Purpose – Underpricing is one of the most important anomalies associated with initial public offerings (IPOs). The purpose of this paper is twofold; first, it examines the impact of underwriter’s market share and spread on the underpricing of IPOs; and second, it investigates the effect of management earnings forecasts bias and accuracy on the underpricing of IPOs. Design/methodology/approach – A sample of 190 Malaysian IPOs listing on the main market of Bursa Malaysia from January 1, 2002 to February 29, 2012 was used and collected data were analyzed through univariate analysis and pooled ordinary least squares regression. Findings – The empirical evidence shows that IPOs underwritten by underwriters as having high market share and charging low underwriting spread experience higher level of underpricing. The paper also finds that IPOs issued more biased earnings forecasts are related with severe underpricing. Finally, this paper reveals that the more accurate the earnings forecasts are, the more minimized will be the asymmetric information and hence, the less will be IPO underpricing. Practical implications – The paper has some implications for policy makers, investors and underwriters. First, this study offers some insights for policy makers who are responsible for Malaysian financial markets current reforms. Further, knowing the importance of the economic outcomes of the earnings forecasts on underpricing for policy makers, they may adopt the findings in their discussion of costs of litigation and potential modifications in the requirements of issuing earnings forecasts. For the investors, findings may improve their understanding of equity valuation and for the underwriters, it would assist them in identifying underwriting cost. Originality/value – This paper is considered the first study to extend IPO literature by investigating the relationships between underwriter’s market share, underwriter’s spread, earnings forecasts bias, earnings forecasts accuracy and IPO underpricing in an emerging country, such as Malaysia. Purpose – A variety of papers have analyzed the underpricing of REIT IPOs or property company IPOs. The purpose of this paper is to compare the two sectors and examines differences in the underpricing of the two types of IPOs. Design/methodology/approach – An OLS regression is used to identify factors influencing the underpricing of A-REIT and property company IPOs from 1994 until 2014. Findings – This study finds that A-REIT IPOs have a significantly lower underpricing on average than Australian property company IPOs. The time taken to list appears to influence the underpricing of both A-REIT IPOs and property company IPOs, in that issues that are filled more quickly have higher underpricing but with the magnitude of the impact being less for A-REITs. The sentiment toward the stock market also appears to impact on the underpricing of A-REIT and property company IPOs again with the magnitude of the impact being less for A-REITs. Practical implications – The paper provides information to new A-REIT and property company issuers, underwriters and investors. Originality/value – The study is the first to compare and examine the differences in the underpricing of both REITs and property companies in the one country over the same time period. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to relate the fees paid to IPO underwriters to the nature and quality of the services they provide. Design/methodology/approach – Controlling for the characteristics of the firm going public, the risk associated with the offering, and the reputation of the underwriter, the authors study on a sample of Italian IPOs whether a formal commitment by underwriters to provide ancillary services allows them to charge higher fees. Findings – The authors document that asking underwriters to stabilize stock price is costly to the issuer, while to support liquidity is not. The authors’ also show that underwriters stabilize IPOs that really need it, whereas the provision of liquidity support does not seem to be always aligned with the issuer’s interest. Originality/value – Investigating the Italian underwriting market is instructive for two main reasons. First, the institutional setting in IPOs is similar to most continental European countries, but significantly different from the US market. For instance, allocation policies in US IPOs are discretionary for both retail and institutional investors, while in Europe shares cannot be discretionarily allocated to retail investors. Second, the Italian market offers the opportunity to study the going-public decision outside the typical Anglo-Saxon financial systems. This is of interest because while both the UK and the USA have well-developed equity markets and a related industry of financial intermediation centered on providing equity, our analysis sheds light on financial intermediation of IPOs in a bank-centered system. Purpose – Prior research on underwriter reputation treats underwriters as the unit of analyzing, while the purpose of this paper is to analyze underwriter reputation effects after introducing discretion of underwriters’ employees. Specially, this paper investigates the damage on underwriter reputation effects when underwriters’ employees tolerate issuers’ earnings management for their self-interest. Design/methodology/approach – In 2004, a Chinese security regulation introduced two professional employees from the lead underwriter, known as sponsors, to work as individual financial intermediaries. This paper tests whether the ability of reputable underwriters in restraining issuers from manipulating earnings decreases after the 2004 regulation, given that the regulation encourages sponsors to exchange for their private benefits by ignoring issuers’ earnings management. Findings – The inverse relation between underwriter reputation and issuers’ earnings management is weakened after the 2004 regulation, especially when underwriters do not employ enough sponsors. Sponsors who have tolerated issuers’ earnings management will win more business in the following years. The influence of underwriter reputation on issuers’ underpricing and post-initial public offering performance is also less significant after the regulation. Originality/value – This work extends literatures on underwriter reputation from a completely different aspect that emphasizes the self-interest of underwriters’ employees. Purpose -- The purpose of this paper is to, using a large sample of NASDAQ initial public offerings (IPOs), examine the evolution of integer price clustering of IPOs in the aftermarket trading. Design/methodology/approach -- Consistent with Harris's (1991) costly negotiation hypothesis, clustering on integer prices is a positive function of price level and various stock valuation uncertainty proxies, and it is a negative function of trading activities for IPOs and seasoned stocks. Findings -- It was found that, after controlling for price level, daily return volatility, number of trades, trading volume, number of market makers and the effect of price support, the integer price frequency of IPOs converge to that of seasoned stocks immediately, and whether IPOs have integer offer prices does not affect their integer price clustering in the aftermarket trading after the effect of price support is controlled for. Originality/value -- These results suggest that the IPO pricing process significantly reduce the differences between integer priced IPOs and non-integer priced IPOs in pre-offering valuation uncertainty.
