Abstract

The article ponders the changing significance of gender for educational inequality in sub-Saharan Africa. Among the variants of the paradigmatic debate on the issue are meritocracy versus social production in education and modernization versus dependency in economic development. One of the pre-conditions for policy reform in education is reversibility. Research shows that sex-related schooling inequality is smaller than socio-economic (SES)-related inequality. Misrecognition is cited as one irreducible impediment to educational parity.
