Aim: To investigate the transgenerational effect of maternal hyperglycemia on oxidative stress markers, lipid profile, glycemia, pancreatic beta (β)-cells, and reproductive outcomes in the F2 adult generation. Additionally, to expand the knowledge on transgenerational diabetes the F3 generation at birth will be evaluated., Methods: On day 5 of postnatal life female Sprague-Dawley rat newborns (F0 generation) were distributed into two groups: Diabetic (Streptozotocin-STZ, 70 mg/kg body weight, subcutaneous route) and Control rats. Adult female rats from the F0 generation and subsequently the F1 generation were mated to obtain the F2 generation, which was distributed into F2 generation (granddaughters) from control (F2&#95;C) and diabetic (F2&#95;D) rats. Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT), the area under the curve (AUC), blood biochemical analyses, and pancreatic morphology were analyzed before pregnancy. Reproductive outcomes were performed at the end of pregnancy. At birth, the glycemia and body weight of F3&#95;C and F3&#95;D rats were determined. p < 0.05 was considered significant., Results: F2&#95;D had higher body weight, triglyceride levels, and percentage of insulin-immunostained cells, contributing to glucose intolerance, and insulin resistance before pregnancy. At day 21 of pregnancy, the F2&#95;D showed increased embryonic losses before and after implantation (84.33 and 83.74 %, respectively). At birth, F3&#95;D presented hyperglycemia, and 16.3 % of newborns were large for pregnancy age (LGA)., Conclusion: Diabetes induction since the neonatal period in the first generation (F0) led to transgenerational (F2 and F3 generations) changes via the maternal lineage of female rats, confirming the relevance of control strictly the glycemia all the time., Competing Interests: The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper., (© 2024 The Authors. Cancer patients may have a dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and abnormal secretion of cortisol. Increased cortisol levels have been associated with worse prognosis in patients with different types of tumors. Although anxiety and depression can trigger an abnormal cortisol secretion, little is known regarding the influence of these emotional disorders on HPA axis dysregulation in cancer patients when evaluating together with demographic, clinicopathological and biobehavioral variables. This cross-sectional study analyzed the pre-treatment plasma cortisol levels of 133 patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and its association with demographic, clinicopathological, biobehavioral and psychological variables. Plasma cortisol levels were measured by electrochemiluminescence, and anxiety and depression symptoms were assessed using Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and Depression (BDI), respectively. Demographic, clinicopathological and biobehavioral data were collected from patients' medical records. Results from multivariate analysis showed that the occurrence of cancer-induced pain was predictive for higher cortisol levels (OR = 5.388, p = 0.003). Men with OSCC were 4.5 times more likely to have higher plasma cortisol levels than women (OR = 4.472, p = 0.018). The effect of sex on cortisol concentrations was lost in the adjusted model for clinical staging (OR = 2.945, p = 0.116). The absence of chronic alcohol consumption history was a protective factor for highest hormone concentrations in oral cancer patients (OR = 0.104, p = 0.004). Anxiety symptoms measured by BAI as "hands trembling" (OR = 0.192, p = 0.016) and being "nervous" (OR = 0.207, p = 0.0004) were associated with lower cortisol levels. In contrast, the feeling of "fear of losing control" was a risk factor for highest hormone concentrations (OR = 6.508, p = 0.0004). The global score and specific symptoms of depression measured by the BDI were not predictive for plasma hormone levels (p > 0.05). Together, our results show that pain, alcohol consumption and feeling fear are independent factors for increased systemic cortisol levels in patients with oral cancer. Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) is multivariate disease, clustered with socioeconomic and behavioral risk factors. Investigations about epidemiology estimative could be a prevention strategy., Aim: to investigate the prevalence of metabolic syndrome and its associated factors in adult population in Fernando de Noronha Archipelago (PE-Brazil)., Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed on a representative sample (N = 375) of adult residents of the region, aged 24-59 years, were harmonized according to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) criteria., Results: The prevalence of metabolic syndrome was 45 (12%) and, the age was associated with MetS, which increases the chances to MetS development around 3% respectively (OR: 1.03; CI 95%: 1.002-1.070 P 0.0384). Waist circumference was elevated in female population 266 (70.74%), however, levels of fasting blood glucose (304 [80.85%]), blood pressure (375 [100%]), TG (302 [80.32]), and low HDLc (297 [78.99]) presented normal biochemical values. There is no significative difference for male and female gender and, the social and behavior factors did not present significative association., Conclusion: The Fernando de Noronha presents lower prevalence of MetS thus, shows associations for elderly people. The waist circumference was elevated on female population. The results of this study provide further evidence and underscore the need for public health strategies that include education about MetS, promotion of cardiometabolic health, and prevention of undesirable outcomes such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease., (Copyright © 2018 Diabetes India. Background: The risk of cognitive impairment associated with Parkinson's disease (PD) is related to ageing. The role of body compartmentalization and associated metabolic dysfunctions, as a risk factor for dementia in PD is still not clear., Objective: To investigate body mass distribution, insulin resistance, and other parameters in patients without dementia, and those with dementia classified as compromised delayed memory., Subjects and Methods: We recorded body composition, basal levels of insulin resistance, and other data from 135 patients, who were followed for at least two years. The patients completed a Brief Cognitive Battery test. Patients with delayed recall memory impairment were assessed using the Mattis dementia rating scale., Results: There was a correlation between age and the patient's scores. Age was negatively correlated with scores on all of the screening battery subtests (p ≤ 0.001), while formal education was positively correlated with the test scores. Insulin resistance was higher in non-demented patients compared to patients with impaired memory (p = 0.0027). There was no association between body composition and cognitive dysfunction in patients with PD., Conclusions: The results of this study indicate an apparent decrease in insulin resistance associated with cognitive impairment in PD.
