Here, novel hydroxyl and carboxyl functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (AHF-MWCNT and ACF-MWCNT) were successfully synthesized and introduced for modification and antifouling improvement of the PVDF membrane. The blending effect of AHF-MWCNT and ACF-MWCNT on the morphology and surface properties of the PVDF membrane was explored by SEM, AFM, water contact angle, and zeta potential analysis. The results indicated that the membrane surface has become more hydrophilic, smoother as well more negative. In addition, the overall porosity and mean pore radius are increased by MWCNTs embedding. The filtration performance, antifouling and dye separation of the nanocomposite membranes were improved by adding any amounts of AHF-MWCNT and ACF-MWCNT in the PVDF membrane matrix. The carboxylic modification presented better performance than the hydroxyl functionalization. The 0.1 wt% ACF-MWCNT blended membrane presented an optimum performance with 46 L m -2 h -1 bar -1 permeability, 93% FRR, and 97.3% dye rejection. Consequently, embedding functionalized MWCNT in the PVDF membrane matrix was led to improvement of membrane characteristics and enhancement of pure water flux, antifouling feature, and dye separation. The accumulation of ammonia in water bodies can cause eutrophication and reduce water quality. Furthermore, 80% of the ammonia in the world is consumed as fertilizer, which makes it a resource that can be recovered under the circular economy concept. Then, ammonia from wastewater can be valorised for agricultural applications. Liquid-liquid membrane contactors (LLMCs) have been postulated as a novel and eco-friendly technology for ammonia recovery, because they can convert dissolved ammonia into ammonium salts by an acid stripping solution. The concentration of the ammonium salt produced is limited by the co-transport of water in LLMC. Further concentration by electrodialysis (ED) is presented as a solution to overcome this problem. In this work, ammonia streams with different initial ammonia concentrations (1.7-4.0 g/L) were treated by LLMCs to produce liquid ammonium salt fertilizers (as NH 4 NO 3 and NH 4 H 2 PO 4 ). Then, these ammonium solutions were concentrated by ED in order to achieve the nitrogen content required for direct application in agriculture for fertigation. After the LLMC process, the fertilizer obtained was composed of approximately 5.1% or 10.1% (w/w) nitrogen, depending on the initial ammonia concentration. After that, it was possible to concentrate these ammonium salts by a factor of 1.6 ± 0.3 using ED with an optimal energy consumption of 0.21 ± 0.08 kWh/kg ammonium salt and 93.1 ± 4.2% of faradaic yield. This gave a liquid fertilizer composed of 15.6% (w/w) nitrogen as NH 4 NO 3 . Contamination of surface waters by pesticides continues to be the focus of concern for water authorities due to the growing evidence of their deleterious effects on aquatic life. In this context, the present work investigates the occurrence of 16 selected pesticides belonging to the classes of triazines, phenylureas, organophosphates, chloroacetanilides and thiocarbamates in surface waters from the Llobregat River (NE Spain) and some of its tributaries (Anoia and Rubí) and assesses their potential impact on the aquatic organisms by applying a recently developed index, the Short-term Pesticide Risk Index for the Surface Water System (PRISW-1), which takes into account the pesticides concentrations and their overall toxicity against three aquatic organisms (algae, Daphnia, and fish). Chemical analysis, performed by means of a fully automated method based on isotope dilution on-line solid phase extraction-liquid chromatography-electrospray-tandem mass spectrometry (on-line SPE-LC-ESI-MS/MS), revealed diuron and diazinon as the most ubiquitous and abundant compounds with levels up to 818 and 132 ng L(-1), respectively. Total pesticide concentrations, which in only 1 out of 66 samples surpassed 500 ng L(-1), were higher in the tributaries than in the river but their contribution in terms of mass-loads to the overall pesticide pollution of the Llobregat River was relatively small. Contamination increased downstream of the river and was clearly influenced by rainfall and hence river flow. Application of the PRISW-1 index indicated that, although pesticides levels fulfilled the European Union Environmental Quality Standards (EQS) for surface waters, the existing pesticide contamination poses a low to high ecotoxicological risk for aquatic organisms, that algae and macro-invertebrates are at higher risk than fish, and that the organophosphates diazinon and malathion and the phenylurea diuron are the major contributors to the overall toxicity and therefore the most problematic compounds., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier Ltd.
