Mirror neurons (MNs) were first described in a seminal paper in 1992 as a class of monkey premotor cells discharging during both action execution and observation. Despite their debated origin and function, recent studies in several species, from birds to humans, revealed that beyond MNs properly so called, a variety of cell types distributed among multiple motor, sensory, and emotional brain areas form a 'mirror mechanism' more complex and flexible than originally thought, which has an evolutionarily conserved role in social interaction. Simulation theories of social cognition abound in the literature, but it is often unclear what simulation means and how it works. The discovery of mirror neurons, responding both to action execution and observation, suggested an embodied approach to mental simulation. Over the past few years this approach has been hotly debated and alternative accounts have been proposed. We discuss these accounts and argue that they fail to capture the uniqueness of embodied simulation (ES). Many neurons in the monkey ventral premotor area F5 discharge selectively when the monkey grasps an object with a specific grip. Of these, the motor neurons are active only during grasping execution, whereas the visuomotor neurons also respond to object presentation. Here we assessed whether the activity of 90 task-related F5 neurons recorded from two macaque monkeys during the performance of a visually-guided grasping task can be used as input to pattern recognition algorithms aiming to decode different grips. The features exploited for the decoding were the mean firing rate and the mean interspike interval calculated over different time spans of the movement period (all neurons) or of the object presentation period (visuomotor neurons). A support vector machine (SVM) algorithm was applied to the neural activity recorded while the monkey grasped two sets of objects. The original set contained three objects that were grasped with different hand shapes, plus three others that were grasped with the same grip, whereas the six objects of the special set were grasped with six distinctive hand configurations. The algorithm predicted with accuracy greater than 95% all the distinct grips used to grasp the objects. The classification rate obtained using the first 25% of the movement period was 90%, whereas it was nearly perfect using the entire period. At least 16 neurons were needed for accurate performance, with a progressive increase in accuracy as more neurons were included. Classification errors revealed by confusion matrices were found to reflect similarities of hand grips used to grasp the objects. The use of visuomotor neurons' responses to object presentation yielded grip classification accuracy similar to that obtained from actual grasping execution. The implications of the discovery of mirroring mechanisms and embodied simulation for empathetic responses to images in general, and to works of visual art in particular, have not yet been assessed. Here, we address this issue and we challenge the primacy of cognition in responses to art. We propose that a crucial element of esthetic response consists of the activation of embodied mechanisms encompassing the simulation of actions, emotions and corporeal sensation, and that these mechanisms are universal. This basic level of reaction to images is essential to understanding the effectiveness both of everyday images and of works of art. Historical, cultural and other contextual factors do not preclude the importance of considering the neural processes that arise in the empathetic understanding of visual artworks.

In this article we provide a unifying neural hypothesis on how individuals understand the actions and emotions of others. Our main claim is that the fundamental mechanism at the basis of the experiential understanding of others' actions is the activation of the mirror neuron system. A similar mechanism, but involving the activation of viscero-motor centers, underlies the experiential understanding of the emotions of others.

A new class of visuomotor neuron has been recently discovered in the monkey's premotor cortex: mirror neurons. These neurons respond both when a particular action is performed by the recorded monkey and when the same action, performed by another individual, is observed. Mirror neurons appear to form a cortical system matching observation and execution of goal-related motor actions. Experimental evidence suggests that a similar matching system also exists in humans. What might be the functional role of this matching system? One possible function is to enable an organism to detect certain mental states of observed conspecifics. This function might be part of, or a precursor to, a more general mind-reading ability. Two different accounts of mind-reading have been suggested. According to `theory theory', mental states are represented as inferred posits of a naive theory. According to `simulation theory', other people's mental states are represented by adopting their perspective: by tracking or matching their states with resonant states of one's own. The activity of mirror neurons, and the fact that observers undergo motor facilitation in the same muscular groups as those utilized by target agents, are findings that accord well with simulation theory but would not be predicted by theory theory.
