Wildfire is a major source of biomass burning aerosols, which greatly impact Earth climate. Tree species in North America (NA) boreal forests can support high-intensity crown fires, resulting in elevated injection height and longer lifetime (on the order of months) of the wildfire aerosols. Given the long lifetime, the properties of aged NA wildfire aerosols are required to understand and quantify their effects on radiation and climate. Here we present comprehensive characterization of climatically relevant properties, including optical properties and cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) activities of aged NA wildfire aerosols, emitted from the record-breaking Canadian wildfires in August 2017. Despite the extreme injection height of ~12 km, some of the wildfire plumes descended into the marine boundary layer in the eastern North Atlantic over a period of ~2 weeks, owing to the dry intrusions behind mid-latitude cyclones. The aged wildfire aerosols have high single scattering albedos at 529 nm (ω 529 ; 0.92-0.95) while low absorption Ångström exponents (Å abs ) at 464 nm/648 nm (0.7-0.9). In comparison, Å abs of fresh/slightly aged ones are typically 1.4-3.5. This low Å abs indicates a nearly complete loss of brown carbon, likely due to bleaching and/or evaporation, during the long-range transport. The nearly complete loss suggests that on global average, direct radiative forcing of BrC may be minor. Combining Mie calculations and the measured aerosol hygroscopicity, volatility and size distributions, we show that the high ω 529 and low Å abs values are best explained by an external mixture of non-absorbing organic particles and absorbing particles of large BC cores (>~110 nm diameter) with thick non-absorbing coatings. The accelerated descent of the wildfire plume also led to strong increase of CCN concentration at the supersaturation levels representative of marine low clouds. The hygroscopicity parameter, κ CCN , of the aged wildfire aerosols varies from 0.2 to 0.4, substantially lower than that of background marine boundary layer aerosols. However, the high fraction of particles with large diameter (i.e., within accumulation size ranges, ~100-250 nm) compensates for the low values of κ, and as a result, the aged NA wildfire aerosols contribute more efficiently to CCN population. These results provide direct evidence that the long-range transported NA wildfires can strongly influence CCN concentration in remote marine boundary layer, therefore the radiative properties of marine low clouds. Behavioral adaptations exhibited by two African fossorial mammals for the reception of vibrational signals are discussed. The Namib Desert golden mole (Eremitalpa granti namibensis) is a functionally blind, nocturnal insectivore in the family Chrysochloridae that surface forages nightly in the Namib desert. Both geophone and microphone recordings in the substrate suggest that the golden mole is able to detect termite colonies and other prey items solely using seismic cues. This animal exhibits a hypertrophied malleus, an adaptation favoring detection of low-frequency signals. In a field study of the Cape mole-rat (Georychus capensis), a subterranean rodent in the family Bathyergidae, both seismic and auditory signals were tested for their propagation characteristics. This solitary animal is entirely fossorial and apparently communicates with its conspecifics by drumming its hind legs on the burrow floor. Auditory signals attenuate rapidly in the substrate, whereas vibratory signals generated in one burrow are easily detectable in neighboring burrows. The sensitivity to substrate vibrations in two orders of burrowing mammals suggests that this sense is likely to be widespread within this taxon and may serve as a neuroethological model for understanding the evolution of vibrational communication. Neuroethological implications of these findings are discussed.

In previous experiments we have studied the development of grafts of embryonic septal tissues implanted alongside the hippocampal formation of neonatal rats. In the present study we examined intracerebral implants of corpus striatum, a brain region that contains acetylcholinesterase-positive cells and does not normally project to the hippocampal formation, in order to evaluate the possibility that neurotransmitter identity may be involved in mechanisms guiding patterns of afferent growth and connectivity. Implant cavities were made in the entorhinal cortices of neonatal rat recipients and 3-6 days later embryonic striatal tissues were grafted to these preformed cavities. Implants were examined with acetylcholinesterase histochemistry one month after implantation. Grafts of embryonic striatal tissues did not survive implantation when the implant was introduced at the same time as the cavity was made. Grafts of corpora striata containing acetylcholinesterase-positive neurons were found in 7 of 11 rats in the delayed implant paradigm and, in all but one of these animals, acetylcholinesterase was present within those terminal laminae in the ipsilateral hippocampus and dentate gyrus that normally receive cholinergic input from the septal area. These findings suggest that cues underlying the development of specific connections between native (and implanted) septal efferents and hippocampal target neurons may be recognized by ingrowing acetylcholinesterase-reactive fibers from striatal implants.

The technique of tissue implantation into neonatal rats was used to assess mechanisms underlying the development of afferent lamination in the rat hippocampal formation. Septal nuclei, dissected from the brains of rat embryos (E17-E20), were implanted into the occipital or entorhinal cortex of 2--3 day old neonates that simultaneously received fimbrial transections to remove hippocampal innervation by native septal efferents. As visualized with acetylcholinesterase (AChE) histochemistry, the distribution of enzyme activity in implant-innervated hippocampi is qualitatively identical to the pattern in unoperated animals. Fibers from septal implants placed into the entorhinal cortex, appear to interact with commissural/associational afferents and produce altered laminar zones in the dentate gyrus.
