In seasonally anestrous goat does, ovulations can be induced by combining a treatment regimen including progestagen, eCG and prostaglandins. Nonetheless, ovulations occur only once and then does return to a seasonally anestrous state. This study was performed to determine whether the presence of a sexually active buck can stimulate a second ovulation after induced luteolysis using prostaglandins following the first ovulation. Three groups of seasonally anestrous does were treated to induce ovulations using an intra-vaginally inserted sponge containing a progestin combined with eCG and prostaglandin administrations. Goats that had ovulations were treated with a prostaglandin 11 days after progestin sponge removal. After the prostaglandin injection, does continued to be isolated from bucks (n = 8), were penned with a control buck (n = 9), or were penned with a sexually active buck (n = 10). The proportion of goats having ovulations after imposing the ovulation-induction protocol was greater than 80% and did not differ among treatment groups (P >  0.05). The proportion of does having ovulations after injecting prostaglandins was greater when does were penned with a sexually active buck (8/10) than does penned with a control buck (0/9) or that were isolated from bucks (0/8; P < 0.05). It is concluded that in seasonally anestrous goat does induced to have ovulations using a hormonal treatment regimen, the presence of a sexually active buck can induce a second ovulation when there is an induced luteolysis., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier B.V. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the stage of seasonal anestrus and breed on ovarian response in non-estrous cycling goats using a progesterone (P4) injection plus human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG)-based protocol. In Experiment 1, non-estrous cycling local Mexican goats were treated with 20 mg of P4 plus 100 IU of hCG injections 24 h apart during April (early anestrus, n = 13) or June (late anestrus, n = 12). The estrous response, interval from hCG-to-estrus, and interval to ovulation were not affected by season (P > 0.05). In addition, the size of the follicle from which ovulation occurred and the size of the corpus luteum were not different between the two stages of seasonal anestrus (P > 0.05). In Experiment 2, the estrous response was compared between multiparous non-estrous cycling local Mexican (n = 18) and Alpine (n = 19) goats in which stage of the estrous cycle was synchronized using the same P4+hCG protocol as in Experiment 1. Neither the onset of estrus nor the time of ovulation differed between breeds, and the estrus-to-ovulation interval also was similar for both breeds (P > 0.05). The diameter of the dominant follicle at the time of ovulation was similar between local and Alpine goats (P > 0.05). In addition, the pregnancy rate was not different for both local and Alpine goats (P > 0.05). In conclusion, results of this study indicate that the stage of seasonal anestrus or breed do not modify estrous and ovarian response in non-estrous cyclic goats synchronized with a P4 injection plus hCG-based protocol., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier B.V. The aim of this study was to examine whether photoperiod-treated bucks have the same capacity as melatonin-treated bucks to induce reproductive responses in female goats during the spring. On 10 April, 38 anoestrous does were placed with: 1) photoperiod-treated bucks (additional light hours for 83 days from the end of the previous November; PHOTO; n = 12); 2) bucks treated with exogenous melatonin at the beginning of March (MEL; n = 13); and 3) bucks that received no treatments (CONTROL; n = 13). The bucks' sexual behaviour was assessed for 10 days, and doe oestrous behaviour was recorded for the next 32 days by checking for harness marks. Ovulation was confirmed from plasma progesterone concentration (measured twice per week) and ovulation rate was assessed by transrectal ultrasonography. Fecundity, fertility, prolificacy and productivity were also determined. The percentage of does in the PHOTO, MEL and CONTROL group: 1) having ovulations was 92%, 100% and 38% respectively; 2) expressing behavioural oestrous associated with ovulation was 92%, 100% and 31%; and 3) that became pregnant was 75%, 69% and 23%, respectively. The kids produced per doe were 1.08 ± 0.23, 1.15 ± 0.25 and 0.31 ± 0.17 for the PHOTO, MEL, and CONTROL groups, respectively with there being no differences between the PHOTO and MEL groups, however, there was a difference (P < 0.05) between PHOTO/MEL and CONTROL groups. Thus, imposing a stimulatory lighting regimen during the preceding winter period is as efficient as using subcutaneous melatonin implants in stimulating reproductive behaviours and physiological functions of bucks., (Copyright © 2019 The Authors. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of sexually activated (by specific photoperiodic treatments) vasectomized rams on the onset of puberty in autumn-born ewe lambs in spring. Photoperiodic-treated rams were assigned to one of three groups, which were sequentially exposed to two months of long days (16h light/d) and given three melatonin implants at the end of the long days (sexually-activated-rams; SAR): SAR1 (n=5; 1 December-31 January), SAR2 (n=5; 1 Jan-28 February), and SAR3 (n=5; 1 February-31 March). Control rams (CR; n=4) were exposed to the natural photoperiod. On 1 March, 50 ewe lambs born in September were assigned to the SAR rams (SAR-treated; n=25) or the CR rams (CR-treated; n=25). SAR-treated ewe lambs were housed with SAR1 rams from 1 March. SAR2 rams replaced SAR1 rams (14 April), which were replaced by SAR3 rams (22 May) until 30 June. CR-treated ewe lambs were housed with the unstimulated rams. Ovulation was identified by weekly plasma progesterone concentrations and estrous behavior, as indicated by colored rumps. A greater proportion of SAR than CR ewe lambs ovulated in April (52% vs. 0%) and May (68% vs. 0%) (P<0.0001), and were in estrus in May (64% vs. 0%) and June (92% vs. 24%) (P<0.0001). The presence of SAR rams reduced (P<0.0001) mean (±SD) age (d) at first ovulation and estrus (235±28 [7 May] and 257±24 [29 May], respectively), compared to that of CR-treated ewe lambs (277±5 [18 June] and 302±16 [14 July], respectively). In conclusion, the presence of photoperiod-melatonin-induced, sexually activated rams in spring, advanced puberty in autumn-born ewe lambs. Using this technique might provide an effective and sustainable means of increasing the productive life of ewes, while avoiding the use of hormonal treatments., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier B.V. Different neurotransmitter and neuromodulatory systems regulate synthesis and secretion of GnRH. Whereas the endocrine and neural systems are activated in response to the metabolic status and the circulating levels of specific blood metabolites, glutamate receptors have been reported at hepatic level. This study evaluated the possible effect of glutamate supplementation upon changes in serum concentrations across time for total protein (TP), urea (UR) and cholesterol (CL) around the onset of puberty in goats. Prepuberal female goats (n=18) were randomly assigned to: (1) excitatory amino acids group, GLUT, n=10; 16.52±1.04kg live weight (LW), 3.4±0.12 body condition score (BCS) receiving an i.v. infusion of 7mgkg(-1) LW of l-glutamate, and (2) Control group, CONT, n=8; 16.1±1.04kg LW, 3.1±0.12 BCS. General averages for LW (23.2±0.72kg), BCS (3.37±0.10 units), serum TP (65.28±2.46mgdL(-1)), UR (23.42±0.95mgdL(-1)), CL (77.89±1.10mgdL(-1)) as well as the serum levels for TP and UR across time did not differ (P>0.05) between treatments. However, while GLUT positively affected (P<0.05) both the onset (207±9 vs. 225±12 d) and the percentage (70 vs. 25%) of females showing puberty, a treatment×time interaction effect (P<0.05) was observed in the GLUT group, with increases in serum cholesterol, coincident with the onset of puberty. Therefore, in peripuberal glutamate supplemented goats, serum cholesterol profile could act as a metabolic modulator for the establishment of puberty, denoting also a potential role of glutamate as modulator of lipid metabolism., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier B.V. The objective of this study was to determine whether reproductive seasonality of local well-fed female goats from subtropical Mexico (26 degrees N) can be controlled by photoperiod. The control group (n=12) remained in an open pen under natural photoperiod variations. The two experimental groups (n=8 each) were placed in light-proof rooms and exposed for 2 yr to alternations of 3 months of long days and 3 months of short days. One group was first exposed to long days, Group 1, and the other one to short days, Group 2. Blood samples were obtained twice a week to determine ovulation status by progesterone plasma concentrations. Goats from the control group displayed a seasonality of ovulations. The mean (+/-SEM) dates of the onset and end of the ovulations were September 10+/-5 d and February 16+/-4 d, respectively. In contrast, in both experimental groups, ovulations were modified (P<0.05) by the photoperiodic treatments such that ovulations started and ended during short and long days, respectively. In Groups 1 and 2, ovulations started 67+/-2 and 66+/-2 d (P>0.05), respectively, after the transfer from long to short days. In contrast, the timing of the cessation of ovulations after the transfer from short to long days differed (P<0.05) between groups (19+/-3 and 31+/-3 d for Groups 1 and 2, respectively). Local female goats from subtropical Mexico are, therefore, sensitive to photoperiodic changes that they are exposed to at this latitude and this environmental cue may control the timing of the breeding season in natural conditions., (Copyright 2010 Elsevier B.V. To determine the effect of body condition on the characteristics of the breeding season in female goats from subtropical Mexico, does in either greater- or lesser-body condition (n=20/group) were monitored for the expression of estrous behavior, ovulation and ovulation rate between June and April. The commencement of estrus and ovulation occurred earlier (P<0.05) in does in greater than lesser body condition. The cessation of estrus and ovulation was later (P<0.05) in female goats with greater than those with lesser body condition. Does in greater body condition had more (P<0.001) normal estrous cycles than those in lesser body condition. As consequence, does from the greater body condition group had fewer short (P<0.001) or long (P<0.05) estrous cycles than those of in the lesser body condition group. The ovulation rate was greater (P<0.01) in the greater (1.9+/-0.1) than lesser body condition does (1.6+/-0.1). In conclusion, female goats in lesser body condition have a shorter breeding season, more abnormal estrous cycles, and fewer ovulations than does in greater body condition.

The objective of the present study was to determine whether parity is a factor that influences the estrous and ovulatory responses of female goats when they are stimulated by males that show increased sexual activity. To stimulate sexual activity, four adult male goats were subjected to photoperiodic treatment for 2.5 months comprising long days, with the treatment commencing on 1 November. On 14 April at 1,900 h, a group of multiparous females (n=21) and a group of 16 months-old nulliparous females (n=19) were exposed to four bucks (two per group) for 15 days. Throughout the study period, the estrous behavior of these female goats was detected twice on a daily basis. Ovulations of the female goats were determined by ecography on days 7 and 18 after exposure to males. The sexual behavior of males was recorded twice every day from 0800 to 0900 h and from 1730 to 1,830 h during the first 4 days after introduction in the pen of females. The total cumulative proportion of multiparous females that had ovulations (100%) and displayed estrous behavior (100%) during the 15 days of exposure to males did not differ (P>0.05) from that of nulliparous females (100% and 95%, respectively). The interval between introduction of males and onset of estrous behavior did not differ (P>0.05) between multiparous (1.9+/-0.1 days) and nulliparous (1.7+/-0.2 days) females. The proportion of females displaying a short estrous cycle was greater (P<0.05) in multiparous (13/21, 62%) than in nulliparous (5/19, 26%) females. Duration of these shorter than typical estrous cycles did not differ (P>0.05) between groups (multiparous: 5.2+/-0.3 days, nulliparous: 4.5+/-0.1 days). The number of anogenital sniffings was greater (P<0.001) in males exposed to nulliparous than in those exposed to multiparous females. In contrast, the number of mounting attempts was greater (P<0.01) in males that were introduced to multiparous than in those that were introduced to nulliparous does. The number of flehmen, nudging, self-marking with urine, and mounts was not different (P>0.05) between males that were in contact with multiparous and nulliparous females. These results indicate that regardless of parity, female goats respond to male introduction if they are stimulated by males that were previously exposed to artificial long days to increase their sexual behavior.

This experiment was conducted to determine if feed supplementation before exposure of anoestrous does to males increases ovulation rate. Does (n=50) grazing natural vegetation were divided into two groups (n=25). One group received no feed supplementation, while the other was supplemented daily, with a mixture of 950 g of alfalfa hay, 290 g of rolled corn and 140 g of soy bean per animal for 7 days before exposure to bucks. On April 7, all females were exposed to four adult sexually active bucks (two per group) for 15 days. The ovulation rate at the ovulation detected within 5 days of exposure to males, assessed by transrectal ultrasonography, was greater (P<0.05) in supplemented (1.6+/-0.2) than in non-supplemented females (1.0+/-0.2). In contrast, ovulation rate at the subsequent ovulation, detected between days 6 and 15 of contact with males, was not different (P>0.05) between supplemented (1.3+/-0.1) and non-supplemented females (1.3+/-0.2). Feed supplementation 7 days before exposure to sexually active bucks of females managed under grazing conditions increased their ovulation rate at the first male-induced ovulation but the stimulatory effect of supplementation did not persist and was not observed at the subsequent ovulation.
