This paper presents the history of infection control both in Poland and around the world, as well as the history of infection monitoring in Poland. The following have been discussed: the most important recent publications, which were based on analysis of data gathered in Poland; information on infection monitoring programs functioning in certain countries; and the core principles on which contemporary national and regional infection monitoring programs implemented in hospitals should be built on.
