Purpose: This study aims to understand investors' reactions to news on fraud and pecuniary and regulatory action in privately owned and government-owned banks. Design/methodology/approach: To examine the role of ownership holdings, this study deploys event study methodology and cross-sectional regression to analyze the abnormal returns and the intergroup dynamics. Event study methodology studies the abnormal return on stock prices on days when fraud, pecuniary actions and regulatory news were reported for 36 banks that are listed on the NSE. Data on news has been collected from Reuters for 110 months. Cross-sectional regression analyses are done to examine whether selected variables on bank characteristics influence the abnormal returns. Exploring the intergroup dynamics between government and privately owned banks helps to accentuate how stakeholders influence investor responses. Findings: Private and government-owned banks display an anomalous return pattern during the events, though to varying degrees and for a longer duration. The sharp downturn observed in private banks in response to pecuniary and regulatory actions related to news can be attributed to the associated risk of these banks. Intergroup dynamics further demonstrate that the effect of such news regarding government-owned bank stocks is more pronounced on privately owned banks compared to the effect of news related to privately owned banks on public banks. Originality/value: The study shows how ownership structure variedly impacts investors' response to news related to fraud, and pecuniary and regulatory actions on Indian banks, which may eventually ask for customized investment approaches for government-owned and privately owned banks. Purpose: We study how capital requirements, intended as a measure to ensure security for the financial system, can create moral hazard for banks in dealing with distressed debts. Design/methodology/approach: Over the period spanning from 1993 to 2019, we manually gathered data on 1953 firms, identifying a total of 2,146 distress events, with 804 instances resulting in bankruptcy fillings. Findings: Our analyses at the loan level and the bank level consistently show that loans of distressed firms are much more likely to be extended when the lenders are closer to the capital requirement limit. Exploiting the discontinuity in the predetermined maturity date of loans, we provide causal evidence on the relationship between capital ratios and extension likelihood. Distressed loans that are due just before the report date (end of a quarter) are much more likely to be extended than loans due just after the report date, after controlling for loan and firm characteristics. Additional analyses show that the effects are stronger when external financing is more costly and when the banks are poorly capitalized. Originality/value: Our paper presents the first causal evidence of capital requirements on lending distortion, contributing to our understanding of the dynamics within the banking sector and providing policy implications for promoting financial stability and regulatory efficacy. Purpose: This qualitative study aims to examine bankers' perspectives regarding financial inclusion, the challenges it faces and the scope for improvement. This research proposes a financial inclusion model, considering the inputs received by bankers. Financial exclusion of different sections is an issue common to emerging countries. Design/methodology/approach: Data for qualitative research were collected through interviews with bank officials. The information was gathered from 32 bankers from India's several zones (North, South, West and East). The data were collected from bankers from different public and private sector banks. Thematic analysis was performed up to the point of saturation to study the response received from bankers. Findings: Bank-related issues such as frequent computer problems, network connectivity problems, costs, a shortage of bank branches, fewer transactions through automated teller machines and a shortage of banking staff affect customers' confidence in formal banking. Banking services are disrupted by a lack of trust in banking correspondents (BCs), as they are not regular employees of banks. Limits on daily transactions discourage high-value customers from using BCs and kiosks. The time spent on administrative formalities impacts customers. Financial inclusion is affected by availability, accessibility, usage and affordability. Digital financial literacy is essential for ease of transaction, but awareness about financial products helps protect customers from cyber scams. The findings of this research would benefit financial institutions globally in developing their businesses and helping to achieve financial inclusion and the United Nation's sustainable development goals (SDGs). Originality/value: This research paper undertakes a qualitative analysis of the views collected from bankers. Bankers are crucial stakeholders in the successful implementation of the National Financial Inclusion Policy of the Government of India. Purpose: This study aims to investigate sustainability practices in the banking industry, focusing on a developing economy. It uses the triple-bottom-line framework to answer the following research question: how do banks in Nigeria conceptualise sustainability, and what role does it play in their banking practices? Design/methodology/approach: This study adopts a social constructivist approach in its exploration of banking sustainability practices in an emerging economy, and the research design is a purpose-based (exploratory) approach. The qualitative data was collected from 33 bank personnel from various bank units and departments through semi-structured interviews to achieve the research objective. Findings: The study reveals a lack of sustainability policies and programmes, as banks focus mainly on profitability. It uncovers unfair treatments of bank workers through casualisation, low wages and work overload. It indicates that most banks in developing countries ignore environmental considerations, as they still carry out paper-based transactions and use diesel-powered generators, which cause various negative environmental impacts. It also confirms that governments and banks in the country are not doing enough to propagate sustainable practices and banks have also not taken advantage of the sustainability concept to promote their brands; instead, they consider it as requiring additional operational costs. Practical implications: The findings demonstrate the need for banks to see sustainability from a marketing point of view and adopt sustainable practices to create additional value that will improve their brand image and enhance their competitiveness. Originality/value: The importance of sustainability in the banking industry in emerging economies is considered a viable means of contributing to the overall development goals of the United Nations as the world tries to preserve the environment. Purpose: This paper aims to examine the relationship between board structure and risk-taking, exploring how this association is influenced by advanced technologies in the banking sector. Design/methodology/approach: This study uses a panel sample of 22 Pakistani banks from 2011 to 2018. To test the authors' hypothesis, the authors use regression analysis with two-way cluster robust standard errors. Further, the authors also check the robustness of the authors' findings using alternate proxies of board structure and bank risk-taking behavior. To address endogeneity concerns, the authors use the two-stage least square technique. Findings: In the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, Pakistani banks' digitalization is modeled by the presence of Temenos-T24/Oracle as their core banking system (software providing end-to-end operational integration). Its interactional effect with corporate governance is evaluated to implicate informed risk-taking by the board as a result of improved information access and analysis. The authors find that board size has a positive association with risk-taking, and the use of modern technology reshapes this association in the banking sector. Originality/value: The contribution of this paper is twofold. First, the impact of board structure on bank risk-taking has not been extensively researched in Pakistan – a highly volatile and unpredictable economy. Purpose: This paper aims to examine the history of data leaks and investigative journalism, the techniques and technology that enable them and their influence in Australia and abroad. It explores the ethical and professional considerations of investigative journalists, how they approach privacy and information-sharing and how this differs from intelligence practice in government and industry. The paper assesses the strengths and limitations of Collaborative Investigative Reporting based on Information Leaks (CIRIL) as a kind of public-facing intelligence practice. Design/methodology/approach: This study draws on academic literature, source material from investigations by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists and the Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project, and a survey of financial crime compliance professionals conducted in 2022. Findings: The paper identifies three key causal factors that have enabled the rise of CIRIL even as traditional journalism has declined: the digital storage of information; increasing public interest in offshore finance and tax evasion; and "virtual newsrooms" enabled by internet communications. It concludes that the primary strength of CIRIL is its creation of complex global narratives to inform the public about corruption and tax evasion, while its key weakness is that the scale and breadth of the data released makes it difficult to focus on likely criminal activity. Results of a survey of industry and government professionals indicate that CIRIL is generally more effective as public information than as an investigative resource, owing to the volume, age and quality of information released. However, the trends enabling CIRIL are likely to continue, and this means that governments and financial institutions need to become more effective at using leaked information. Originality/value: Over the past decade, large-scale, data-driven investigative journalism projects such as the Pandora Papers and the Russian Laundromat have had a significant public impact by exposing money laundering, financial crime and corruption. These projects share certain hallmarks: the use of human intelligence, often sourced from anonymous leaks; inventive fusion of this intelligence with data from open sources; and collaboration among a global collective of investigative journalists to build a narrative. These projects prioritise informing the public. They are also an important information source for government and private sector organisations working to investigate and disrupt financial crime.
