 450–490 nm, and its luminous intensity decreases with the increase of the concentration of toxic substances in test solution. The method using luminescent bacteria is widely used in acute toxicity analysis of water quality because it is a simple, rapid and low-cost way. In recent years, biosensors based on luminescent bacteria have attracted more and more attention, and the reports of bioluminescence biosensors based on microfluidic systems are increasing day by day. Based on the characteristics and mechanism of luminescent bacteria, this paper introduces their applications in the environmental monitoring, and summarizes several new bioluminescence sensors.

Bioluminescence is the primary source of light by a natural chemical reaction by living organisms thereby emitting visible light. The creation of sustainable light sources which exert less light pollution is increasingly important as illuminating our night times with electrical power is resulting in long term stress on our ecosystem. Bioluminescence emits cold light means it generates less than 20% thermal radiation or heat. These bacteria can be used to produce Biolight, a living lighting system which requires no electricity, whilst producing minimal amount of pollution and CO2 emission. This light provides a non-polluting environmentally friendly source of illumination which is cost effective and since the bacteria used are non-toxic, non-pathogenic, they are harmless as well. These bacterially driven lights can be used in street lights, guiding lights to expel darkness in public places, nighttime’s edge indicators for road and highways, step light for cinemas, theatres and even atmospheric lightning for therapy. This study aimed at developing a novel strategy to produce electricity free Biolight powered by living luminescent bacteria, isolated from marine source and the gene responsible for bioluminescence was targeted.

Fish carpaccio is a ready-to-eat product with a very limited shelf life. In the present work, the use of high pressure treatment (HP) and/or antimicrobial edible film was studied in order to improve quality and stability of salmon carpaccio. In a preliminary part of the work, a film composed of gelatin plus chitosan incorporating clove essential oil was selected, based on its physicochemical and antimicrobial properties. Eugenol and β-caryophyllene, the main volatile components of the film, migrated to salmon muscle, the release being favored by HP and storage time. Concurrently, reducing power of the muscle increased, resulting in prevention of lipid oxidation derived from either HP or refrigerated storage. HP treatment reduced total microbial counts by 1.5 log cycles from the onset of storage, whereas the film reduced it by 2 log cycles after 3 days. The combination of HP and edible film exerted the most intense antimicrobial effect, total bacterial counts, luminescent bacteria, HS-producing organisms, pseudomonads, enterobacteria, and lactic acid bacteria remaining constant or under detection limit over the whole storage period (11 days). It has been stated by researchers that the antibiotic polymyxin B sulfate (POL) is a key component inducing time-dependent antagonism in freshwater luminescent bacteria, Vibrio qinghaiensis sp.-Q67, exposed in the ternary mixture system of the ionic liquids, pesticide and antibiotics. However, the previous statement is limited to ternary and quaternary mixtures without considering situations such as the binary system. In order to prove the direct inducing of antagonism by POL in a more complete and systematic way, two categories of experiments (adding POL in non-antagonistic ternary system and decomposing antagonistic ternary system with POL into the binary system) have been conducted in this paper. The results showed that quaternary mixture systems (adding POL to non-antagonism ternary mixture, up verification) exhibit antagonistic action in a majority of rays, at some point in the experiment. However, by decomposing the antagonistic ternary mixtures with POL into binary mixtures (down verification), the combined toxicities of binary mixtures at all time points in the experiment are additive. Obviously, the POL has a significant contribution to antagonism only in the ternary and quaternary mixtures, but not in the binary mixtures. We can draw a new conclusion that the antagonism of the multi-component mixtures is induced by at least three components (including POL), with complex chemical interactions. Therefore, considering POL's influence of antagonism as an example, future environmental protection practitioners and academic researchers should construct more scenarios of mixtures when assessing the influences and reactions of certain chemicals causing pollutions.

In this study, the applicability of UV absorbance at 254 nm (UV254) and volatile fatty acids (VFAs) to serve as reliable surrogates to predict acute toxicity of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) wastewater was investigated. The medicine residues and VFAs were identified as main components of the TCM wastewater, and their individual and joint toxicity assays were operated with luminescent bacteria. The median effective concentration (EC50) values of medicine residues and VFAs were in the range of 26.46-165.55 mg/L and 11.45-20.58 g/L, respectively. The joint toxicity action modes of medicine residues, VFAs and medicine residues-VFAs were identified as additive, additive and synergistic respectively. UV254 and VFAs showed better correlations with acute toxicity according to the correlation analysis, compared with other conventional parameters. The regression model was a good fit for toxic unit (TU50) as a function of UV254 and VFAs according to the stepwise regression method (adjusted R2 = 0.836). Validation of the model to the pilot-scale samples provided satisfactory prediction results in the influent and hydrolysis acidification effluent samples tests, but for EGSB effluent and final effluent samples, the model needed further optimization. Surrogates prediction using UV254 and VFAs provided a valuable and cost-saving tool for rapid or on-line monitoring of acute toxicity of TCM wastewater.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are new porous materials that attract wide attention due to their environmentally-friendly photocatalytic characteristics. However, poor charge separation in most MOFs largely limits their photocatalytic activity. In this study, a novel Fe-based bi-MOFs heterojunctions material, namely NH2-MIL-88B(Fe)@MIL-100(Fe) was prepared by internal extended growth of MIL-100(Fe) on spindle-like NH2-MIL-88B(Fe). Compared with pure NH2-MIL-88B(Fe) and MIL-100(Fe), the synthesized Fe-based bi-MOFs structure catalyst displayed excellent photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline (TC), with optimal removal of 99.9% achieved in 90 min under neutral conditions. This result is attributed to the sufficient visible light absorption, and the enhanced separation and transfer of h+ and e− by the bi-MOFs structure. In particular, ∙O2−, h+ and ∙OH showed synergistic effects in the photodegradation process, and Fe-based bi-MOFs displayed high stability after five cycles. The inhibition ratio of luminescent bacteria of the degraded solution was lower than 24%, indicating the high efficiency and safety of this Fe-based bi-MOFs for the treatment of antibiotic-contaminated water.

There is a need for rapid simple and informative environmental assessment methods. The present investigation is aimed at assessing the possibility of using the combined enzyme system of luminescent bacteria: NAD(P)H:FMN-oxidoreductase + luciferase (Red + Luc) for predicting the potential toxicity of industrial urbostratozems sampled in the city of Krasnoyarsk. Three groups of urbostratozems polluted with fluorine, arsenic and lead, were tested by the methods of chemical analysis and enzymatic bioassay. Only the assessment of the arsenic-contaminated soil samples showed the dependence between the reduced activity of the enzyme system and the arsenic concentration variations. The results reveal that the sensitivity of the Red + Luc enzyme system to the soil pollutants depends on the properties of the studied soil samples. Moreover, the solubility of lead in the soil samples affects the accuracy of the enzymatic bioassays for soil toxicity testing. The results of the enzymatic bioassay of the fluoride-contaminated soil samples are ambiguous. The obtained data show the relevance of the sample preparation during integral bioassays. In addition, soil properties should be taken into account as well. The current study emphasizes the importance of conducting chemical and biological testing as a combined set to obtain comprehensive information about the anthropogenic load.

Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have been widely applied for the advanced treatment of recalcitrant wastewater. However, the toxicity changes during AOPs are still unclear because in some cases the intermediate products could exhibit equivalent or even higher toxicity compared with the original pollutants. Therefore it is necessary to evaluate the toxicity evolution during AOPs. This review mainly focused on the toxicity changes of wastewater during various AOPs treatment, including Fenton/Fenton-like oxidation, ozonation/catalytic ozonation, persulfate radical-based oxidation, photocatalytic oxidation, ionizing radiation, electro-catalytic oxidation, ultrasound oxidation and wet oxidation. Firstly, the toxicity assessment methods were summarized, including acute toxicity (such as luminescent bacteria assay, fish assay, water flea assay and algae assay), genetic toxicity (Ames assay, SOS/umu assay, comet assay and micronucleus assay), estrogenic activity, immunity toxicity, and endocrine disrupting effect (such as yeast two-hybrid assay and fish endocrine disrupting assay), the applications of these methods in determining the toxicity changes of wastewater during AOPs treatment were summarized and analyzed in detail. Secondly, the toxicity prediction by computational simulation was introduced, mainly focusing on two common software, including TEST and ECOSAR. Thirdly, the strategies for eliminating the toxicity of wastewater after AOPs treatment were proposed. Finally, the concluding remarks and perspectives were presented for further study. This review will deepen to understand the toxicity evolution of wastewater during AOPs.

Additional control indexes should be considered for the operation and design of post-treatment systems, as the wastewater treatment objectives are developing toward protecting the safety of ecological environments. In this study, two control indexes were selected and examined systematically in pilot-scale shallow open-water unit (SOWU) ponds for domestic effluent polishing: micropollutants and biotoxicities. The total risk quotient (RQTotal ≤ 1) and effect-based trigger value (EBT) were set as the thresholds for known micropollutants and biological effects, respectively. The results showed that RQTotal of micropollutants (n = 46) could be mitigated to an acceptable level and the luminescent bacteria toxicity was in compliance with the EBT after SOWU polishing in the warm season. The reduction of micropollutants and biotoxicities in the SOWUs both fit the k–C* model well (R2 > 0.9) in the warm and cold seasons. Finally, the k–C* model integrated with the control indexes was developed to design the SOWU dimensions, and the results indicated that a pond area of 21.7–108.5 m2 was required for every 1 m3/d of effluent when micropollutants were set as the control index, while a pond area of 3.6–18.2 m2 was required when luminescent bacteria toxicity was set as the control index.

Because of their mechanical properties and resistances to heat and chemicals, epoxy resin-based coatings are widely used for corrosion protection. Despite of the aromatic backbone and the resulting susceptibility to UV degradation, epoxy resins are frequently used as binding agent in top layers of anti-corrosion coating systems. Consequently, these organic polymers are directly exposed to sunlight and thus UV radiation. The present study was designed to investigate if toxic effects of epoxy resin-based-coatings are changed by UV-A irradiation. For this purpose, two epoxide-based top coatings were examined with and without UV aging for their bacterial toxicity and estrogenicity. In addition, chemical analyses were performed to identify released compounds as well as photolytic degradation products and to assign toxic effects to individual substances. UV-A irradiation of epoxy resin based top coatings resulted in an overall decrease of acute and specific ecotoxicological effects but as well to the formation of toxic transformation products. Both, in leachates of untreated and UV-A irradiated coatings, 4tBP was identified as the main driver of estrogenicity and toxicity to luminescent bacteria. BPA and structural analogs contributing to estrogenic effects in leachates were formed by UV-A irradiation. The combination of HPTLC coupled bioassays and LC-MS analyses supported the identification of bioactive compounds in terms of an effect-directed analysis. The present findings indicate that epoxide-based coatings are less suitable for the application as top coatings and more UV stable coatings like aliphatic polyurethanes should be preferred., Graphical abstract Image, graphical abstract

In the last decades, there has been an increasing concern about the human exposure to indoor dust. Therefore, it is imperative to assess the toxicity of indoor dust and associated dust extracts. In this study, the acute toxicity assessment of indoor dust was performed using a bioluminescence test, with Photobacterium phosphoreum T3 (PPT3) chosen as the test bacterium. The different indoor dust samples were collected from residences, offices, dormitories and laboratories in Shanghai, China. Our data reveal that PPT3 is more active to water-soluble ions and organic contaminants at low concentrations, while extract solutions elicit increased bacterial toxicity at high concentrations. The results of a bioluminescence assay by PPT3 indicated that the dust organic extracts exhibited increased toxicity compared with the water exacts. Dust extracts from the laboratory exhibited the greatest bacterial toxicity when compared with office, dormitory and residence samples. Moreover, office dust exhibited higher bacterial toxicity than residence dust. Furthermore, the comprehensive toxicity of dust on PPT3 was assessed by extracts toxicity -addition (i.e. IRaddition). The calculated values were close to the corresponding experimental data. The bioluminescence test showed the indoor dust samples are weakly toxic to PPT3, which are equivalent to 0.046–0.123 mg Hg•L−1. Different dust extracts among the different sampling sites showed varying toxicity to PPT3. This study provides some important information to understand the potential health risk from different indoor environment using a rapid bioluminescence assay.

In effect-directed analysis (EDA) with high-performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC), the effect is often detected using images. Thus, an approach to create inhibition chromatograms from these images was developed using the example of the HPTLC- bioluminescence inhibition test. A comparison between the cuvette test and the HPTLC test shows that the test on the plate is significantly more sensitive. To describe the strength of the effect, the EC50 value is determined from the dose-response relationship. However, the inhibiting compounds are generally unknown and thus their concentrations are also unknown. Therefore, instead of the concentration, the known application volumes are used. This enables the calculation of the application volume necessary to achieve 50% inhibition. Since the volume is inversely proportional to the concentration, the reciprocal value of the calculated volume is indicated and is referred to as the reciprocal iso-inhibition volume (RIV). Using this RIV-concept, it is now possible to compare inhibition bands within and between plates. The entire evaluation is described by the means of two samples from a contaminated site using the bioluminescence inhibition.

Although magnetic ionic liquids (MILs) are not yet industrially applied, their continued development and eventual commercial use may lead to their appearance into the aquatic ecosystem through accidental spills or effluents, consequently promoting aquatic contaminations. Furthermore, the deficient information and uncertainty surrounding the environmental impact of MILs could be a major barrier to their widespread industrial application and international registration. Thus, in the present work, a range of cholinium salt derivatives with magnetic properties was synthesized and their ecotoxicity was evaluated towards the luminescent bacteria Vibrio fischeri. The results suggest that all MILs structures tested are moderately toxic, or even toxic, to the bacteria. Furthermore, their toxicity is highly dependent on the structural modifications of the cation, namely the alkyl side chain length and the number of hydroxyethyl groups, as well as the atomic number of the metal anion. Finally, from the magnetic anions evaluated, the [MnCl4]2- is the less toxic. In order to improve the knowledge for the prospective design of environmentally safer MILs, it is important to expand this study to other aquatic organisms at different trophic levels. published

Chlorination is essential to the safety of reclaimed water; however, this process leads to concern regarding the formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) and toxicity. This study reviewed the formation and control strategies for DBPs and toxicity in reclaimed water during chlorination. Both regulated and emerging DBPs have been frequently detected in reclaimed water during chlorination at a higher level than those in drinking water, indicating they pose a greater risk to humans. Luminescent bacteria and Daphnia magna acute toxicity, anti-estrogenic activity and cytotoxicity generally increased after chlorination because of the formation of DBPs. Genotoxicity by umu-test and estrogenic activity were decreased after chlorination because of destruction of toxic chemicals. During chlorination, water quality significantly impacted changes in toxicity. Ammonium tended to attenuate toxicity changes by reacting with chlorine to form chloramine, while bromide tended to aggravate toxicity changes by forming hypobromous acid. During pretreatment by ozonation and coagulation, disinfection byproduct formation potential (DBPFP) and toxicity formation potential (TFP) occasionally increase, which is accompanied by DOC removal; thus, the decrease of DOC was limited to indicate the decrease of DBPFP and TFP. It is more important to eliminate the key fraction of precursors such as hydrophobic acid and hydrophilic neutrals. During chlorination, toxicities can increase with the increasing chlorine dose and contact time. To control the excessive toxicity formation, a relatively low chlorine dose and short contact time were required. Quenching chlorine residual with reductive reagents also effectively abated the formation of toxic compounds.

The widespread use of organic ultraviolet (UV) filters in personal care products raises concerns about their potentially hazardous effects on human and ecosystem health. In this study, the toxicities of four commonly used benzophenones (BPs) UV filters including benzophenone (BP), 2-Hydroxybenzophenone (2HB), 2-Hydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone (BP3), and 2-Hydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone-5-sulfonicacid (BP4) in water were assayed in vitro using Vibrio fischeri, SOS/umu assay, and yeast estrogen screen (YES) assay, as well as in vivo using zebrafish larvae. The results showed that the luminescent bacteria toxicity, expressed as logEC50, increased with the lipophilicity (logKow) of BPs UV filters. Especially, since 2HB, BP3 and BP4 had different substituent groups, namely -OH, -OCH3 and -SO3H, respectively, these substituent functional groups had a major contribution to the lipophilicity and acute toxicity of these BPs. Similar tendency was observed for the genotoxicity, expressed as the value of induction ratio=1.5. Moreover, all the target BPs UV filters showed estrogenic activity, but no significant influences of lipophilicity on the estrogenicity were observed, with BP3 having the weakest estrogenic efficiency in vitro. Although BP3 displayed no noticeable adverse effects in any in vitro assays, multiple hormonal activities were observed in zebrafish larvae including estrogenicity, anti-estrogenicity and anti-androgenicity by regulating the expression of target genes. The results indicated potential hazardous effects of BPs UV filters and the importance of the combination of toxicological evaluation methods including in vitro and in vivo assays.

The real antibiotic industrial wastewater with the characteristics of complex compositions, biological toxic, and degradation-resistant, is still biologically toxic to the ecosystem and human health even if the discharge standards have been met after treatment by traditional methods. Therefore, the biological harmless treatment of real antibiotic industrial wastewater is a valuable and meaningful research field. For the first time, a novel Ti/SnO2-Sb anode/air diffusion cathode/UV dual photo-electro catalysis coupling system (T-A-PE) for real antibiotic industrial wastewater treatment was investigated. Non-significant degradation was found in raw wastewater with high TOC = 2.61 × 103 mg·L−1. However, the increasing TOC removal with more dilution times indicated adaptability of T-A-PE system with lower organic matter loading. The highest 95.6% removal of TOC was obtained at 120 min, with 7.06 mA·cm−2 of current density and 200 dilution times. The high mineralization efficiency of T-A-PE system surpassed those of pure photo and electro catalysis combined, suggesting a significant synergistic effect between photo and electro catalysis. Neutral condition and current density = 7.06 mA·cm−2 are prior for pollutants mineralization, while acidic/alkaline conditions and unproper current density may cause faster side reactions. The GC–MS results demonstrated that the number of pollutant category dropped from 26 to 6 after treatment, with the concentrations of remained ones also remarkably decreased. The acute toxicity analysis using a luminescent bacteria method indicated that the treated wastewater by T-A-PE system was biological harmless.

Photocatalytic degradation of typical pharmaceuticals in natural sunlight and in actual water is of great significance. In this study, the oxygen or nitrogen linked heptazine-base polymer (ONLH) was successfully incorporated with TiO2 nanoparticles and formed a TiO2/ONLH nanocomposite which was responded to the natural sunlight. Under natural sunlight, the TiO2/ONLH can effectively degrade ten types of pharmaceuticals. In particular, fluoroquinolone containing N-piperazinyl, and cardiovascular drugs containing long aromatic side chains were easily degraded. The half-life of the best degradation performance of propranolol was less than 5 min. The rate constants of propranolol using the TiO2/ONLH were approximately six- and eight-fold higher than those of pristine TiO2 and ONLH, respectively. Two reactive species (OH and O2-) facilitated the rapid degradation of propranolol, which occurred primarily through the hydroxyl radical addition, ring-opening, and ipso substitution reactions. An acute toxicity test using luminescent bacteria indicated that the toxicity of the propranolol reaction solution gradually decreased with lower total organic carbon (TOC). According to the toxicity evaluation of monomer products, the TiO2/ONLH also reduced the generation of toxic transformation products. The effects of actual water/wastewater have further shown the TiO2/ONLH might be applied for the removal of pharmaceuticals in wastewater.

Wastewater containing high concentrations of antibiotics may inhibit the biological treatment processes, and it could also result in an increase in antibiotic resistant genes in the biological treatment system, causing risks in the environmental waters. Therefore, in this study, taking advantage of the unstable characteristics of tetracycline in alkaline conditions, dual-chamber microbial fuel cells (MFCs) were coupled with the heater to drive the alkaline thermal hydrolysis of tetracycline in the cathode chamber, making tetracycline degradation without contact with microorganisms in the anode chamber. It was observed that tetracycline degradation rates under closed circuit conditions were faster than those under open circuit conditions due to the rising pH in the cathode chamber of closed circuit MFCs, and the temperature increase could result in a decrease in half-life of tetracycline degradation. The TOC analysis showed that most TOC was not removed after 48 h reaction, suggesting tetracycline was mainly transformed to byproducts in the cathode chamber. High resolution mass spectrometry identified the transformation products resulting from the alkaline thermal hydrolysis of tetracycline, and the minimum pharmacophore of tetracycline was altered, which would lead to the loss of antibacterial activity. Microtox tests confirmed the reduction in the toxic effect of tetracycline to luminescent bacteria after treatment in the cathode chamber. Our results have demonstrated the effective degradation of tetracycline using MFC-driven alkaline thermal hydrolysis, which will have potential to be a pretreatment process to assist the subsequent biological treatment processes to destroy high concentrations of antibiotics in the wastewater.

Bioremediation using microorganisms is a promising technique to remediate soil contaminated with heavy metals. In this study, Sporosarcina pasteurii (S. pasteurii) bioremediation by mixing method was used to remediate soils contaminated with lead (Pb), zinc (Zn) and cadmium (Cd). A significant reduction of heavy metal leaching concentrations was observed in S. pasteurii bio-treated samples. Furthermore, urease hydrolyzing bacteria have additional advantages of accelerating metal precipitation by increasing pH. The soluble-exchangeable Pb, Zn and Cd was reduced by 33.3 % ∼ 85.9 %, 21.4 % ∼ 66.0 %, 13.6 % ∼ 29.9 % respectively after bioremediation. The primary objective of metal stabilization was achieved by reducing the bioavailability through immobilizing the Pb, Zn and Cd in the urease-driven carbonate precipitation. Luminescent bacteria toxicity experiments revealed that the metal toxicity of contaminated soil was reduced after bioremediation using S. pasteurii. When subjected to severe environmental conditions, S. pasteurii bioremediation was superior to chemical precipitation technology in terms of long-term stability.

Natural sunlight is a vital environmental element and plays a significant role in the ecological storage of reclaimed water (RW), but its impacts on RW quality are poorly understood. In this study, sunlight-induced changes in RW with a focus on dissolved organic matter (rDOM) and 52 residual micropollutants were investigated in the field during the summer and winter seasons. The results indicated that sunlight exposure led to the dissipation of chromophoric DOM (CDOM) in the summer (55% loss) and winter (19% loss) after 14 consecutive sunny days. During open storage of RW, CDOM absorption in UVC regions was preferentially removed in the summer, while during the winter there was preferential removal of CDOM in UVA regions. The results also showed higher fluorescent DOM (FDOM) removal in summer than in winter (49% and 28%, respectively). Results in both seasons indicated that humic acid-like compounds were the most photolabile fractions and were preferentially removed under sunlight exposure. Sunlight also induced attenuation of micropollutants in the summer and winter at reductions of 66% and 24% from the initial values, respectively. Significant attenuation (>75%) was only observed for endocrine-disrupting chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and sunscreens in the summer, but they accounted for 76% of the total concentrations. Vibrio fischeri toxicity tests demonstrated that sunlight constantly decreased the luminescent bacteria acute toxicity of RW, which was estimated to be caused mainly by the sunlight-induced changes of FDOM and CDOM, while the detected micropollutants could only explain 0.02%–2% of acute toxicity. These findings have important implications regarding our understanding of the ecological storage of reclaimed water and the contribution of management strategies.

The antipsychotic drug quetiapine (QUT) has been frequently detected in sewage treatment plants. However, information on the fate of QUT in aquatic environments and its behavior during UV treatment is limited. In this study, QUT is shown not to be readily biodegradable in the Closed Bottle Test and the Manometric Respirometry Test according to OECD guidelines. The main biotransformation product (BTP) formed in the tests, a carboxylic acid derivative, was identified by means of high-resolution mass spectrometry. This BTP is presumably a human metabolite and showed higher detection rates than QUT in a river sampling campaign conducted in northern Germany. UV elimination kinetics of QUT at different initial concentrations (226.5, 45.3, 11.3, and 2.3 μmol L −1 ) were faster at lower initial concentrations. All seven phototransformation products (PTPs) could be still identified at initial concentration of 11.3 μmol L −1 . The photolytic mixture generated after 128 min of photolysis of QUT was not better biodegradable than QUT. Initial UV treatment of QUT led to the formation of several additional BTPs. Four of them were identified. The bacterial cytotoxicity and genotoxicity before and after phototransformation of QUT in a modified luminescent bacteria test (LBT) and the umu-test (ISO/FDIS 13829) showed cytotoxic effects in the LBT for QUT. Furthermore, PTPs had similar cytotoxic effects on luminescent bacteria. The umu-test did not reveal any genotoxic activity for QUT or PTPs. In conclusion, the release of QUT into sewage treatment plants and aquatic environments could result in the formation of a main BTP. Additional UV treatment of QUT would lead to the formation of additional BTPs. Moreover, treatment did not result in lower toxicity to tested organisms. In conclusion, UV treatment of QUT should be considered critically as a potential treatment for QUT in aquatic systems.

Three distinct textile samples were investigated for color and toxicity (S1–chemical/textile industry; S2–final textile effluent; S3 - standard textile produced effluent–untreated blue). Radiation processing of these samples were carried out at Dynamitron Electron Beam Accelerator and color and toxicity removal were determined: color removal by radiation was 96% (40 kGy, S1); 55% (2.5 kGy, S2) and 90% (2.5 kGy, S3). Concerning toxicity assays, Vibrio fischeri luminescent bacteria demonstrated higher reduction after radiation than the other systems: removal efficiencies were 33% (20 kGy, S1); 55% (2.5 kGy, S2) and 33% (2.5 kGy, S3). Daphnia similis and Brachionus plicatilis fitted well for S3 effluents. Hard toxic volumes into biological treatment plant may be avoided if radiation would be previously applied in a real plant. Results reveled how indispensable is to run toxicity to more than one living-organism.

In this study the adsorption of the dye Acid Red 357 (AR357) present in dyeing effluent, through the use of chromium tanned leather waste (CTLW) as an adsorbent is investigated. The results demonstrate an adsorption capacity of 148.2 mg g −1 , and the removal of approximately 58% of the dye present in solution. In addition the data for adsorption in dyeing effluent, when compared to the data for aqueous solution, demonstrate that competition for adsorption sites by other chemical compounds present in the effluent takes place. The dyeing effluent presents elevated toxicity to microcrustacea, fish and luminescent bacteria, however, after treatment by adsorption, the toxicity is reduced by up to 90% compared to the untreated effluent.

Psychoactive drug diazepam is one of benzodiazepines widely used in human medicine. It has been found to be relatively resistant to chlorination and photolysis. Here we investigated the transformation mechanism of diazepam in aqueous solution through UV/chlorine and simulated sunlight/chlorine treatments. The results showed that the UV/chlorine and sunlight/chlorine processes significantly increased the degradation of diazepam in water. These observed degradations can be elucidated by in-situ generation of reactive species including hydroxyl radical (HO ), reactive chlorine species (RCS) and ozone (O3) during photolysis of chlorine. In the UV/chlorine treatment, the degradation efficiency of diazepam for HO , chlorine, UV and RCS reaction at 90 min was calculated to be 62.1%, 3.8%, 11.9% and 12.3%, respectively. In the simulated sunlight/chlorine treatment, the calculated degradation of 53.1%, 8.1% and 11.2% was attributed to HO , chlorine and RCS reaction, with negligible loss by O3 reaction and sunlight irradiation. In the UV/chlorine and sunlight/chlorine treatments, a total of 70 transformation products was detected using a high-resolution TripleTOF mass system. Six transformation pathways have been tentatively proposed for the diazepam, which includes hydroxylation, chlorination, hydrolyzation, N-demethylation, loss of phenyl group, benzodiazepine ring rearrangement and contraction. Most of the obtained transformation products were less toxic to aquatic organisms including fish, daphnia and green algae than diazepam itself according to the toxicity prediction tool, and did not cause significant changes in toxicity to luminescent bacteria.

Residual trace organic pollutants (TOPs) and associated biological effects from secondary effluent (SE) are attracting much attention because of their safety concerns. Granular activated carbon (GAC) adsorption, due to its low cost and high efficiency, is widely applied for further wastewater treatment, but its selective removals of TOPs and biological effects are poorly understood. In the present study, the surface physicochemical characteristics of four types of typical GACs were investigated, and their correlation with luminescent bacteria toxicity was discussed. Based on the biological effect control, shell GAC, with a great adsorption capacity and high functional group contents was selected for further study, including for the removal of fluorescent dissolved organic matter (DOM), 21 TOPs, and 3 biological effects. The shell GAC showed a promising property of removing fluorescent DOM and TOPs. The total concentration of 21 detected TOPs, including 12 pesticides and 9 pharmaceuticals, achieved 82% removal when 30 g/L shell GACs was added. Individual chemicals removal by GAC adsorption was not well described by an individual parameter (e.g., logD, molecular size, charge, functional groups), but rather by a variety of physical and chemical interactions among TOPs, DOM, and GAC. The biological effects from SE were mainly caused by TOPs and DOM. Hence, shell GACs also showed high removal efficiencies of luminescent bacteria toxicity, genotoxicity, and photosynthetic inhibition effect. The removal mechanisms of the three biological effects from SE were deeply discussed. Therefore, the GAC treatment is considered to be one of the most suitable options to ensure the ecological safety of discharged wastewater, because it can effectively control DOM, TOPs, and associated biological effects.

The current study depicts the isolation of luminescent bacteria from fish and squid samples that were collected from Veraval fish harbour. From Indian mackerel, total 14 and from squid, total 23 bioluminescent bacteria were isolated using luminescence agar medium. Two bioluminescent bacteria with highest relative luminescence intensity PBR1 and PBL1 were selected. These two isolates were subjected to detailed biochemical characterization and were tested positive for 5 out of 13 biochemical tests. Furthermore, both PBR1 and PBL1 were able to ferment cellobiose, dextrose, fructose, galactose, maltose, mannose, sucrose and trehalose with acid production. Based on 16S rRNA partial gene sequence analysis, PBR1 was identified as Vibrio alginolyticus and PBL1 as V. rotiferianus. Antibiotic susceptibility test using paper-disc method showed that PBR1 and PBL1 were sensitive to chloramphenicol, ciprofloxacin, co-trimoxazole, gatifloxacin, levofloxacin, linezolid ad roxithromycin out of 18 antibiotics tested. Moreover, both strains were evaluated for their exopolysachharide (EPS) producing ability where PBR1 and PBL1 were able to yield 1.34 g% (w/v) and 2.45 g% (w/v) EPS respectively from 5 g% (v/v) sucrose concentration. Heavy metal toxicity assessment was carried out using agar well diffusion method with eight heavy metals and both the strains were sensitive to As(III), Cd(II), Ce(II), Cr(III), Cu(II), Hg(II) and while they showed resistance to Pb(II) and Sr(II). Based on these results, a study was conducted to demonstrate bio-removal of Pb and Sr by EPS of PBR1 and PBL1. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra revealed the functional groups of EPS involved in interaction with the heavy metals. Owing to the sensitivity for the remaining heavy metals, these bioluminescent bacteria can be used further for the development of luminescence-based biosensor.

The possibility of using coffee silverskin, an industrial waste from the coffee roasting process, as an antifungal feedstock in wood preservative formulations was investigated. Silverskin hot water extract and its antifungal properties in vitro against Rhodonia (Poria) placenta, Gloeophyllum trabeum, and Trametes versicolor were characterized, and its in vitro effects on wood decay caused by Coniophora puteana were analyzed. A kinetic luminescent bacteria test was performed using Aliivibrio fischeri to measure the acute ecotoxicity of the silverskin extracts. The antifungal test showed 60–70% growth inhibition of the studied fungi at higher concentrations—3%—but did not meet the high inhibition—100%—of the commercial wood preservative. The phenolic compounds, such as chlorogenic acid and its derivatives, and caffeine derivatives, were the main constituents of the silverskin extracts and considered the responsible compounds of the fungal inhibition. The silverskin extracts were significantly less toxic than the commercial copper-based wood preservative. Revalorization of silverskin from industrial residues does not perform as a wood preservative but it remains a potential source of antifungal chemicals for wood preservative formulations.

Assessment of eco-toxicant using bioluminescent bacterial assay is a widely used and globally accepted method. In this work, a new luminescent bacterium was isolated from squid (Loligo duvauceli) and identified as Photobacterium leiognathi strain AK-MIE using 16S rRNA, phylogeny analysis. The predicted optimum conditions by RSM were 2.76% (w/v) NaCl, 2.28% (w/v) peptone, 0.34% (w/v) yeast extract, and pH 6.83 with 541,211.80 RLU of luminescent production whereas the predicted optimum conditions by ANN were 2.21% (w/v) NaCl, 2.27% (w/v) peptone, 0.39% (w/v) yeast extract, and pH 6.94 which produced 541,986.20 RLU. The validation analysis of both RSM and ANN show 0.60% and 0.69% deviation from the predicted results indicating that both models provided good quality predictions with ANN showing a superior data fitting capability for non-linear regression analysis. Toxicity tests show strain AK-MIE was sensitive to mercury (concentration causing 50% inhibition or IC50 of 0.00978 mg L − 1 ), followed by cadmium (IC50 of 0.5288 mg L − 1 ), copper IC50 of (0.8117 mg L − 1 ), silver (IC50 of 1.109 mg L − 1 ), and lead (IC50 of 10.71 mg L − 1 ) which are more sensitive than previously isolated luminescent bacteria, suggesting that strain AK-MIE has the potential to be used in toxicity assessment of heavy metals in the environment. Based on the field trial results, several sediment samples from industrial areas in Bangi, Selangor managed to inhibit the bioluminescence of strain AK-MIE. Validation method carried out using ICP-MS proved the presence of several toxic heavy metal elements.

Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) can degrade heavy metal complexes in wastewater to improve the removal efficiency of metals. However, the influences of AOP treatments on toxicity induced by metal complexes are not well understood. This study compared the toxicity induced by EDTA-copper (Cu) after UV/persulfate (PS) and UV/H2O2 treatments on luminescent bacteria and human HepG2 cells. The results showed that EDTA-Cu complexes decreased Cu toxicity in luminescent bacteria but increased the cytotoxicity in HepG2 cells, indicating species-specific toxicity. The UV/PS and UV/H2O2 treatments under most pH values and [oxidant]/[EDTA-Cu] conditions decreased the toxicity of EDTA-Cu in HepG2 cells but increased the toxicity in luminescent bacteria. When the ratio of [oxidant] to [EDTA-Cu] was 10, low toxicity in treated solutions was observed in both UV treatment processes. The alkaline precipitation treatment had a significant influence on toxicity reduction after UV/PS treatment; however, it had minimal influence on the UV/H2O2 treatment system. The Cu and total organic carbon (TOC) removal efficiency cannot completely explain the results of toxicity assays. EDTA-Cu intermediates might play important roles in changing the toxicity of EDTA-Cu after both UV treatments. This study provides insights into evaluating the treatment efficiency of UV/PS and UV/H2O2 on EDTA-Cu decomplexation.

Acute toxicities of anaerobic ammonia oxidation (ANAMMOX) substrates and four antibiotics from pharmaceutical wastewaters on ANAMMOX process were reported. Individual and joint acute toxicity assays were performed using 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50). Results showed that IC50 values and their 95% confidence interval of ammonium chloride (A), sodium nitrite (B), penicillin G-Na (C), polymyxin B sulfate (D), chloramphenicol (E) and kanamycin sulfate (F) were 2708.9 (2247.9–3169.9), 1475.4 (1269.9–1680.9), 5114.4 (4946.4–5282.4), 10.2 (1.8–18.6), 409.9 (333.7–486.1) and 5254.1 (3934.4–6573.8) mg L−1 respectively, suggesting toxicities were in the order of D > E > B > A > C > F. Joint acute toxicities of bicomponent mixtures A and B, C and D, C and F, D and F were independent; D and E, E and F were additive while C and E were synergistic. Joint acute toxicities of multicomponent mixtures were synergistic or additive. Luminescent bacteria test is an easy and robust method for forecasting the feasibility of ANAMMOX process for pharmaceutical wastewater treatment.

Mercury and its organic compounds have been of severe concern worldwide due to their damage to the ecosystem and human health. The development of effective and affordable technology to monitor and signal the presence of bioavailable mercury is an urgent need. The Mer gene is a mercury-responsive resistant gene, and a mercury-sensing recombinant luminescent bacterium using the Mer gene was constructed in this study. The mer operon from marine Pseudomonas putida strain SP1 was amplified and fused with prompterless luxCDABE in the pUCD615 plasmid within Escherichia coli cells, resulting in pTHE30-E. coli. The recombinant strain showed high sensitivity and specificity. The detection limit of Hg(2+) was 5nmol/L, and distinct luminescence could be detected in 30min. Cd(2+), Cu(2+), Zn(2+), Ca(2+), Pb(2+), Mg(2+), Mn(2+), and Al(3+) did not interfere with the detection over a range of 10(-5)-1mM. Application of recombinant luminescent bacteria testing in environmental samples has been a controversial issue: especially for metal-sensing recombinant strains, false negatives caused by high cytotoxicity are one of the most important issues when applying recombinant luminescent bacteria in biomonitoring of heavy metals. In this study, by establishing an internal standard approach, the false negative problem was overcome; furthermore, the method can also help to estimate the suspected mercury concentration, which ensures high detection sensitivity of bioavailable Hg(2+).

This paper discusses toxicity test results on sediments from the Terra Nova offshore oil development. The Terra Nova Field is located on the Grand Banks approximately 350 km southeast of Newfoundland (Canada). The amphipod ( Rhepoxynius abronius ) survival and solid phase luminescent bacteria ( Vibrio fischeri , or Microtox) assays were conducted on sediment samples collected from approximately 50 stations per program year around Terra Nova during baseline (1997), prior to drilling, and in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2010 after drilling began. The frequency of toxic responses in the amphipod toxicity test was low. Of the ten stations that were toxic in environmental effects monitoring (EEM) years, only one (station 30(FE)) was toxic in more than one year and could be directly attributed to Terra Nova project activities. In contrast, 65 (18%) of 364 EEM samples were toxic to Microtox. Microtox toxicity in EEM years was not related to distance from Terra Nova drill centres or concentrations of >C 10 –C 21 hydrocarbons or barium, the primary constituents of the synthetic-based drill muds used at Terra Nova. Of the variables tested, fines and strontium levels showed the strongest (positive) correlations with toxicity. Neither fines nor strontium levels were affected by drill cuttings discharge at Terra Nova, except at station 30(FE) (and that station was not toxic to Microtox). Benthic macro-invertebrate abundance, richness and diversity were greater in toxic than in non-toxic sediments. Therefore, Microtox responses indicating toxicity were associated with positive biological responses in the field. This result may have been an indirect function of the increased abundance of most invertebrate taxa in less sandy sediments with higher gravel content, where fines and strontium levels and, consequently, toxicity to Microtox were high; or chemical substances released by biodegradation of organic matter, where invertebrates are abundant, may be toxic to Microtox. Given the lack of association between Microtox results and discharge from Terra Nova, coupled with the confounding effects of other variables, the usefulness of Microtox toxicity tests within the context of environmental monitoring for the Terra Nova and, potentially, other offshore oil operations needs to be questioned. The amphipod toxicity tests showed that sediments in the vicinity of discharges of synthetic-based drilling mud cuttings are rarely toxic.

A photodegradation technology based on the combination of ultraviolet radiation with H2O2 (UV/H2O2) for degrading tri(chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCPP) was developed. In ultrapure water, a pseudo-first order reaction was observed, and the degradation rate constant reached 0.0035 min−1 (R2 = 0.9871) for 5 mg L−1 TCPP using 250 W UV light irradiation with 50 mg L−1 H2O2. In detail, the yield rates of Cl− and PO43− reached 0.19 mg L−1 and 0.58 mg L−1, respectively. The total organic carbon (TOC) removal rate was 43.02%. The pH value of the TCPP solution after the reaction was 3.46. The mass spectrometric detection data showed a partial transformation of TCPP into a series of hydroxylated and dechlorinated products. Based on the luminescent bacteria experimental data, the toxicity of TCPP products increased obviously as the reaction proceeded. In conclusion, degradation of high concentration TCPP in UV/H2O2 systems may result in more toxic substances, but its potential application for real wastewater is promising in the future after appropriate optimization, domestication and evaluation.

Luminescent bacterial test is a fast and sensitive method for acute toxicity assessment of water and wastewater. In this study, an improved toxicity testing method was developed using the freshwater luminescent bacteria Vibrio qinghaiensis sp.-Q67 that involved pretreatment of water samples with reverse osmosis (RO) to eliminate the interferences caused by nutrients in concentrated samples and to improve the reliability and sensitivity of the analysis. Because water samples contain low concentrations of several target toxic substances, rapid acute toxicity testing method that is commonly employed does not achieve enough sensitivity. The proposed RO pretreatment could effectively enrich organic and inorganic substances in water samples to enable a more effective and sensitive toxicity evaluation. The kinetic characteristics of toxicity of raw sewage and secondary effluent were evaluated based on the relative luminescence unit (RLU) curves and time-concentration-effect surfaces. It was observed that when the exposure time was prolonged to 8-h or longer, the bacteria reached the logarithmic growth stage. Hence, the stimulating effects of the coexisting ions (such as Na+, K+, NO3-) in the concentrated samples could be well eliminated. A 10-h exposure time in proposed Q67 test was found to quantitatively evaluate the toxicity of the organic and inorganic pollutants in the RO-concentrated samples. © 2013 Elsevier Inc.

Triclosan, one of the most widely used disinfectants, has been found to be toxic to animals and human beings. In this paper, triclosan was degraded on TiO 2 nanotube arrays, using a photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) process under UV illumination, with Na 2 SO 4 as the supporting electrolyte. The effect of bias potential was investigated and the results showed that 0 V was the most appropriate potential for the degradation of triclosan. In 30 min, 78.7% of triclosan had degraded during the PEC process. Intermediate analysis showed that 2,7-dichlorodibenzodioxin (DCDD) had formed during the degradation. The toxicity change during the PEC process was investigated using a luminescent bacteria test, with the results demonstrating that the toxicity of the reaction liquid decreased at the beginning and subsequently increased to a stable level. The indications were that some intermediates such as 2,7-dichlorodibenzodioxin was more toxic and stable than triclosan in the solution.

Aim To carry out the isolation and characterization of novel marine luminescent bacteria from Diu beach, India. Materials & methods In the present study attempt has been made to isolate luminescent bacterial species from marine water sampled from Diu beach, India, using standard plating method on nutrient medium. Obtained isolate was analyzed susceptibility against antibiotics and heavy metals in order to use them in bio-sensing system. Isolated bacterium was amplified for 16S rRNA gene by PCR and further identified by aligning through BLAST and MEGA software. Result The Vibrio rotiferianus when growing prominently at 22 °C shown tolerance to low concentration of heavy metals & resistance to few antibiotics which makes isolate, a potential bio-sensing agent. Further, molecular characterization including 16S rRNA gene and its phylogenetic analysis confirmed that the isolated strain as V. rotiferianus. Conclusion The use of pharmaceuticals products is on the rise and in turn its pollution is rising in an ecosystem. The isolated strain may act as a potential biosensing agent as it responded to change in luminescence for even nanomolar quantities of several heavy metals/antibiotics. In conclusion, study highlighted V. rotiferianus isolated from Diu beach could be utilized in detection and quantitative estimation of pollutant by change in luminescence level of V. rotiferianus.

Crude oil is a complex mixture of petroleum hydrocarbons (PHC) with distinct chemical, physical and toxicological properties relevant for contaminated site risk assessment. Ecotoxicological effects of crude oil distillation fractions on luminescent bacteria (Vibrio fischeri), earthworms (Dendrobaena hortensis) and invertebrates (Heterocypris incongruens) were tested using two spiked soils and their elutriates. Fraction 2 (F2) had an equivalent carbon number (ECN) range of >10 to 16, and F3 from >16 to 39. F2 showed a substantially higher ecotoxicological effect than F3 for Vibrio and Dendrobaena. In contrast, severe inhibition of Heterocypris by the poorly soluble F3 is attributed to mechanical organ blockage. Immediate sequestration of PHC to the organic matter-rich soil effected reduced toxicity for all organisms. This study indicates that a more differentiated consideration (i) of PHC mixtures based on ECN range and (ii) of model soil properties employed for ecotoxicity testing should be included into PHC-contaminated site risk assessment.

A lot of various applications of the Electronic Tongue (ET) related to the detection and quantification of taste and flavour of different products were reported so far. For obvious reasons, one relies upon human perception and taste panel marks working with ET in this domain. However, there is an unusual, albeit wide, realm of perception-related analysis based on the “marks” produced by other biological species, besides human beings, from different mammals to microorganisms. Thus, a series of methodologies, which are based on an ample variety of species (e.g. Daphnia, algae, unicellular organisms, luminescent bacteria and many others) were applied for the evaluation and monitoring of water quality and detection of acute water toxicity. The present paper deals with the application of the potentiometric multisensor system for water toxicity estimation in terms of the bioassay with three living test organisms: Daphnia magna , Chlorella vulgaris and Paramecium caudatum. The prediction of water toxicity with relative errors 15–26% (depending on the test object) is possible using PLS (projection on latent structures) regression from the data obtained by potentiometric multisensor system.

This study was focused on photodegradation of acetaminophen (AA) exposed to ultraviolet (UV) irradiation at 254 nm delivered by a system similar to that used for sterilization in sewage treatment plants. The degradation of AA during irradiation for up to 96 h was monitored by means of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Based on the mass/charge ratio ( m / z ) of the protonated ion and the mass fragmentation pattern in electrospray ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (ESI-TOF/MS/MS), the photoproduct was identified as 1-(2-amino-5-hydroxyphenyl)ethanone ( 1 ). Examination of toxicity by means of a luminescent bacteria test (ISO11348) indicated that AA solution was nontoxic, whereas photo-exposed AA solution was toxic (EC 50 : 29.46 mg/L). The toxicity of synthetic compound 1 was shown to account for a substantial part of the toxicity of photo-exposed AA. These results indicate the importance of investigating not only parent compounds, but also photoproducts the risk assessment of pharmaceuticals in aquatic environments.

When selecting a landfill leachate treatment method the contaminant composition of the leachate should be considered in order to obtain the most cost-effective treatment option. In this study the filter material pine bark was evaluated as a treatment for five landfill leachates originating from different cells of the same landfill in Sweden. The objective of the study was to determine the uptake, or release, of metals and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) during a leaching test using the pine bark filter material with the five different landfill leachates. Furthermore the change of toxicity after treatment was studied using a battery of aquatic bioassays assessing luminescent bacteria (Vibrio fischeri) acute toxicity (30-min Microtox®), immobility of the crustacean Daphnia magna, growth inhibition of the algae Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata and the aquatic plant Lemna minor; and genotoxicity with the bacterial Umu-C assay. The results from the toxicity tests and the chemical analysis were analyzed in a Principal Component Analysis and the toxicity of the samples before and after treatment was evaluated in a toxicity classification. The pine bark filter material reduced the concentrations of metal contaminants from the landfill leachates in the study, with some exceptions for Cu and Cd. The Zn uptake of the filter was high for heavily contaminated leachates (≥73%), although some desorption of zinc occurred in less contaminated waters. Some of the leachates may require further treatment due to discharge into a natural recipient in order to reduce the risk of possible biological effects. The difference in pH changes between the different leachates was probably due to variations in buffering capacity, affected by physicochemical properties of the leachate. The greatest desorption of phenol during filtration occurred in leachates with high conductivity or elevated levels of metals or salts. Generally, the toxicity classification of the leachates implies that although filter treatment with pine bark removes metal contaminants from the leachates effectively, it does not alter leachate toxicity noticeably. The leachates with the highest conductivity, pH and metal concentrations are most strongly correlated with an increased toxic response in the score plots of both untreated and treated leachates. This is in line with the toxicity classification of the leachate samples. The results from this study highlight the importance of evaluating treatment efficiency from the perspective of potential recipient effects, rather than in terms of residual concentrations of individual contaminants when treating waters with a complex contamination matrix, such as landfill leachates.

Total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) contaminated soil samples were collected from Shengli Oilfield of China. Toxicity analysis was carried out based on earthworm acute toxicity, plant growth experiment and luminescent bacteria test. The soil was contaminated by-petroleum hydrogcarbons with TPH concentration of 10.57%. With lethal and sub-lethal rate as endpoint, earthworm test showed that the LD50 (lethal dose 50%) values in 4 and 7 days were 1.45% and 1.37% respectively, and the inhibition rate of earthworm body weight increased with higher oil concentration. TPH pollution in the soil inhibited seed germination in both wheat and maize experiment when the concentration of petroleum was higher than 0.1%. The EC50 (effective concentration 50%) for germination is 3.04% and 2.86% in maize and wheat, respectively. While lower value of EC50 for root elongation was to be 1.11% and 1.64% in maize and wheat, respectively, suggesting higher sensitivity of root elongation on petroleum contamination in the soil. The EC50 value in luminescent bacteria test was 0.47% for petroleum in the contaminated soil. From the experiment result, it was concluded that TPH content of 1.5% is considered to be a critical value for plant growth and living of earthworm and 0.5% will affect the activity of luminescent bacteria.

The compositions of explosive wastewater generated from TNT (2,4,6-trinitrotoluene) purification stage were characterized by using UV–vis spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), high performance liquid chromatograph (HPLC) and gas chromatograph/mass spectroscopy (GC/MS). The acute toxicity was evaluated by bacterium bioluminescence assay using a freshwater luminescent bacterium (Vibrio qinghaiensis sp. Nov.) and a marine luminescent bacterium (Photobacterium phosphoreum). The results showed that the wastewater's biodegradability was poor due to the high amount of chemical oxygen demand (COD). The main organic components were dinitrotoluene sulfonates (DNTS) with small amount of TNT, dinitrotoluene (DNT), mononitrotoluene (MNT) and other derivatives of nitrobenzene. It was highly toxic to luminescent bacteria P. phosphoreum and V. qinghaiensis sp. Nov. After reaction time of 15 min, the relative concentration of toxic pollutants (expressed as reciprocal of dilution ratio of wastewater) at 50% of luminescence inhibition ratio was 5.32 × 10−4 for P. phosphoreu, while that was 4.34 × 10−4 for V. qinghaiensis. V. qinghaiensis is more sensitive and suitable for evaluating the wastewater's acute toxicity than P. phosphoreum. After adsorption by resin, the acute toxicity can be greatly reduced, which is helpful for further treatment by biological methods.

In the European Waste List (2000/532/EC as amended) the ash of municipal waste incineration is defined as a so called mirror entry. This waste can be classified as hazardous or non-hazardous depending on the content of hazardous substances and other risk properties. For the assignment of waste in mirror entries, 14 criteria are defined. One of the criteria is H14 "ecotoxic". In the presented study, the ecotoxicological potential of 12 ashes from different incineration plants has been assessed using biological test systems. The test battery included aquatic tests with eluates (algae, daphnids, and luminescent bacteria) and terrestrial tests with solid waste (plants, earthworms and bacteria). The test results revealed a clear ecotoxicological hazard potential for some of the MWI ashes. Despite the fact that fresh ashes were several times more toxic than aged ashes both groups did not differ consistently in terms of toxicity. The results show also that there is no correlation between the biological effects and the analyzed chemical compounds of the ash samples.

Electrochemical measurement of respiratory chain activity is a rapid and reliable screening for the toxicity on microorganisms. Here, we investigated in-vitro effects of toxin on Escherichia coli (E. coli) that was taken as a model microorganism incubated with ferricyanide. The current signal of ferrocyanide effectively amplified by ultramicroelectrode array (UMEA), which was proven to be directly related to the toxicity. Accordingly, a direct toxicity assessment (DTA) based on chronoamperometry was proposed to detect the effect of toxic chemicals on microorganisms. The electrochemical responses to 3,5-dichlorophenol (DCP) under the incubation times revealed that the toxicity reached a stable level at 60 min, and its 50% inhibiting concentration (IC50) was estimated to be 8.0 mg L−1. At 60 min incubation, the IC50 values for KCN and As2O3 in water samples were 4.9 mg L−1 and 18.3 mg L−1, respectively. But the heavy metal ions, such as Cu2+, Pb2+ and Ni2+, showed no obvious toxicity on E. coli. With the exception of Hg2+, it showed 40.0 mg L−1 IC50 value when E. coli was exposed to its solution for 60 min. The lower sensitivity of DTA for the heavy metal ions could be attributed to the toxicological endpoint and the experimental conditions used. All results suggest that the DTA is a sensitive, rapid and inexpensive alternative to on-site water and wastewater toxic analysis.

The photo-induced transformation in aqueous solution of hexaconazole and dimethomorph over irradiated titanium dioxide was studied. The investigation involved monitoring pesticides decomposition, identifying intermediate compounds, assessing mineralization, and evaluating toxicity of pesticides derivatives. HPLC/UV and HPLC/MS were used to follow the disappearance of the initial pesticides and the formation of intermediate products, while the acute toxicity was evaluated by using the Vibrio fischeri luminescent bacteria assay. Hexaconazole photocatalytic transformation proceeds through the formation of highly persistent compounds. The formation of cyanuric acid, a non-toxic compound refractory to photocatalytic treatment, was recognized. Conversely, the toxicity assays prove that neither hexaconazole nor its intermediates exhibit acute toxicity. Dimethomorph under photocatalytic treatment is completely mineralized within 14 h of irradiation. However, its transformation proceeds through the formation of toxic intermediates. A correlation exists between the evolution of the intermediate compounds and the toxicity profile, as the highest toxicity is measured when the intermediates with lower EC50 (hydroquinone and 4-chlorophenol) are formed.
