Georg Elliott Olden, born on Nov 13, 1920, was the first black member of the New York Art Directors Club. He was a good cartoonist who portrayed any situation in a humorous way. He worked as art director for CBS and won seven Clio awards. He was the first designer of news graphics for CBS. He was shot dead on Jan 25, 1975.

Reader responses to the design of annual reports varied, with some involving specific calls for eliminating credits for the design firm, abolishing colored paper for financial paper, modifying the Chairman message to shareholders and criticizing lengthy tables of contents. This was evident from a study of the responses of people such as shareholders, company clients and investment consultants who read such reports.

Minnesota, Illinois, Ohio, Missouri, Indiana, Wisconsin and Michigan, constituting the Midwest, have been witnessing unfavorable conditions in designer business such as alliances or consolidation among agencies, inducing the concept of integrated marketing which complements the emergence of designer freelances, who pose a problem to the stability of the designer firms. Graphic designers have taken on designing retail indoors, and designers firms have entered into partnership with video agencies, emphasizing a definite shift from the traditional standards of graphic designing. The slow recovery of the Midwest from the economic recession has also affected the designer business.

Modern Dog, an unconventional design studio, was founded by Robynne Raye and Michael Strassburger in 1987. One of their first clients was K2 for whom they continue to design snowboard logos. They have also done a number of posters for Seattle Repertory theatre. In 1989, Chris Baldwin left the studio, and in 1991 Vittorio Costarella joined the studio.

Pat Hansen, the founder of Hansen Design Company, has done work for a number of clients in Seattle, including The Well Made Bed, the Seattle Public Library, and the Seattle-Tacoma international airport. Hansen's designs are influenced by Swiss style, but she adds her own sense of playfulness to her work as well. Hansen graduated from the design program at the University of Washington in 1977.

Galie Jean-Louis and Susan Berry designed a music feature page called 'Impulse' for Anchorage Daily News. It was made of brilliant images and scintillating colors and became popular instantly. This section of music and culture was to attract the attention of the youth to make them read the paper. The newspaper deviated from its traditional orthodoxy to accommodate 'Impulse,' which is like a music magazine or a video graphic. Daily News has become famous for introducing such poster pages everyday.

The typical characteristics of the 1991 annual reports of more than 200 companies were summed up in seven adjectives: muted, glossy, luscious, humble, funky, spunky and uncoated. That the presentation of annual reports of most companies were very uninspiring was mostly due to the recession which put most of the companies on the losing side such that the annual report designers had to promote their clients with less funds than were usually provided.

Print magazine's 29th International Student Cover Design Competition once again showcased the products of the creative juices of budding graphic designers. The originality of the entry created by Gary French of the University of New York at Purchase, which won the second place, nearly made it merit being adjudged as the best cover design. French's entry is not a parody of a popular work of art like the other winners but a design which is a direct result of his creative imagination.

Josef Sumichrast was born in 1948, raised in Indiana, schooled in the American Academy of Art in Chicago and has enjoyed a successful career as an illustrator for the past 25 years. He has worked for America's top companies and department stores and has designed children's books, board games and clothing. He, however, is best known for designing pictorial alphabets, an art form that dates back to the origins of writing.

Stan Gaz uses film transparencies processed as negatives to create his three-dimensional surrealist photographs. His work are collages that make use of multiple exposures, organic imagery and recurring symbols. His main objective is to see the artistic interplay of light and color on objects on film. Meanwhile, Illustrator Harry Bliss uses watercolor as a medium. His works reflect both his creativity and the medium's adaptability through the interplay of figures, shadows and colors. His career and artistic influences are discussed.

The 1990 graphic design on annual reports is more imaginative, and very much a product of computer ingenuity. Designers have taken to utilizing uncommon color synthesis. Combinations of olive-gray, plum and fluorescent pink; lilac and pumpkin; hot pink and violet are examples of the rare color blends seen. Emphasis is also noted on line curvature, shapes, free-verse-style typography and borders. Computer technology had a more telling effect on the visual aspects of corporation reports than environmentalism and economics. Design-conscious firms were responsible for the improved quality of books.

The task of drawing people of different color and cultures can be a difficult one for illustrators. This is because a complex visual experience such as ethnic diversity must be depicted through a medium that can be limited and limiting. The case of the poster designed for the annual book fair New York Is Book Country in Manhattan, NY, by veteran graphic designer and illustrator Daniel Pelavin underscores these limits of the medium. The poster, which showed Afro-American and Asian figures with cartoonish features and skin tones of black and yellow, was rejected by a committee and was accused of promoting offensive stereotypes.

Melanie Marder Parks' art portrays bright spring colors, with a delicate balance between different design patterns involved in the total composition. Parks' designs contain more ornamental patterns and are of good texture because of the hand painted paper she uses instead of ready-made paper. Parks is a major in fine arts and calligraphy and has created much art for cookbooks.

There are a wide variety of different design firms in Seattle. Hansen Design Company, a studio that advocates function-oriented work, and Modern Dog, a studio that uses fake-fur-covered boxes to promote itself, seem very different, but actually have much in common. Both studios are enthusiastic about the personal and interactive aspects of their work. Hansen Design Company and Modern Dog collaborated on the cover of the May/Jun 1993 issue of 'Print.'

Designers in the US Midwest face many challenges brought on by the economic recession, including admitting a constant flow of projects, maintaining competitive prices while paying loans for hardware, coping with the redefinition of their job by computers, struggling with price-cutting and the frequency of 'spec' work. Other trends include small firms getting clients away from larger firms and neutral, strategically conceived communications emerging as the only way to deal with conservative clientele.
