In response to the growing global concern over environmental pollution, the exploration of sustainable and eco-friendly materials derived from biomass waste has gained significant traction. This comprehensive review seeks to provide a holistic perspective on the utilization of biomass waste as a renewable carbon source, offering insights into the production of environmentally benign and cost-effective carbon-based materials. These materials, including biochar, carbon nanotubes, and graphene, have shown immense promise in the remediation of polluted soils, industrial wastewater, and contaminated groundwater. The review commences by elucidating the intricate processes involved in the synthesis and functionalization of biomass-derived carbon materials, emphasizing their scalability and economic viability. With their distinctive structural attributes, such as high surface areas, porous architectures, and tunable surface functionalities, these materials emerge as versatile tools in addressing environmental challenges. One of the central themes explored in this review is the pivotal role that carbon materials play in adsorption processes, which represent a green and sustainable technology for the removal of a diverse array of pollutants. These encompass noxious organic compounds, heavy metals, and organic matter, encompassing pollutants found in soils, groundwater, and industrial wastewater. The discussion extends to the underlying mechanisms governing adsorption, shedding light on the efficacy and selectivity of carbon-based materials in different environmental contexts. Furthermore, this review delves into multifaceted considerations, spanning the spectrum from biomass and biowaste resources to the properties and applications of carbon materials. Thermal desorption (TD) is generally considered to be an effective but unsustainable technology. Decontamination performance, charring behaviors and physicochemical properties during TD of dibenzofuran-contaminated soil (DCS) are explored. After treatment at 300 °C for 20 min, the dibenzofuran concentration decreases from 3969.37 mg/kg to 17.29 mg/kg, lower than Chinese risk screening value. More than 99% of dibenzofuran in soil are removed at low temperature of 300 °C, meanwhile the organic carbon is partially retained in soil. Removal mechanism of DCS at 300 °C is proposed, including desorption, cracking, and charring. Char material of low H:C ratio is produced by the generation, polymerization and dehydrogenation of aromatic intermediates, and then increases carbon stocks and reduces the carbon footprint of contaminated soil. Meanwhile, due to the char generated, pH, cation exchange capacity and specific surface area of DCS heated at 300 °C are higher than those of raw DCS, promoting ecological restoration and enhancing carbon sink in soil ecosystems. The aforesaid saving energy, reducing carbon footprint and enhancing carbon sink are exactly the main innovative technologies for achieving carbon neutrality. Hydrophobic organic pollutants (HOCs) in the complex groundwater and soil pose serious technical challenges for sustainable remediation. Herein, an asymmetric membrane (PCAM), inspired by the plant cuticle, was comprised of a top polydimethylsiloxane layer being selectively penetrable to HOCs from complex solution with humic acid, followed by transfer and catalyst layers with biochar pyrolyzed by 300 °C (BC300) and 700 °C (BC700). The PCAM triggered the advanced oxidation of the coming pollutant. The graphitized biochar layer of the PCAM acted as catalysts that induced HOC removal through a non-radical oxidation pathway. Compared to one type biochar membrane, the sequential multi-biochar composite membrane had a faster removal efficiency. The greater uptake and transport performance of multi-biochar composite membrane could be due to the larger pore size and distribution properties of PCAM physicochemical properties and oxidative degradation of peroxymonosulfate. This study explores the recovery of resources and energy from sewage sludge through the production of sludge-based activated carbon (SBAC) considering circular economy principles. The SBAC production costs were estimated under three scenarios considering various sludge dewatering/drying schemes to determine the production feasibility and its role in the circular economy. SBAC was tested in the removal of a mixture of nine commonly detected poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in environmentally relevant concentrations of ∽50 μg/L in comparison to commercially available activated carbon (AC) using 5 mg of sorbent and 5 mL of a nine-PFAS mixture in deionised water. SBAC can be produced at approximately 1.2 US $/kg, which is substantially lower than the average production cost of commercial AC of >3 US $/kg. A net revenue ranging from 2 to 7 US $/kg SBAC was estimated by recycling the produced non-condensable gases and bio-oil to produce energy and selling the SBAC. Batch adsorption tests showed that the PFASs removal of SBAC was superior to that of granular AC and similar to that of powdered AC, reaching >91% to below the detection limit. The kinetics tests revealed that adsorption by SBAC and AC occurred within 15 min. The overall results demonstrate the potential of SBAC as an effective sorbent for PFASs, achieving waste-to-resources circular economy via resource and energy recovery from sewage sludge, eliminating sludge disposal and contaminant-leaching to the environment, and in enhancing the quality of wastewater effluent before discharge., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Ltd. In washing soils contaminated with toxic metals, the replacement of recalcitrant EDTA with biodegradable chelators has gained high expectations. Herein we investigated the feasibility of using EDTA and biodegradable GLDA, EDDS and IDS under conditions pertinent to operational remediation technology, in a pilot-scale experiment. GLDA and IDS did not precipitate from process solutions, which lessened their recyclability. In other process parameters, chelator supplement, Na-saturation of process solutions and processing time, EDTA outperformed biodegradable chelators. Treatment with EDTA was also the most effective in total Pb and Zn removal and least impacted soil properties. GLDA was slightly better in Cd removal. EDDS and IDS were inefficient. All chelators effectively removed easily-available Pb, Zn and Cd from the exchangeable soil fraction. EDTA was the most efficient chelator in reducing the bioaccessibility of Pb and GLDA in reducing the bioaccessibility of Cd from simulated human gastrointestinal tract. Treatment with GLDA had an edge in reducing plant bioaccessibility of toxic metals, but induced worrying leachability of Pb. This was 8.3-times higher than with the process with EDTA and 3.4-times higher than in original soil. Thermal treatment can effectively remediate diesel-contaminated soil, but is considered unsustainable because of its energy-intensive nature and potential to damage soil properties. Here, we used low temperature thermal treatment (LTTT) as an energy-efficient technique to remediate diesel-contaminated soil. The impacts of LTTT on the physiochemical and ecological properties of soils were investigated to evaluate the reusability of heated soil. Heating at 250 °C for 10 min reduced the concentration of the total petroleum hydrocarbons from 6271 mg/kg to 359  mg/kg, which is lower than the Chinese risk screening level of 826 mg/kg. After LTTT, most soil physiochemical properties were nearly unchanged, and the NO 3 - -N and NH 4 + -N contents increased. Moreover, LTTT-remediated soil was favorable for the germination and early growth of wheat. The microbial community changed substantially, but recovered after being mixed with uncontaminated soil. Finally, exploration of the mechanisms of LTTT revealed that pyrolysis was the dominant mechanism of diesel removal. In recent years, the broader environmental impacts of remediation that arise from different remediation activities has drawn attention of practitioners, remediation design professionals and academicians to evaluate the net environmental benefit of environmental remediation projects. The main objective of this paper is to describe the Quantitative Assessment of Life Cycle Sustainability (QUALICS) framework, a new tool developed to strengthen decision-making in the selection of sustainable remedial technologies for the clean-up of contaminated sites. The proposed framework is a combination of two multi-criteria evaluation methods namely, the Integrated Value Model for Sustainable Assessment (MIVES) and Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). The QUALICS uses a multi-criteria assessment framework to support decision-making in remediation projects. A description of the methodology adopted for sustainability assessment of alternative remedial strategies using QUALICS framework is presented in this study. In addition, a case study is discussed to demonstrate the application of the QUALICS framework for the sustainability assessment of different remediation options for clean-up of a contaminated site. The case study involves sustainability assessment of different remediation options namely, electrokinetic remediation (EKR), excavation/disposal, and phytoremediation for remediation of a contaminated site. A sensitivity analysis was also performed for the EKR option by varying different parameters including electrode materials, energy source, electrolyte used, to analyze their influence on the sustainability of the alternative remedial options. The Green and Sustainable Remediation (GSR) movement demands informed, integrated, and holistic management of contaminated sites. As such, GSR may become increasingly relevant in developing countries such as China, where vast areas of contaminated land require clean-up. Among other efforts, the World Bank together with China's Foreign Economic Cooperation Office is facilitating GSR adoption through the development of a guideline on social-environmental management. However, there are no existing studies that have considered how the established remediation industry perceives its effectiveness in addressing the various social-environmental management aspects, or how certain aspects have rooted. Without this information, it may be difficult to guide social-environmental practice forward, or introduce GSR into developing remediation markets with any precision. Therefore, a questionnaire survey of remediation participators was undertaken with principal component analysis (PCA) applied to the data to help group the various aspects. The PCA extracted two components for environmental management, ascribed to: (1) on-site/local impacts; and, (2) widespread impacts, and three social management components, ascribed to: (1) community inclusion; (2) economic gain; and, (3) health, safety, and welfare. It was found that the aspects the industry are most familiar with historically are generally dealt with more effectively than those that have only recently been introduced by the GSR movement. In particular, bolstering the management of widespread environmental impacts and giving greater regard to the economic gain of remediation, may be beneficial. Multi-criteria analysis and detailed impact analysis were carried out to assess the sustainability of four remedial alternatives for metal-contaminated soil/sediment at former timber treatment sites and harbour sediment with different scales. The sustainability was evaluated in the aspects of human health and safety, environment, stakeholder concern, and land use, under four different scenarios with varying weighting factors. The Monte Carlo simulation was performed to reveal the likelihood of accomplishing sustainable remediation with different treatment options at different sites. The results showed that in-situ remedial technologies were more sustainable than ex-situ ones, where in-situ containment demonstrated both the most sustainable result and the highest probability to achieve sustainability amongst the four remedial alternatives in this study, reflecting the lesser extent of off-site and on-site impacts. Concerns associated with ex-situ options were adverse impacts tied to all four aspects and caused by excavation, extraction, and off-site disposal. The results of this study suggested the importance of considering the uncertainties resulting from the remedial options (i.e., stochastic analysis) in addition to the overall sustainability scores (i.e., deterministic analysis). The developed framework and model simulation could serve as an assessment for the sustainability likelihood of remedial options to ensure sustainable remediation of contaminated sites., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Ltd.
