In recent years, several fitting techniques have been presented to reconstruct the parameters of a plate from its Lamb wave dispersion curves. Published studies show that these techniques can yield high accuracy results and have the potential of reconstructing several parameters at once. The precision with which parameters can be reconstructed by inverting Lamb wave dispersion curves, however, remains an open question of fundamental importance to many applications. In this work, we introduce a method of analyzing dispersion curves that yields quantitative information on the precision with which the parameters can be extracted. In our method, rather than employing error minimization algorithms, we compare a target dispersion curve to a database of theoretical ones that covers a given parameter space. By calculating a measure of dissimilarity (error) for every point in the parameter space, we reconstruct the distribution of the error in that space, beside the location of its minimum. We then introduce dimensionless quantities that describe the distribution of this error, thus yielding information about the spread of similar curves in the parameter space. We demonstrate our approach by considering both idealized and realistic scenarios, analyzing the dispersion curves obtained numerically for a plate and experimentally for a pipe. Acoustic wave propagation in ultrasonic flow measurements is typically assumed to be linear and reciprocal. However, if the transmitting transducer generates a sufficiently high pressure, nonlinear wave propagation effects become significant. In flow measurements, this would translate into more information to estimate the flow and therefore a higher precision relative to the linear case. In this work, we investigate how the generated harmonics can be used to measure flow. Measurements in a custom-made flow loop and simulations using the Khokhlov-Zabolotskaya-Kuznetsov (KZK) equation will show that the second harmonic component provides similar transit time differences to those obtained from the fundamental component, their linear combination results in more precise flow measurements compared to the estimations with the fundamental component alone., (Copyright © 2021 The Authors. Left ventricular flow is intrinsically complex, three-dimensional and unsteady. Its features are susceptible to cardiovascular pathology and treatment, in particular to surgical interventions involving the valves (mitral valve replacement). To improve our understanding of intraventricular fluid mechanics and the impact of various types of prosthetic valves thereon, we have developed a custom-designed versatile left ventricular phantom with anatomically realistic moving left ventricular membrane. A biological, a tilting disc and a bileaflet valve (in two different orientations) were mounted in the mitral position and tested under the same settings. To investigate 3D flow within the phantom, a four-view tomographic particle image velocimetry setup has been implemented. The results compare side-by-side the evolution of the 3D flow topology, vortical structures and kinetic energy in the left ventricle domain during the cardiac cycle. Except for the tilting disc valve, all tested prosthetic valves induced a crossed flow path, where the outflow crosses the inflow path, passing under the mitral valve. The biological valve shows a strong jet with a peak velocity about twice as high compared to all mechanical heart valves, which makes it easier to penetrate deeply into the cavity. Accordingly, the peak kinetic energy in the left ventricle in case of the biological valve is about four times higher than the mechanical heart valves. We conclude that the tomographic particle imaging velocimetry setup provides a useful ground truth measurement of flow features and allows a comparison of the effects of different valve types on left ventricular flow patterns., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Blood flow patterns in the human left ventricle (LV) have shown relation to cardiac health. However, most studies in the literature are limited to a few patients and results are hard to generalize. This study aims to provide a new framework to generate more generalized insights into LV blood flow as a function of changes in anatomy and wall motion. In this framework, we studied the four-dimensional blood flow in LV via computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in conjunction with a statistical shape model (SSM), built from segmented LV shapes of 150 subjects. We validated results in an in-vitro dynamic phantom via time-resolved optical particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements. This combination of CFD and the SSM may be useful for systematically assessing blood flow patterns in the LV as a function of varying anatomy and has the potential to provide valuable data for diagnosis of LV functionality., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. The information in an ultrasound image depends on the frequency that is used. In a clinical examination it may therefore be beneficial to generate ultrasound images acquired at multiple frequencies, which is difficult to achieve with conventional transducers. Capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducers (CMUTs) offer a frequency response that is tunable by the bias voltage. In this study we investigate this frequency tunability for ultrasonic imaging. We characterized a CMUT array operated at bias voltages up to three times higher than the collapse-voltage. All elements of the array were connected to a single transmit and receive channel through a bias circuit. We quantified the transmit-receive and transmit sensitivity as a function of frequency for a range of bias voltages. Impulse response measurements show that the center frequency is modifiable between 8.7MHz and 15.3MHz with an applied bias voltage of -50V to -170V. The maximum transmit sensitivity is 52kPa/V at a center frequency of 9.0MHz with an applied bias voltage of -105V. The -3dB transmit range in center frequency accessible with the variable bias voltage is 6.7-15.5MHz. This study shows that a collapse-mode CMUT can operate efficiently at multiple center frequencies when the driving pulse and the bias voltage are optimized. We demonstrate the usefulness of frequency tuning by comparing images at different optimal combinations of driving frequency and bias voltage, acquired by linearly moving the transducer across a tissue mimicking phantom., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier B.V. Submicron droplets of liquid perfluorocarbon converted into microbubbles with applied ultrasound have been studied, for a number of years, as potential next generation extravascular ultrasound contrast agents. In this work, we conduct an initial ultra-high-speed optical imaging study to examine the vaporization of submicron droplets and observe the newly created microbubbles in the first microseconds after vaporization. It was estimated that single pulses of ultrasound at 10 MHz with pressures within the diagnostic range are able to vaporize on the order of at least 10% of the exposed droplets. However, only part of the newly created microbubbles survives immediately following vaporization - the bubbles may recondense back into the liquid droplet state within microseconds of nucleation. The probability of bubble survival within the first microseconds of vaporization was shown to depend on ultrasound excitation pressure as well as on bubble coalescence during vaporization, a behavior influenced by the presence of coating material on the newly created bubbles. The results of this study show for the first time that although initial vaporization of droplets is necessary to create echogenic bubbles, additional factors, such as coalescence and bubble shell properties, are important and should be carefully considered for the production of microbubbles for use in medical imaging., (Crown Copyright © 2013. Recently, the measurement of phase transfer functions (PTFs) of piezoelectric transducers has received more attention. These PTFs are useful for e.g. coding and interference based imaging methods, and ultrasound contrast microbubble research. Several optical and acoustic methods to measure a transducer's PTF have been reported in literature. The optical methods require a setup to which not all ultrasound laboratories have access to. The acoustic methods require accurate distance and acoustic wave speed measurements. A small error in these leads to a large error in phase, e.g. an accuracy of 0.1% on an axial distance of 10cm leads to an uncertainty in the PTF measurement of ±97° at 4MHz. In this paper we present an acoustic pulse-echo method to measure the PTF of a transducer, which is based on linear wave propagation and only requires an estimate of the wave travel distance and the acoustic wave speed. In our method the transducer is excited by a monofrequency sine burst with a rectangular envelope. The transducer initially vibrates at resonance (transient regime) prior to the forcing frequency response (steady state regime). The PTF value of the system is the difference between the phases deduced from the transient and the steady state regimes. Good agreement, to within 7°, was obtained between KLM simulations and measurements on two transducers in a 1-8MHz frequency range. The reproducibility of the method was ±10°, with a systematic error of 2° at 1MHz increasing to 16° at 8MHz. Recent optical and acoustical studies have shown a threshold behaviour in the response of phospholipid-coated contrast agents, for a certain range of sizes. Below the acoustic pressure threshold, the microbubbles' scattering efficacy is significantly reduced compared to that above the threshold. Here we investigate the clinical relevance of the observed threshold behaviour. A cardiac ultrasound scanner system was used to analyse the pressure-dependence of the scatter intensity. The scattering of a native suspension of a phospholipid-coated contrast agent was compared to that of a suspension in which microbubbles with a size larger than 3.0 microm in diameter were extracted. A power modulation scheme at the fundamental frequency was applied. After linearly scaling and subtracting the B-mode images recorded at 70 and 200 kPa, the contrast-to-tissue ratio (CTR) of the native suspension was 3.2dB, whereas the CTR of the filtered suspension was 20 dB. The 17 dB difference is attributed to the threshold behaviour. Well-established ultrasound imaging techniques such as fundamental power modulation imaging could benefit from the pressure-dependent scattering properties of this type of contrast microbubbles.

Current medical diagnostic echo systems are mostly using harmonic imaging. This means that a fundamental frequency (e.g., 2 MHz) is transmitted and the reflected and scattered higher harmonics (e.g., 4 and 6 MHz), produced by nonlinear propagation, are recorded. The signal level of these harmonics is usually low and a well-defined transfer function of the receiving transducer is required. Studying the acoustic response of a single contrast bubble, which has an amplitude in the order of a few Pascal, is another area where an optimal receive transfer function is important. We have developed three methods to determine the absolute transfer function of a transducer. The first is based on a well-defined wave generated by a calibrated source in the far field. The receiving transducer receives the calibrated wave and from this the transfer functions can be calculated. The second and third methods are based on the reciprocity of the transducer. The second utilizes a calibrated hydrophone to measure the transmitted field. In the third method, a pulse is transmitted by the transducer, which impinges on a reflector and is received again by the same transducer. In both methods, the response combined with the transducer impedance and beam profiles enables the calculation of the transfer function. The proposed methods are useful to select the optimal piezoelectric material (PZT, single crystal) for transducers used in reception only, such as in certain 3D scanning designs and superharmonic imaging, and for selected experiments like single bubble behavior. We tested and compared these methods on two unfocused single element transducers, one commercially available (radius 6.35 mm, centre frequency 2.25 MHz) the other custom built (radius 0.75 mm, centre frequency 4.3 MHz). The methods were accurate to within 15%.

A number of recent studies have indicated the potential of ultrasound contrast agent imaging at high ultrasound frequencies. However, the acoustic properties of microbubbles at frequencies above 10 MHz remain poorly understood at present. In this study we characterize the high frequency attenuation properties of (1) BR14, (2) BR14 that has been mechanically filtered (1 and 2 microm pore sizes) to exclude larger bubbles, and (3) the micron to submicron agent BG2423. A narrowband pulse-echo substitution method is employed with a series of four transducers covering the frequency range from 2 to 50 MHz. For BR14, attenuation decreases rapidly from 2 to 10 MHz and then more gradually from 10 to 50 MHz. For 2 microm filtration, the attenuation peaks between 10 and 15 MHz. For 1 microm filtration, attenuation continues to rise until 50 MHz. The agent BG2423 exhibits a diffuse attenuation peak in the range of 15-25 MHz and remains high until 50 MHz. These results demonstrate a strong influence of bubble size on high frequency attenuation curves, with bubble diameters of 1-2 microm and below having more pronounced acoustic activity at frequencies above 10 MHz.

Nitric oxide (NO) has been implicated in smooth muscle relaxation. Its use has been widespread in cardiology. Due to the effective scavenging of NO by hemoglobin, however, the drug has to be applied locally or in large quantities, to have the effect desired. We propose the use of encapsulated microbubbles that act as a vehicle to carry the gas to a region of interest. By applying a burst of high-amplitude ultrasound, the shell encapsulating the gas can be cracked. Consequently, the gas is released upon which its dissolution and diffusion begins. This process is generally referred to as (ultra)sonic cracking. To test if the quantities of released gas are high enough to allow for NO-delivery in small vessels (ø<200 microm), we analyzed high-speed optical recordings of insonified stiff-shelled microbubbles. These microbubbles were subjected to ultrasonic cracking using 0.5 or 1.7 MHz ultrasound with mechanical index MI>0.6. The mean quantity released from a single microbubble is 1.7 fmol. This is already more than the NO production of a 1mm long vessel with a 50 microm diameter during 100 ms. However, we simulated that the dissolution time of typical released NO microbubbles is equal to the half-life time of NO in whole blood due to scavenging by hemoglobin (1.8 ms), but much smaller than the extravascular half-life time of NO (>90 ms). We conclude that ultrasonic cracking can only be a successful means for nitric oxide delivery, if the gas is released in or near the red blood cell-free plasma next to the endothelium. A complicating factor in the in vivo situation is the variation in blood pressure. Although our simulations and acoustic measurements demonstrate that the dissolution speed of free gas increases with the hydrostatic pressure, the in vitro acoustic amplitudes suggest that the number of released microbubbles decreases at higher hydrostatic pressures. This indicates that ultrasonic cracking mostly occurs during the expansion phase.

In a preceding study a new technique to non-invasively measure the bladder volume on the basis of non-linear wave propagation was validated. It was shown that the harmonic level generated at the posterior bladder wall increases for larger bladder volumes. A dedicated transducer is needed to further verify and implement this approach. This transducer must be capable of both transmission of high-pressure waves at fundamental frequency and reception of up to the third harmonic. For this purpose, a multi-layer transducer was constructed using a single element PZT transducer for transmission and a PVDF top-layer for reception. To determine feasibility of the multi-layer concept for bladder volume measurements, and to ensure optimal performance, an equivalent mathematical model on the basis of KLM-circuit modeling was generated. This model was obtained in two subsequent steps. Firstly, the PZT transducer was modeled without PVDF-layer attached by means of matching the model with the measured electrical input impedance. It was validated using pulse-echo measurements. Secondly, the model was extended with the PVDF-layer. The total model was validated by considering the PVDF-layer as a hydrophone on the PZT transducer surface and comparing the measured and simulated PVDF responses on a wave transmitted by the PZT transducer. The obtained results indicated that a valid model for the multi-layer transducer was constructed. The model showed feasibility of the multi-layer concept for bladder volume measurements. It also allowed for further optimization with respect to electrical matching and transmit waveform. Additionally, the model demonstrated the effect of mechanical loading of the PVDF-layer on the PZT transducer.

Improved endocardial border delineation with the application of contrast agents should allow for less complex and faster tracing algorithms for left ventricular volume analysis. We developed a fast rotating phased array transducer for 3D imaging of the heart with harmonic capabilities making it suitable for contrast imaging. In this study the feasibility of 3D harmonic contrast imaging is evaluated in vitro. A commercially available tissue mimicking flow phantom was used in combination with Sonovue. Backscatter power spectra from a tissue and contrast region of interest were calculated from recorded radio frequency data. The spectra and the extracted contrast to tissue ratio from these spectra were used to optimize the excitation frequency, the pulse length and the receive filter settings of the transducer. Frequencies ranging from 1.66 to 2.35 MHz and pulse lengths of 1.5, 2 and 2.5 cycles were explored. An increase of more than 15 dB in the contrast to tissue ratio was found around the second harmonic compared with the fundamental level at an optimal excitation frequency of 1.74 MHz and a pulse length of 2.5 cycles. Using the optimal settings for 3D harmonic contrast recordings volume measurements of a left ventricular shaped agar phantom were performed. Without contrast the extracted volume data resulted in a volume error of 1.5%, with contrast an accuracy of 3.8% was achieved. The results show the feasibility of accurate volume measurements from 3D harmonic contrast images. Further investigations will include the clinical evaluation of the presented technique for improved assessment of the heart.

Previously, we have shown that for a single bubble, using chirps as the excitation signal improves both the linear and the non-linear response. Computer simulations of randomly distributed contrast agent bubbles show an increase of 10-13 dB in response when comparing pulse excitations with chirp excitations that have equal bandwidths and peak amplitudes. Second harmonic compression of simulated bubble echoes with chirp excitation shows low side-lobe levels and limited loss of axial resolution when compared to pulse excitation. Experimental results from water tank measurements with SonoVue contrast agent are in agreement with computer simulations showing increased signal-to-noise ratio and an increase of approximately 12 dB at the second harmonic when comparing pulse and chirp excitation.

Radionuclides have shown to be effective in tumour therapy. However, the side effects determine the maximum deliverable dose. Recently, it has been demonstrated that cells can be permeabilised through sonoporation using ultrasound and contrast microbubbles. The use of sonoporation in treatment of tumours may increase the anti-tumour efficacy of radionuclide treatment. The mechanisms as well as the effects sonoporation in tumour treatment strategies are still not understood. The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of ultrasound and contrast microbubbles on the internalisation of the radionuclide (111)In-DOTA-Tyr(3)-octreotate in tumour cells. To optimize ultrasound settings for ultrasound adjunctive tumour therapy we incubated rat pancreatic CA20948 tumour cells with two dyes (MW 40 and 70 kDa). The uptake levels were compared with cells treated with ultrasound and contrast microbubbles for different ultrasound settings. The highest molecular uptake was found with addition of contrast microbubbles (ratio of 10 bubbles to 1 cell) and with the ultrasound setting: duty cycle 0.013%, mechanical index (MI) 0.42, and treatment times of 30 and 60 min. These settings were used to enhance the internalisation of (111)In-DOTA-Tyr(3)-octreotate. We found a 160% higher internalisation of (111)In-DOTA-Tyr(3)-octreotate by tumour cells adjunctively treated with ultrasound and contrast microbubbles compared to untreated cells. These results show that adjunctive tumour treatment with the radionuclide (111)In-DOTA-Tyr(3)-octreotate and ultrasound contrast microbubbles may be feasible. When using adjunctive ultrasound contrast microbubble treatment, a lower radionuclide doses are required to reach the same anti-tumour effect.

This paper describes a noninvasive method to measure local hydrostatic pressures in fluid filled cavities. The method is based on the disappearance time of a gas bubble, as the disappearance time is related to the hydrostatic pressure. When a bubble shrinks, its response to ultrasound changes. From this response, the disappearance time, and with it the hydrostatic pressure, can be determined. We investigated the applicability of the gases Ar, C(3)F(8), Kr, N(2), Ne, and SF(6), based on their diffusive properties. For pressure measurements with a limited duration, e.g. 150 ms, Kr and Ar bubbles are most suitable, since they are most sensitive to pressure change. If there is also a limitation to bubble size, e.g. a maximum diameter of 6 microm, SF(6) is most suitable. We present improvements of a method that correlates the duration of the decay of the fundamental ultrasound response to the hydrostatic overpressure. We propose to correlate the duration until subharmonic occurrence in combination with its decay, to hydrostatic overpressure, since the subharmonic decays more rapidly than the fundamental response. For a dissolving Ar gas bubble with an initial diameter of 14 microm, the overpressure can be determined 4 times as precise from the decay of the subharmonic response as from the decay of the fundamental response. Overpressures as small as 11 mmHg may be discriminated with this method.

The behavior of ultrasound contrast agents depends highly on the acoustic pressure of the insonified ultrasound wave. For low pressure the expansion and compression is linear to the pressure, for medium acoustic pressure nonlinear behavior starts to occur and for high pressures, but still in the diagnostic range transient scattering can be noticed, resulting in an enhanced scattering followed by a disappearance of the bubble. The nonlinear and transient regime can be utilized for imaging of the contrast agent in or nearby tissue. The magnitude of the nonlinear signal from the contrast has to compete with the nonlinear component of the ultrasound wave, which is generated during propagation. It is shown that contrast is superior to tissue when using low frequencies and imaging the third or fourth harmonic of the transmitted frequency.

The challenge in ultrasound contrast imaging is a better discrimination between the perfused tissue and the contrast bubbles, which is usually expressed by contrast to tissue ratio (CTR). Imaging based on the second harmonic frequency showed a higher CTR than imaging at the fundamental frequency. However, because of nonlinear propagation of ultrasound waves, harmonic frequencies are generated. These harmonic frequencies will be linearly reflected by the tissue and therefore limit the CTR at the second harmonic frequency. In order to reduce the scattering of tissue at harmonic frequencies and by that increase the CTR, nonlinear distortion has to be reduced. We demonstrate in this study that the CTR increases with the harmonic number. The increase is substantial when transmitting at lower frequencies. To take advantage of the higher harmonics (third, fourth, fifth and the ultraharmonics and termed here super harmonics), we have developed a new phased array transducer with a wide frequency band. In-vitro measurements using the new probe show an increase of 40 dB of the CTR for super harmonic components over the conventional second harmonic system. The increase in CTR is in agreement with the calculations using existing models for the response of encapsulated bubbles and known theory of nonlinear propagation.

In the early days, it was believed that ultrasound contrast agents (UCA) could be sufficiently detected and imaged with the conventional imaging methods nowadays referred to as fundamental imaging. Newer imaging techniques proved to be more sensitive and are based on specific properties of the UCA. In general, these new characteristics involve non-linear and transient characteristics of contrast agents that appear at the high end of the diagnostic acoustic intensity. Imaging modalities used today for UCA are, besides fundamental imaging, second harmonic imaging, power Doppler, harmonic power Doppler, pulse inversion and pulse inversion Doppler, multi-pulse imaging and subharmonic imaging. Although the results of conventional second harmonic imaging are still not optimal for perfusion imaging applications, in combination with Doppler techniques (colour Doppler, power Doppler) it is one of the most sensitive techniques currently available in terms of agent-to-tissue ratio. Further improvements in current and future detection methods demand a complete understanding of the ultrasound-UCA interaction.

Although ultrasound is used extensively in medical therapies and diagnostics, it has been recognized only recently as a method for external controlled diversity of drugs. In this paper, firstly, a literature review on drug delivery and the combination with ultrasound is given. Then an experiment is described on measuring the release of a model drug (hexabrix) under ultrasound irradiation, from a polymer carrier.

The goal standard of contrast echocardiography is the absolute measure of myocardial perfusion using a contrast agent. Actually, several contrast agents are developed. All these agents show left ventricular opacification after intravenous injection. However, none of these agents shows an acceptable enhancement of the myocardium yet using conventional imaging techniques. The explanation of this phenomenon should be easy by measuring the acoustic characteristics of the contrast agent and then making a comparison of these characteristics with those of the myocardium. In this study we present definitions of standard acoustic parameters of ultrasound contrast agent, the backscatter coefficient Bs and the scattering-to-attenuation ratio STAR. Afterwards, considering an intravenous injection of the contrast agent, and taking into account the effects of lung filtering and cardiac pressure, the standard properties of contrast agents are determined in different sites: right ventricle (before lung passage), left ventricle (after lung passage and taking into account the pressure effect) and in the coronary system. Calculations showed that the acoustic properties are considerably influenced by these two effects: lung filtering and cardiac pressure. Comparison of these properties with the tissue properties (myocardium) is then performed. This determines the contribution of the contrast agent to the enhancement of the tissue visualization. The simulations are performed on Albunex microspheres. The results reveal that the difference between scattering of the myocardium and scattering of intravenously injected Albunex is too slight to be visible on an echographic image.

This study was designed to determine the differences between young and elderly people on the perceived intensity and pleasantness of sucrose in foods, in relation to their food intake. First, a group of 35 young subjects (mean age: 22 +/- 2 years) and 29 elderly subjects (mean age: 79 +/- 6 years) judged the intensity and the pleasantness of 5 series of breakfast items: orange lemonade, strawberry jam, strawberry yoghurt, chocolate paste, and grain porridge, each with 5 geometrically spaced sucrose concentration levels. On average, the elderly people had a lower slope of the sucrose psychophysical function. Optimal preferred sucrose concentrations were higher for the elderly compared to the young. The second phase in the study concerned the effects of the different optimal sucrose concentrations in foods on food intake. The second experiment dealt with 2 different optimal preferred sucrose concentrations (elderly vs. young subjects) in the food items: orange lemonade, strawberry and blueberry jam, and strawberry and blueberry yoghurt, served during breakfast. A group of 33 young people (mean age: 23 +/- 2 years) and 25 elderly subjects (mean age: 82 +/- 5 years) participated in a crossover study of 2 5-day (breakfast) treatments. Subjects are ad lib from these foods and other items such as bread, coffee, and tea. The results showed that the sucrose concentration had no effect on the absolute amount consumed, although total energy intake of the breakfast increased with the higher sucrose foods. No clear difference was found in pleasantness between the 2 breakfasts with the different sucrose concentrations. These findings indicate that a flavor concentration evaluated as being most pleasant by the elderly with the help of small amounts of stimuli (in a lab setting) does not necessarily predict the pleasantness and the food intake behaviour in realistic settings.

Further development of clinical diagnostic procedures, as well as new diagnostic techniques, requires ultrasound specific contrast agents as well as technological innovations. This paper reviews contrast agents developed in the last decade, which are all based on free gas or encapsulated gas bubbles.

Albunex is an ultrasound contrast agent used in echocardiography and in other areas, it consists of microspheres of which more than 95% have a diameter in the range 1-10 microns. The scattering properties of this agent as functions of ultrasound frequency and microsphere diameter and concentration are investigated. A model of the Albunex microspheres has been previously described, considering the individual microspheres as air bubbles surrounded by a thin elastic shell. In the present study this model is extended by including into it the internal friction in the shell when the microsphere vibrates. Acoustic scattering and transmission are measured in the frequency range from 700 kHz to 12.5 MHz. The measured transmitted power is used to estimate the two parameters in the theoretical model: the shell elasticity parameter, Sp and the shell friction, Sf. Introduction of the shell friction into the model improves the agreement between theory and measurements. For the scattered power, differences between measured and calculated values lie within 3 dB. It is concluded that for the frequencies 2.5 and 5 MHz, microspheres with a diameter between 5 and 12 microns are preferred as these deliver the most significant contribution to the total scattered power and cause relatively little attenuation.

Albunex is an ultrasound contrast agent for use in echocardiology and other areas. It is capable of passing the lung circulation after intravenous injection. A theoretical model is developed for some acoustic properties, particularly the scatter and absorption, of this contrast agent, considering the individual microspheres as air bubbles surrounded by a thin shell. The attenuation, the sum of absorption and scatter, of this contrast medium is measured with five transducers to cover the frequency range from 700 kHz to 8.5 MHz. It is concluded that the model correlates well with these acoustic measurements. When Albunex is used intravenously the backscatter enhancement in the left ventricle is caused mainly by the microspheres with diameters between 5 and 8 microns.

The behaviour of gas bubbles and gas encapsulated spheres as echographic contrast agents is reviewed. Compared with rigid spheres, gas bubbles are superior scattering agents and they offer a number of useful properties which can be exploited in a variety of ways. The analysis of their velocity of sound, back-scatter intensity, second harmonic emission and resonant frequency opens up new perspectives in the development of contrast agents for echocardiographic research with potential clinical applications.

The performance of transducers used for medical diagnosis depends to a great extent on matching layer, backing impedance and geometry of the active surface. In this paper special attention is given to the element vibrational modes, the optimum matching, the grating lobe and change of the real acoustic impedance into an imaginary impedance as a function of the product of the width and wavelength. Grating lobes on the echo image and the effect of a mismatch of the matching layer are illustrated. Suggestions are made for the design of linear and phased array transducers considering the above-mentioned aspects.

Transducer safety encompasses a wide spectrum of topics. It may range from mechanical construction reliability to biological effects created by ultrasound radiation. In this Paper the electrical and acoustical safety aspects are summarized and initial experience with sterilization of echocardiographic transducers for peroperative cardiac scanning is mentioned.
