Purpose: The purpose of the study is to investigate and reveal this relationship of various engineering demand parameters (EDPs) of this structural type and intensity measures (IMs) under intra-plate earthquakes. Design/methodology/approach: The nonlinear finite element model used was calibrated first to the existing results of the shaking table test to verify the modeling technique. Findings: This paper investigated the relationship between intensity measures and various engineering demand parameters of cable-stayed bridges using intra-plate earthquakes. The correlation analysis and Pearson coefficient are used to study the correlation between EDPs and IMs. The results showed that peak ground velocity (PGV)/peak ground acceleration, peak ground displacement and root-mean-square of displacement showed weak correlation with IMs. PGV, sustained maximum velocity, a peak value of spectral velocity, A95 parameter, Housner intensity and spectral acceleration at the fundamental period, the spectral velocity at the fundamental period and spectral displacement at the fundamental period were determined to be better predictors for various EDPs. Originality/value: This paper investigated the correlation between the intensity measures of intra-plate earthquakes with the seismic responses of a typical long-span cable-stayed bridge in China. The nonlinear finite element model used was calibrated to the existing results of the shaking table test to verify the modeling technique. In total, 104 selected ground motions were applied to the calibrated model, and the responses of various components of the bridge were obtained. This study proposed PGV as the optimal IM. Purpose – External assistance is often urgently required when an area is struck by a catastrophe. Central government-oriented aid (CGA), national non-governmental organizations aid (NNA), and international humanitarian aid (IHA) are three typical aid models, and national counterpart aid (NCA) is an innovative model for post-Wenchuan earthquake recovery and reconstruction (PWERR). The purpose of this paper is to make a comparative study of the aid models in order to develop recommendations on external assistance for better post-disaster recovery and reconstruction (PDRR). Design/methodology/approach – This study was performed in three steps: a case study on the NCA model during the PWERR; a documentary research on the CGA, NNA and IHA models; and a comparative analysis of the four models. Findings – The results of the comparative study show that the NCA model is more efficient and effective than the other three typical aid models. However it must be based on the premise of a centralized government. Practical implications – The NCA model contributes to disaster management in a developing country context. It develops a viable model for developing countries in coping with the catastrophe, can enhance their ability for domestic self-assistance, and has reference to the construction of national integrated disaster management systems. Originality/value – This paper empirically researches the innovative NCA model, and compares it with commonly used aid models for the PDRR. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of media attention on corporate disaster relief.Design/methodology/approach The authors used a matched sample research design, which is considered more appropriate than a random sample design for studying events that have low-occurrence rates in general. For each donor firm in the Yushu earthquake, the authors matched the firm with a non-donor firm in the same industry and with a firm size of within ±30 percent of the total assets in the year prior to the year of the occurrence of the Yushu earthquake. Then, using the Baidu engine, which is the most popular Chinese search engine, the authors captured the online media attention to the donor firms and their disaster relief.Findings The authors found that media attention drove corporate disaster relief.Research limitations/implications Although the authors highlighted the role of the media as an important stakeholder in influencing corporate disaster relief, the authors did not fully explore the media’s influence. Future research should delve more deeply into the impact of the tenor of media coverage on corporate disaster relief.Originality/value This study reveals that the media, a particularly powerful stakeholder, can be a corporate disaster relief driver in China. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to understand the root cause of a large number of quality problems in the current Chinese construction market. Design/methodology/approach – Information economics theory is used to analyze the cause of construction quality problems related to the specific case of the Wenchuan earthquake of China. Findings – The single low price competition in the construction tender market leads to the serious adverse selection and moral hazard behavior of bidding firms. The main solution to this problem is the introduction and improvement of an independent inspection/supervision mechanism. Originality/value – The paper systematically analyzes the evaluation method of the lowest price winning bidding policy, which is the fundamental cause of adverse selection and moral hazard problems in the Chinese construction market.
